Radio stations broadcasting Dr. Laura Schlessinger's show

August 15, 2010 2:21 pm ET by Media Matters staff

On the August 10 edition of her radio show, Laura Schlessinger took a call from an African-American woman who wanted advice on how to deal with the resentment she felt when her white husband didn't speak out about racist comments his friends made. Responding to the caller, Schlessinger, by her own description, "articulated the 'n' word all the way out -- more than one time." Among other things, Schlessinger also told the caller she had a "chip on your shoulder" and "too much sensitivity and not enough sense of humor."

Schlessinger has subsequently apologized for her comments.

According to Schlessinger's website, more than 200 affiliate stations broadcast her syndicated show.

A list of the stations listed on Schlessinger's website, audio and transcript of Schlessinger's comments, and the text of Schlessinger's apology are below the fold.

Here are the stations that carry Schlessinger's show, according to information available on Schlessinger's website:

Here's the audio of Schlessinger's comments:

Here's the transcript of her comments:

SCHLESSINGER: Jade, welcome to the program.

CALLER: Hi, Dr. Laura.

SCHLESSINGER: Hi.

CALLER: I'm having an issue with my husband where I'm starting to grow very resentful of him. I'm black, and he's white. We've been around some of his friends and family members who start making racist comments as if I'm not there or if I'm not black. And my husband ignores those comments, and it hurts my feelings. And he acts like --

SCHLESSINGER: Well, can you give me an example of a racist comment? 'Cause sometimes people are hypersensitive. So tell me what's -- give me two good examples of racist comments.

CALLER: OK. Last night -- good example -- we had a neighbor come over, and this neighbor -- when every time he comes over, it's always a black comment. It's, "Oh, well, how do you black people like doing this?" And, "Do black people really like doing that?" And for a long time, I would ignore it. But last night, I got to the point where it --

SCHLESSINGER: I don't think that's racist.

CALLER: Well, the stereotype --

SCHLESSINGER: I don't think that's racist. No, I think that --

CALLER: [unintelligible]

SCHLESSINGER: No, no, no. I think that's -- well, listen, without giving much thought, a lot of blacks voted for Obama simply 'cause he was half-black. Didn't matter what he was gonna do in office, it was a black thing. You gotta know that. That's not a surprise. Not everything that somebody says -- we had friends over the other day; we got about 35 people here -- the guys who were gonna start playing basketball. I was going to go out and play basketball. My bodyguard and my dear friend is a black man. And I said, "White men can't jump; I want you on my team." That was racist? That was funny.

CALLER: How about the N-word? So, the N-word's been thrown around --

SCHLESSINGER: Black guys use it all the time. Turn on HBO, listen to a black comic, and all you hear is nigger, nigger, nigger.

CALLER: That isn't --

SCHLESSINGER: I don't get it. If anybody without enough melanin says it, it's a horrible thing; but when black people say it, it's affectionate. It's very confusing. Don't hang up, I want to talk to you some more. Don't go away.

I'm Dr. Laura Schlessinger. I'll be right back.

After taking a commercial break, Schlessinger resumed her discussion with the caller:

SCHLESSINGER: I'm Dr. Laura Schlessinger, talking to Jade. What did you think about during the break, by the way?

CALLER: I was a little caught back by the N-word that you spewed out, I have to be honest with you. But my point is, race relations --

SCHLESSINGER: Oh, then I guess you don't watch HBO or listen to any black comedians.

CALLER: But that doesn't make it right. I mean, race is a [unintelligible] --

SCHLESSINGER: My dear, my dear --

CALLER: -- since Obama's been in office --

SCHLESSINGER: -- the point I'm trying to make --

CALLER: -- racism has come to another level that's unacceptable.

SCHLESSINGER: Yeah. We've got a black man as president, and we have more complaining about racism than ever. I mean, I think that's hilarious.

CALLER: But I think, honestly, because there's more white people afraid of a black man taking over the nation.

SCHLESSINGER: They're afraid.

CALLER: If you want to be honest about it [unintelligible]

SCHLESSINGER: Dear, they voted him in. Only 12 percent of the population's black. Whites voted him in.

CALLER: It was the younger generation that did it. It wasn't the older white people who did it.

SCHLESSINGER: Oh, OK.

CALLER: It was the younger generation --

SCHLESSINGER: All right. All right.

