Right-Wing Media Use Kantor's Book To Race Bait About Michelle Obama

January 10, 2012 12:47 pm ET by Jeremy Holden

Right-wing media figures are distorting a passage in the just-released book, The Obamas, by New York Times correspondent Jodi Kantor, to suggest Michelle Obama harbors antipathy toward "white Irish Catholics." In fact, in the book, Michelle Obama never makes such an assertion -- the phrase was injected into the book by Kantor herself and should in no way be portrayed as the thoughts of Michelle Obama.

Chicago Sun-Times Washington bureau chief Lynn Sweet cited passages in Kantor's book Monday and reported, "When Michelle Obama worked in Mayor Daley's City Hall in the early 1990s, she was "distressed" by how a small group of 'white Irish Catholic' families -- the Daleys, the Hynes and the Madigans -- 'locked up' power in Illinois."

drudge_irishWhile the right-wing media have seized on this quote to suggest that Michelle Obama had a particular problem with "white Irish Catholics" wielding power, the full context of the passage makes clear that the concern Kantor ascribed to Michelle Obama's was with entrenched power and political dynasties.

Indeed, the phrase "white Irish Catholic" is Kantor's. It is not sourced to Michelle Obama.

In her book, Kantor wrote:

[Michelle Obama] particularly resented the way power in Illinois was locked up generation after generation by a small group of families, all white Irish Catholic - the Daleys of Chicago, the Hyneses and Madigans statewide. "Someone doesn't have the right to be elected because of whose womb they came out of," she would say a few years later to Dan Shomon, her husband's political advisor. "You shouldn't have a better chance if you're a Kennedy than if you're an Obama. Why is it that they have the right to this?" [The Obamas, p. 18]

It is no surprise that Kantor's thoughts, and not those of Michelle Obama herself, would come to be used against the first lady. White House press secretary Eric Schultz explicitly criticized Kantor for injecting her own thoughts into a book ostensibly about the first family, noting that Kantor had not spoken to either President Obama or Michelle Obama since 2009:

"The book, an overdramatization of old news, is about a relationship between two people whom the author has not spoken to in years. The author last interviewed the Obamas in 2009 for a magazine piece, and did not interview them for this book," Schultz's statement reads. "The emotions, thoughts and private moments described in the book, though often seemingly ascribed to the President and First Lady, reflect little more than the author's own thoughts. These second-hand accounts are staples of every Administration in modern political history and often exaggerated."

Washington Post media reporter Erik Wemple has said that the narrative in Kantor's book "suffers from the lack of input from the principals."

Nevertheless, it did not take long for the phrase "white Irish Catholic" to make its way through the right-wing echo chamber.

foxnation_irish

Gateway Pundit's Jim Hoft linked to Sweet's post and accused Michelle Obama of being "'distressed' about the power of 'white Irish Catholics in Illinois." The passage was also quickly trumpeted by Drudge and Fox Nation.

From Kantor's The Obamas:

In 1991, Michelle left Sidley to work as an aide to Chicago's mayor, Richard M. Daley, the new and still unproven heir to his father's machine. She and Barack were nervous about the job. Daley senior had opposed the desegregation of schools and presided over an ethically challenged political operation, and the new mayor's first run for the job had ended in ugly racial divisions. "Having grown up in a proud African American family, she wasn't sure if there was a conflict between her values and his," said Valerie Jarrett, the mayoral aide who recruited Michelle and became a mentor to both Obamas. Jarrett, young, elegant, and educated at top schools, was an example of how the younger Daley intended to be different. She was from one of the best-established African American families in Hyde Park, a generally anti-Daley neighborhood, but she believed in gaining power to change things from above.

Some of Michelle's work was straightforward, like helping downtown businesses during a massive flood, but when she served as a liaison to agencies that provided for the city's most vulnerable -- seniors, the disabled, and children -- she was distressed by how heavily the projects were influenced by connections and favors. It was "the ugly underbelly in city government on how decisions are made -- or not made," Kevin Thompson, who worked with her, said. Underlying issues of poverty and education had little chance of being addressed. She disapproved of how closely Daley held power, surrounding himself with three or four people who seemed to let few outsiders in -- a concern she would echo years later with her own husband. At work, Michelle always seemed crisp and professional, but she could be harshly critical of the mayor's administration behind closed doors.

She particularly resented the way power in Illinois was locked up generation after generation by a small group of families, all white Irish Catholic -- the Daleys of Chicago, the Hyneses and Madigans statewide. "Someone doesn't have the right to be elected because of whose womb they came out of," she would say a few years later to Dan Shomon, her husband's political advisor. "You shouldn't have a better chance if you're a Kennedy than if you're an Obama. Why is it that they have the right to this?"

