Another undisclosed conflict of interest means Fox’s Dick Morris problem continues

August 27, 2010 4:20 pm ET by Terry Krepel

In June, Media Matters noted that Dick Morris was leading a fundraiser for Bill McCollum, who was in a Republican primary race for Florida governor (while falsely claiming that he rarely endorsed candidates).

Afterward, Morris appeared on Fox News twice -- on August 9 and August 23 -- to tout McCollum and attack his opponent, Rick Scott (who ultimately defeated McCollum in the August 24 primary). In neither appearance did Morris disclose that he had taken part in a fundraiser for McCollum.

As the invitation to the June 23 fundraiser shows – obtained by Media Matters from Morris’ mailing list -- Morris was no passive participant. He is listed as one of two hosts for it, and he also starred in a “VIP Reception” area where, for a $300 donation, donors had the opportunity for a “VIP Photo Op With Dick Morris.”

Hosting the reception with Morris was Christopher Ruddy, editor and CEO of Newsmax. In an August 26 column, Ruddy noted that he “join[ed] Bill McCollum on election night in Orlando” -- but not that he raised money for McCollum.

Ruddy didn’t stop there, though. Newsmax endorsed McCollum in a rare editorial, and its “news” coverage of the race was heavily slanted toward McCollum and against Scott.

This isn’t the first time Ruddy has let his favorite political candidates drive his website’s news coverage. In 2003, Newsmax published an article laudatory of then-Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL) two days after Ruddy donated $1,000 to Foley’s campaign.

Morris has a long history of this kind of blatant conflict of interest. He has repeatedly used his Fox News perch to promote candidates and organizations with which he is affiliated without disclosing that affiliation, and he uses whatever credibility his Fox appeaerances confer on him to shill for Newsmax’s financial schemes.

After all these years, Fox News continues to have a Dick Morris problem -- which it has shown little interest in doing anything about.

Was Morris wearing footwear during the Photo Op?

Fox "News" has bigger problems than Dick Morris -- the first being that they don't practice journalism.

I have to tell you all about the weird robo call I received yesterday from Citizen's United and Dick Morris. Morris railed on about Obama and socialism, abortion, health care, etc., you know the drill. Then I was given to some pollster who was going to ask me quesitons about President Obama. If I did this I would receive a free copy of Morris' new book. Of course, by the time I got done with the 3 minute diatribe by Morris about Obama taking away all my rights as a "good conservative," I wasn't in the mood to answer any questions from some idiot pollster. Anyhow, I told them I was a Democrat and I was very offended that they would call me . . . Weird. Anyone else ever get one of these?

I've never been called by a political pollster. I once got a call, apparently from India, doing a poll on current movies. I thought it sounded interesting, so I agreed to do it. It took about 20 minutes(seemed like an hour), and I was ready to shoot myself by the time it was over.

Filling out insurance paperwork is less tedious.

I feel like I should have stayed on the line to answer the questions, but then I would have received a copy of the dam#ed book and forever been on their mailing/calling list. I have a pretty thick spine, but every one has their limits.

You think for one minute that Fox News cares that this story comes to light? They LAUGH at this kind of thing. They know that they can do whatever they want and no other news network will touch it.

It's nice that Media Matters posts this story, but beyond the outrage of those of us that read Media Matters, this story will go absolutely nowhere.

The corporations like NewsCorp are acting with complete impunity now. They know they won in the Citizens United case and they know they're the ones pulling the strings now.

Sorry to sound so pessimistic, but I believe this country is done for. After the GOP victory in November, there will be redistricting (isn't it interesting that the GOP always seems to be in power during redistricting) we won't see another progressive congress for a generation.

Il Pupo, or should I say Mein Pabst?

I assert the Republicans will not take over the House in November.

Yes, people are ticked off about the economy, but the Reps are their own worst enemy. Reps and their fellow travelers are alienating independents with every nutty claim. They are not growing beyond their base.

The key will be whether the Dems can focus on a clear message and getting out the vote. The Dems can't run on a "we stink less" and motivate people. They also need to get out there and actively call out the lies while boldly pointing out what they've going to do.

If I wanted a picture of Morris sucking my toe, would I have to pay him or would he pay me?
