"Naked" stupidity: Conservative media strain to blame Soros for full-body scans

November 16, 2010 11:20 am ET by Todd Gregory

We have reached the logical endpoint of the conservative media's all-out campaign to vilify George Soros: When something in the news makes people mad, run Google searches on the object of the public's anger, plus "George Soros."

Washington Examiner writer Mark Hemingway handled the googling duties for the story about the outcry over full-body scanners at airports. In a blog post headlined "George Soros also profiting off controversial TSA scanners," Hemingway purported to show that Soros owns stock in OSI Systems, the parent company of Rapiscan, which makes the scanners.

Glenn Beck couldn't resist this. Today on his radio show, Beck warned his listeners that "there's something wrong with the scanner story." He went on: "First of all, George Soros has 11,000 shares in the scanner company. What a surprise. But there's something deeply wrong with the scanner story and what's happening at our airports. You're being set up."

Fox Nation loved it, too, linking to Hemingway's post with the headline "Soros Profiting Off Naked Airport Screeners":

Hemingway's "bad thing + Soros" search revealed shocking information -- some website you've probably never heard of says that Soros owns stock in OSI Systems. Hemingway wrote:

As for the company's other political connections, it also appears that none other than George Soros, the billionaire funder of the country's liberal political infrastructure, owns 11,300 shares of OSI Systems Inc., the company that owns Rapiscan. Not surprisingly, OSI's stock has appreciated considerably over the course of the year. Soros certainly is a savvy investor.

The link there points to GuruFocus.com, an investment information site owned by a limited liability company of the same name in Plano, Texas. Here's the smoking gun:

Assuming that GuruFocus is correct, Soros owns 11,300 shares of OSI Systems.

And according to that same site, Soros' holdings amount to a whopping 0.06 percent of the company's outstanding shares.

Yes, six one-hundredths of one percent.

There is also a predictable reason that OSI's stock "appreciated considerably over of the course of the year," as Hemingway put it.

The stock got a fairly big bump during a short period between the very end of 2009 and very early 2010. You remember the thwarted Christmas Day underwear bombing plot -- it caused investors who pay attention to news reports to bet heavily on makers of scanners and other security-related technology, like OSI Systems.

Would it be better or worse if Soros had bought the stock before the bombing attempt? Did Hemingway check when Soros bought it? Did he do anything to verify the information that Soros owns stock in OSI Systems other than find a website that says so?

If so, he didn't mention it.

Meanwhile, the American Civil Liberties Union, which has been a vocal opponent of the use of full-body scanners, says that during a five-year fundraising campaign, it received "a $12 million contribution and an additional challenge grant from George Soros' Foundation, the Open Society Foundation."

If Soros is trying to allocate his money so as to profit from unpopular policy decisions, he's not doing a very good job of it.

It was welcome under the Bush Administration. Under the Obama administration, the exact same measures are suddenly tyranny. Curious.

I wonder what the difference is....

For the record, I've always been opposed to Draconian security measures under any administration.

Somehow Beck has to say that Soros was putting naked Jews through scanners when he was 14.

It all makes perfect sense to me.

Full-body scanners are in use because of terrorists.
      All terrorists are Muslim.
      All Muslims are extermists.
      All Democrats support Muslims.
      Therefore, all Democrats are extremists.
      George Soros ("drink!") supports Democrats.
Therefore, Soros is an terrorist responsible for full-body scanners.

See? Anything is logical when you use The Teabagger Way(tm).

I love how these fake conservatives protest and fear a man they most likely know nothing about.

Other than staunch righties, I don't know of a single soul who knows or who cares who this Soros fella is.

Personally, I'd like to see Soros run with Obama in 2012 and REALLY make the right cringe in fear.

With all of this attention paid to scapegoating Soros, who's watching Ross Perot? How do we know Perot isn't bankrolling some subversion somewhere?

Just looked at the gurufocus site. A search for 'Soros' and a browse of their list of his holdings shows that Soros sold out all OSIS shares on 9/30/2010.

How will the crazies twist it now?

And at todays price it was worth $400,000.
Compared to the $12 million he gave to the ACLU it doesn't seem like much.

Flying somewhere on a plane, just like being on a radio/tv show, is NOT a right guaranteed to Americans.

You don't want to be scanned? Don't go on trips on a plane.

"You don't want to be scanned? Don't go on trips on a plane."

Well that would fit in with Obama's continued destruction of the economy.

How about, "don't want to destroy the economy by wasting billions on scanners run by morons in the TSA? PROFILE like Israel's national airline El AL does; they have one of the best airline security records in the world because they aren't concerned with offending people, they want to SAVE LIVES.

And while you're bleating about Beck and Fox and everyone else's legitimate beefs with Soros, why not disclose in every MM Soros article (like PROFESSIONAL JOURNALISTS DO everywhere else) that Soros just gave MM a million bucks?

What's the matter, waiting for your talking points from the WH?

The head of security for El Al was on a new channel (CNN I think) a few years ago and was talking about why racial profiling never works, so there goes your El Al theory. He noted that the first attack on an Israeli airport was by the Japanese Red Army so racial profiling would not have done anything.

I guess someone on Fox must have mentioned this El Al thing because thats all I've been hearing for two days now.

No, we want to fly with you Tiny so we have something to laugh at. Seriously, read the history of George and how he turned in his jewish neighbors to the Nazi's and then helped confiscate their stuff. You Obozoites need to read more history and less bathroom stall literature. While you're at it read about your other hero creep Che Gueverra.

Look, anyone who takes even 10 minutes to inform themselves objectively on any issue understands that Soros is not some evil boogeyman. The problem is that the people who get their news from FoxNation, Beck, O"Reilly, Hannity, etc don't practice objective research. I guess they think that people like Beck have already done some objective research. The reality is that Fox viewers, Beck fans, and other right wing fanatics are morons. Plain and simple. I've seen it first hand and many of you probably have as well. Just participate in the comments section of your local newspapers website. You'll see firsthand how ignorant some of these people really are.

For example, one guy yesterday, actually tried to make the argument that the Republicans didn't actually control Congress for most of the past 15 years and therefore all the economic hardships that we have encountered recently are a direct result of 4 years of Democratic House rule! He actually believed that the gap between the rich and the poor was decreasing until 2006. He actually believed that wages did not begin to stagnate until 2006. The list goes on and one but surely you get the drift. You can't convince these idiots of anything, even if you provide them undeniable empirical evidence. Empirical evidence doesn't stand against the ranting of Glenn Beck in these people's minds. Now, that's either a failure of our education system or a cultural shift in which people have abandoned thinking for themselves and instead let television news shows do it for them. Sad, sad, sad indeed.

That's great. It's not L3 Communications that profits from full body scans by being the largest provider of them, nor the ex-Lehman Brother Managing Directors who are on their board and have been since their founding, because Lehman Brothers started the corporation, but George Soros because he owns some stocks in one of the smaller providers. Fox News is singularly a propaganda machine. Not even a very good one for the discerning eye, but that isn't most people unfortunately. Most missed the face that Lehman Brothers had a bigger mercenary force than Blackwater / Xe before they went bankrupt.
