NRA Fundraises Off 9-11

September 12, 2011 10:33 am ET by Chris Brown

Yesterday, on the tenth anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks, the National Rifle Association (NRA) sent out an e-mail titled "Remember September 11."  The e-mail sent from NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre began by recounting the bravery of fireman on 9-11 and American troops in Afghanistan, some of whom "share their memories" in the next issue of one of the NRA's many magazines. Then it asked people to text donations to the NRA Foundation to "help us tell more stories like theirs."

I guess we all remember 9-11 in different ways.

NRA Text

(Section highlighted. Full e-mail below)

"Freedom itself was attacked" read another NRA e-mail sent to members on September 10. The appropriate response according to the NRA: buy a some stuff from the NRA store to help fund the gun lobby.

The e-mail read:

American freedom remains under attack. On the 10th anniversary of 9/11, preserve your right to self defense and promote our national defense by continuing your commitment to America's foremost defender of liberty - The National Rifle Association of America.

Then they tried to unload some "Don't Tread On Me" mugs. According to the email, "100%" of profits from sales "go directly to support vital NRA programs."

How would private ownership of guns prevented 9/11? If we allow Johnny Redneck to pack his pistol onto a flight, we also have to allow the terrorists to pack heat as well. Frankly, I don't really want to be trapped in a tin can thousands of feet above the ground with lots of people carrying guns. People are rude enough as it is.

Ah, but you're applying some reasoning and common sense to the matter. All many of the people that this appeals to sees is 'big guvmin tryin to take our guns!!!'. It's terrifying to see so many 'might makes right' people with access to dangerous firearms (and always pushing for more access to them). It's actually beyond terrifying to think that to many of these people, shooting somebody is a perfectly logical and rational response in many situations. They take the 'intellect' out of humanity entirely and attempt to reproduce the scene from 2001 where the one group of apes smash the other with the leg bones. Except in the case of these people the leg bones are guns (I'll not claim that they're much smarter than those apes though, just that the weapons being used are different).

Applying reasoning and common sense is the problem, okay, now I get it. But, I thought that Liberals were mentally disturbed?

Not to mention that all those bullets flying around will eventually puncture a hole in the fuselage and depressurize the plane.

And a few of the passengers, too, no doubt.

Actually, the TV show Mythbusters proved that this wouldn't happen. It's one of those movie myth kinds of things that people just assume is true.

Besides, if the airlines issued frangible ammo, it would minimize the potential for slight decompression. It takes a huge hole to do a full decompression!

Can you please show us (credible links only...as always) please where the NRA has advocated for concealed weapons on commercial flights?

I'm going to help you out because I know you'll disappear into the ether on this one...

        Your outhouse reading for today is U.S. Statute 49 CFR 1540.5 & U.S. Statute 49 CFR 1540.111(a) & U.S. Statute 49 USC ยง46505.

Feel free to report back to the forum with your new found knowledge.

who said that? The NRA does fine work, now we all are really free, NRA-style. You seem like the sort that should be well armed in public, I have that impression from all of your posts. I think the NRA fundraising off of a tragedy like 9/11 is a tad morbid and opportunistic T-Bone Slickens, that is how you feel as well, I am sure.Perhaps we should drop our support for such a flagrant misuse of such a sad event , huh?

I will support you 100% on not politicizing 9/11. No argument there.

If you read my post again, carefully, you'll see I was responding to epk...851's misinforming claim that the NRA is/has advocated for concealed weapons on commercial flights which is of course blatantly false. Not to mention against federal law.

Just pointing out the error of his/her way.

Now about your "impressions"...you really should get help with that.

After 9/11, the FBI attempted to use the "Brady Bill" database to cross-reference the terrorist watch list to see if any terrorists were attempting to buy guns. When John Ashcroft heard about this he put a stop to this saying that the information should not be used in that way as it would be a violation of the gun owner's right to privacy. This from the same people who took wholesale rights from us in the name of fighting this same scourge.

Let's face it, the main reason 9/11 happened was the airline industry lobbied the FAA and congress to stop any legislation to improve airline safety for decades. Why? because improvements cost MONEY.
