CNN details media darling James O’Keefe’s latest bizarre stunt

September 29, 2010 10:25 am ET by Jamison Foser

Last year, Washington Post ombudsman Andrew Alexander took his paper to task for “tardiness” in reporting on James O’Keefe’s phony ACORN sting videos, suggesting that the Post doesn’t “pay sufficient attention to conservative media or viewpoints.” New York Times public editor Clark Hoyt wrote a similar column. Those columns were horribly misguided at the time, and only look more absurd as time goes by.

Here’s CNN, with yet another example of why nobody should ever take James O’Keefe seriously:

James O'Keefe, best known for hitting the community organizing group ACORN with an undercover video sting, hoped to get CNN Investigative Correspondent Abbie Boudreau onto a boat filled with sexually explicit props and then record the session, those documents show.

The plan apparently was thwarted after Boudreau was warned minutes before it was supposed to happen.

[O’Keefe associate Izzy] Santa told Boudreau that O'Keefe planned to "punk" her by getting on a boat where hidden cameras were set up. Boudreau said she would not get on the boat and asked Santa why O'Keefe wanted her there.

"Izzy told me that James was going to be dressed up and have strawberries and champagne on the boat, and he was going to hit on me the whole time," Boudreau said.

CNN later obtained a copy of a 13-page document titled "CNN Caper," which appears to describe O'Keefe's detailed plans for that day.

"The plans appeared so outlandish and so juvenile in tone, I questioned whether it was part of a second attempted punk," Boudreau said.

But in a phone conversation, Santa confirmed the document was authentic. Listed under "equipment needed," is "hidden cams on the boat," and a "tripod and overt recorder near the bed, an obvious sex tape machine."

Among the props listed were a "condom jar, dildos, posters and paintings of naked women, fuzzy handcuffs" and a blindfold.

Read the whole thing. And as you do so, remember: This is someone the Washington Post’s ombudsman thinks the paper should take seriously.

CNN's Boudreau has posted her own account of O'Keefe's scheme:

James says that he wasn't really going to follow through with the plan. He e-mailed CNN this statement:

"That is not my work product. When it was sent to me, I immediately found certain elements highly objectionable and inappropriate, and did not consider them for one minute following it."

But that does not appear to be true, according to a series of emails we obtained from Izzy Santa, who says the e-mails reveal James' true intentions.

...

I have worked so hard to have people pay attention to my work, and to be a respected journalist. I don't want to be judged based on anything other than my work. But apparently, I represent all of the things this group hates about the mainstream media. They feel because of the way I look that I do not matter, and that my reporting is a joke. They don't know anything about my work ethic – my history – my dedication and commitment – and my love for reporting. They just saw my blonde hair. And the ironic thing is that I'm really a brunette.

No...I know the words are Abbie Boudreau's.

I just find it hysterical when a "journalist" has to remind her audience that she's a real-life journalist and not just a pretty blonde. It's amateurish, IMO...and kind of dumb to even trust James O'Keefe in the first place. Journalism ain't what it used to be...and neither is CNN.

Sigh. You guys realize that the 'worked so hard' comment is Boudreau commenting on herself, and how some people don't take her seriously because of her looks? That wasn't O'Keefe or reading from O'Keefe's e-mail there, it was Boudreau lamenting how people like O'Keefe will never see her as anything other than legs, breasts, and an a$$ that they can make jokes about or attempt to sleep with.

Though, if O'Keefe actually did ever say that he wanted to be a respected journalist then I'd certainly have a reaction like your laughter.

Remember, it's important to read these things closely so as not to misconstrue the meanings and such. To anybody that ever asked "Why is English and grammar and knowledge of language structure important?" This is an object example of precisely why that is so.

Rule No.1: To thine own self be true.

The emphasis on superficial visuals in news media at all levels, from "if it bleeds it leads" to tizzying-up the on camera team to present a certain stereotype appearance, is as corrupting an influence on reporting as the political bias and bullying that emanates from the ideologues of the Right.

By the way, when "blonde jokes" first became fashionable, my very blonde niece would retort with "If you think us blondes are dumb what does that make all those brunettes who bleach their hair so that they can appear blonde?"

I had the same question. What does this stunted weirdo think he was going to "expose" by filming a reporter in close proximity to sex toys?

If I had to guess, I'd say it's more about O'Keefe's repressed fantasies than any real point he was trying to make. I'm not the only person who thought the Pimp & Ho scam was just as much about getting that Giles woman to dress sexy as it was about smearing ACORN.

Somebody above suggested O'Keefe get a life and a job. I think getting a real girlfriend might be even more important, or at least losing his virginity. He seems to be trying to deal with his own sexual frustration by tricking women into sexually-charged situations involving him under the guise of "sting" operations.

It's demeaning her with a personal attack, since he can't actually attack the media's work product.

It's exactly what we see from FoxNews and from our resident trolls - if you can't refute what someone is saying, you distract with some irrelevant personal attack that has nothing to do with the substance being discussed!

It's worked quite well for them at times! It sucks that they're willing to poison our national discourse like this to help their political causes.

This is just straight up weird. O'Keefe, constantly making himself less relevant all of the time. First, making a bogus claim against ACORN, which the cowards in Congress actually acted on, therefore destroying an organization that had been doing very good work in the poor communities around the US for decades.

Second, getting arrested trying to play gotcha game at a Senator's office.

Third, trying to emabarrass CNN's reporter by filling a boat with sex toys and such?

Try and prank a CNN reporter, and if she smells a rat use whatever footage you have to try and destroy her career.

O'Keefe claims that he wasn't actually going to go through with it - but then WHY meet on the boat?

If he was planning on NOT going through with the plan, why did he go through with part of the plan?

And THIS is why it's a good idea to not only point out the lies, distortions, and omissions of relevant info, but it's also necessary, as Obama did the other day, to call out those serial offenders so that they lose the credibility that they don't deserve!

Funny thing is, OKeefe may have committed a felony with some misdemeanors as flavoring.

Maryland is a two-party state for recording, which means both parties have to consent to the recording.

Plus, recording for malicious or prurient purposes is flat-out illegal regardless. AND there's a misdemeanor tucked in there about having hidden cameras in dressing rooms or bathrooms.

The recorded phone call alone qualifies, I think. The entire boat setup would have been a crime scene waiting to happen.

The link I attached earlier is to a different story than this (which is why it's a bit off topic), it just hasn't been covered anywhere (as far as I can tell) but on CNN and since this blog was referenced CNN, I thought I'd direct you to it. It's about an Assistant AG (Andrew Shirvill)who is going after some poor Student Body President at Michigan U (Christopher Armstrong)simply because he's gay. It's really quite horrible what this man is doing. The AG's boss is a Republican (Mike Cox) and would only state that while his Assitant AG's judgment is off what he does on his own time is his business. What are the chances that Fox will cover that story or this one about O'Keefe. Here is the link again.

Dear Media Matters: Please don't overlook the sexism and racism angle. All of his last three stories have targeted women. Two of the last three (ACORN and now this one) have used some sort of sex or sex stereotype against women. Two of the last three (ACORN and Shirley Sherrod) have tried to humiliate African-American women. This is an old story. Thank you.
