VIDEO: Conservative Media Scramble To Turn An Oil Pipeline Into A Job Factory

January 19, 2012 2:42 pm ET by Jocelyn Fong & Shauna Theel

For months conservative media have advocated on behalf of TransCanada Corporation, the Canadian company seeking to build the Keystone XL pipeline through the U.S. to carry tar sands oil from Alberta to the Gulf of Mexico. After opposing every major effort under the Obama administration to stimulate the economy, conservative media -- led by Fox News -- have claimed that the pipeline should be approved because it would provide jobs even as it threatens the environment. Their job figures rely on industry-funded studies, and at times even grossly exaggerate those estimates. Watch as they struggle to get on the same page regarding which inflated estimate to use:

I'm willing to bet a lot of people support building this pipeline without a clue as to what it's for, or why it's being built, but they know the Obama Administration is opposed to it, so that's all they need to be for it.

Next up, Republicans advocate legalizing murder. Hey, if the president is against it....

And Obama isn't even against it. He's merely in favor of the pipeline builders saying what they'll do before doing it.

        1) Most jobs would go to Canadians, not Americans, and the thousands of jobs the pipeline is estimated to create are all temporary construction jobs.

        2) It will be privately funded if it is ever approved.

        3) The Republicans are against public spending on the American people. If, however, you can offer them public spending that will go to corporations, they are all for it.

Hope that helped, Liberal in the South!

It's hard to imagine anything more absurd. We're wasting our time, dinking around, arguing with morons over the validity of a freaking pipe designed to foul up our landscape, poison the ground and water, while it hauls the spoils of out-dated, inefficiant energy for the most, backward, vile corporations on the planet to pad their pockets with. As long as we allow this, we aren't in the universe of solving our energy issues. We are in fact mortgaging our future and falling further behind every day.

Today's political Right deserves no credibility. They offer zero in the way of forward thinking solutions and essentially act as a decaying fish corpse tied to the ankle of our nation as we are trying to run. I say ENOUGH!! No more playing nice, or giving unearned credibility. My advice to today's "conservatives"...... get de-programmed, learn to read, ween yourselves off of the FOXPAC teat. Till that happens, get out of way of the sane adults who are trying to improve things.

Heck, mary59, mmfvl was lucky to come up with that much!

The US invests tens of billions of dollars in the petroleum industry.

China invests hundreds of billions of dollars in alternative energy.

Chinese solar panels are so inexpensive and efficient that they are driving US solar panel makers like Solyndra out of business.

The US COULD be leading the field of alternative energy. We could be manufacturing leading edge technology for export all over the world. The reason we're not is because the Republican Party is irrevocably tied to the oil industry, and will not let America become the world leader in renewable energy sources. They just don't see the profit in it. And, it must be said, the alternative energy industry doesn't make hundreds of billions of dollars in profit each year with which they could support the campaigns of Republican politicians.

The Republicans don't want America to lead in the 21st century. They want to lead us back to the 19th century. They haven't said as much out loud, of course, but all their actions point that way.

THE point, obvious to anyone with a brain.....is that we need to make progress rather be bogged down as we've been too long by the moronic "conservatives" hellbent on clinging to the outdated, to the detriment of us all. Only an utter moron can't comprehend that making the needed changes will take time and effort, and the focus needs to be on starting the process, rather than moving backward.

So with that in mind, carry on with your idiotic strawmen and pleasuring yourself watching your FOXPAC heroes tell lies. It suits you.

          Strawmen. Nice ones too!

Yes, a lot of electric power in the US is generated by coal. Anytime we try to progress in towards different means of generating energy, it's typically folks like you who howl the loudest talking about how crappy those other ideas are and they'll never work.

Hey, lots of people said we'd never fly either.

Going back to my original point. Electric vehicles are better for the environment, because, they don't have emissions. And there are a lot more vehicles out there, than power plants. Get it?

See, this is why the Republican party is the party of the 20th century. The old way of thinking. Your old way of thinking will not last, it's physically impossible. Either we continue as business as usual and adapt to the problems that come with it, or we change the way we do things and at the same time continue our survival here on Earth with relative ease.

Well, here's some real job growth!

The Central Subway has received $72 million in New Starts federal funding to date. Environmental clearance of the project was granted by the FTA in November 2008, while approval to begin final design was granted in January. Service is expected to begin in 2018. The total project cost (with contingency) is expected to be $1.57 billion, with the federal government contributing close to $1 billion.

“After the hard work over several decades, today’s milestone brings us one significant step closer to seeing the Central Subway built, and will help us realize our vision of a 21st century Transit First city,” said Board of Supervisors President David Chiu. “The grassroots support for this project reflects the significant benefits it will provide to communities throughout San Francisco.”

The project will serve as an engine for economic growth and recovery in San Francisco, creating thousands of job opportunities. Recent estimates indicate that the Central Subway will support between 37,000 and 43,000 jobs over the life of the project.

Let's see, claiming more jobs with over a billion dollars of government money for a subway spur or having the energy needs of our country met, creating permanent jobs, working with our allies instead of our enemies and yes tweeking the envirofacists with utilization of a great source of accessible and affordable energy.....priceless!

This from the noted liberal rag The Wall Street Journal and this from the similar USAtoday or this from Faux Nooze.

              From the last cited;
"...U.S. sent abroad 753.4 million barrels of gasoline, diesel and other oil-based fuels in the first nine months of 2011, while taking in only 689.4 million barrels."

We are already the 3rd leading oil producing country on the planet. We are also the largest exporter of refined petroleum products. We don't have a production problem, we have a consumption problem. The oil from the XL pipeline wouldn't be "ours". It would be sold on the open market to the highest bidder and the profits would go to the multinational companies selling it.

So, wait. Job creation is bad now?

        What's your point?

Nobody has said that the pipeline is over and done with, yet. It needs more study. Congress put a stupid timeline on Obama to have a decision by this date, and he decided, not enough time to complete the studies required, so for now, Obama says no.

The oil coming from this pipeline is NOT going straight into the coffers of America. You do realize this correct? It will be sold onto the world market, just like we do. Just because this pipeline is coming across our country, doesn't mean we're getting the resultant oil or its refined products.

You guys keep seeming to miss that entire point. Don't you?

Which enemies are you talking about? Because, all of the countries we're getting oil from aren't our enemies, or are you talking about the evil and vile Muslims?

People who want to keep our country clean and somewhat pollution free are now envirofascists? Hmm, interesting take on things. Who made that word up? Sounds like a Neal Boortz-ism, I know you didn't make that up yourself.

The tar sands are neither very accessible and or affordable, since refining and transporting those oil sands takes a lot more work than say, plain old crude does.

The stimulus programs that these fools all opposed would have created more jobs than this pipeline, by two orders of magnitude.

Apparently we can't burder out grandchildren with debt, but we can pre-poison their water supply, pre-warm their planet, pre-foul their air, make thier land unlivable, and then burden them with the task (and expense) of CLEANING THAT UP.

But yes, by all means, let's vote Republican!