She lasted only two years before moving on to a job leading a program that spoke volumes about her conclusions. It was called Public Allies, and its aim was to train a new generation of urban leaders from more diverse backgrounds -- an alternative to the established power structure. Two years later, in 1995, Valerie Jarrett was unceremoniously dumped from her post: she was standing in the way of powerful developers, who convinced the mayor to let her go, and even though Jarrett and the mayor were close, he never spoke to her about the decision. The Obamas were horrified, their worst suspicions about that world confirmed. [The Obamas, 17-18]

The book is nothing more than journalism provocateur, intended to resonate with those who would love controversy and hate the fact that the Obamas are in the White House. Yet one more person profiting from the Obama Presidency.

She is still profiting off of the presidency, even if she has no ulterior motives. Everything in this book is based off of her impressions, and by inserting her opinions, as facts, into the book she gives detractors the ability to take things out of context.

From what I can gather from the extracts and background published about this book, it seems this is yet another example of journalistic projection of self masquerading as analysis.

This is indicative of the unfortunate confluence of laziness and self absorption that permeates latter day journalism. We used to joke that when journalists are interviewing journalists you are scraping the barrel. These days most television news consists precisely of that.

It seems that we are doomed to wade through an inordinate inundation of dross these days just to find a few reliable facts.

Yes. But ANY biographical author can be accused of the same. My point is not about anything more than how the book is being spun out of context by the opposition which can happen to any writer of non-fiction.

For instance, I have written a portrait memoir of my favorite aunt and uncle who have long ago passed. When my family reads it they say, "Well, that's not the way it was." I have to explain to them that in my child's mind that was exactly how I saw things and now as an adult that it is my reality whether it agrees with theirs or not.

As for an author "profiting"...well, that is the reason why most authors of any genre write anything.

Oh, so THIS is why every online posting that mentions Michelle Obama or shows video of her - whether it is on Youtube, Breitbart.tv, RedState, or any other rightwing blog - has the most vile, depraved, virulent, racist comments imaginable posted beneath it. And here I thought it was rightwingers that were blinded by an all-consuming white supremacist mindset. Turns out, they were just responding to Michelle Obama's racism! WOW! What's wrong with that woman sewing so much hatred??!!

No, you're wrong. You used the word in the context of, "as you sow, so shall you reap." Sow means plant. And your name calling is really benighted.

Sow (Prounounced like "how" or "now") does indeed mean "Female pig". Sow (Pronounced like "show" or "know") means to plant with intent of harvesting. They are homographs(same spelling, different meanings). When one sows (or plants) hate, it is a metaphor. It refers to the practice of spreading information intended to cause hate. The fruit they intend to harvest is the turning of public opinion against the intended target of said hate.

"Sewing" hatred? No, this is silly. It's a comical misunderstanding on your part of the expression.

I heard an interview on NPR with the author, Jodi Kantor. It is absolutely AMAZING (well, maybe not) how this book is being misrepresented by the radical right. If anything, Kantor's book is an exceptional work documenting the challenges and hopes that the Obama's share in being the First Family. The views being represented by the talking heads of the right are another example of purposely misleading the uninformed.

Once again, shame on the uptighty-righties for their biased extremism and constant failing of seeking the truth.

(The good news is that they are making a hit of this book. The far right will be highly disappointed they bought it if they actually read it).

And the difference between me (and probably a lot of you) and the media -- I won't even say RW media with this one, because I'm hearing this garbage from everyone talking about the book -- is that they see "white Irish Catholics" as the important part of that passage. I see this:

So, really Michelle Obama is opposed to the Chicago-style politics that the right wing accuses her husband of being an example of.

The way that the conservative media have tried to create controversy from this book really just shows how squeaky-clean President Obama really is. When it came to Bush, they ignored the obvious lying that he did over the Iraq War and the questionable ties to Haliburton. But they treat this book as a bombshell about a "secret" celebrity party at the White House--which turned out to be an event for military families that was open to press coverage. And now accusations against the First lady of hating Catholics because someone else said that she was frustrated at Catholic control of Chicago politics.

The more I hear the right's anger over trivialities, the less corrupt he actually looks, and the more positively I see him.

I have been thinking about this. I love Chicago, it is a great city. I was raised in the Northeast, and spent most of my life here - and I love it.

However, I have traveled to Chicago on many occasions, and I love the city. It isn't call the "Second City" for nothing. It is rich with labor, great schools, immigration, culture, food, and best of all, a midwwestern culture that is friendly and open.

It has its' problems. It has poverty, crime, and a government that has been known to be corrupt. I will never forget Richard Daley throwing the finger, on camera, to the Democratic National Convention.

If Mrs. Obama was talking about "Irish Catholic Families" perhaps she was thinking about the Kennedy's and how it was so unfair that so few could rule.

Perhaps she and the President learned a thing or two about how to lead the next wave of immigrants; be they from the South (into Chicago) or the Mexicans into the Southwest.

      Just thinking.

She wastes millions a year on lavish vacations that the 99% can only dream of, all at a time when many are having a hard time just buying groceries and gas, and she wants to cry and whine when anyone says anything negative about her. She deserves what she get.

