Glenn Beck and the paranoid style

December 18, 2009 9:16 am ET

"The modern right wing ... feels dispossessed: America has been largely taken away from them and their kind, though they are determined to try to repossess it and to prevent the final destructive act of subversion. The old American virtues have already been eaten away by cosmopolitans and intellectuals; the old competitive capitalism has been gradually undermined by socialistic and communistic schemers; the old national security and independence have been destroyed by treasonous plots, having as their most powerful agents not merely outsiders and foreigners as of old but major statesmen who are at the very centers of American power."

The above passage could fittingly be used to describe the character of today's American right. One need only listen to Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) lash out at ACORN's corrupting influence on the census, or Rush Limbaugh claim that the "socialist" Obama is a "puppet" of the United Nations. It was, however, written in 1964 by historian Richard Hofstadter as part of his iconic essay for Harper's Magazine titled "The Paranoid Style in American Politics." Long before ACORN was founded, back when Bachmann and Limbaugh were still in grade school, the American right was practicing this "paranoid style" to great effect, discovering communist monsters hiding under every bed and linking American presidents and Cabinet officials to the great communist conspiracy.

And though the Soviet Union has long since disintegrated, the paranoid style has endured. It found a new voice in talk radio and right-wing activism. It also found a new champion who, better than anyone else, emulates and outright replicates the conspiracy-laden rhetoric from 45 years ago -- Fox News' Glenn Beck. In his rapid rise from morning zoo DJ to the frantic Paul-Revere-meets-Don-Quixote voice of modern conservatism, Beck has crafted a rhetorical style that is every bit as conspiratorial and irrational as the '60s-era right-wing firebrands who inspired the political movement he now leads.

(To be clear, no one is saying that Beck or anyone else suffers from a mental disorder. As Hofstadter wrote, it's not a state of mind that's under examination, but rather it "is the use of paranoid modes of expression by more or less normal people that makes the phenomenon significant." Beck, however, has compared himself to mathematician John Forbes Nash, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia.)

Beck's roots in the '60s fringe

It's no accident that Beck is so practiced in the "paranoid style." His philosophical guru was one of the fringe conservatives that Hofstadter wrote about. As copiously documented by Salon.com's Alexander Zaitchik, Beck has spent the past several years studying and promoting the writings of W. Cleon Skousen -- "the man who changed Glenn Beck's life." Even in the eccentric world of 1960s anti-communist activism, Skousen was considered an extremist crank. Zaitchik wrote that Skousen "aligned himself with [John Birch Society founder] Robert Welch's charge" that just about every member of the Eisenhower administration -- including Eisenhower himself -- was a communist agent. Hofstadter judged Welch to be his era's foremost practitioner of the paranoid style; Skousen, for his part, authored a pamphlet defending the John Birch Society in which he argued that people who attacked the group "usually did so without realizing they were promoting the official Communist Party line."

As his increasingly strident anti-communist zeal estranged him from more respectable conservative groups, Skousen broadened his outlook and expanded the great communist conspiracy into a nefarious plot for world domination. Skousen's 1970 book The Naked Capitalist is a touchstone work of New World Order conspiracy theorism, and is also a fine example of Hofstadter's "paranoid style" in action. The Naked Capitalist was Skousen's review of Carroll Quigley's Tragedy & Hope, and in it Skousen wrote that Quigley was an "insider" in a grand "power complex" that will "eventually attain total global control." To Skousen, Tragedy & Hope was "a bold and boastful admission by Dr. Quigley that there actually exists a relatively small but powerful group which has succeeded in acquiring a choke-hold on the affairs of practically the entire human race." Quigley, in his review of The Naked Capitalist, accused Skousen of "inventing fantastic ideas and making inferences that go far beyond the bounds of honest commentary."

Skousen's globalist conspiracy is a manifestation of what Hofstadter deemed the "amoral superman," an enemy who uses his seemingly inexhaustible power and/or wealth to direct the course of history and bend it to his sinister will so that he might benefit from the suffering of others. The actors and events in Skousen's conspiracy are real enough, but the threads he uses to weave together the conspiracy are spun from, as Hofstadter writes, a self-imposed lack of "enlightenment" and a refusal to see "how things do not happen." Skousen casts himself in a similarly inflated role -- the beleaguered everyman whose unique insight into the inner workings of the enemy allow him to valiantly stand up in opposition, a mindset Hofstadter identified as "the megalomaniac view of oneself as the Elect, wholly good, abominably persecuted, yet assured of ultimate triumph."

Skousen's "ultimate triumph" entailed fighting back against "the whole superstructure of world-wide conspiracy" by removing from office "[e]very Democrat, Republican or Independent from the top of the Federal government right down to the lowest official on the local level, who has been consistently supporting the collectivist policies and tactics of the global network." This absurd and unachievable goal was Skousen's first step in restoring "American society to its traditional position provided within the framework of the Constitution as visualized by the founding fathers." He cast a pox on both parties -- Democrats were "the party through which the Wall Street globalists and the Left-wing international conspiracy have accomplished most of their subversion," and the Republicans "tried to out-do the Democrats in both spending and big government."

