Sally Bedell Smith's very own facts

Tuesday evening, Tucker Carlson announced that the "American public" has an "arrangement" with Bill Clinton: "We won't ask about your personal life. Don't talk about it. Right? I mean, that's kind of fair. I don't want to know who he is or is not involved with. I don't want to hear details about his marriage. But he keeps forcing them on us."

Carlson's guests, Sacha Zimmerman of The New Republic and A.B. Stoddard of The Hill, readily agreed. Later, when Carlson described the Clintons as "the one couple that gets the pass" -- that is, the one couple that is exempted from public speculation about their marriage -- Zimmerman and Stoddard agreed again.

And how does Bill Clinton keep "forcing" details of his marriage? Carlson explained:

CARLSON: I don't want to hear details about his marriage. But he keeps forcing them on us. Example A, Bill Clinton on the night of their 32nd anniversary said this: "We were laughing and talking, and believe it or not, the campaign even gave her the night off. We had about decided by the end of the night that the key to a long relationship was never being bored with one another, and I would still rather spend the night talking to her than anyone I can think of."

Now, leaving aside the fact that that's just a provable lie --

[laughter]

CARLSON: -- it breaks the deal we have.

That's it; that's how Clinton "breaks the deal we have" -- he said a couple of sentences about talking and laughing with his wife. To say this breaks some sort of "deal" -- or is, as Stoddard later described it, "yucky" -- borders on the insane. If this is the level of discussion of a marriage that constitutes breaking some sort of confidentiality agreement, candidates and their spouses break that "deal" regularly.

The truth -- of course -- is that there is no such "deal." The notion that Tucker Carlson and his colleagues in the media don't raise questions about the Clintons' marriage is absurd; the claim that they are the only couple granted such privacy is laugh-out-loud funny.

Even if you pretend the 1990s never happened -- pretend, for example, that the media ignored allegations that Clinton had an affair with Gennifer Flowers the way they ignored allegations that Bob Dole had an affair -- there is no shortage of examples of the media obsessing over the Clintons' marriage.

How many presidential candidates have been the focus of a New York Times article purporting to count the number of nights they spend with their spouse? The Times reporter responsible for that article later admitted that the time the Clintons spend together is "pretty similar" to other families that include a member of Congress -- yet we haven't seen the paper run such an article about John and Cindy McCain.

Despite the utterly unremarkable nature of the Times' findings, other media ran with it. Washington Post columnist "Dean" David Broder even suggested that the Times might have further explored a supermarket tabloid allegation that Bill Clinton is having an affair with Canadian politician Belinda Stronach. (Asked by a Post reader when he would write about the marriages of Republican presidential candidates, Broder responded, "Why would I write such an article? I know of no occasion for that.")

Most enthusiastic of all was MSNBC's Chris Matthews. In the days immediately following the publication of the Times article, Matthews asked at least 90 questions about the article on his two television shows -- 90. Such obsessive focus from Matthews shouldn't be surprising; he talks about the subject so much his viewers can be forgiven for occasionally wondering if the Clintons' marriage is more important to him than his own.

And let's not forget Carlson himself. He claims he doesn't want to know about the Clintons' marriage (even as he gets in a cheap accusation that Bill Clinton was lying) and that the Clintons get a "pass" on the topic. That is not only an absurd statement about the media as a whole, it is contradicted by Carlson's own previous comments about the Clintons' marriage.

Carlson wasn't the only journalist to concoct an excuse for exploring, yet again, the state of the Clintons' marriage. In a Washington Post review of Sally Bedell Smith's new book about the Clintons, For Love of Politics, Nina Burleigh declares "details" of the Clintons marital trouble "riveting as ever." But, according to Burleigh, she isn't simply re-watching a favorite old movie -- this is the director's cut, with never-before-seen scenes:

Smith rehashes the Monica Lewinsky year, and she's got some illuminating interviews with Clinton insiders who feel at last able to talk. There's John Podesta describing Bill angrily telling him that Lewinsky did not perform a sexual act on him and revelations from that keeper of the keys to Bluebeard's Cave, bimbo patroller Betsey Wright, on Bill's therapy, "addiction" and the no-longer-mystery woman who almost broke up the marriage. The details are riveting as ever. Who can get enough of POTUS sweating on the phone at 2 a.m. with a love-addled 24-year-old woman, placating her with job promises, knowing his world is about to explode as surely as a Sudanese powdered-milk factory?