CALLER: -- that did it.

SCHLESSINGER: Chip on your shoulder. I can't do much about that.

CALLER: It's not like that.

SCHLESSINGER: Yeah. I think you have too much sensitivity --

CALLER: So it's OK to say "nigger"?

SCHLESSINGER: -- and not enough sense of humor.

CALLER: It's OK to say that word?

SCHLESSINGER: It depends how it's said.

CALLER: Is it OK to say that word? Is it ever OK to say that word?

SCHLESSINGER: It's -- it depends how it's said. Black guys talking to each other seem to think it's OK.

CALLER: But you're not black. They're not black. My husband is white.

SCHLESSINGER: Oh, I see. So, a word is restricted to race. Got it. Can't do much about that.

CALLER: I can't believe someone like you is on the radio spewing out the "nigger" word, and I hope everybody heard it.

SCHLESSINGER: I didn't spew out the "nigger" word.

CALLER: You said, "Nigger, nigger, nigger."

SCHLESSINGER: Right, I said that's what you hear.

CALLER: Everybody heard it.

SCHLESSINGER: Yes, they did.

CALLER: I hope everybody heard it.

SCHLESSINGER: They did, and I'll say it again --

CALLER: So what makes it OK for you to say the word?

SCHLESSINGER: -- nigger, nigger, nigger is what you hear on HB --

CALLER: So what makes it --

SCHLESSINGER: Why don't you let me finish a sentence?

CALLER: OK.

SCHLESSINGER: Don't take things out of context. Don't double N -- NAACP me. Tape the --

CALLER: I know what the NAACP --

SCHLESSINGER: Leave them in context.

CALLER: I know what the N-word means and I know it came from a white person. And I know the white person made it bad.

SCHLESSINGER: All right. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Can't have this argument. You know what? If you're that hypersensitive about color and don't have a sense of humor, don't marry out of your race. If you're going to marry out of your race, people are going to say, "OK, what do blacks think? What do whites think? What do Jews think? What do Catholics think?" Of course there isn't a one-think per se. But in general there's "think."

And what I just heard from Jade is a lot of what I hear from black-think -- and it's really distressting [sic] and disturbing. And to put it in its context, she said the N-word, and I said, on HBO, listening to black comics, you hear "nigger, nigger, nigger." I didn't call anybody a nigger. Nice try, Jade. Actually, sucky try.

Need a sense of humor, sense of humor -- and answer the question. When somebody says, "What do blacks think?" say, "This is what I think. This is what I read that if you take a poll the majority of blacks think this." Answer the question and discuss the issue. It's like we can't discuss anything without saying there's -isms?

We have to be able to discuss these things. We're people -- goodness gracious me. Ah -- hypersensitivity, OK, which is being bred by black activists. I really thought that once we had a black president, the attempt to demonize whites hating blacks would stop, but it seems to have grown, and I don't get it. Yes, I do. It's all about power. I do get it. It's all about power and that's sad because what should be in power is not power or righteousness to do good -- that should be the greatest power.

And here's the text of Schlessinger's apology:

These are my opening comments from my radio program today:

I talk every day about doing the right thing. And yesterday, I did the wrong thing.

I didn't intend to hurt people, but I did. And that makes it the wrong thing to have done.

I was attempting to make a philosophical point, and I articulated the "n" word all the way out - more than one time. And that was wrong. I'll say it again - that was wrong.

I ended up, I'm sure, with many of you losing the point I was trying to make, because you were shocked by the fact that I said the word. I, myself, realized I had made a horrible mistake, and was so upset I could not finish the show. I pulled myself off the air at the end of the hour. I had to finish the hour, because 20 minutes of dead air doesn't work. I am very sorry. And it just won't happen again.

I received some letters, and what touched me is that, even though many of you were upset, you still showed friendship for all the years we've been together on the air, and for that, trust me, I am very grateful. Here's an example:

I'd like to thank this woman for sending me this letter. I was so very touched, and truthfully, it helped me make it through the night. So I'm going to read this letter:

Dear Dr. Laura:

I have been a listener for at least 20 years. I have bought and read several of your books. I have always held you in high regard, and have encouraged others to listen to you as well. I have to say, after today's call with the African-American woman with the Caucasian husband who called seeking how to handle "racist" comments, I am a bit dismayed. I believe that African-Americans using the n-word is disdainful, as well as Caucasians or any other race for that matter. I agree that the argument some African-Americans use that it is ok for them to use it and not others, is ridiculous. But, I have to say, when I heard you saying the word repeatedly, it struck a negative chord with me.

