In One Night, Keith Olbermann Obliterates Eric Bolling’s Fox Ratings

June 23, 2011 9:08 am ET by Eric Boehlert

This week, Keith Olbermann debuted his Countdown show on Current TV, having left MSNBC earlier this year. According to Nielsen numbers released by Current, Countdown’s Monday night debut attracted 179,000 viewers between the ages of 25-54. It was an impressive showing for Current, a cable channel whose primetime audience in the past has hovered around 30,000 viewers.

Countdown did well enough to beat out its CNN competition in the 8 p.m. time slot. What’s also telling is how, in just one night, Olbermann managed to completely obliterate the ratings of Fox’s Eric Bolling, whose nightly Fox Business show continues to be mired in a ratings wasteland.

We recently detailed Bolling’s Nielsen woes and how the rising Fox News star seems to failing upward under Roger Ailes. And we noted that for the all-important 25-54 demo, Bolling's nightly program this spring averaged just 14,000 viewers. (For the record, there are 122 million 25-54 year-olds in America; just 14,000 of them watch Bolling.)

So, 179,000 demo viewers for Current newcomer Olbermann vs. 14,000 demo viewers for established Fox anchor Bolling.

What must also be embarrassing for Bolling is that Fox Business and Current TV are available in roughly the same number of cable homes in America; 60 million. It’s just that early on at least, a lot more people are watching Olberman than are watching Bolling.

I for one am proud to be a part of the 121,986,000 25-54 year olds who don't watch Bolling. And the best part is, I have 29 more years to be in that slice of the demographic (I doubt I will hit thirty, or forty, or fifty and one day wake up a Fox Republican).

It is hilarious- that MMFA didn't compare his #'s to O'Reilly... KO is current's A team. fox puts Bolling up against their #1 show in primetime, as if they even expect anyone to watch him. Sad, so sad...

But doesn't Almighty Fox, no matter what, always beat every puny opponent in the ratings. FoxNooseBiz should be glorious in their ratings supremacy always. All hail Ailes!

When you're comparing apples and oranges, one should stick to apples and oranges. That's why watermelons aren't brought into the discussion.

The article is about Keith Olbermann and Eric Bolling. If you want to bring O'Reilly into the talk, write your own blog.

That's pretty impressive for a cable network that's been hidden among the Cooking, Travel and Infomercial channels. I actually have to hunt for it on my Cable.

You can check if Current is available in your area right on their website: http://current.com/

There is a little box about mid-way down. Type in your zip code, and it will tell you if your media company (Cable/Satillite/FTTH) carries it, and on which channel.

I have Fox Business in my basic package, but Current is on some other subscription level.

I think another factor that should be considered is that non-wingnuts sometimes watch Fox channels to keep an eye on the enemies of the country, while Foxbots generally are afraid to watch anything that might expose them to some truth.

That being said, the whole ratings game is pretty irrelevant to me. I understand MMFA's point in reporting this, as a response to the Wingnut CReed of Ratings=Truth, but I hope they don't get too caught up in it.

I agree. It's the quality of the program that really counts, not what rating share is. Of course, we notice the demographics of the situation and see that younger people watch much more of the progressive programming and the Faux views tend towards seniors.

Which does make me wonder about my generation (boomers) how they are so messed up.

But ratings aren't why I watch Olbermann over Bolling. It's because Olbermann actually fund raised for free clinics and Bolling is working overtime trying to get them shut down

I suspect Bolling will double down and then double down again on the crazy and the hateful and the spiteful, usually a winning game plan on FOX.

If so, I only hope that instead this brings him what he truly and richly deserves!

I got extremely irritated last night. My wife informed me that Keith is back on Current TV. Bear in mind, our local cable supplier is Fios, which gives us a lot of basic channels. (We don't subscribe to the HBO/Showtime/Cinemax package).

So at 8 pm EST, I happily tune in to Channel 192, and after a few seconds of black screen, the following message pops up:

"YOU ARE NOT SUBSCRIBED TO CURRENT TV. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SUBSCRIBE, PLEASE...."

MSNBCTV.com provides entire shows of its primetime line-up for internet viewing, broken up into segments, each with its own 20 second commercial. That is a win/win formula.
Current TV could do the same.

Some day, when the unicorns return, Cable companies will be forced to offer a la carte selections, so that we can subscribe only to the channels we want. I really resent having to subsidize the Church Channels in order to get TV Land, Sci Fi, History International, etc.

The content providers and the MSOs put the package groups together. It's always a big wrestling/negotiating match. You also have to toss in your particular local government's Cable Franchise agreement into the mix as well. The local FAs impact what's on cable a lot more than you might think.

I believe they're called "residents" in nursing homes, and "patients" in the asylums, but your point stands.

OT, but I'm at home this am, and just saw a bit on TV with the new Miss USA. Let me make it clear, I generally have no interest in beauty pageants, but it was sort of cool to see a winner ( from my state, no less) who sounds a lot more lucid and bright than Sarah of the North, and is very vocal about her support of legalized marijuana and gay marriage.

Mostly because I know it's gotta burn to the Real America beauty pageant fans.

It IS early but that's in Keith's favor. I don't think a lot of his former fans are still completely aware of his gig on Current or they don't have the channel in their lineup. I think that he is going to kick some tail as time goes on and who knows, maybe Rachel decides to move over and join him.

For those who wish to watch the show, but are blocked by corporate cable monopolies you have no power to change... you can easily grab the show online until someone provides you access to what you should have access to in the first place- a free TV show.

      http://thepiratebay.org/search/countdown%20keith%20current/0/99/0
will return all relevant results. Grab Vuze (or another torrent program), download the file and watch away on your favorite video player until the cable giants give the viewers access to the channels they desire. These files are clean 99 percent of the time, if you're untrustworthy just check out the comments.

After all, if you don't have the channel, downloading it online is not "stealing" the program or harming his ratings (assuming you're a nielsen family), because you don't have the channel anyways.

So, 179,000 demo viewers for Current newcomer Olbermann vs. 14,000 demo viewers for established Fox anchor Bolling.

Well, to be fair, Olbermann is a lot more established of a media figure than Bolling will ever hope to be, but the latter has obviously been on television a lot more recently while Keith has been off the air for 6 months, until Monday's debut.

Regardless, it's an embarrassing statistic to see how terrible Fox Business' numbers are. They will continue to wallow in the waste pit... their programming is atrocious.

MMFA is comparing Bolling to Olberman! Even after they have made such a huge effort to tell everyone how little ratings matter.

Everyone knows Bolling is a bust, and FOX will give him the hatchet soon enough.