Wow! Clinton insiders "at last" feel "able to talk"! Just imagine the pressure they must have been under not to talk all these years. Quick, grab a copy of For Love of Politics so you, too, can be riveted by these "illuminating interviews" that John Podesta and Betsey Wright at long last feel comfortable giving!

Well ... maybe you shouldn't bother.

That "illuminating interview" with John Podesta occurred a decade ago. And Sally Bedell Smith didn't conduct it; Ken Starr's office did. And if, for some reason, you still care after all these years what Bill Clinton said to John Podesta about Monica Lewinsky, you can save yourself the 20 bucks Smith's book would cost you by reading online the deposition Smith cites for her quotation of Podesta.

But if you do go to all that trouble, you'll find something curious: The deposition does not contain the quotation Sally Bedell Smith says it contains -- not even close. Smith quotes Podesta quoting Clinton as saying "I did not screw that girl" and "she did not blow me." Smith's endnotes claim these quotes come from "Grand-jury testimony of John Podesta, June 16, 1998, vol. 3, p. 3311." You can read that page for yourself here -- but you won't find anything like the words Smith says are there.

And what of Betsey Wright, the other "Clinton insider" who, according to the Post's Burleigh, was finally willing to talk to Sally Bedell Smith? If Smith and Wright have ever spoken, it isn't readily apparent from For Love of Politics. A few minutes with the book's index and source notes finds that quotes attributed to Wright are drawn from a 1992 Time article, a 1993 Washington Post article, 1994 articles in Time and The New Yorker, David Maraniss' 1995 book First in His Class, and James Stewart's 1996 book Blood Sport, among other previously published sources. None are attributed to an author interview of Wright.

In short, the "illuminating interviews" Burleigh touted turn out to have been conducted not by Smith, but by several other journalists (and independent counsel staff). And they aren't new details offered up by long-silent "Clinton insiders who feel at last able to talk." They have, in most cases, been available in published sources for at least a decade.

And, in at least one case, Smith quoted someone -- John Podesta -- as saying something that does not appear in the cited source material. That (alleged) Podesta quote is the first example the Post's Burleigh gave to support her contention that Sally Bedell Smith has "got some illuminating interviews with Clinton insiders who feel at last able to talk." Had Burleigh checked the book's endnotes, she would have known that this description was false, that Podesta's comments are quite old (if he said them at all). Had Burleigh taken five minutes to check Smith's endnotes rather than simply praising her for the supposed coup of getting Podesta to talk, she would have been able to tell Post readers that the words Smith quotes Podesta saying do not appear in the source material from which Smith claims to have quoted.

In addition to this rather obscure, if potentially revealing, mistake, Smith includes in her book at least two passages that ought raise immediate questions about whether it should be taken seriously.

On Page 288, as Bob Somerby first noted, Smith gratuitously includes Paula Jones' graphic description of the size and shape of the President's penis when erect. Jones description was contradicted by medical testimony; its inclusion in For Love of Politics serves only to satisfy the voyeuristic urges that cause journalists to continue obsessing over the decade-old Lewinsky saga in the first place.

On Page 101, Smith writes, "Bill was caught by White House reporters holding up traffic at Los Angeles International Airport for forty-five minutes while he got a two-hundred-dollar haircut on Air Force One from ... Hollywood stylist, Christophe Schatteman." In fact, Clinton's haircut did not delay air traffic. As I wrote when Ed Klein included this long-debunked anecdote in The Truth About Hillary, his 2005 attempt to swift-boat Clinton, "The incident, and the debunking of claims that he caused air traffic delays, are sufficiently well-known that it is nearly inconceivable that this is an honest mistake."

