Fox chyrons defy Camerota's "you decide" moment

Today, Fox & Friends continued their seemingly endless coverage of Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf and the Park51 Islamic cultural center, this time focusing on a clip of 2005 remarks Rauf made regarding UN sanctions in Iraq. But this time, for once, it seemed that a Fox employee actually wanted to live up to their "We Report. You Decide" motto. After co-host Steve Doocy went so far as to quote the notedly anti-Muslim crazy-person Pamela Geller to push the idea that defenders of Rauf are "sanctioning" Rauf's "anti-American, pro jihadist rhetoric," guest host Alisyn Camerota replied: "He's written a book. If you really want to know what he thinks in his own words, you can read them in his book in which he claims he's very pro-American, pro-democracy. Decide for yourself." Shocked? I was.

Of course, reading a book is a lot of work. In case you're looking for a shortcut, Fox & Friends is happy to oblige. During just about every segment Fox aired this morning about Rauf, the following on-screen graphics aired, declaring Rauf has "extreme views" that "spark outrage," and that in his "radical remarks," he "defended extremists":

Of course, this couldn't be further from the truth. As Media Matters has noted, in his 2005 remarks, Rauf was actually speaking out against acts of terrorism and suicide bombings, saying, in part that suicide bombing is "completely against Islamic law." And speaking out against terrorism and "Muslim militants" is something of a thing for Rauf.

Camerota's remarks are a brief moment of decency in a long-standing, all-out attack on Rauf. Of course, she's right. There is always more to the story than Pamela Geller and Fox & Friends would have you believe. Read his book, decide for yourself.
