UPDATED: Beck Radio Falling Short Of "400th Affiliate Milestone"

March 31, 2011 12:24 pm ET by Angelo Carusone

On June 14, 2010, Premiere Radio Networks announced that Glenn Beck's radio program "hit a broadcasting milestone of 400 affiliates." Since then, Glenn Beck's website boasts that his show is "heard on over 400 stations:"

Well, it's time for Glenn Beck to update his website and marketing materials.

According to industry data obtained by Media Matters, Glenn Beck's radio program is now short of its heralded "over 400" affiliate status.  Asked to comment, Radio Business Reporter's Carl Marucci echoed this finding, stating, "our best gauge right now is also shy of 400." Premiere Radio Networks did not respond to requests for comment.

This should come as no surprise.  Since the beginning of 2011, seven radio stations have dropped Glenn Beck's show.

Buckley radio dropped Beck from five of its stations -  WOR in New York City and four in Connecticut. Philadelphia's WPHT and Madison's WTDY also replaced Beck.  Kansas City's KMBZ moved Glenn Beck from his coveted morning slot to a significantly less desirable late-evening slot.

Further, due to Jewish Funds for Justice's terrific work, five New York City radio stations have already committed to keeping Glenn Beck off the air there.

Forbes contributor Rick Ungar explains the financial significance of Beck losing radio affiliates - especially a NYC station:

While the radio show can survive the loss of the smaller markets in the Buckley group, no radio program can long survive the loss of New York as being shut-out of the nation's largest market makes selling national advertising exceptionally difficult if not completely impossible.

This is particularly true when you add in the loss of affiliates in major markets such as Philadelphia and the show's getting the boot out of the key morning drive slot in Kansas City.

Although much attention has been given to the dramatic decline of Glenn Beck's sponsor-dry Fox News show, this significant drop in radio support reminds us that Beck's decline isn't limited to just television.

The verdict: Glenn Beck is bad for business, whether it be television or radio.

UPDATE: Several outlets have called into question the veracity of the data included in this post. We compiled our information from two separate sources. First, on March 25, Radio Business Report - a radio industry publication - published a report indicating that Beck had fallen below 400 stations. Second, we purchased industry data from PrecisionTrak - considered to be the industry leader in compiling radio station information. An analysis of the PrecisionTrak data corroborated the RBR report. If either RBR or PrecisionTrak update their data, we will change this post accordingly. Additionally, if we receive comment or clarification on our report from Premiere Radio Networks - which we asked for prior to publishing this item - we will update our website.

Let's see. The entire premise of his post is a completely fabricated number. Beck's total affiliate count is 430. Angelo ignored the 88 stations Glenn gained vs. the 7 he lost... He would not be a good accountant

I get that stupid crap a lot. Beck is a phenom who needs to be exposed for his lies, his dangerous vitriol and his hypocrisy. (Who follows a hypocrite?)

Beck is a weapon of mass-deception.

The only facts in question have to do with the info that Premiere Radio Networks is keeping from Angelo. Apparently the number is over 400:
          See this piece.

Glenn Beck lies routinely, and Media Matters is hardly the only ones to note and document this. Beck lied about an ad running.

Beck dumbs his listeners down and threatens democratic order which depends upon an informed citizenry, not misinformed citizenry.

Media Matters has declared war on Fox; I have declared a struggle against Glenn Beck. Don't just sit there commenting, get involved and become Paul(ette) Revere!

You have to admit that Beck looks almost as good dressed as a Nazi as he did when he played an assassin in the days following the attempt on Giffords's life.

You have to be impressed with someone who can exhibit blatant hypocrisy over and over and over and still have millions of people adore him and somehow believe that he has "honor."

When Beck mentions MMFA, which isn't too often, except for laughing at these reports.

It's MMFA who's on the defensive, although they do try to play offense, unsuccessfully, might I add!

If Forbes magazine is openly predicting the demise of his radio show, it's a pretty strong message to potential future advertisers that spending money on Beck is a bad investment- and if the show can't attract ads, stations will be more inclined to replace him with something more profitable.
Beck's caught in a vicous circle of his own making.

Beck was #3 in all of radio before having NYC, LA, Chicago, etc. He does not need any of them. His success came from success on stations throughout middle America. Good luck trying to get THOSE stations to drop him.

No, he doesn't need NYC. He was a massive success without virtually any of the top ten markets. That is an indisputable fact. At no time was Glenn Beck's radio success ever dependent on a New York City affiliate. Never. What don't you understand about that?