(Answering questions about her book during a Washington Post online discussion today, Smith denounced Burleigh for baselessly speculating that the Clintons might be together for reasons other than politics. Then she declared: "As Senator Pat Moynihan used to say, 'you are entitled to your own opinions but you are not entitled to your own facts.' My book is a textured portrait of the Clintons strengthened by the cumulative power of facts.")

This is the way it has been for quite some time: These "illuminating" new efforts by Clinton critics to examine the couple's marriage consist of little more than amateur psychology and recitation of long-known salacious details that most people have long since processed and moved on from.

Maybe that's why right-wing bloggers are so eagerly peddling new (but completely baseless) rumors that Hillary Clinton is having a "Lesbian Affair with Muslim Aide," as Pam Geller of Atlas Shrugs put it.

This latest baseless speculation manages to combine the sleazy sexual rumor-mongering Mickey Kaus and his kindred spirits in the supermarket tabloid industry unleashed on John Edwards with the disgusting attempts to play on anti-Muslim bias that drove the anti-Barack Obama whispering campaigns detailed by Media Matters and The Nation's Chris Hayes, among others.

As Dave Johnson of Seeing the Forest has detailed, the smear has spread to several right-wing blogs. And it is the subject of a typically venomous discussion at FreeRepublic.com, as well as speculation in the Village Voice and on MSNBC anchor Monica Crowley's radio show.

What was that Tucker Carlson was saying about the Clintons being the "the one couple that gets the pass" from speculation about the state of their marriage?

        Here we go again.....

Only this time it's Hillary running for the top spot.

Only in the minds of right-wing fanatics can rehashing old stories about.......

        Wait a second!

This has to be some kind of a joke, right? No part of the media, after the last 7 years, can claim credibility if they think that bringing up old Clinton sex 'scandals'?

For what? To prove that marital issues can be resolved over time?

To bring up that Bill had a popularity of over 60% through the majority of his two terms?

To remind us that during the hachet job by the idealogically driven Republicans, at the height of that, Bill's popularity was over 80%

To draw comparrisons to Bill's and George's popularity? Bill's was a consistant 60-80%, George had a near 90% for about four weeks after a certain date and had since crumbled to 24% about three years ago and has ZERO chance of going up!

Or are they simply getting warmed up, by rehashing their old attacks and trying to learn from past mistakes, like when the truth inadvertantly was used or when facts stopped them?

      Sit, Tucker.  Sit!

"What was that Tucker Carlson was saying..." indeed!

For at least the next year, the giant litter of ball-chasing MSM puppies that Carlson was whelped into can be counted on to spurt crap from both ends.

And then roll around in it.

      Good puppies.  Goooooood  Puhhh-peeeees!

      DRAFT:

Good puppies? Not hardly. Puppies behaving this badly need to have a rolled-up newspaper (preferably the New York Times) taken vigorously to their backsides, until they learn to behave and quit chewing up everything in sight and crapping all over the place.

These are NOT "good puppies". They are Bad Dogs, and they may be headed for the pound.

"I'll lie, and YOU swear to it! OK?" asks the latest dredger-upper of decades old Clinton smears and salacious tidbits, REPACKAGED as a new, improved, never-before-seen ULTRA-DAMAGING dirt compilation.

And the MSM? Sure thing, rumormongering rightwing author! We can't WAIT to gin up that old vast rightwing conspiracy to smear and hopefully destroy the Clintons!

      Disgusting.

The good thing about today's media is that it's so easy to throw individuals away.  One glance at "LAX haircut" is all it takes to never have to bother reading anything from Sally Bedell Smith ever again.  (Unless she apologizes and repents like David Brock, of course.)

Back in the day, you'd have to do painstaking research to see who was spinning you blind.  Not anymore.

