Fox Moderator Chris Wallace: Debates Are "Stupid," Shun Policy Issues

January 27, 2012 4:26 pm ET by Eric Hananoki

Though Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace has moderated four Republican debates, that doesn't mean he has a very high opinion of their value to voters. During an interview on today's The Mike Gallagher Show, Wallace denounced the nineteen debates as "stupid" and unnecessary.

"Let's really get serious. It is ridiculous how many debates there have been," Wallace began. "This is the nineteenth debate. It is insane that there have been nineteen debates."

Wallace admitted that journalists gravitate toward questions about political horse racing at the expense of policy issues because policy questions "have been asked to death" and don't get as much headlines.

"I was a moderator on the panel of four of these debates, and they have been asked to death, 'What are you going -- What would you do to get the country working again? What would you do about Iran and the bomb? What would you do on immigration?" Wallace said.

"You're asked -- it's been asked, and answered, over and over again, so what you find yourself going to, because, one, it's new, and two, quite frankly, it'll make news, is, 'They've been saying terrible things about each other, their campaigns have been saying terrible things about each other on the trail, let's get them into a fight.'"

Wallace added: "Come on, if you were in that situation, would you really say, 'Well, tell me your tax policy?' I'm not saying it's a great moment in journalism, but on the other hand, they have been asked about almost everything a million times."

Wallace continued his criticism later, calling debates "stupid" and akin to "a car race. You really want to see if there's going to be a wreck or something like that." Wallace concluded, "They shouldn't be having these debates in the first place."

Wallace isn't alone in his feelings about the frequency of the debates. A former RNC chairman told Politico that the number of debates has gotten "out of hand" and Karl Rove recently wrote that "[d]ebates have nearly crippled campaigns." Conversely, The Huffington Post's Michael Calderone reported that CNN's Sam Feist and John King both "argue that numerous debates have been good for democracy."

Wallace's feelings aside, Fox News executives have used the debates as a way to highlight the purported difference between their "straight news" and opinion divisions. Fox News recently gave The New York Times -- a frequent recipient of the network's attacks -- access to its preparation for its last debate.

I really believe that the GOP Think Tanks thought this would be a good way to reach the Reality Show viewers. Seriously. The debates will probably be available as a DVD boxed set after the election.

The most entertaining part of this has been watching them eat each other alive over how they amassed their fortunes. We've seen criticism among them that I thought we'd never see from right wingers.

Hey Conch, I'm fine. Sometimes I just need a break from politics. Nice to know I'm missed [well at least by a few folks] when I'm not around.

Still enjoy Ranger-Bruins games, but it's not like the old days. And I'm pulling for the Giants [though I'm a Jets fan]

My hatred of the Bruins hasn't stood the test of time, the way my loathing of the Flyers has. I don't know if it's because nobody could hate Bobby Orr, and Bobby Clarke is a completely different story, or because some of the Rangers I loved were shipped off to the Bruins. Even though they played more years in Boston than in New York, the sight of Park, Ratelle and Middleton in Bruins black still looks wrong.

Half my family is Boston, and a kid a year ahead of my on our CYO football team was the Boston Patriots (and the old AFL's" first ever draft choice. That, and the fact that the 'Skins were my first NFL team, and it's impossible for me to root for the Giants, and I loathe the Cowboys. No big thing, though. I don't care about football in the least any more. There's a private school nearby (Berkshires) that opens for a community skate on Sunday nights. On Super Bowl Sunday I have it almost to myself.

You don't love "America's Team" (The Dallas Cowboys)? Lol!

Well, I could care less about them although that Jerry Dome sure is Nice! Thank you taxpayers of Arlington Texas for helping a rich guy get even richer. Corporate welfare at it's finest.

My town had a shot at getting that stadium but we turned it down. Yay us! We also got rid of the mayor who was endorsed by Mike Huckabee and wanted to initiate fracking. Who says all of us Texans (mostly transplants) are dumb yahoos? Ha!

On topic, I'm glad there've been so many debtaes. SO many chances for these clowns to show their collective behinds! Great fodder for the comedy shows although not so great for our democracy to have these eejit crank fringers representing a major political party.

                  As you were, sports fanboys!

I've also enjoyed the little clips of Newt and Mittens arguing over which one is more like Reagan. It's really kind of pathetic, especially since Reagan would be considered too liberal by the Teabaggers.

I can't believe you did that. I met her backstage at A Little Night Music (a friend had designed the lights) and told her I'd been in love with her since I was ten and saw her do a couple of (Disney) swashbucklers, Rob Roy and The Sword and the Rose, with Richard Todd. Gave me a big smooch on the lips. My animal magnetism or opening night adrenalin? Let's not go there.
Ever since you mentioned that you loved the Hardanger I've been holding on to this for you, waiting for you to give me a musical cue. Enjoy.

Many thanks for the link. I have a friend who built a magnificent hardanger some years back. He bought an old wooden-frame piano and cannibalised the keys in order to get the ivory for the inlaid decoration. It was a stunner!

While funny, I see this as a disturbing trend that started years back. They don't want to debate Obama, for obvious reasons. And they're setting it up so they don't have to. Sure, if this guy is just talking about the rightwing circus, thats one thing. But somehow, I dont think the rightwing is that honest.

It's the NASCAR GOP division. Just like all those wingnut NASCAR fans who swear they watch races to see who makes the smartest pit stops and what not, the wingnuts watching these debates are just watching for the "car wrecks". It's why Newton Leroy Gingrich has been doing so well. He will either or win, or he will crash and burn in a spectacular fashion.

He has a point. The GOP clown cabinet would probably be better off without the exposure. The more we get to know these clowns, the clearer it becomes that none of them are remotely qualified for the office they run for.

I am a Democrat, so I can sit there in front of the TeeVee and enjoy every second of these so-called debates with a bowl of popcorn and just laugh at how easy these guys are making it for my President to get reelected in November. It is awesome!

I've done that too. They are better than just about anything else on for shear entertainment value. That being said, I think that the best way to have a real debate is have no audience and have the candidates sit around a table to share their ideas on ONE subject, eg. education, immigration, etc. The audience just adds to the circus atmosphere while the questions often need to be better directed to force candidates to answer the actual question. Romney usually just repeats his stump speeches, while Newt relies upon the audience for a crutch. Neither of them are good debaters in the traditional sense.

There is one good thing that all these debates are illustrating: If the GOP allows - nay, designs - this plethora of debates which inadvertently mold its current image, it's likely that it's a preview of how they'll manage the country.

          Pay attention, America.

About the only thing that this many debates MIGHT be useful for is "consistency of message" by the candidates. This however means that you would have to watch every single one and I just don't think that anyone (least of all the right wing nuts) have that good an attention Span.

For you trolls out there who are wondering; where is the conservative misinformation in this story?

Wallace says we have talked about, and asked candidates about policy issues more than enough . "They have been asked about almost everything a million times." and "They shouldn't be having these debates in the first place."

      Get it?

It's better for Republicans if we don't ask about policy issues because when we do, they say things that make them look mean, unelectable, or stupid.