Beck has NOT lost advertising on his radio program. TV? A couple. And even then, Angelo is just a tad generous with who he counts as a 'boycott' ... But then again, Angel HAS to create the storyline that Glenn Beck is in decline. His entire existence is dependent on making it look like he's causing people to abandon Glenn Beck. He should recuse himself from every article he writes because of conflict of interest.

All this article does is prove he is a LIAR. Or can't count. Or both.

Like ADT, Aegon, Airmiles.co.uk, Allergan, Allstate Insurance, Ally Bank/GMAC Financial Services, Alpro Soya, American Express, AmMed Direct, Ancestry.com, Anheuser-Busch, Apple, Applebee’s, Ashley Furniture, AT&T and AVON? Those are just the ones that start with the letter "A". If you think he's only lost "a couple" of advertisers for his television show, you're either ignorant of or not in contact with reality.

And clearly Beck's net is doing just fine. But what do you excpect from a guy who's devoted his life to stopping Beck? I feel bad for him. What a sorry existence. Just TURN THE CHANNEL.

Still, no one seems to be debating that Forbes article I referred to, are they? If Beck's losing the major markets, he's losing the major advertisers as well. Personally, I think he'll limp along in the shadows for quite a while... you know, where his die-hard fans already live.

No, MMFA does not have a better track record. They simply have a different viewpoint than Glenn. If you look at the overwhelming majority of their posts, it can be boiled down to differing philosophies rather than fabrications. But, whatever.
The Forbes guys point is completely disproved by the truth: Glenn Beck was the #3 radio program BEFORE HAVING TOP MARKETS. Sooooo he HAD MAJOR ADVERTISERS BEFORE HE HAD MAJOR MARKETS. Therefore, the loss of a major market is not a cataclysmic event. That may be true for a crappy show that has NY, LA and 300 1:00am to 2:00am clears. Not the case for Beck...

What do you mean by 'limping in the shadows'? That sounds like a conspiracy theory to me...

I mean he's a fringe figure who'll always attract a fringe audience; he spouts absurd, easily disprovable conspiracy fantasies (never call them theories; theories always have a basis, however shaky, in FACT) that are eaten up by listeners who are as paranoid as he is.
That said, I actually think his radio persona, with it's Morning Zoo style- Beck and his stooges laughing at people dying from radiation leaks and arsenic poisoning- is somehow more URBAN (urban does not mean "sophisticated") than his pseudo-evangelical TV persona.

Mediaite is claiming that MMFA got it wrong; that 88 stations have recently ADDED Beck's program to its roster. It's not unusual for syndicators to keep stations on its lists of affiliates long after they've cancelled a given show. Monica Crowley kept WABC-AM in New York and WTKK-FM in Boston on her list of affiliates when she had a show.

Beck is bad for America! It's really quite simple. United we stand, but Beck divides us like no one else. In a sense, he is a traitor. We've never been so divided, and Beck is mostly to blame.

Mediaite.com takes issue with the MMFA findings. It seems Beck has picked up 88 stations. Would "misreports" be the same as lying??

      Here is the report:

Media Matters Misreports Facts About Glenn Beck’s Radio Show

      by Jon Bershad | 3:20 pm, March 31st, 2011

Earlier today, Media Matters reported that Glenn Beck’s radio show had lost enough stations that he could no longer claim, as he does on his website, that the show is “heard on over 400 stations.” However, it appears they got some of their math wrong. This is terrible, terrible news, obviously. This means that, for the next three weeks, we’re going to have to listen to Beck go on and on about how Media Matters has “86 employees trying to get me and they still can’t get their facts right!” I’m OD’ing on smugness just thinking about it.

      From Media Matters:

“According to industry data obtained by Media Matters, Glenn Beck’s radio program is now short of its heralded ‘over 400′ affiliate status. Asked to comment, Radio Business Reporter’s Carl Marucci echoed this finding, stating, ‘our best gauge right now is also shy of 400.’ Premiere Radio Networks did not respond to requests for comment.

This should come as no surprise. Since the beginning of 2011, seven radio stations have dropped Glenn Beck’s show.”
      ________________________________________________________________

However, while they are right about Beck losing stations this year, Business Insider got in touch with Premiere Networks, the company that syndicates the show. Premiere says that Beck has actually gained an additional 88 stations this year in addition to the seven he lost.

