Fox News Discovers Nuclear Reactor In Japanese Disco

March 14, 2011 5:53 pm ET by Simon Maloy

Earlier today on Fox News' Your World With Neil Cavuto, this map popped up detailing the locations of Japan's nuclear power plants:

One name seems out of place on the graphic -- that of "Shibuyaeggman."

It doesn't show up on the International Atomic Energy Agency's list of Japanese nuclear power stations, and this map of Japanese nuclear installations from the Department of Energy's International Nuclear Safety Center doesn't have any listing for "Shibuyaeggman," and doesn't show a nuclear power plant anywhere near the location on the Fox News map. So I did a little research.

A quick Googling of "shibuyaeggman" turned up no meaningful results. A Nexis search was also fruitless. However, further inquiries revealed that Eggman is the name of a dance club in a trendy neighborhood of Tokyo called... Shibuya. And, it just so happens, the Fox graphic appears to place the alleged reactor in Tokyo. Here's a photo of Eggman -- as you can see, it's right below The @ Super Suits Store. And Johnny Hi-Fi played there in 2006.

Sounds like a fun place. But it doesn't sound like a nuclear power plant.

Not surprising - he got heckled at a Friars Club roast after 9/11 for doing terrorist jokes. It's in the film "The Arstiocrats".

While the city of Sendai (仙台市) is indeed located in northeastern Japan, there is actually a Sendai Nuclear Power Plant located where this map says it is. Anyway, great post.

That Sendai nuclear plant is in Kagoshima, Southern Kyushu so Fox is correct about that. Both it and a big city in Tohoku near epicenter are called Sendai, same in romanized Japanese. but have different Chinese characters.

I am living near Shibuya, and feels funny the Eggman on map, as it is often said by anti-nuclear power activists often claim to build it in central Tokyo if it is really safe.

You've pointed out the real issue, nerzog. This wasn't just an accident; it was a deliberate prank put into a news story about one of the worse disasters in years.

I don't care what your ideology is. Fox News should take responsibility for this, publicly apologize and take action to be sure it doesn't happen again.

Unfortunately, I would not bet five cents that anything like that would happen.

They also have Sendai on the extreme southern tip of Japan when in real life it is in Miyago prefecture in the distant north.

Fox is not wrong about Sendai. There is a Sendai on the island of Kyushu like they show on the map. There are no reactors in the other Sendai in northern Japan. Also, it's Miyagi, not Miyago. Take a look at yourself before making such bold accusations.

Keep in mind that a) the INES scale is logarithmic, so a 7 is 10 times worse than a 6 and b) the INES scale isn't exclusively about harm to the public; it also takes into account things like costs to the facility's operators and the amount of cleanup effort required. Not to say the situation isn't awful, but it's still nowhere near the magnitude of Chernobyl.

The Shibuyaeggman part is an obvious typo, or at worst a joke of which anyone should be ashamed. What bothers me is the attitude about the placement of Sendai. Everything here seems to think they're experts on the topic. There is a nuclear plant in the city of Sendai on the island of Kyushu, exactly where noted. I should know - I used to pass through the area everyday. Having been connected with Japan for the last 15 years or so and having a real heart for the people there this is extremely hard to watch. It's hard to believe people are so shallow. Who's willing to give a few of their Saturdays to helping the people of Japan? Sadly, not many... It feels much better to point at others and how stupid they are than to actually do something to help, and ironically they end up being the stupid ones. When are people going to wake up? This is so very, very petty. People, you're wasting your lives away...

It is missing Genkai, Shinamane, Ohi, Mihama, Kashiwazaki Kariwa, tsurga, and Higashidoori. It also has Fukushima listed as one plant when in reality it is two different plants.

I'm confused as to why there are still so many people arguing about Sendai. Yes we know where the "City" Sendai is but before posting your comment how about reading other comments first. There is a plant called Sendai that many people have already stated. It is located correctly on the map. FoxNews should have, if they have one, used their brain making the map and put the name of the city in place of the name of the plant as to not cause this confusion. But it's FoxNews so I'm expecting far too much from them when it comes to journalism and geography.
