Huckabee Wants To Know If Obama Got College Loans "As A Foreign Student"

January 20, 2012 9:21 pm ET by Matt Gertz

During a Fox News appearance this evening, Mike Huckabee suggested that Mitt Romney, who has come under fire for refusing to immediately release his tax returns, respond by challenging President Obama to release his college application materials in order to "show whether he got any loans as a foreign student."

Speaking on The O'Reilly Factor, Huckabee said of Romney, "Let him make this challenge: 'I'll release my tax returns when Barack Obama releases his college transcripts and the copy of his admission records to show whether he got any loans as a foreign student. When he releases that, talk to me about my tax returns.'"

From the January 20 program:

O'REILLY: Because of the media, the perception is if you don't release [your tax returns], you're trying to hide something. Look, Romney doesn't want his tax returns in the hands of The New York Times because they're going to cherry-pick it and make him look like a greedhead and he doesn't want to give them any more ammo. You know what this is all about.

HUCKABEE: Absolutely. And the thing is you get zero credit from the media for releasing them and then you buy yourselves a lot of grief. The question is, why would you help load a gun that's pointed at your own head?

O'REILLY: Because the people, the folks, most of them, want you to. I think that's the answer to your question.

HUCKABEE: Well, but he has to forcefully tell it why he's not going to, why it's irrelevant, say, "Look, I've disclosed more than I need to." Let him make this challenge: "I'll release my tax returns when Barack Obama releases his college transcripts and the copy of his admission records to show whether he got any loans as a foreign student. When he releases that, talk to me about my tax returns."

Obama's college applications materials - like his birth certificate - have long been the subject of conspiracies among certain segments of the right wing.

In May 2009, FactCheck.org assessed the claim made in a chain e-mail that Obama had attended Occidental College on a scholarship for foreign students. The email purported to quote an Associated Press story indicating that Obama's college transcripts had been released and indicated that Obama "under the name Barry Soetoro, received financial aid as a foreign student from Indonesia as an undergraduate at the school," and that the document "would seem to provide the smoking gun" proving that Obama is not an American citizen and is thus ineligible for the presidency.

FactCheck.org determined that "the claim is false and the story is a hoax," noting that the AP story had been fabricated as an April Fools' Day joke.

This is not the first time Huckabee has promoted falsehoods about Obama's background. During a February 2011 radio interview, he repeatedly claimed that Obama had grown up "in Kenya." Huckabee drew heavy criticism for his comments from the media and offered an evolving series of explanations for his comments, eventually blaming Media Matters for bringing his remarks to light and falsely claiming he had been taken out of context.

Either he is a bold faced liar who has no faith in our secret service or our election process or he is a racist of the first order. From Arkansas? Hmm a big heaping of racism with a smidgeon of stupidity and a reading challenged brain. This guy claims to be a Southern Baptist minister and I guess he is so he fits right in with their historical segregation and hate filled bigoted, racist speech. What a warrior for the Lord. Last I checked the Lord would tell him, "Depart form me, I never knew you."

By the way, 'stooopid' Huck, Hawaii is in the good olf US of A. And I am certain Governor Lingle is thrilled that you essenti9ally called that her, Hawaii's Republican governor a liar. She stated she personally observed Obama's birth record in the Health department there and indeed Obama was born there as his birth certificate clearly states. Of course, I guess Huck no doubt thinks Republican governor Lingle is a liar covering for the Democrat. Y'think?

Yep! You know Huck, if you keeps on with these lies, your tongue is going to drop off. Or so my single mom, left with 5 kids when my dad died, used to tell me when I lied about eating food I did not like. Of course I had been naughty and deserved it all as does Hutch! Then next step will be sitting on a chair for 45 minutes. My advice Huck, try just begging for a spanking but sadly, there was no deal from my Mom. Of course, Huck has always been so good at this sort of lying in spite of his ministerial years. You know that ministerial politician conundrum he always had. He seems to have honed it so well that he lies and then swears to it and then, never seems bothered about it.

I think it's fair to say that Mike Huckabee is both a bold-faced liar AND a racist of the first order.

That's what gives him so much Republican credibility.

Huccabee is pitiful. I have seen him lying on TV about the affordable care act now this low class idiocy. What the right keeps hammering of course is he is BLACK, he is different, he cant be a REAL American.

I hate to tell the morons on the right this but America noticed he was black the first time around. They arent going to suddenly find out he is black and not vote for him.

Actually all of these guys swill and anti Obama racism makes me determined to double my efforts over last election cycle this next go round. There was a whole group of us Republicans who bolted the party based solely on the right's un-Godly racism and it looks like it will motivate us once again. I found huge numbers of Republicans who felt the same as we did. I actually got a thrill that folks from the party of Lincoln had some pride in Lincolns godly ideals of equality for all that they were thrilled to work for Mr, Obama, We shall do it again next presidential season. I am convinced that Lincoln would totally disown Republicans because of this modern day racist horror that our party is showing now.

