Huckabee Inadvertently Proves His Media Matters Out-Of-Context Charge Is A Lie

In an appearance on The Steve Gill Show earlier today, Mike Huckabee was asked about the controversy over his remarks about President Obama's supposed upbringing in Kenya and Natalie Portman's pregnancy. Huckabee noted that Media Matters was responsible for starting those stories, and complained that the media “took the Media Matters news release and ran with it as if it was the truth and in context. And I just find that amazing.”

Huckabee's out of context charge is false. Media Matters provided full context of Huckabee's remarks about Obama purportedly growing up in Kenya (see here) and Natalie Portman (see here).

But in a radio interview last night, Huckabee himself provided evidence that Media Matters didn't take him out of context.

On yesterday's The Alan Colmes Show, Huckabee said (at 3:43) of his Portman remarks on The Michael Medved Show: “I encourage people if they really want to see the context of it, go to the website, to his or to Townhall.com, or MichaelMedved.com, listen to the whole thing, and they're going to see that I was responding as a segue into talking about that the average, the typical, unwed mother is not a Hollywood starlet who has vast resources and the ability to hire nannies and help. It's a person who's going to struggle all by herself, and really it's going to be very tough for her and very tough for those kids.”

OK, so let's trust Michael Medved's audio of the interview instead of our own. What did Medved post on his Townhall.com website? A clip that includes everything we included in our audio clip (to be technical, our clip is actually several seconds longer than Medved's clip). See and listen for yourself:

Media Matters' clip starts with: “MEDVED: Governor, I know you probably are out on book tour right now, you probably didn't have a chance to watch the Academy Awards last night?”

Medved's clip ends with: “MEDVED: It's tremendously staggering.”

MEDVED: Governor, I know you probably are out on book tour right now, you probably didn't have a chance to watch the Academy Awards last night?

HUCKABEE: I'm very happy to say that I missed it because usually it's about the most boring waste of several hours that I've ever experienced.

MEDVED: Well this was a - this was a low audience. However, there was - there was one moment where a very brilliant and admirable actress named Natalie Portman won Best Actress, and she won for a movie which I loathed called Black Swan. But in any event, she got up, she was very visibly pregnant, and it's really it's a problem because she's about seven months pregnant, it's her first pregnancy, and she and the baby's father aren't married, and before two billion people, Natalie Portman says, 'Oh I want to thank my love and he's given me the most wonderful gift.' He didn't give her the most wonderful gift, which would be a wedding ring! And it just seems to me that sending that kind of message is problematic.

HUCKABEE: You know Michael, one of the things that's troubling is that people see a Natalie Portman or some other Hollywood starlet who boasts of, 'Hey look, you know, we're having children, we're not married, but we're having these children, and they're doing just fine.' But there aren't really a lot of single moms out there who are making millions of dollars every year for being in a movie. And I think it gives a distorted image that yes, not everybody hires nannies, and caretakers, and nurses. Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can't get a job, and if it weren't for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care. And that's the story that we're not seeing, and it's unfortunate that we glorify and glamorize the idea of out of children wedlock.

You know, right now, 75 percent of black kids in this country are born out of wedlock. 61 percent of Hispanic kids -- across the board, 41 percent of all live births in America are out of wedlock births. And the cost of that is simply staggering.

MEDVED: It's tremendously staggering.

In discussing the controversy over his Portman remarks, Huckabee has claimed that he wasn't attacking her. But an examination of Huckabee's remarks shows that his defense is a lie. Huckabee said that “one of the things that's troubling is that people see a Natalie Portman or some other Hollywood starlet who boasts of, 'Hey look, you know, we're having children, we're not married, but we're having these children, and they're doing just fine.'” Huckabee later added that “it's unfortunate that we glorify and glamorize the idea of out of children wedlock.”

Of course, we probably shouldn't trust Huckabee to accurately represent what he wrote or said. After all, Huckabee claimed on national television that he wrote that Obama was raised in Indonesia on page 183 of his book when he didn't write that there (or elsewhere in the book, according to a Kindle search).
