Like Fox News, Washington Post, USA Today And CNN All Run Hoffa Comments Out Of Context

September 07, 2011 9:20 am ET by Eric Boehlert

This is what happens when the mainstream press chases manufactured, right-wing media controversies: The alleged stories are built upon lies and when trying to detail the faux controversies, the press just ends up repeating the right-wing fabrications.

Background: On Monday, Fox ran clips of a speech that Teamsters President James Hoffa delivered at a Labor Day rally, editing his comments to make it sound like he was urging violence against Republicans:

President Obama, this is your army. We are ready to march. Let's take these son-of-a-bitches out.

But as Media Matters has noted, that’s not what Hoffa said. Or rather, those are fragments of what Hoffa said, stitched together in a way to change the meaning of his remarks.

Here was his comment. And in full context, it’s clear Hoffa isn’t threatening anyone, as conservatives hysterically claimed, but urging voters to turn Republicans out of office via the ballot box:

President Obama this is your army. We are ready to march. And president Obama we want one thing: Jobs. Jobs. Jobs. Jobs. Jobs. Jobs. Jobs. Jobs. That's what we’re going to tell him. He’s going to be - and when he sees what we’re doing here he will be inspired. But he needs help and you know what? Everybody here's got to vote. If we go back and keep the eye on the prize, let's take these sons of a bitches out and give America back to America where we belong! Thank you very much!

See the entire portion of the Hoffa quote that has to be omitted in order to created the Hoffa quote Fox News hyped? And sure, we’d expect Andrew Breitbart bloggers and Washington Times columnists to push the phony, stitched-together Hoffa quote.

The problem is so did the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday. (In a subsequent article, the Times got the Hoffa quote right.)

And so too, it turns out, did the Washington Post, USA Today and CNN. Even after Media Matter had debunked the Fox News charade, all those news outlets used the doctored, Foxified quote, leaving out the part where Hoffa was clearing referring to voting Republicans out of office. (USA Today at least used an ellipsis to indicate to readers that parts of Hoffa’s quote were skipped over.)

In no instance is it okay for journalists to take a portion of somebody’s quote at the beginning of a paragraph, tie into together with a portion of a quote –mid-sentence-- at the bottom of the paragraph, skip everything in between and pretend that person is being accurately quoted.

And especially when the doctored quote is the entire basis for the so-called controversy.

By not using ellipsis they are creating a quote from Hoffa that he never said in order to create public contempt for him and what he represents--that's libel.

Using ellipses to alter the original meaning is dishonest too. Let's take a look at what MidnightWriter wrote above (my apologies for this, MW! I hope you understand!):

"Check sources?" "Print retractions?" What kind of loony talk is that? They all got to see the Fox video, and we all know that if it came from Fox it can be trusted because Gretchen Carlson is fair and balanced and sits on the middle couch!

Besides, each and every one of them gave some attention to Charles Koch telling his billionaire big baby club that Obama is Saddam Hussein, right?

        That is the entire post.

If I used ellipses to alter the meaning of the post, that would be dishonest. For example, if I claimed MidnightWriter actually wrote this:

... [W]e all know that if it came from Fox it can be trusted ...

That is what Fox News did here and even ellipses would not help things.

Of course it's still dishonest and they do it all the time, but I think the ellipsis would protect against libel in a court of law. Omitting the ellipsis and effectually creating a whole quote that was never said is libelous. Unfortunately, they're allowed to be dishonest.

It doesn't matter what correction is made at this point. The water has been muddied too much by outlets that are supposed to be trusted better than FOX. Most will say that the truth lies "somewhere in the middle" even when the evidence is placed directly in front of them.

A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes. -Mark Twain

This is a prime example example.

If you eliminate the critical context of a quote to manufacture a controversy, then you are fabricating the news to suit your agenda.

Right-wingers, unplug from the propaganda if you care about truth. How many examples do you need before you realize you are being played like a fiddle?

The only way nowadays to avoid this kind of mistreatment is to be bland and repetitive - British PM's know this, and can be caught on camera inanely repeating the same 'answer' to six different questions. Of course, their words have all the impact of a marshmallow blowdart. Hoffa was doomed to calumny the minute he used the colorful phrase "take these sons-of-a-bitches out", and would be doomed to irrelevance otherwise.

I'd rather have him in the news. The tea party is very unpopular, most people would agree that they are sons of bitches.

What is it with you idiots and George Soros? lol Do you have any proof that he has any influence whatsoever over the content here or that MMFA doctors clips? If so, present it. If not, stfu and take your prissy, whiny b.s. back to WorldNetDaily where it belongs.

Oh, don't look for wareagle to actually articulate anything.

He pops in here from time to time to screech, "Misinformation Matters!" "Soros!" and "Obamacare!" Then he scurries away.

He's one of our duller trolls.

I don't know. I watched CNN's coverage Tuesday night. All I heard them mention was the profanity. In fact of all the news stories I've heard, from various sources, most of them mentioned the profanity, not the "take them out".