Correction: It was Bain who bought up the hard drives.

When the market for used, 150 k. hard drives crashed (so to speak), Bain sold the drives at a steep discount to a Bolivian start-up that specialized doorstops and it used the loss to offset bonuses paid that year. Then, in recognition of its failed hi-tech venture, Bain tried to lay off the guy whose name was on the drives, a certain Mr. Hewlett Packard. Because Packard was nowhere to be found, Bain instead fired 200 mill workers in S. Carolina. Business is business. You gotta take the bad with the good.

First they demanded a birth certificate, they got one and they still refused to believe it was legitimate.

Then they demanded a "long form" birth certificate, they got one and they still refuse to believe it's legitimate.

Now they want college transcripts and admission records, and if they get those they will still refuse to believe they are legitimate.

After that, they will want his medical records, and then his diplomas, and then proof of insurance for his car, and then they'll want him to take a drug test and get a body cavity search on national television, and then they'll demand that he call them 'massah'....

President Obama needs to refuse this and all other absurd requests at this point. It will never end, so why encourage them by capitulating?

And...so what if he did receive funds to go to Occidental. The simple fact is that Obama, whether he went by Barry Soetoro, or his given name, was never a citizen of Indonesia. He was a young child when he lived there, from ages 6 - 10, and could not have become a citizen until he was 18, according to Indonesian law. This is not difficult information to find to those willing to swallow facts - Hucklebery is one bitter Christian hypocrite. Maybe he should be asking ol' Mitt about his eight grandmothers if he is so interested in people's family trees.

This tax return stuff is bogus and merely lets the media keep being lazy.

Supposedly we're supposed to check if Romney would benefit from his tax policy. But we already know his policy is awful. It's not a matter for debate -- we've tried his policy over and over again, and it produces terrible results every time. Nothing will be learned from anyone's tax returns.

This just lets the media find other things to say besides "Romney's tax policy is awful, and that's not opinion".

Who the hell cares if Romney is immoral or hypocritical? He's wrong regardless, and that's all anyone needs to know.

The Super-Pacs haven't disclosed since last JULY.

As someone familiar with foreign student admissions to US colleges, the process is much more complicated than for US students and residents.
After an applicant has been accepted, he/she gets an immigration I-20 form from the university, with which the student can apply to the consulate for an F-1 student visa.
So Obama would have to go to a US consulate (in Indonesia???) to get a foreign student visa for a US university. Also, he would need a Indonesian passport in which the visa would be stamped.
It would be illegal for a US university to accept a student without verifying their F-1 visa status.
Here's what Occidental university (where Obama first went to school) advises its foreign students.
Here's some information from the state department regarding student visas.

In case I am not clear, I think it would be ridiculous for a US citizen to "pretend" to be a foreigner and actually get a "student visa".
It is also a lot harder for foreign students than US students to get admission to the same university. Why would Obama want to make it harder for him to get accepted?

Because of the media, the perception is if you don't release [your tax returns], you're trying to hide something
No, because of Fox News Channel the perception (they've been working overtime to create) is that the wealthy pay too much in taxes and half of all Americans pay no taxes at all.

And now we have a perfect guy to prove that theory, Mitt Romney, at an absolute perfect time too, so as to validate the claims that Fox makes about income taxes.

So if Romney was paying a lot in income taxes, he and Fox should want to use that information, they should be eager and proud to crow about how much (too much) the mega-wealthy Mitt Romney pays in income taxes...

On the other hand, were his tax returns to indicate many deductions and exemptions and tax-sheltered income and loopholes you never even knew existed, and as a result he paid a lesser share of his income in taxes than do most working Americans...

Well, you get the picture, you can see why they're going all-out to hide Romney's tax burden, versus crowing about it as they should be, were their rhetoric true about wealthy Americans paying way too much in taxes.

If you think his tax return is a "loaded gun" pointed at his head, then I don't think the media are the problem here.

Now here's some great advice. Gov. Romney has mangled this issue by trying to play it both ways - his trademark I'm for it, although I used to be against it. But I'll be against it again if you want me to.

I hope he continues to call attention to his tax returns by dragging out the process, only releasing a year or two at the start, make it as conditional as possible.

This is great news for Mr. Obama.

Not even a dog whistle. Just blatant arrogant racism. Huck - you should be ashamed to call yourself a Christian.

actually, it would be better if huckleberry said romney should say he won't release his taxes until he explains why a former baine exec set up a fake organization to contribute anonymously to his "unaffiliated superpac" then disbanded the fake organization immediately thereafter, thereby eliminating the requirement to identify who donated the money. that's what i want to know.
