Fox's Latest Pelosi Smear: She "Has Totally Lost It" Over Payroll Tax Estimate

December 16, 2011 12:26 pm ET by Justin Berrier

Although the right-wing media are generally supportive of tax cuts, they often find themselves opposing them whenever they are proposed or supported by President Obama and Democrats. This is true of the proposal to extend an existing holiday on the payroll tax. The latest attack came from Fox Nation -- with an assist from CNSNews -- which mocked House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi as having "totally lost it" for comments she made about the payroll tax holiday and extension of unemployment insurance.

In a recent press briefing, Pelosi noted that independent estimates have shown that the two proposals "would make a difference of 600,000 jobs to our economy." On December 15, Fox Nation seized on a CNSNews article that reported her comments and linked to it with the following headline:

Pelosi Lost It

Fox Nation has never been a fan of Pelosi, so it's no surprise they would attack Pelosi as having "totally lost it." But maybe they think she has "totally lost it" because the CNSNews article it links to falsely suggests that Pelosi made up her 600,000 jobs figure:

"The payroll tax cut that the president proposed would put $1,500 in the pockets of 160 million Americans," she said. "The unemployment insurance extension is not only good for individuals. It has a macroeconomic impact. As macroeconomic advisers have stated, it would make a difference of 600,000 jobs to our economy."

Pelosi did not name those "macroeconomic advisers."

In fact, Pelosi did name those "macroeconomic advisers" -- right in her comment. She was not referring to a group of people who could be described as "macroeconomic advisers," but to Macroeconomic Advisers, an independent economic consulting firm. And as Reuters reported on August 30, "Macroeconomic Advisers, an economic consulting firm, estimates that extending the payroll tax holiday, emergency unemployment benefits and business expensing provisions through 2012 would boost employment by about 600,000 next year."

So Pelosi has not "totally lost it"; despite CNS News' terrible reporting, she has support for her claim. Macroeconomic Advisers is a reputable source, despite CNSNews' apparently never having heard of it. Moreover, Macroeconomic Advisers is not the only independent group to highlight the potential economic effects of extending unemployment insurance and the payroll tax holiday.

Can we say that Fox Nation has "totally lost it"?

Or did they ever have "it" to begin with?

Yeah, it would seem to infer that at some point in time that they had actually "found" it, would it not? The 3 times I have actually watched a portion of that program I have turned away saying, "what planet do these people live on"? I still find it astonishing that Gretchen is a Stanford grad. Say what you will but Stanford as a rule doesn't graduate a very high frequency of complete morons. Give credit to Fox on this one though. They found the best(or possibly only) stupid, Stanford grad, beauty pageant loser out there. No small task if you add in all the intangibles such as blond and things like that. I bet you could search the whole of the USA and find maybe 2 if you were lucky. Give all the credit to HR on this one. Just sayin'.

One more thing on Gretchen. If you could clone in Martha's patented sneer and Megyn's witty sarcasm, I am of the belief that you would have they perfect Foxbot. You could have Megyns looks and bad attitude, Martha's patented "dirty look" with added bonus of astonishment(over things like the earth is round), and Gretchen's incomparable stupidity that she is capable of applying to almost the simplest of topics, what what else is there to add? I fear that it would have to be sterilized though as to be wayyyyyyyyyyyy too dangerous to allow that creature to breed.

600,000 seems like a lot. But maybe. $240 billion extra to spend would be $40,000 per each of 600,000 jobs. And there would probably be something of a multiplier effect. It's far from ridiculous, although maybe a tad optimistic.

Most statements I've seen have said it would be $1000 for the typical family, not $1500 per person, however.

      It's still a good idea.

How many millions of jobs will that pipeline generate again, Fox?

Payroll tax cuts and extensions of unemployment insurance will put money into the hands of people that spend money and create demand.

I'm not sure how this is a controversial notion.

It is supported by Obama and most Democrats. See it is controversial. You just have to ignore the fact that the majority of Americans also support it.

So, here's the plan: Some items are too embarrassing to run [even] here at FoxNews. But we really want them out there. So we'll start up FoxNation. That way we can get all that dreck out there but still claim legitimacy. Brilliant.

I think my favorite part, whether it was deliberate lying or just stupidity, is mistaking the organization Macroeconomic Advisers for some generic individuals.

Like if somebody mentioned something being recommended by Consumer Reports... "What, some guy shopping told you it was good?"

More crack research by the dimwits at FoxPac.

The Democrats should never have even negotiated on the payroll tax with these clowns. If they had any balls, they would have put it up for a vote - BY ITSELF - and DARED the Republicans to vote against it. Then every single on of them should have taken to the media, every single day, to hammer it home that the Republicans couldn't support a tax cut that affected EVERYONE. That they just raised EVERYONE'S taxes. The Dem's need to learn how to DRIVE the agenda, and stop trying to constantly place nice with these bastards.

I totally agree, Eddie. I've been rolling my eyes at the Democrats' behavior since they took control of Congress in '07. It's not like they didn't see how to do it from 2001 to 2006 when the Republicans got every piece of trash legislation they wanted passed. If you think you're right and the public put you in office because they think you're right, then step up and do it!

Actually, the payroll tax cut (social security) does not affect everyone. I am under civil service and do not pay social security taxes.

Sorry, you are corrent. I meant this from the POV of all income classes. Of course it also won't affect those retiress who draw their incvome from savings and investments either. So, yeah, I misspoke. Didn't mean to imply anything by it.

The facts are all well and good. We know Fox is wrong on this issue, but the reality is that most Americans simply won't take the time to do objective research. It would be great if they did, but they won't. They won't. So, omissions and out right falsified information wins again. Folks, the right is winning the propoganda war. The Democrats and Progressives are allowing themselves to be beat over and over again because of this inane belief that, the average joe who knows more about American Idol than our system of government will do the right thing. The right wing has mastered the art of tabloid journalism to the detriment of progressives. We can't sit around and cross our fingers hoping that middle class Americans will suddenly take the time to objectively inform themselves while rejecting sensationalism in the media. It's not going to happen.

Americans have been pacified by an entertainment culture and have sit idly by while income disparity has reached epic proportions. Is there any doubt that the average 19 year old knows more about who Lindsey Lohan is dating than who represents their interests in Congress? How many Americans are actually going to take the time to find out that President Obama has presided over the lowest tax burden in 70 years? How many know that 1/3 of the Stimulus was tax cuts for the middle class? All they know is a continued meme that "the stimulus didn't work" or "Obama=higher taxes." Explaining the truth to people doesn't have to be a complicated intellectual exercise, yet we have seemingly adopted such a process. FDR didn't rely on complex explanations to get his point across. He kept it simple and Democrats held the house for 50 years.

Democrats need to adopt a play from the right wing playbook and fight fire with fire. Simplify the message. One of the most amazing things in this world world is the reality that a poor man votes Republican. That should never happen, yet it does. Why?