(For example, Obama's pretending there's a social security crisis instantly thins the candidate field by one member.)

          SCOOTER:

Great points, but think on THIS a bit: The Rightwing smearmeisters (it's all they got!) spent so much of their time and OUR money (along with Scaife's) to "get" Clinton, and so many "scandals" they tried ... Whitewater, Travel Office, etc. ... went belly-up on them ... until, UNTIL MONICA!!!

Sixty million taxpayer dollars, and they found themselves something REAL! The Big Dog was getting a hummer! Hallelujah! FINALLY something that was actually TRUE! They were ecstatic. Their wet dreams all came true ... except one little problem ...

          NOBODY CARED!

They couldn't BELIEVE it. Here they caught Clinton actually getting some sex, and Clinton's POPULARITY with THE PEOPLE remained SKY HIGH! All that trouble, all that plotting, all that investigating and digging around for something REAL, they FOUND it, and it didn't do them one damn bit of good.

This couldn't be happening. The DEAL was, they find a scandal, everyone rallys against the evildoer, and he's chucked out of office. All they needed was that ONE true scandal, and it was a certainty, a done deal. It was their lodestone belief, their lynchpin rationale, their cornerstone master plan. And it went "pffst".

Of course, they impeached anyway, because they had the lockstep GOP votes to make the accusations. But it FLOPPED. Flip, flop, failed. NOT GUILTY on all charges, and the GOP had nothing but egg on their faces (kinda like that blue dress!). Nothing to show, all their hopes and dreams shattered.

NOBODY CARED, because they exposed themselves as petty, hypocritical, mean-spirited panty sniffers to all the world. And Clinton kept smiling through it all.

How would you like being Stranger, with heart, soul, and entire being invested in GETTING CLINTON, and having failed so utterly? It must be hell. And it would explain Stranger's very sad and disturbed personality. He's more to be pitied. Move along, and try not to laugh and point at the funny crazy man babbling about his unresolved hatred for the man who got the oral sex, and NOBODY CARED. How can it be? It's ... it's ... INCONCEIVABLE!

Tex, I wouldn't say nobody cared (or cares). There's The Stranger, and Sean Hannity, and Dick Morris, and Rush Limbaugh, and a small group of our fellow Americans who not only care, but are consumed by it.

Fortunately, many of them are very old, and will know peace soon.

Many are very young, and will grow out of their obsession with the "naughty bits"

And as the tabloid right wing hold on the media hopefully fades away, the rest will become completely irrelevant.

Yes, indeed, they care and they care for one reason and one reason only: They are jealous. Those morons on that list couldn't possibly compete with Bill and his intelligence and 'sex appeal'. Hell, I remember reading articles about how women were having 'sex dreams' of the man. Think those same women would have sex dreams over Hannity? Matthews? Anyone else?

I mean... just look at that pathetic Limbaugh as an example. He couldn't hold on to a female even if his worthless empty waste of a life depended on it. Three marriages, three divorces, and zero kiddies to show for them. No wonder he was hooked on Viagra - all to no avail, of course.

So, $50 million for possible lies about a BJ and $4 million for why and how we got attacked on 9/11!