I don't believe you are a racist, and I don't believe, as an African-American woman, that I am hypersensitive. I have to say after the call, I found it difficult to continue to listen to the rest of the show. I have not made the decision to stop listening to your show, but I felt compelled to respond because I found it offensive.

Sincerely {and she gives her name}

One last note -

The caller in question (her name is Jade), called for help from me, and didn't get it, because we got embroiled in the "n" word, and I'm really sorry about that, because I'm here for only one reason and that's to be helpful, so I hope Jade or somebody who knows her is listening, and hope she will call me back and I will try my best to be helpful, which is what she wanted from me in the first place and what she did not get.

I don't see any point to Jade or anyone else calling in for help when the person they would be asking help from has the philosophical position that it is perfectly appropriate for white people to expect one black woman to explain what all black people think.
After Jade explains what black people think about whatever trivial thing crosses some white persons mind she can go on to explain what all women want cuz yanno, she's a woman so she is responsible to know and answer up when asked by her "friends".

She apologized only for using the "n" word repeatedly.

        She hasn't apologized for this:

I thought is was because it wasn't a heart felt apology and there is a high chance of her spouting the same kind of nonsense again.

WXKT is a relatively new reassignment of call letters to 103.7FM, which had a music format serving the Athens, GA area before this recent change. It and every single other commercial station serving the Athens market is owned by Southern Broadcasting Company. This serves them right.

1st - Dr. Laura did not call anyone the n-word, nor did she use it in a hateful way or in a way to insult or belittle someone. she merely said the wors while describing how it is used in society these days. Was it insensitive to use the word? Yes. Would I have done it, as a white person? No. Does it mean she is a racist that deserves to have her career ruined? No.

2nd - She appologized for what she said and admitted that it was wrong.

So why the campaign to try ruin her career her for an on-air mistake?

The fact is, the organizers of this site don't give a hoot what Dr. Laura said or how many times she said it. They are just looking at this as that open door that they can get their foot into to try to ruin someone who has a different view on most issues than they do. It's shameful really. It is the lowest of low to make it your purpose to try to ruin people who think differently than you do. Hating those who are different is the very reason that most of you cite as a reason to hate conservatives......or tea-baggers as you call them.

Lowest of the low, is that it?

It worse than a bunch of idiots screaming "show us your birth certificate".

Or the fact that the majority of Republicans believe that the president was not born in the US.

Also we're hateful for for our criticism of Dr? Laura, yet it's OK for people to call the president a marxist, a Communist or a Muslim.

And we should ease up on the poor woman because it's worse than comparing the president to Adolph Hitler or Joseph Stalin.

Please post links to where Dr. Laura said any of those things. Or, are you lumping all conservatives (if that is what she is) into one big stereotype. Seems pretty simple-minded to me.

You made the claim that anyone criticizing this woman is the lowest of the low. My response was that people questioning the legitimacy of an elected president are lower. The majority of people aligned with the second largest of the two political parties in the nation, who don't believe the president was born here are lower.

It's also my contention that anyone who compares this president to the three biggest mass murderers in world history is lower than someone criticizing this woman. (Sorry, I left out Mao Zedong in my original post.)

The woman you're defending claims to be a therapist of some sort, yet blames the caller for the racism of the rest of the world. When a therapist makes a patients situation about the therapist's political beliefs, the person should no longer be counseling anyone.

One again, you fail to see hatred coming from the right and attempt to blame anonymous posters rather than a woman with a national audience and right wing political agenda.

So you disagree about what is considered the lowest of the low, but you agree with the rest of my post. ok, thanks.

Who are you to decide what makes it on the air or what people have the opportunity to listen to? People call her for advice, i.e. Dear Abby, and she gives it. People have the opportunity to listen if they want, or not. I, personally, have never listened to Dr. Laura's show. But, I do know that the portion of her recent show thay MMFA is obsessed with does not warrant some political-based campaign to remove her from the air (i.e. MMFA posting the stations airing the show in an effort to get their minions to protest or call and complain).

