UPDATED: Iowa paper reports Ted Nugent said, "There's a lot of white people in this crowd -- I like that!"

August 20, 2010 12:05 pm ET by Eric Hananoki

One of the scheduled speakers at Glenn Beck's 8-28 "reclaim the civil rights movement" rally recently reportedly told an audience that he "like[d]" them because there were "a lot of white people."*

The Telegraph Herald reported earlier this month that musician and conservative activist Ted Nugent appeared at a show in Dubuque, Iowa, and told the crowd, "There's a lot of white people in this crowd -- I like that! (Dubuque) is a white town." The Telegraph Herald added that "Nugent also pointed out at least one audience member and questioned his race." The Iowa-based newspaper also slammed Nugent's remarks in an editorial, and noted that Nugent has a history of incendiary remarks.

According to Glenn Beck, Nugent is scheduled to appear at his 8-28 rally, which falls on the anniversary of Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech. Beck has repeatedly talked about his rally in civil rights terms, and reclaiming the movement.

Nugent's "pro-white" remark was applauded by the website of the white nationalist, "pro-White" The Political Cesspool radio program. Nugent actually appeared on the "pro-white" show in November 2008.

The Southern Poverty Law Center notes that the show's guest roster is frequently populated with a "Who's Who" of radical racists such as "white supremacist" Sam Dickson; "white supremacist" Paul Fromm; former Klan leader David Duke; and "neo-Nazi activist April Gaede."

UPDATE 8/20: Dubuque365.com photographer Mark Dierker disputed the Telegraph Herald's Nugent quote, writing that "what I head [sic] him say in his opening monologue was this: 'Hey there sure are a lot of white people in this crowd. You need to do something about that.' He later said, heavy on the sarcasm, 'Dubuque is a white town.'"

*UPDATE 2: Mediaite's Tommy Christopher writes, "Nugent is no longer scheduled to appear at Glenn Beck's rally, but in this case, Media Matters can't claim credit. The Duge Nuge is booked at the Boise Knitting Factory on 8/28, a conflict that arose about a month ago (although, to be fair, this Facebook update appears to be the only news of the change)." The title of this post has been updated to reflect Nugent's cancellation.

Everytime I hear Beck express his desire to be like MLK, I wonder WHY. Does he think Dr. King was a billionare?

I have a pet theory that this is all about redefining what civil rights means. David Duke often goes on about European American civil rights. They want to make it about freeing white people from the big bad government that protects minorities.

Yeah, I think it's more than just a theory at this point. They're no longer being very clever about disguising what they mean when they say they want to reclaim MLK day. It's a White Nationalist message. They feel like the country has been turned over to the Negroes and the swarthier immigrants, so they need to reclaim the civil rights movement as a white movement. The white man is always the victim.

I was reading somewhere recently that by the forties and fifties, white conservatives had largely made peace with the New Deal and even regarded it as a success, but when an effort was made to extend its benefits to minorities, the opponents of the New Deal saw an opening. From there it's a direct line to the southern strategy, movement conservatism and, sadly, the right today.

Personally, I like it when people like "The Nuge" say stuff like this. It exposes the cockroaches for what they are. (Paging "Dr." Laura!)

And--of course--unless Nugent's comments become too widespread, Beck/Palin and others at the rally will conveniently look the other way when Mr. Cat Scratch Fever comes on with his happy "politically incorrect" braggadocio. Thus further exposing this movement and its cockroaches

Hey, it's all about civil rights and the First Amendment right? (Paging "Dr. Laura)

It kind of makes you wonder who Beck is "reclaiming" the movement for. Who's he taking the power from? If it was a movement to claim equality for minorities, is that who he's reclaiming the movement from? Or is it just the liberals and progressives who support the advancement of all people rather than just the advancement of caucasians. Beck is representative of the last efforts of a dying generation. The old guard. The last remaining dinosaurs who cling to their outdated beliefs and continue to call them "traditional values". These beliefs include but are not limited to the idea of women must stay at home while the man works, a child can only be raised properly by a mother and father, the poor are that way because of their own decisions and lack of desire, and the inferiority of minorities. The tactics, such as this rally, are the last efforts of this bunch. They have nothing left because they see the younger generations as being more tolerant of each other. They fear their way of life will be changed forever and their legacies will be that of shame. They're afraid of being remembered (at least in part) in a shameful manner because of the beliefs they hold. So in their final attempt to sway how history views them they are going to try and influence the younger generation by holding as many rallies as possible, to spread fear of others to them. The main message is "this person or group of people we're focusing on today isn't like you and you should obstruct them at every turn". A simple message of hate spawned by fear in order to preserve the egos of the few who refuse to accept any kind of change to their worldview.

