NewsBusters is upset Amanpour won’t falsely smear Rauf

September 10, 2010 2:48 pm ET by Terry Krepel

Brent Baker uses a September 8 NewsBusters post to attack ABC’s Christiane Amanpour for allegedly serving as a “public relations agent” to Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf by spending “several hours” with him for an interview. Baker claimed that during the interview, Rauf “warned, as he did on Wednesday's Larry King Live, that if he doesn't get his way Muslims will murder Americans.” Baker added: “Amanpour, however, didn't describe that as a protection racket or suggest he's employing blackmail.”

That might be a valid concern if that’s what Rauf is doing -- but it isn’t. Baker is merely parroting the right-wing line that Rauf is threatening America with terrorist attacks if he’s not able to build the Park51 Islamic center, and ignoring the fact that officials such as Gen. David Petraeus have said pretty much the same thing as Rauf regarding the national security implications of anti-Muslim protests.

In effect, what Baker is demanding is that Amanpour tell a lie by twisting Rauf’s words to conform to Baker’s political agenda.

Baker, by the way, is no low-level NewsBusters blogger --- he’s the vice president for research and publications at the Media Research Center, which runs NewsBusters. Baker’s post also appears on the main MRC website.

That a top MRC official wants the media to spread lies says all too much about the standard of “media research” at the MRC.

I don't know. It hasn't been proven that he possesses either.

Even though he was conniving and duplicitous, I think Dr. Zaius had a lot more on the ball than Bozell.

Plus he was more truthful. Remember his warning "you may not like what you find" to Charlton Heston's character in the first Planet of the Apes?

And in fairness, he was probably only trying to protect the apes from the right-wingers who destroyed the planet with nukes. Don't know if I'd have been comfortable with Heston leading a homo sapien revolution, either.

And what does this make Glenn Beck? I'm gonna say General Urko.

All the clowns from NewsBusters have creepy pictures. Baker and Bozell are two of many.

Baker added: "Amanpour, however, didn't describe that as a protection racket or suggest he's employing blackmail."

She also didn't describe it as ballroom dancing, diamond cutting or free-verse poetry. There's a good reason for not using any of those five descriptions.

Where was the right wings outrage when Bush/Cheney killed thousands of innocents with their 2 never ending wars. This whole thing about the mosque (which it isn't) at ground zero (which it isn't), is just another distraction from the real problem.

A never ending war against "terrorism"

I'm sure that these dips think that Amanpour is a) Arabic and b) Muslim. She's a Catholic with a Persian father and a British mother.

You're probably right that it's never occurred to many of those people that a Shi'ite family is very unlikely to name a daughter Christiane.