While the original post may seem petty, if Media Matters had proven that Beck’s claim was inaccurate, forcing him to update his website (quietly though it certainly would have been), would have been a huge symbolic victory for the site (now I’m OD’ing on smugness imagining that). It looks like they won’t get this win though and Beck, who’s been on a roll of anti-Media Matters segments recently, will have a new wealth of material.

I can see why Premiere wouldn't want to provide Media Matters (of all organizations) with an official affiliate list. Do you honestly think they only want the list to count to 430? No. They'd use that list and start harassing all these affiliates to drop Beck. Premiere doesn't want that so they will never release the list to Media Matters.

In fact, MagCynic, I just stripped the source code from Beck's website, fed it to Excel, and -- presto! -- now I've got a nice spreadsheet with location, website, and air schedule data on every station that Beck claims as an affiliate. So no, that list isn't exactly top secret.

And guess what? That list of stations that Beck has published includes the stations that dropped him like WOR, WTDY, WDRC, etc.. That's right: Beck's website continues to count the stations that dropped him as affiliates. Perhaps that could be the reason why Beck and Premiere haven't handed a list directly to MMFA, yeah?

P.S. If you know of a way to publish such a document completely anonymously online, I'd be happy to do so.

Apparently so did Beck. His website lists 428 affiliates, yet that includes all the stations that actually dropped him. So unless Beck simply stopped listing affiliates once he hit 428, he's still inflating his affiliate count.

Curiouser indeed. It's almost as if the affiliate list that Beck's staff has compiled takes account of new stations added, but pays far less attention to lost stations and demotions from weekdays to weekends.

What other show gets the ratings that Becks does, His show seems to have the highest ratings for the 5 pm est o'clock time slot. I'm curious why he is attacked by Media Matters like this.

Before tackling that question, perhaps you should be clear about which of Beck's shows you're discussing: Beck's radio show is the subject of this post by MMFA, not his 5pm EST television show.

      Business Insider’s Glynnis MacNicol reports:

According to spokesperson at Premiere Networks, which syndicates The Glenn Beck Program, the show can be heard on more than 430 affiliates.

We took a look at the list of stations that do carry Beck it confirms this number.

Apparently, Media Matters forgot to add to their count the 88 stations that have acquired Beck in the past year.

I dug into this a bit and using Glenn Beck's site a source... I know, I know, I scrape all the radio stations he has linked on these pages

http://www.glennbeck.com/content/radio/XX where XX is the US state.

I got 438 stations with 10 duplicates or 428 unique stations

I did a little scraping as well, and -- apparently using different methodology since I got the list in a different order -- I can confirm 428 separate stations listed on Beck's site as affiliates. And the list that I produced, like yours, includes stations that have, in fact, dropped Beck's show.

Beck has commented on this, too. Why hasn't Media Matters corrected or retracted their report? It sounds like an attack campaign. Please stand up and correct your statement, please.

I am troubled by the fighting between conservative and progressive news and entertainment entities. Some of the comments on their sites are very hateful. The first amendment gives us freedom of speech, but when news reported is false, shouldn't there there be some accountability?

Everyone picks whatever source backs up the claim, including Media Matters. I have the same issue with MM, Glenn Beck, Fox, MSNBC, etc. etc. etc. None of you tell the whole truth, and all of you spin. I actually like some stuff on Media Matters, and on Glenn Beck, and many other sources.

Quit being sheep by blindly following any source including Media Matters and Glenn beck. Think for yourself.

P.S. just because Glenn has over 400 radio stations does not mean he is right most of the time or even part of the time, and it does not mean all the people that listen to him are hate mongers either.

Hmm - all media matters, but some media matters more than others.

How long does it take for you to publish the actual count of radio stations who air Glenn Beck?

Lying for the sake of a story is not good journalism - which means that your media doesn't matter.

I would trust Glenn Beck and all 430 of his affiliate before I would trust Media Matters. Good Lord...they have no sense of reality.

I find MMFA's entire anti-Fox crusade alarming. How is this good for America? Isn't free speech guaranteed by the constitution? Where is it good for any organization to have an entire arm dedicated to eradicating messages it disagrees with? Isn't this something the Republicans are supposed to be for? I suppose this is OK, just like strongarming small businesses in Wisconsin to either have signs showing union support in their windows or get blackballed and lose business. This is exactly the stuff talk shows like Beck's point to as what's wrong with liberals and progressives. You supposedly know more than anyone else so you should decide what people hear and they can't decide for themselves. I thought that stuff when away when the Soviet Union fell, although I guess it still lives on in China, which you appear to ignore.