He's reclaiming it from blacks. White Christians are the new oppressed minority, and black people are the real racists. The Nuge will fit right in line with the barely coded message that Beck/Palin/et. al. are promoting with this rally.

Ted's dislike of people of color might explain why he defecated in his pants and didn't bathe for two weeks so he's fail his physical for the draft.

I'm sure he would have gladly gone to Vietnam if they only let the white guys go.

Before I read this, I didn't think it was possible for me to think less of this cowardly pantload.

Nugent the big, bad, white hunter was recently fined $1700+ for hunting deer over a baited field in California! Couple that with his chickenhawk dodging of draft in the late 60's, it's no wonder he's a spokesman for the Regressive Republican Party!

I checked your story out. It's true and the mother was living with them. He had to adopt her to make the arrangement legal. Except the sources I found say she was 17, others asy he was 30-35. Still poses the question of association. I bet mama grizzily will keep her mouth shut about this on 8/28. Thats the family values crowd for you.

MM4A is quickly becoming famous (or infamous) for altering the "context" of a comment by only including a portion of it.

Per a concert review by Mark Dierker of Dubuque365.com -

He said “Hey there sure are a lot of white people in this crowd. You need to do something about that.”

He later said heavy on the sarcasm, “Dubuque is a white town.”

He showed how much he honored and respected black performers of the past such as Wilson Pickett, Ray Charles, Chuck Berry and James Brown among others. He said at one point that all American soul came from these black performers who gave their blood, sweat and tears to the music. He even launched into an American Soul retrospective with songs such as Soul Man and Hey Baby.

How the hell does somebody sarcastically mention that a very white town is very white ?

          From Maineiac's link:

Although the Telegraph Herald seemed to be reporting that Ted Nugent put on a racially biased show last night, what I head (sic)him say in his opening monologue was this: “Hey there sure are a lot of white people in this crowd. You need to do something about that.”

What MM copy, pasted and enhanced:

He said "Hey there sure are a lot of white people in this crowd. You need to do something about that."

Of course, the link is to an apologist fanboy's blog-

Overall Nugent gave a solid performance playing songs that spanned the breadth of his impressive career which began in 1962.
          (my bold)

But at least he mixed up the songs to set off the Jingometer and the repressed libidos-

After the Star Spangled Banner, Wango Tango was among the first songs he played ...

He may have been taken out of context, but not by MMFA; they got their quote and its interpretation from the Telegraph Herald. Mark Dierker was apparently also at the concert and could give a different account of what was said and why. I hope that Nugent *has* been misquoted and misinterpreted. Maybe he will speak out to clarify.

Unfortunately, racism is alive and well in America. If you Google ted nugent dubuque white crowd, all the links lead to White Supremacists lauding Nugent's alleged remarks.

The blog MM linked to is obviously a Nugent fan who was already aware of the news story. The blogger carefully worded it " What I heard him say..", which MM altered to "He said..".

Pretty funny that in yet another attempted gotcha by a wingnut trying to bust MMFA for editing, MM had to embellish a little, even when copping from a wingnut-friendly blog.

If he was taken out of context, fine. But perhaps you didn't bother to read the HEADLINE which clearly states: "Iowa paper reports Beck 8-28 speaker Ted Nugent said, "There's a lot of white people in this crowd -- I like that!""

How is that MMFA altering the "context?" They simply reported on an article from another newspaper. If you want to complain about the validity of the original article, you are complaining in the wrong place.

Not surprising. Beck has been building up his racist ideology starting out slowly and pushing the envelope here and there daring the corporate media to cry out against it.
When they showed what a spineless, total poodle to the rightwingers they are, he has been going further faster.
the whole 8-28 thing is too stomp on MLK and all african americans.
He has a racist roster to come celebrate with him for the purpose of slapping African Americans in the face because he knows no one will push back when CBC, NAACP, ect cry foul.
they can cry all they want and the left can call out all the race baiting by Fox and all the other ugly lies to no avail. The msm will stick their heads in the sand and pretend it's all so innocent and alright.
