Lou Dobbs plays word games on undocumented labor story, would like you to feel sorry for him

October 07, 2010 5:28 pm ET by Oliver Willis

A report today from The Nation and The Investigative Fund said that Lou Dobbs "has relied for years on undocumented labor for the upkeep of his multimillion-dollar estates and the horses he keeps for his 22-year-old daughter, Hillary, a champion show jumper." The article goes on to explain that The Dobbs Group, which owns the horses in question, "has relied on third parties to supply the labor he needs." It is these third parties that the magazine alleges have hired undocumented workers that have done work for Dobbs.

In his response to the story, Dobbs has stated, "I have never, nor has The Dobbs Group at any time, hired an illegal immigrant."

That isn't what The Nation is claiming. Dobbs is denying a charge that hasn't been made, apparently in an attempt to deflect from the story. The Nation even noted in their story that "Dobbs has heaped scorn on the government for using contractors that hire undocumented immigrants," which is the charge being made.

ABC News describes the exchange Dobbs had on his radio show with Isabel Macdonald, the author of the story:

Their conversation quickly turned into a confrontation:

Dobbs: "Did you say that I hired or my firm hired illegal immigrants?"

Macdonald: "I am saying that for years, undocumented immigrants looked after your show jumping horses, and for years, they looked after the grounds at your West Palm Beach estate in Florida. This article is fact-checked 100 percent, it is legally vetted."

Dobbs hammered Macdonald with questions but seemed loathe to offer any explanations himself. He suggested that if the workers he hired were illegal immigrants, he didn't know that.

Macdonald also noted to Dobbs, "You have actually contradicted not one single claim that was made in that article."

On his Twitter account and on his radio show, Dobbs claimed that The Nation "attacks my daughter" in the piece, and invoked the recent birth of his granddaughter. He complained that news organizations like CNN and the NY Daily News had picked up the story from a "left wing activist, advocacy publication."

Dobbs chose to deflect the story rather than answer the actual charges. He's made a name for himself on attacking institutions that do what he is accused of having done. But he didn't directly refute the story, choosing instead to parse words and attempt to elicit sympathy.

Next, someone will have to break the news that his wife is Hispanic. I'd like to be a fly on the wall when that happens.

Right, moron, as if that proves any thing about the illegal labor he has used for decades. Thanks for being the first, and stupidest, poster!

....right over your head. I was referring to Dobbs' xenophobia. In other words, he'd be startled to find out that his wife is Hispanic.

Dobbs' wife and children are Hispanic. When that fact was mentioned a few years ago, Dobbs attacked the person who disclosed that fact as "attacking" his family. In other words, the old bigot thought that correctly identifying his wife and children as "Hispanic" was a smear.

Not all Hispanics support massive illegal activity, but nice stereotyping.

As for the article, Oliver Willis is (as could be expected) denying reality. He's correct about what the article says, but he's denying the reality that most have promulgated the story as claiming that Dobbs hired illegalaliens himself directly.

So, for instance, you have headlines like the one here (thinkprogress.org/2010/10/07/dobbs-immigrants-horse-farm). The author of that piece claims the headline is true (my conversation with him here: twitter.com/24AheadDotCom ). And, an NYT "reporter" also made a similar claim ( 24ahead.com/n/10242 ). A search will show hundreds or thousands of people on Twitter all claiming that Dobbs "hired" illegalaliens.

And, it's useful to take a look at what the Nation won't do. There's almost no chance that The Nation will look into things like banks trying to profit from illegal activity or the other aspects of this issue that are far more important. Instead, they concentrate on someone who's not on TV anyone and who somewhat supports the same amnesty as them. And, they spent a year doing it.

They're corrupt and stupid. Don't give The Nation any of your money until they go after bigger, much more important fish.

          Dobbs didn't "hire" illegalaliens.

He just "paid" them thousands of "dollars" of his own "money" to "do" "stuff" for him on his gigantic "estate". He didn't "know" they were ill eagles, there was at least one (1) intermediary staff member, therefore he is innocent.

And also, other stuff. Too. In boldface type.

Dobbs hired the contractor who hired the undocumented workers. He is still responsible for hiring them. Dobbs knew these folks were undocumented.

First of all, the fact that his wife is Hispanic is 'old news'... The fact that Dobbs is evasive about the questions posed to him on this matter-given his never-ending vitriol against Immigrants...THAT is the Real issue.
Can YOU or ANYONE,for that matter, Imagine what the Atmosphere must be like in THAT Home...He-a Immigrant 'HATER' Xenophobe, a Latina Wife-two children of Mixed-Ancestry...I wonder what those dinner-time conversations center around...What must the In-Laws Make of this Latino-Bashing Hypocrite!!!

I live in the Southwest. Lots of people here (elsewhere I'm sure, but especially out here) hire people to do the kinds of jobs most Americans won't do. Yardwork, landscaping, maids, and so on.

Just like Meg Whitman and her husband, people here almost always choose to look the other way when considering the issue of whether undocumented migrants are doing their work. These people cost significantly less to hire and are more 'disposable' should they get hurt.

And if it's through a third party, like a landscaping company, there's an extra layer of plausible deniability.

It's the dirty little secret of the anti-immigrant crowd. They love to complain about them, but they also love the cheap labor and many of them contribute to the very problem about which they get so upset by giving them employment... again, either directly or indirectly.

I don't like that phrase "that Americans "won't" do". That is not a factual statement. I know many "Americans" that will do those jobs, just not for $3.00 an hour for an organization that pushes them to do hours and hours of really hard, back breaking labor that then pays the boss a lot of (sometimes undeserved) money! Americans want a fair shake, illegals can be taken advantage of. (Both illegally and immorally)

Let's say you're building a house and hire a general contractor.

They in turn subcontract, schedule, and supervise lots of services like roofers, framers, drywallers, electricians plumbers, masons, landscapers, and on and on. Some of these firms may have undocumented workers.

You are the ultimate "employer" since you are writing the check, but did you hire or "use" undocumented workers?

It's a stretch. There's a simple way to settle these things: legalize the workers.

No, I don't think "legally yes" is correct.

If that were so, is Whole Foods responsible for the farm that grew the lettuce they bought? After all, Whole Foods signed the check. Legally, they are not. They are a customer of the farm just as you are a customer of the contractor building your house.

You're trying to say there's no degree of separation between the undocumented worker and the end user, and you are wrong.

If you bought that lettuce at Whole Foods, are you now the employer?

          Get real.

In an article entitled Lou Dobbs denies hiring illegal immigrants (as if that's the point), the CNN Wire Staff refers to The Nation as a:

ABC crops video to make Dobbs the one who is right and McDonald the one who is trying to frame him. ABC (through editing and editorializing) redirects the question to exactly the one Dobbs is trying to reframe.
