O'Reilly Enlists In Beck's Campaign Against Frances Fox Piven

October 03, 2011 10:20 pm ET by Zachary Pleat

Bill O'Reilly appears ready to take on Glenn Beck's crusade against City University of New York professor Frances Fox Piven. After airing comments Piven made in support of the Occupy Wall Street protesters, O'Reilly called Piven a "communist sympathizer" who O'Reilly said was "outed by Glenn Beck."

What O'Reilly did not point out is that Beck's constant demonization of Piven led to death threats:

On his daily radio and television shows, Glenn Beck has elevated once-obscure conservative thinkers onto best-seller lists. Recently, he has elevated a 78-year-old liberal academic to celebrity of a different sort, in a way that some say is endangering her life.

Frances Fox Piven, a City University of New York professor, has been a primary character in Mr. Beck's warnings about a progressive take-down of America. Ms. Piven, Mr. Beck says, is responsible for a plan to "intentionally collapse our economic system."

Her name has become a kind of shorthand for "enemy" on Mr. Beck's Fox News Channel program, which is watched by more than 2 million people, and on one of his Web sites, The Blaze. This week, Mr. Beck suggested on television that she was an enemy of the Constitution.

Never mind that Ms. Piven's radical plan to help poor people was published 45 years ago, when Mr. Beck was a toddler. Anonymous visitors to his Web site have called for her death, and some, she said, have contacted her directly via e-mail.

Responding to these death threats, several professional academic associations called on Beck to end his vilification of her. He refused to stop his attacks.

Don't take my word for it, ask any 7 year old girl.
Shouldn't Billo the Clown keep his focus a little closer to home?
Death Threats? No, but his Wife's COP Boyfriend had better watch where his hands roam.

        Speak truth to power.

McCarthyism gets kicked up a notch when the ruling class and its lackeys get panicky. They are in panic mode due to the current economic crisis and the unrest among the people.

Bill has finally jumped right off the track. The poor guy seems to have gone delusional on us. His hysterical approach to label all who disagree with him has gotten to the comic level. Who can even predict how crazy he will get before this is all over. The poor thing seems to have lost all control on reason so he just spouts this derangement all the time. He may be a fellow Republican, but he NEVER represents my point of view any more! I do feel a lot of his problem stems from his truly racist ideas. It seems to just gripe him that this black guy is our President. Frankly, Obama is such a welcome relief after the diabolical Cheney-Bush administration! They spent our country into oblivion. Nothing conservative about them whatsoever.

Does the right have any ideas other than McCarthyism? I mean do you really have to be a communist sympathizer to think that Wall Street shouldn't be rewarded for crashing the economy with toxic derivatives?

And, even if one is a communist, so what? Can someone tell me what's wrong with believing in communism? Does believing in communism make you an un-American traitor or something?

        What is it, anyway?

It's kind of like the Christian vs Muslim thing. The opposing viewpoint might theoretically undermine the right's ambitions therefore they have the liberty to stop you from having it...

To wingnuts, freedom of association only matters when you're a teabagger or in the John Birch society.

Likewise that freedom of religion only covers Judaism and Christianity.

          Nothing else is freedomy enough.

I doubt their version of freedom of religion really covers Judaism. Judaism is convenient for them right now...as in...its the 'opposite' of Muslim. Most of them are for school prayer. Wonder how they would feel if that prayer was read from a Torah by a Rabbi....who does not believe in Jesus.

Many wingnuts I know cannot even handle being greeted by the simple phrase 'seasons greetings' at Christmastime. They get 'insulted' that an anonymous store clerk did not specifically and openly acknowledge 'their' holiday. And en masse they complain that their is a war against Christmas.

There's nothing wrong with being a communist, not that I have ever had the pleasure of knowing anyone who actually professed to being one.
It is just that labeling people as communists worked so well at identifying a "boogey man" for everyone to believe in and fear that the right wing is still pushing that meme.

Not that they are working at making "progressives" the new "boogey man".

the rightwingers also seem to think we're nazis. Well, half of them do. The other half thinks we're pawns of some worldwide jewish conspiracy. Which is odd. How on earth did these two polar opposite groups get together into the same faction the first place?

Dont try explaining to the communists and nazis are actually opposing ideologies. They'll just claim you admitted to being a nazi if you do.

Evil, Idiots, or Crazy? Will that question ever find resolution? No. No it will not.

I recently met Francis Fox Piven at a political science conference and she is a fascinating lady and brilliant scholar. She is mild-tempered and full of insight IMO. She is not a dangerous revolutionary or anything of the sort. I wish these blowhards would actually read her books and understand her nuanced arguments instead of employing shallow Red Scare tactics! Being critical of Wall Street does NOT make you a crazy, radical Marxist... It just doesn't. Good riddance.

Is this how he shows his audience that he is "more powerful than the president"? By calling an old lady a communist sympathizer.

Further evidence of how much of a tough guy Bill O'Reilly is. It takes a big man to take pot shots at 78-year-old woman when she isn't even there to respond to such an arcane accusation.

I wonder why he didn't have her on his show? Oh yeah, if she was on the show even at 78 that she could intellectually eviscerate O'Reilly.

This guy is such a chump. I get the feeling that his days on TV are counting down fast.

Professor Piven has been invited to address the students and faculty of some Christian college. The Beckbots over on Teh Blahz have already approached the college demanding that they rescind the invitation. The college answered back that while it didn't endorse her beliefs, they felt it was important to allow students to have access to them, to discuss things. They are slobbering all over themselves to paint her as some sort of evil, wild-eyed, dangerous radical, oh, and she's ugly and hideous, too. In fact, she's an obscure academic who has spent four decades teaching without attracting this much attention or scorn. She was a pretty much a private person before Beckie found her, she has a case for liable.

There's a Chinese Communist sympathizer in the US Government! He wants us to surrender now.

Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.), chairman of the House Energy and Commerce subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, said in a Tuesday interview that the United States “can’t compete with China to make solar panels and wind turbines,” ....

We can’t compete with China to make solar panels and wind turbines,” Stearns said.