Edison Misla Aldarondo, Randal David Ankeney, Dick Armey, Jim Bakker, Merrill Robert Barter, Robert Bauman, Parker J. Bena, Bill Bennett, Louis Beres, Howard L. Brooks, John Bolton, Mike Bowers, Andrew Buhr, Jeffrey Buley, Ted Bundy, Jim Bunn, John Allen Burt, Dan Burton, Neil Bush, John Butler, Ken Calvert, Charles Canady, Helen Chenoweth, Keola Childs, Roy Cohn, Carey Lee Cramer, Dan Crane, Paul Crouch, Randy Cunningham, Richard A Dasen, Richard A. Delgaudio, Peter Dibble, Brian J. Doyle, Nicholas Elizondo, Larry Dale Floyd, Mark Foley, John Fund, Jack W. Gardner, Richard Gardner,  Philip Giordano, Rudy Giulianni, Matthew Glavin, Marty Glickman, Mark A. Grethen, Jon Grunseth, Dr. W. David Hager, Ted Haggart, Mark Harris, Dennis Hastert, John Hathaway, Howard Scott Heldreth, Mike Hintz, Neal Horsley, Henry Hyde, Don Haidl, Tim Hutchinson, Paul Ingram, Bill Janklow, Bernard Kerik, Earl Kimmerling, Randy Steven Kraft, I. Lewis Libby, Donald Lukens, Pat McPherson, Jon Matthews, Jeff Miller, Nicholas Morency, Sue Myrick, Bill O’Reilly, Bob Packwood, Jeffry Patti, Brent Parker, John Paulk, Mark Pazuhanich, John Peterson, Harvey Pitt, Dennis Rader,  Ronald Reagan, George Roche III, Beverly Russell, Jack Ryan, Rick Santorum, Joe Scarborough, Ed Schrock, Dr. Laura Schlessinger, Larry Jack Schwarz, John Scmitz, Don Sherwood, Tom Shortridge, Fred C Smeltzer, Jr., Jim Stelling, Roger Stone, Jimmy Swaggart, David Swartz, Randall Terry, Bill Thomas, Strom Thurmond, Robin Vanderwall, Robert Waltrip, J.C.Watts, Jim West, Keith Westmoreland, Stephen White, Paul Williams.

(hint: look for sexual perversion and abuse,  and child molestation ... most fit those categories)

Now, tell us again about those guys convicted in relation to the nationwide S&L scandals, the ones who you claim were tied somehow to the Clintons?

Lots of folks everywhere took the fall for the abuses following Reagan/Bush DEREGULATION (including Neil Bush), but the GOP are in a class by themselves in terms of their FAMILY VALUES campaigning and their gut-wrenching record of hypocricy.

Keep it up, STRANGER. Your obsession becomes stranger and stranger. No. Leg. To. Stand. On.

                    STRANGER:

You are correct, Hubble did go to jail.

He went to jail for bilking clients WHEN HE WAS A LAWYER, NOT for anything he did while in public service.

                    A fine distinction, you say?

The PUBLIC was not harmed, and the illegal billing happened YEARS before he joined the Clinton Administration, so it is NOT a Clinton Administration SCANDAL. It was embarrassing, but there was no breach of public trust.

Contrast that to the CONVICTION of Scooter Libby, whose ILLEGAL ACTS were directly related to his serving the public, WHILE IN OFFICE. Libby spent NO jail time, but ONLY because he got let off the hook by his boss Dubya Bush (which Clinton could have done for Hubble as well, but DID NOT, letting the legal system work without his interference.)

So, you may win the specific bet about "jail", but the LARGER picture, about which administration is CORRUPT, and which one followed the LAW ... and which administration BETRAYED the PUBLIC TRUST ... that argument looks good for Clinton, horrible for Bush.

For anybody that didn't check out the link to the Freeper item, it's worth a trip to crazytown.Entire thing based on an "anonymous official" who says the alleged lover of HRC answers the phone in the morning and at night.

And don't miss the poster who admits she's good looking, but a "Pakisatan Muslim".

LEFTY....read those posts over at Creepier..What a bunch of stand-up Americans you have over there. Seems that you could say anything over there and the scribes would believe it. For example, "Newt admits having affair with woman while going after Clinton"...that bunch would deny, deny, deny until one of their leaders would write.."A WOMAN' and then it would be okay.

The thing the Creppers don't have is accountability. No facts..I tried to issue an invite to at least read MMFA but I don't think it will happen.    I believe that this lesbian thing is one of the BIG suprises the NUTZ had in store for America...glad they are forced to use it now. I think it should be splashed into the Media so that the meltdown of the Republan is completed.  People are tired of nonsense.