Then you have the lavish parties the Obama's throw at the whitehouse costing a few million more a year. All this living it up on the backs of working Americans does not sit well with many of us especially after Obama ran on and promised CHANGE in Washington but it looks like just more political lip service because we have seen no CHANGE fron Obama and their isn't much HOPE we will see anything but business as usual.

Last I heard the government is "for the people, by the people and of the people".

Yes but it does not say take from the working people and give it to the lazy phucks that do not want to work.

Many blacks feel that because their ancestors were slaves that now they are entitled to other people's money. Both of my great grandmothers were full blooded Native American Indians and the Indians were treated much worse than the blacks but I am not asking for a free ride because of it, I have worked my azz off for what I have.

Blacks have the same opportunities as anyone else and in many cases they have better opportunities because they are more likely to get grants for education and to start a business.

Blacks do not help their cause by acting the way they do either. If you look at predominately black communities you see the highest crime rates and murder rates. You see the highest rates of unwed mothers and many have several children with different fathers and many of the fathers take NO responsibility for their children and leave it up to the mother and government to take care of them. You have 70% of the prison population are minorities.

So you can whine about Pat's comments but in reality they are pretty accurate.

You didn't have Laura Bush take 40 of her friends on an African tour costing the tax payers over a million dollars and their Hawaii Christmas vacation costing in the millions and staying at $10,000 dollar a day resorts all this when many Americans struggle to buy groceries and gas. The Bush family spent many of their vacations at their Texas ranch also.

Also I never said other presidents didn't take expensive vacations. We were not in the finacial crisis we are in now and they never campaigned on CHANGING the way Washington operates and to stop the wastefull spending and the Obama's have taken many lavish vacations and had many lavish parties at the Whitehouse that had nothing to do with other leaders visiting. So you go ahead and make this out to be because of race because it just shows how ignorant and blind you are. Obama promised not to operate like past presidents and to clean up Washington and he railed against the wall street bounsis but then after he gets elected it is business as usual just like past presidents that abused their positions. The problem with you is that because Obama is a black man you think he should be given a free pass on his corruption and excess spending but you are WRONG.

So Obama should have campaigned on the slogan NO HOPE FOR ANY CHANGE because that is what we have.

hahaha...yes spoken like a true racist. Laura and George Bush took more vacations than any president and their family in recent history. Don't know what the cost of their trips to Kennebunkport and their Crawford ranch cost but it wasn't an issue until the Obams took office. The Bush family had a ranch they could vacation at the Obamas don't and Obama is from Hawaii. Want to equate the wealth of the two families?

We are not broke altsoba and the Obamas have spent less time on vacation than any president in recent history except for Clinton. They have not had any more parties than any other president which makes your rant nonsense and only explainable by the color of the skin of the person who is presently in the WH. the nerve of them n***er's. It must be in their genes because black people always think they are entitled to someone leses money because of slavery right?

How many vacation days did george w bush take while president?
              Answer:

George W. Bush spent 879 days at his Crawford Ranch. This doesn't mean this was a vacation for him, he constantly flew in staff member, held press conferences, and met with 18 world leaders at the ranch.

879 days!!! While starting 2 wars and running the economy into the ground.

Bush Spent 487 Days At Camp David, 490 Days At Texas Ranch During

The planned three-day stay, during which the president is being joined by family and former and current aides, will bring his total time spent at Camp David to all or part of 487 days.
(imagine that bringing family and friends along)

Bush Spent 5 Times More On Flights To Texas Than Obama‘s Christmas Vacation Costs

Those who criticize the cost of Obama’s Christmas vacation don’t want you to know that George W. Bush spent at least $20 million taxpayer dollars just on flights to his ranch in Crawford.

Q: Is President Obama flying on Air Force One more than other presidents did? Is he being accompanied by more people on international trips?

A: Two chain e-mails suggesting that the president's travel habits are more excessive than his predecessors are off base.

"...I don’t remember the guy’s name, but I remember he went on for 10 or 15 minutes about how difficult it was for most Americans to make do with just two weeks vacation while the average in Western Europe is six weeks. By the end of that August, though Bush had only been in office since January 20, he had already managed 96 days of vacation time, or nearly 14 times as much as most Americans enjoyed during that period. As it happens, Bush ended up setting a presidential record for vacation days taken—977 days over the course of his two administrations or an unbelievable 33 percent of his presidency.*.."

How about this lavish party thrown by the Obamas.

Stephen Colbert on the Right-Wing's Alice in Wonderland Cover Up

"...Stephen Colbert does an excellent job of explaining to us why the right wing yammerers have clutched on a segment of Jodi Kantor's new book, The Obamas, to insinuate that our First Family is a satanic bunch of big spenders using taxpayer funds to entertain kids..."

see the segment here and boy does he blow your arse away altsoba. How dare them n***er's bring in Johnny Depp to entertain military families and their children. Don't they know people are suffering and what has the military sacrificed for this country to deserve attention @ tax-payers expense.

When the right-wing cries about "Chicago style politics" it's okay.

When Michelle Obama complains about "Chicago style politics" it's racism?

      I'm confused.
