NY Times Reports That Fox Saw "The Refusal Of Hundreds Of Fox Advertisers" To Place Ads On Beck As An Issue

April 07, 2011 9:00 pm ET by Media Matters staff

From an April 6 New York Times article:

The negotiations that led Glenn Beck to announce his departure from the Fox News Channel on Wednesday ended with an expression of "let's part as friends," according to several people with knowledge of the talks. But behind that moment was a torrent of acrimony that underscored just how fractious the relationship between Mr. Beck and the network had become during his three-year run on Fox.

[...]

Beck supporters presented a picture of constant sniping, planted stories about his declining ratings, and discomfort with his ability to build a career for himself outside the Fox News brand.

From Fox's perspective, the facts about Mr. Beck's run on the network have been public and indisputable. Among those were the refusal of hundreds of Fox advertisers to allow their commercials to be placed on Mr. Beck's program, and a history of incendiary comments that attracted harsh backlash, including one where the host called President Obama a racist and another where he compared Reform Judaism to radical Islam. (He later apologized for both comments.)

Mr. Ailes suggested in the interview Wednesday that he was happy with the departure being characterized as either a cancellation or a decision by Mr. Beck to quit. Fox has retained all its other high-rated hosts in the past, but they didn't come under the intense scrutiny that Mr. Beck has faced, nor the mass opposition from advertisers.

[...]

At times, Mr. Beck and his managers said they sensed that Fox was retaliating in public, although they did not prove it.

How much would you PAY to see the "E! True Hollywood Story" about the unraveling of Glenn Beck at Fox?

Interviews with other Fox Hosts about how much they HATED him taking over FOX

Interviews with the crew members about how much they HATED working FOR HIM.

Interviews with so-called "audience members" that say how they HATED having to fake-clap for him.

The EX-Wife (you KNOW its coming) saying how much she HATED faking it with him.

This is the GREATEST TIME EVER!!!!!!!!!!!

If anyone could stand the swill out of Beck's mouth, particularly after his racist Jew baiting against George Soros, then they have an iron stomach that any caring, truthful, and fair person could never embrace. Beck ended up being the worst sort of racist and he pushed that point of view endlessly. He will have a lot to undo and apologize for before he has an ounce of credibility. That he made piles of money with his hate speech and his anti-semitic drivel is not all that impressive to me. The devil pays high wages.

Among the many distressing things about SaudiFAUX "News"; perhaps the most distressing is that their other hosts have not come under as much "intense scrutiny" as Beckyboy.

Bill0 issued a Fatwa on Dr. George Tiller and should be sharing a cell with the assassin. inSeannity simply lies every time he opens his mouth. The only person in their "news" operation who isn't a unapologetic propagandist, and major idiot, is Shep Smith and he only bucks the stream a couple times a year.

When is the "librul media", namely CBS, ABC, NBC, and PBS going to report the truth? The simple truth that this insane, Saudi funded, Australian and his pet gob of suet, Roger Ailes, are enemies of this country, rational thought, and the human race?

Color of Change should go after someone else on Fox next, and another one, and another one.

Let the sniping begin...because you know anything involving Beck and FOX News will get uglier before it gets better.

While it is true that Beck has built an impressive media empire, in my observation it hinges on Beck's daily presence on TV. He was willing to work cheaply for FOX to maintain that visibility. And now that is gone.

I don't see Beck maintaining his empire while based in radio. Sure, Limbaugh has done it...but Limbaugh is a different character. And Limbaugh works solo on radio. Beck is nothing more than a glorified zoo radio shock jock with a supporting cast. They come across as either juvenile or mean...or both. And he can't do blackboard stuff on radio...he not "the professor" on the radio.

I honestly don't think Beck's prospects are very good. And you know his are probably old enough now to understand that many people think their father is deranged. As much as Beck loves the money, don't be surprised if he pulls back a little.

        Could not agree MORE!

The whole "I'm going to do specials for FOX" is a total ruse to make it look like the parting is amicable--But Fox is DONE-ZO with Beck.

He is SUCH a meglomanic that I too think he is believing his own press and thinks he will be just as (if not more) successful without FOX-otherwise he would'a behaved himself and not jumped off the GRAVY TRAIN!

Rude awakening in store for Beck! Couldn't happen to a nicer guy! Or a BIGGER DOUUUSHE BAG!

        SUCKS TO BE YOU, BECK!

Glenn thinks Fox is retaliating in public.

These words are proof positive that GB is completely unaware of the world around him. For the Fox, it is business and personal; a tough combo to be sure.

Pity him. He knows not what he does as he is only in it for the money. Fox will separate themselves quickly from him.

In the meantime, thanks for the lessons Glenn, and who get to determine the bets on when a fool and his money will be parted?

Beckie has a mean streak and a nasty temper, when his isn't on Fox, and they won't take his trash documentaries and his appearances dwindle, he will unleash a torrent of bile against them. I have no sympathy for him or for Fox. They richly deserved each other.

I had a very scary thought last night. What if Beck really was the sacrificial lamb? What if it was by design that he became more outrageous in order to take the focus off of the more subtle brainwashing tactics of the rest of the right. Have I gone off the deep end? Too much radical right?

You're right, they're good at stagecraft but bad on reality. We have to remind ourselves that these are the same people that brought you PUMA, ACORN, and the attacks on Shirley Sharrod and the NAACP.

When Fox News dumps a host, that says volumns. I wouldn't be surprised if Beck wrote about a book about his adventures at Fox News. It may not be this year or next, but the next five years after things cool down a bit.