Rumors are swirling out there that the Hildabeast's lesbo affair is about to hit the MSM, but since the liberal biased media killed the Edwards story about his 18 mo. tryst with a little honey I won't be holding my breath.

I've an idea - Let's drag Bill's half-brother Roger out of the pool hall and put him up for election... - At least he isn't a HAS BEEN politician.

Actually, poll numbers prove you wrong. The mere fact that the right wing are, and have been constantly obsessing over Hillary shows that indeed, people do care about what she is doing, even if some of those folks don't agree with her.

Bill is irrelevant? Go check out what he's been doing since he left office. Umm, last I checked, he's doing a pretty bang up job being the face of America around the world, and doing some great work around the world with his foundation, not to mention traveling around with GHW Bush, again, representing America. Yeah, Bill and Hillary are so bad.

Not to mention saying that Hillary's successes are because of her husband is disingenuous at best. Please remember, whatever you think of her, she is an intelligent woman, who was at the top of her classes in law school, and had a great career before Bill became President, and has a great career now.

      - The Stranger - "After Mrs. Willey came forward with yet another instance of attempted rape by Billy Jeff Bubba, she was subjected to unbelievable harassment."

Really, then she would probably have some thing called "evidence" wouldn't she?

      "Her life was threatened."

Evidence? Should be easy to prove with phone tapes, police complaints, etc...

      "Her cat was killed."

Evidence (that it was killed by someone somehow associated with Clinton)?

"She was followed wherever she went."

Evidence? Should be easy to prove with photos, police complaints, etc...

      "Her house was broken into."

      Police report?

"her manuscript for her book was stolen."

      Police report?

"I am going to buy a couple dozen of this courageous woman's book and give them to my left-leaning, Hitlery-supporting friends and relatives to show how evil these people are."

Out of curiosity, let's just pretend that Clinton was indeed a "rapist" who had personally strangled Mrs. Willey's cat while breaking into her house and following her around town - how do you feel this compares to dragging the nation into a false war resulting in the deaths of nearly 4,000 Americans?

I assume you are also buying a couple dozen books about Iraq to distribute to your right-leaning, Bush-supporting "friends and relatives to show how evil those people are?"

Can we also drop the pretense that Republican men have penises? The thing that the GOP made clear during the 1990's was Bill Clinton had a workable penis and it infuriated them! Then, to leave no doubt in anyone's mind that Republicans not only had no penises, but also had no balls, they imposed a dickless mamas-boy and scared-of-his-own-shadow coward into the White House. Maybe Hillary will at least have the stamina to persue Osama Bin Laden, someone that Bush handed over his balls to in 2001, and allowed Bin Laden to remain undeniably victorious over the USA for Bush's entire duration in office.

Whether it's Tucker Carlson, Dick Cheney, or Ann Coulter, the rightwing flounders in shame every day at their lack of a working penis and set of balls. While I don't support Hillary because she's a Goldwater Republican, it's clear that America needs SOMEONE in the White House whose not a coward, and clearly the GOP is, by it's very nature, opposed to any form of bravery or willing to stand up for American principles or America's honor.

The hypocrasy of this whole thing is astounding.

      1) Repub's in congress go after Bill for lying about an affair.  Meanwhile their Speaker is having an affair.  (And... uh... lying about it?)  Then a couple years later, right when they're impeaaching Bill, the INCOMING speaker resigns over... wait for it... AN EXTRAMARITAL AFFAIR!

      2) All you hear from the Right-Wing blowhards is how Hillary (and dem's in general) talk out of both sides of their mouths, trying to have it both   ways.  So what does Tuck do? Spend five minutes saying he doesn't want to hear about [Clinton's marriage] and then, IN HIS VERY NEXT BREATH, TALKS ABOUT IT!!!

Tucker - the one thing you and I have in common is that we're both sick and tired of hearing about the Clinton marriage.  The difference?  You keep bringing it up!!!  (And uh... I at least try not to be a liar or a hypocrite.  While you (and your ilk) seem to make a concerted effort to be.)
