BREAKING: In the past 12 months Obama's approval rating has dropped 4 pts

September 02, 2010 10:03 am ET by Eric Boehlert

Hey, I'm just telling you what the daily tracking poll numbers at Gallup tells us:

-Aug. 30, 2009: 51 percent

-Sept. 1, 2010: 47 percent

I realize that Sean Hannity on Fox News last night announced that Obama had just suffered the worst August for any president ever. And I realize much of the Beltway press has echoed that sentiment, and in fact has spent much of this year pushing its beloved narrative about how Obama's polling numbers are  "falling" fast, and that his presidency is in rapid decline.

But is it true?

Just because the mainstream media and the GOP Noise Machine are (surprise!) in heated agreement about that point, and have been for months, does that make it true? I realize pointing out the fact that Obama has lost four points in his Gallup polling numbers over the last 52 weeks won't do much to discourage that narrative, and who knows, maybe he's about to take a big hit in the Gallup poll and week from now he'll be down nine points vs. one year ago.

But it's it's always useful to address the facts. And the facts according to Gallup's daily tracking poll are that in the last 12 months Obama's approval rating has declined four points. That, in a poll that has margin of error of 3 points.

I go to Gallup almost daily. President Obama's numbers have varied from 52% to a low of 41%, I would like to see his numbers higher, but they won't be given Faux yammering. It will be very interesting to see what happens in two months when the election results are in.

It will be interesting to see what happens if the Dems lose control of Congress and the Senate. My guess is that the president might very well come out on top of that battle, but only if he can get a good media team under him. I know a few people on this site that could give him a few pointers. :)

Agreed. Now that the Teabagging Troglodytes are in full control of the Republican Party, it's a given that they will go apesh*t if they take either House of Congress. They'll be drawing up Impeachment Articles before Christmas.

I think... at least I hope... the average American will be horrified by the spectacle.

You're very likely right about that impeachment stuff. There's this strange right-wing mindset that says that if a Democratic president does something they don't like, that makes it an impeachable offense, and worthy of tying down the congress' actions to it.

I was on Facebook the other day, and saw that my dim-bulb neocon brother-in-law had linked to some article about the "immigration scandal." A like-minded friend of his said that "Obama needs to be stopped." My brother-in-law responded, "He needs to be impeached." I decided to type in the fact about the huge number of deportations of undocumented immigrants in 2009, a 5% increase over Bush in 2008, and finished with "Yeah, he needs to be stopped. Or impeached. Or something."

I probably won't see Facebook until this evening--can't wait to see what kind of moronic responses have been garnered, other than demanding to see that I list my sources (while they probably got theirs from NewsMax or something).

Funny you mention those items about the illegal immigrants. I heard a story on NPR where they were talking about this very thing. Deportations, way up under Obama. Less people coming across the border (mostly due to bad economy and no jobs for them, but, they're still not coming across as much), and the population of illegals is done around 10% they said from 2 years ago.

So, yeah, Obama MUST BE STOPPED he's not doing anything to stem the tide of illegal immigrants into the country, even though, you know, his administration is.

I've always maintained that it's remarkable his ratings aren't lower, considering the incessant avalanche of lies heaped on his head by FOX/Hate Radio.

If Numbnuts Bush had faced such a relentless barrage, his ratings would have been in the single digits.

Got to agree with you here. Considering the bile and vomit spewed forth towards the President, I am also surprised his numbers aren't lower than what they are.

If we go back, and look at say the Dan Rather incident from the '04 election. He essentially lost his longtime job for one mistake, or one piece of misinformation, and the righties were super indignant about it. And here we have, essentially an entire channel devoting itself to constant misinformation about the President, and they don't see the problem with that. Weird.

I was a Dan Rather fan for years. I was really annoyed that they would dump him after 40 years with the network. I guess this is all an example of IOKIYAR

Thing is, about that one story, it was true. Bush did go AWOL, and was derelict in his duties. It was the documents that got him canned. Mostly due to the screech monkeys on the right, even after he went on air, apologized for the mistake, and allegedly moved on.

If Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilly, Beck, Coulter, Krauthammer, Kristol, and so on, were held to those same standards, none would have a job today.

Well, we have to understand that there is only one network that tells the Conservative story, so we have to let them do it their way. Facts don't matter, and standards don't matter unless you are a liberal and any attempts at neutrality are seen as liberal spin.

I still strongly suspect that Rather was set up. I find it odd that within a couple of hours, several Troglodyte bloggers had spotted some obscure font characteristic that was rare in typewriters of the time.

I think they knew it was coming and were ready for it.

And it's pretty clear that Bush and Rove were friends with people who could have cleared out the files that would have documented the problematic behavior.

It's not an accident that there's no proof that Bush served or didn't serve his full duty time. The documentation would have proved that he didn't, and that paperwork is gone missing.

Not to mention the economy, ill-conceived wars, the number of Americans who see him as too corporate/conservative, I'm actually surprised too that the numbers are that high.

And note to MMFA: Obama's numbers never "drop", they "PLUMMET". Always use "PLUMMET!!!!!", even if it's a two point drop to 49%, if you want to be taken seriously by the MSM..

Yahoo News, the new neocon corporate outlet, hammered at Obama by calling him 'Mr. Unpopular.' I don't recall our most unpopular president EVER, GWB, getting close to that disrespect. There are different rules when the board room says there are different rules.

I think everyone should remember that much of the rightwing lies and vile hate towaards Obama, the misleading stories and ignoring of facts could not be possible without the collusion of the corporate media.
What most average Americans these days, not very political ones, know about the president is largely the nasty lies spread by Limbaugh and Fox and they watch regular news.
The public is very uninformed of the facts and the reality of what obama has accomplished and what the congress under Pelosi has done.
They believe so much of the garbage because it is the mainstream that is taking anything by the right, including Politico, and spreading it to the masses, who assume that msm is telling the truth.
I don't blame the rightwing media half as much as I do the mainstream
