Beck's Egypt Narrative Riddled With Contradictions And Imagined Connections

February 02, 2011 1:21 am ET by Sean Easter & Todd Gregory

Tuesday's episode of Glenn Beck built on Beck's theory that the protests in Egypt are being "orchestrated by the Marxist communists" and the Muslim Brotherhood. It veered into the territory of New World Order conspiracy theories and stopped along the way to take a nonsensical swipe at President Obama, but as usual, his story rested on a series of contradictions and poorly supported accusations.

For instance, Beck claimed that connections exist between the Muslim Brotherhood and over two dozen Muslim organizations in the United States, calling them "organizations and friends" of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Beck did not, however, draw any explicit connections between these groups and the Muslim Brotherhood or offer any reason to believe they support it.

Beck's list mimics one found on DiscoverTheNetworks, a dubious source Beck has plugged in the past. DiscoverTheNetwork's case for connecting these groups relied on a 1991 Muslim Brotherhood document. DiscoverTheNetworks says that the document "listed some 29 likeminded 'organizations of our friends' seeking to realize the same goal."

To suggest that these groups are allied with the Muslim Brotherhood, absent any evidence of their own opinion of the Muslim Brotherhood, solely because one 20-year-old document described them as "likeminded" is the weakest sort of evidence for such a charge.

Second, Beck made much of a pamphlet distributed by Egyptian protest organizers in a bizarre attempt to conflate Egyptian protesters with the American "radical left."

Of course, the translated pamphlet cites such goals as the end of the Mubarak regime, cessation of emergency law, freedom, justice, and the formation of a non-military Egyptian government.

Pamphlet excerpt

Since Beck is treating the pamphlet as genuine, it makes his statement that the protests are "not about freedom" or democracy, but rather about "an Islamic state," look foolish.

The completely local nature of the goals also undercuts Beck's theory that Islamicists and the "uber-left" are "plotting together" to achieve a "new world order."

Perhaps Beck's strangest assertion was that Wade Rathke, an ACORN co-founder, was somehow sowing the seeds of Egyptian unrest.

Beck's evidence seems to hinge entirely on a blog post in which Rathke seemingly voices support for the protesters and the fact that Rathke is part of an organization planning a conference in Egypt.

The truth is that when you try to weed through Tuesday's edition of Glenn Beck, you find yourself so bogged down in a collection of misrepresentations and fearmongering that it all just starts to lose meaning.

But it is very entertaining isn*t it ?

It certainly is, but his act has nothing to do with reality and that is why youngsters and the politically gullible should not watch Beck. He is a clown who in another format could easily be considered a parody of a conservative commentator.

If someone who didn't know who he was saw part of his show on Saturday Night Live, I am sure they would think it was a joke. It amazes me that so many conservatives let him speak for them.

Unfortunately for some strange reason many conservatives take his "I just pulled it out of my a$$" attempts at making sense of the world seriously.

Sure its entertaining... like professional wrestling or nascar pile ups.

It's much more dangerous than wrestling or NASCAR. The Beckbots believe his lies and act/vote on them.

Just ask the Democrats who've been threatened/attacked.

Please stay diligent here MMFA! Beck is really bringing the crazy in the wake of Egyptian unrest. The hyperbole and exaggerations are at the highest levels I've ever seen. He has absolutely ZERO clue what he is talking about, and is just carelessly throwing around a cadre of emotionally-laden "buzz" words!!

The notion that American left-wingers want Islamic fundamentalism is beyond laughable. The notion that Obama is supporting Islamic fundamentalists and conspiring to bring about a New World Order is even more laughable! But his followers will believe this garbage! Beck puts forth a simplistic "American Progressive = evil" narrative and thus "evil" Muslims MUST be connected to American progressives. They just MUST be connected.

They are of course NOT connected in any way, shape or form. Islamic fundamentalists resemble right-wing theocrats like Westboro Baptist if anything. Don't let Beck get away with this hyperbole. Not this time. It is just toooooo crazy even for Beck and his authoritarian followers!

I know pointing out Beck's "contradictions and imagined connections" is a full-time job but somebody has to do it! Godspeed MMFA!

He is even trying to connect ACORN to Egyptian unrest for the love of God!!!! ACORN?!?! It's simply baffling on every level. Please stay diligent against this clown.

BTW, I keep waiting for the "Piven-Cloward connection"... she MUST have ordered the poor and working class in Egypt to have riots in order to "collapse the system" and bring about "mass chaos".... So the radical Marxists can take over of course!

Oh but this is the heart of the matter. Beck and his powerful sponsors ultimately want a perpetually agitated right wing base that really believes they are under attack from within the USA. They want all those virtuous Real Americans to be automatically hostile to any kind of progressive or liberal approach to problem solving.

