Beck's violent rhetoric keeps having real world consequences

October 22, 2010 6:02 pm ET by Oliver Willis

On today's radio show Glenn Beck said he couldn't believe that Stephen Broden, a frequent guest on his Fox News show and a pastor who attended his 8-28 rally, said that violent overthrow of the U.S. government is an option that "is on the table."

In fact, as the video shows, the reports of these comments are accurate:

Broden has appeared on Beck's show at least 6 times in the last year (via Nexis). In July, Broden was part of Beck's panel of "preachers and pastors" who were there to provide "a look at today's news." Broden also appeared with Alveda King to discuss their version of the history of the civil rights movement. Beck cited Broden's association with Alveda King as one reason he didn't believe the charges of violent rhetoric. Notably, Alveda King has compared same-sex marriage to genocide.

It's notable that in the report on Broden's rhetoric, much of his most outlandish comments are major premises of Beck's radio and Fox News show. Broden discussed health care reform sending seniors to early graves, Beck has promoted the "death panel" myth. Broden claimed that the Obama administration planned the economic problems facing the country, while Beck has said that Obama administration is engaged in a plot to "collapse the system." Broden compared the current administration to Nazis, while hardly a day goes by when Glenn Beck doesn't invoke the Nazis in his discussions of the Obama administration.

Beck has said that progressives support "armed insurrection," and that President Obama is "poking and prodding" the Tea Party to violence, while simultaneously urging his followers to use peaceful means. But Beck's fans keep taking his violent rhetoric to its logical conclusion; his words have been echoed in the comments of Broden, as well as the actions of cop killer Richard Poplawski who reportedly was a Beck fan, and of course attempted assassin Byron Williams who was a devotee of Beck's numerous conspiracy theories.

Perhaps this is why Glenn is so adamant about the Juan Williams situation. If Juan Williams can be held to account for what he says, could it also happen to Glenn? Since Glenn has said far more violent, inflammatory, and divisive things, perhaps he is concerned with the possibility of being held accountable for his speech.

      Perhaps he should be.

        Good catch!
He's already been on the fence for losing advertisers and even some at Fox are getting tired of this fool.
he might be on the ropes as we speak.

Why is it, that if Eddie Beck is promoting violence as he must be (at least according to most of the threads here), we do not have rioting in the streets daily (ala France)?

well, they are more culturally developed and sensible, through hard experience. we've been lucky at having coasted along, while stealing a large part of the world's resources for ourselves, and while intentionally increasing the levels of death, illiteracy, ignorance and hypocrisy here. the defense budget alone is a a sign of our psychotic behavior.

You mean like cop killer Richard Poplawski, who believed Beck when he said Obama was going to take away his guns? Or the guy who was going to assassinate Byron Williams of the Tides Foundation? Violence like that you mean? With the small audience he already has, he has spawned plenty of violence. Of course, I also say that Bill O'Reilly is partly to blame for Dr. Tiller's assassination as well.

I think the French are generally in a lot better shape than Beck's fans. Rioting in the streets requires some physical activity.

Oh yeah, and they're obviously not scared to go outside.

Beck's audience isn't an active mob, they're more like a bunch of paranoid shut-ins with the occasional psycho gun nut who actually does something.

Lest we forget, the people in France are demonstrating/rioting/protesting over something that is in fact being taken away from them. No matter what side you're on in that debate, you have to admit there is a tangible source for the anger in the form of ACTUAL GOVERNMENT LEGISLATION. What exactly would Beck's fans take to the streets over? Losing their freedoms? What freedoms exactly? Death panels? Shut up! Losing your guns? Ummmm, try again. Losing your religion? Then don't listen to R.E.M. The socialist/communist/fascist/marxist/anti-colonialist/leninist/atheist (did I get enough "ists" in there?) takeover of the country? Way too many straws being grasped at there. People who love Beck are no doubt angry, but it's not rooted in anything even remotely concrete enough for them to get off the couch ignite a little havoc "a la France" as you say. Try again.

The people in France are rioting in the streets because of the austerity measures the Government is trying to implement. They realize the worst thing you can do is stop spending to get out of the recession. Also, the cuts are always on the old and poor.
This country has it all backwards. The Tea Party should be against the megscorporations that we have had to bail out as well as the oil industry that fights for deregulation, doesn't implemet safety standards to cut corners and then destroys our environment. Instead these lunatics are fighting the government, which is the ONLY entity big enough to stop this corporate malfeasance. They are actually attacking the one thing that could effect real change.
We want to be a capitolist society, but we have to realize without regualtions in the banking, energy, medical and defense industries they will continue to rape and pillage our society.
We should learn a lesson from the French and demand that the middle class has a fair chance to work and succeed. Otherwise we are the United Corporations of America and our Govt is of, by and for the big industries and not for the people. This is the result of massive propaganda beginning on talk radio. 95 percent of our airwaves are hosted by corporate prostitutes like Rush, Beck, Hannity, Savage etc. They are very talented con men. Using patriotic, populist rhetoric and baseless conspiracy theories they have succeeded in manipulating millions of Americans to focus their rage at the Government and Obama and protecting the big industries that pay these jokers vast amounts of money to spew their lies.

Just wait. With all the idiotic garbage that's spewed on Fox and the cleverly re-named link titles on their opinion blog to incite their uninformed lied to faithful fans , it won't be long until Fox will be responsible for inciting civil violence.

The right-wing wants to radicalize itself, thereby radicalizing everyone else in the process. Beck, for instance, says that 'god, gold, and guns' are the only real solutions, but then he can, in the next breath, say that he disapproves of the violent rhetoric of others.

This is the kind of thing David Neiwert is talking about when he says that right-wing radicalism is being mainstreamed.

Pillsbury Dumb-boy Beck is creating all this and then trying to deny it. Eventually his sponsers are going to catch on and distance themselves from his pseudo-messianic, deluded mission and he will be left with nothing but his own self-admiration as the masses move to someone else.

What is it about republicans that they absolutely lose their minds when they lose.

When democrats lose an election we get back to work trying to get back in power.

When republicans lose they go b@tSh!t crazy and do anything and everything to get back in power. They lie, the cheat, the tell half truths, they practice character assassination on an unprecedented level, attack candidates and their families, carry guns to events, and now there is actually PUBLIC talk about killing democrats.

Sharon Angle and her "second amendment remedies" This clown, and others.

The people that are perpetrating this violence are animals.