Questioning the motives of the person who brings racism to your attention is a pretty standard response by those who do not wish to examine the behavior.
So was Schlessingers response to the problem the caller wanted help with. She missed the point entirely.
                Srsly!
It is one of those NO ONE DOES THIS TO YOU things, so you do not even see it.
This is the shape of racism in America. People like Schlessinger who use willful ignorance as an argument to excuse willful ignorance.

Right, happens all the time. See, the biggest problem you people have is that you don't seem to understand that your behavior is what defines you. There's an old saying that goes, "People may doubt what you say, but they will always believe what you do." When what you say doesn't agree with what you do, what you do is what everybody sees.

People don't call right-wingers liars because they hate right-wingers. People call right-wingers liars because right-wingers lie.

As bintx pointed out above, Schlessinger did NOT apologize for this:
And what I just heard from Jade is a lot of what I hear from black-think -- and it's really distressting [sic] and disturbing.
        Or this:
(You) need a sense of humor, sense of humor -- and answer the question.
        Or this:
(You) can't discuss anything without saying there's -isms?
        Or this:
Hypersensitivity, OK, which is being bred by black activists.
        Or this:
I really thought that once we had a black president, the attempt to demonize whites hating blacks would stop
        Or this:
        It's all about power.

The only people who can "ruin her career" are Dr. Laura's employer and her sponsors. Even if they took action, there's no guarantee that it would, in fact, end her career. The security of her current position depends on whether her employer and her sponsors are willing to be associated with her anymore.

The problems with Dr. Laura's rant go far beyond the use of the n-word. New Frontier's reply to you is a very good roundup of the problems. The entire context of her rant is a testament to the pent up animosity she obviously holds toward blacks. And having the proverbial "black friend" does not alleviate any bigot of responsibility for what they say.

Dr. Laura blew a huge opportunity to ask the caller questions, become more familiar with her situation, and offer the help that she's allegedly known for. But instead, she chose to ridicule the caller and spout off about how blacks never seem to be satisfied and are constantly wanting more.

She apologized for her ridiculous use of the n-word REPEATEDLY. She did NOT apologize for her insensitive and condescending remarks made AFTER the woman hung up.

Dr. Laura has done this sort of thing before . . . she lost her television show because of her bigoted comments.

Me, personally, I don't know why anyone would call this woman who has NO qualifications in marriage and family counseling [Her education is in kinesiology [physical education] and physiology . . . not psychology]for her "expert" advice nor why anyone would listen to her.

I might add that, believe it or not, MOST people don't see their entire world couched in the false "conservative" v. "liberal" viewpoint. I don't like Dr. Laura because I think that she is full of herself and that she gives really STINKY advice to people who are in pain. I think she's a charlatan, just like Beck, Rush, Hannity, et buds. Beck, Rush, et al, aren't really conservatives, anyway. Just hatemongers for hire.

Dr. Laura holds a Ph.D. in physiology from Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons, and received her post-doctoral certification in Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling from the University of Southern California. She was in private practice for 12 years

No qualifications hu? You ever research anything before you post your garbage?

I really thought that once we had a black president, the attempt to demonize whites hating blacks would stop, but it seems to have grown, and I don't get it.

Who is this "we" she's talking about? The last time I checked, right-wingers didn't have a duly elected black President, they had a black usurper who was born in Kenya, is a secret Muslim, owns a time machine, worships Satan, eats babies for midnight snacks, and is a goose-stepping CommunNazi intent on destroying the country, and they'd just as soon see him assassinated as whipped and sold down the river. I don't think "we" means what she thinks it means.

        Where demonize=object to
Having a black POTUS would certainly explain it to a thinking person.
Again with the willful ignorance! Criminy!

She only apologized to appease the racist on the other side. It is funny George Bush had one of the smartest Secretary of State ever in Ms. Rice and lets not forget Collin Powell. Race as I watch TV and listen to the Radio has always been a problem from either side of the isle. It is used as a defence and offence by the community of ethnic descent and the so called crackers. The position was not who said what but how it was said:Remember the woman in the conversation was ready to leave her husband over racist banter from his friends so what does that make her vs the vows she took as a wife. We are a country that cant accept anything that is different from the so called norm. Asking for someones job over one incident is not what I fought for it was freedom for descent and liberties. I know this won't be posted since I carry the views from the so called middle but until you have decided to put yourself in the line of fire during a war be glad you can have a forum we fought to exist.