Funny how people protesting real authentic grievances get the evil stamp from Beck. Legit are the tea party protesters, who are comprised of uncompromising conservatives who are angry because they don't get their way 100 percent of the time.

Angry corporate-sponsored tea party protesters! It has been my belief for quite some time now that many of the tea party protesters would not have shown up at town halls and other places if not for the likes of Armey, Russo, Marsh, Gingrich, Palin, the Kochs, and other high rollers. The original tea party groups were co-opted by the corporatists to serve their purposes. It always makes me wonder why someone from Podunk, USA would join with the rich who have what they need to make sure that they themselves never get it. My opposition is not about the rich being rich. It's about the selfishness, greed, and using people, then tossing them to the side.

Ah yes, "DiscoverTheNetwork." I remember that wacko group led by David Horowitz, the fellow who was once a lefty, but supported the Black Panthers long after they turned to violent radicalism. His guilt over having taken so long to recognize a group of criminals for who they were appears to have done serious and permanent damage to Horowitz' thinking about politics. As I remember, DiscoverTheNetwork alleged that people from all over the left side of the political spectrum were tied together in a huge, vast conspiracy.

Unfortunate that there are people want to slant the truth toward their cause. And naturally it can go either way when people are passionate about their cause.
I was wondering, your article suggests that Beck needs to check credible sources and prove his conclusions.
I was looking for the sources that were used to refute his statements in this article but couldn't find any. Is this site mostly commentary?

Normally, MMFA does just that, provides sources that quickly pop holes in the propaganda that they're documenting. In this case, Beck's imagined conspiracies are so loony and out there, it's hard to find a short, concise source that takes down what he says.

Looking over David Horowitz's wikipedia (founder of DiscoverTheNetwork), it appears his rantings have inspired nutjobs to send violent/threatening emails to professors he deemed as "dangerous". I am not surprised one bit that Beck took a shine to that idiot.

I am also not surprised that, of his many initiatives, they sponsored trips for Republican politicians and thinks liberals are Islamic extremist supporters or sympathizers.

This article is about religious solidarity in Egypt between Muslims and Christians. I also saw a pic on Al Jazeera's site on yesterday of a young Muslim male wearing a t-shirt that said Muslims + Christians = one nation. Also, earlier today I saw a pic of Christians protecting Muslims while they prayed. Beck doesn't know jack s*!T.

I don't take Beck's word or MMFA's. I watch Al Jazeera's live stream of events and read the reports of foreign media sources who are actually in Egypt and not sitting up in a teevee studio spouting lies and spreading fear. MMFA is in line with what is being shown on AJ and written about in foreign news sources. Beck doesn't even have a college degree, especially one in foreign policy or international relations, and imo, has as much credibility about what is going on in Egypt as my kitty cat.

Your minds have been darkened and your eyes glazed. Such hatred is rooted in fear and confusion (from both sides). Have you ever asked yourself ‘why’ you chose the opinions you hold? Did you learn them from your parents? from friends at school? A few of you dug in and really tried to figure out the truth for yourself. Most people are just riding on the shirt-tails of other people, following their passions so you can belong and be accepted. It felt so good to belong that in order not to be rejected you have purposely blinded yourself to anything but their cause. Deep inside people need to belong to a social group. It can be a group of one or thousands, but your emotions struggle to find that comfort. And in urgency to fill that internal drive, you took the shortcut and passed over the meat of the matter. You have chosen the gravy. Gravy is just flavored water with a little thickener and very few nutrients, but it sure does taste good. (If you’re vegetarian, just go with it for the sake of analogy.) Don’t believe just any wind of dogma because it makes you feel good and makes life more fun. You must test it for yourself and make a rational decision. Is it more important to you to follow the crowd and think your belong, than live in truth? Do they truly have your back, or are you just another number in their ranks? Only you can save yourself from the Pied Piper.
fyi: The Pied Piper of Hamelin is the subject of a legend concerning the departure or death of a great many children from the town of Hamelin, Germany)

I want the left to know, I plant my flag in this soil. If I’m wrong, so be it,” he said before laying out his case. “And you can discredit me all you want for the end of time, but I’m telling you I’m not wrong on this one. And there are three points that I want to make sure are very clear.”

Sentence one: “Groups from the hardcore socialist left, and extreme Islam will work together because of the common enemy of Israel.”

Sentence two: “Groups from the hardcore socialist left and extreme Islam will work together because of the common enemy of capitalism.”

Sentence three: “Groups from the hardcore socialist left, and extreme Islam will work together to overturn relative stability, because in the status quo, they are both ostracized from power and the mainstream in most of the world.”
Just like the constitution is old and out-dated right? What a moron you are, just because someones speeches are old does not mean they no longer believe in what they said, the really do believe what they say and will do everything to make it happen.
