Right-wing media long for macho KGB daddy figure

August 30, 2010 4:23 pm ET by Matt Gertz

Right-wing media have a new problem with Barack Obama: the president just isn't badass enough for their tastes. Apparently, in their minds, Obama's level of testosterone compares unfavorably with that of Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin. How this interacts with the conservative media's claims that Obama is operating an army of "thugs" is anyone's guess, but it appears that they long for a leader who can put the "strong" back in "strongman."

The most recent iteration of the right's Putin swoon began on August 26, with an inane Big Hollywood post by Greg Gutfeld.  Gutfeld contrasted Obama's "We're buying shrimp guys... C'mon" response to reporters questioning him on Iraq while he was at a restaurant unfavorably with President Bush's infamous "Thank you. Now watch this drive" comment to reporters after talking terrorism on the golf course shortly before September 11. Gutfeld added, "Anyway, as Obama delicately sucks the meat out of a tiny crustacean, Vlad Putin harpoons a whale with a cross bow."

RedState.com's Erick Erickson followed up the next day with a post headlined "Their Guy vs. Our Guy," which consisted of photo collages of Putin and Obama that Erickson thought "worth sharing." The Putin collage showed a bare-chested Russian leader wielding a rifle and fishing pole and on horseback; it also included pictures of Putin pinning someone in a martial arts match and on a boat holding a harpoon gun. Obama was portrayed bicycling, golfing, eating ice cream, swimming, and on the set of The View. Apparently, the Obama collage originally showed him playing with his daughter; that photo has been replaced with the note that "Fatherhood is manly."

And now, Matt Drudge is running the following image on his website:

In unfortunate timing, today brings the following report:

In the Kommersant interview, Putin robustly defended police crackdowns on pro-democracy protesters in recent months. He said those who marched must obey current laws requiring them to seek advance permission from local authorities.

"If you get (permission), you go and march," Putin said. "If you don't - you have no right to. Go without permission, and you will be hit on the head with batons. That's all there is to it."

Yes, Putin is a former KGB officer with a history of brutally repressing dissent. But at least he doesn't wear a helmet when he rides a bicycle. That would make him look like a weenie.

So first the right-wing professional liars portray our president as despotic, then they turn around and portray him as a wussy and wish that we was more like another leader who, by his own admittance, really is despotic.

      Morons, each and every one.

Nah, Lance doesn't take HGH, probably more like micro doses of EPO that are somewhat undetectable, or blood transfusions from his own supply, which is also undetectable.

I like Lance. I hope beyond hope it isn't true. There are certain facts that have to be faced in these performance enhancing days though. When Lemond started turning on him it makes you wonder...

Does this mean that Matt Drudge & Erickson will get a spot on the Beck blackboard as 2 degrees of separation from worshipping Putin, Russia, hence -> Soviet Union, Communism and STALIN!!

The relevant bit is the gun. Putin + gun = power. Obama + girl's bike = wuss.

And it's not just any gun. It's super exotic looking, like a sniper rifle made out of unobtainium. And the orange coats, and what looks like inclement weather. Tough guy is out there doing something dangerous, very clearly.

Obama, meanwhile, has a family. What a lame-o. Never mind that he continues to claim the ability to kill US citizens without recourse.

The big problem for the Right is that Obama is faithful to his wife. He's making them look bad by not fulfilling their expectations of how black men are supposed to behave.

Let's just be honest. I didn't think so at first, but the more I see the more I realize that every bit of the Right's hatred for Obama has to do with the fact that he is not White. It makes them all feel weaker to know that the man in the White House is not just like them. Racism is much worse in this country today than it was ten or even twenty years ago. We're really becoming a second-rate nation thanks to the Right Wing in America.

You got that right. What drives these rubes crazy about Obama is not only the breaking of the stereotype that so many of them cling to, but that their underlying racism is then laid bare ever more so by their vehement, cockamamie rebukes of their critics.

So Barry gets over 51% of the white vote but we're MORE racist? Racism is worse NOW than twenty years ago!?

Left wing logic at it's best! - Tbone Slickens

While I don't agree with the broad generalization that all rightwing animosity towards Obama is rooted in racism, your logic is pretty impaired as well.

First, who is "we"? I'm assuming you didn't vote for him, just like the subset of whites who hold racist sentiments don't belong in the percentage who supported him. That's not a hard concept to grasp, so I'll assume you were being intentionally obtuse instead of genuinely stupid.

Second. Who said racism is worse now than twenty years ago? I DARE you to prove either of them were implying that. They were referring to a specific instance of racism occurring now, which I partially disagree with. Again, this isn't hard to grasp.

I've realized over the year that irony is not understood nor appreciated by the loony right. I think that their brains are not fully formed to comprehend that pictures and statements can have opposite meanings than their literal depiction.

I've read reports that Stalin is gaining in popularity once again in Russia. When economic times get tough, a lot of Russians, the older Russians especially, long for the old days of a strongman. Their lives may be lousy, but they got a strong leader. Classic.