Hofstadter concluded of people like Skousen: "We are all sufferers from history, but the paranoid is a double sufferer, since he is afflicted not only by the real world, with the rest of us, but by his fantasies as well."

Beck takes up the paranoid mantle

On October 6, 2006, Beck interviewed then-CNN colleague Lou Dobbs on illegal immigration and gave his first televised indication that he was growing increasingly fascinated with the work of Cleon Skousen. Beck asked Dobbs: "Was Carroll Quigley right on the shadow government, on the companies taking over and really controlling everything? Because it's really the only thing that I can put my finger on to say, 'Why aren't we doing anything about illegal immigration?' We're run by companies now, aren't we?" Beck went on to say that he believes "global corporations" are turning America "into MexAmeriCanada."

It was straight out of The Naked Capitalist and, as such, fit nicely within the contours of the paranoid style. Hofstadter wrote about what happens when its practitioners find "the representatives of a particular social interest -- perhaps because of the very unrealistic and unrealizable nature of its demands -- are shut out of the political process. Having no access to political bargaining or the making of decisions, they find their original conception that the world of power is sinister and malicious fully confirmed." Beck, not seeing anyone in government pursue his preferred course on illegal immigration, ascribed this lack of action to the connivance of "global corporations," saying quite bluntly that "it's really the only thing I can put my finger on."

Beck's fascination with Skousen goes well beyond occasional references on cable television. Salon's Zaitchick writes that Beck first read Skousen's book The 5,000-Year Leap -- a history of early America that selectively quotes the founding fathers to present the founding of the country as a deeply religious affair -- in 2007 after a friend sent him a copy. According to Skousen's son: "When Beck read it, suddenly the effusive and disembodied principles of freedom that he had been trying to dig up and put together all came together and he could make sense of them."

It came together so neatly for Beck, in fact, that he put Skousen at the very heart of what eventually came to be known as The 9-12 Project. The day Beck tearfully unveiled the project on his Fox News program he gave away free copies of Leap to his studio audience. Beck told them that this "fantastic" book explains "the 29 principles that our founders put together, and how they put this genius country together." Beck also authored a foreword for the 30th anniversary edition of Leap, calling it "divinely inspired," and he sells the book on his website. Like Skousen, Beck casts the country's problems as a symptom of a drift from what he thinks the country originally was at its founding, and the solutions entail a return to that ill-defined notion of early America.

Beck even took to promoting and defending the John Birch Society. On the July 25, 2007, edition of his CNN program, Beck interviewed John Birch Society spokesman Sam Antonio to discuss the Security and Prosperity Partnership, an economic and security initiative of the United States, Canada, and Mexico that the John Birch Society believes is a vehicle "to stealthily merge the three North American nations." Beck started off the segment by saying: "Sam, I have to tell you, when I was growing up, the John Birch Society, I thought they were a bunch of nuts, however, you guys are starting to make more and more sense to me."

But more than anything else, Beck has taken to the unique brand of conspiracy-mongering endemic among '60s aficionados of the paranoid style such as Skousen. And like the paranoid stylists of old, each of Beck's conspiracies has at its heart either Marxism, socialism, communism, or some combination of the three. His "amoral supermen" are labor leaders, community activists, leftist groups from the '60s, and even a few long-since deceased presidents, all of whose "radical" views now find expression with President Obama.

  • On August 25, Beck put together an absurdly elaborate chart linking communists to Obama and the green jobs movement, suggesting that when Obama said he wanted to "fundamentally transform" the country, he was going to do so in a way that is "not unrecognizable to someone -- Venezuela -- like Hugo Chavez." What is happening, said Beck, is that "the radicals" are "filtering up" and being "scrubbed clean," and that's proof Obama hasn't "rejected Marxist principles."
  • On September 18, Beck claimed that only he -- and not the "mainstream 'fringe' media" -- can see "the big picture" represented by his "Tree of Revolution" (a chalkboard drawing of a tree), which connected ACORN and President Obama to Students for a Democratic Society and Woodrow Wilson.
  • On October 5, Beck attempted to explain how a speech delivered by Deepak Bhargava, the executive director of the Center for Community Change, who has no input into administration policy, indicates how Obama is "designing the crisis" that will change America's financial and foreign policy. The evidence he offered in support of the charge was that Bhargava and Obama both used the word "transform."
  • On October 28, Beck theorized that the United States, in order to pay its debts, will continue printing money and drive inflation up, at which point the country will drop the dollar as its currency and establish a new currency backed by land, which the government will seize through Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Explaining that this is exactly what happened in the Weimar Republic, Beck also prophesied that the Chinese would assist in undoing some of the "real rights that we had in our Constitution." Beck said that he hoped he was wrong about this, but "can't think of anything else" to explain what he sees happening.

Beck also frequently references the so-called Cloward-Piven strategy, which calls for an overloading of government-provided services to force the government into providing a "national income" for every citizen. Columbia University sociologists Richard Cloward and Frances Fox Piven made this argument in a 1966 article for The Nation, and ever since it has been a bugaboo for right-wing conspiracy buffs who see every movement to augment government services as a stealth attempt to implement the "strategy." On November 3, Beck implored his viewers to Google the Cloward-Piven strategy, explaining (accessed from the Nexis database): "This is important, because Cloward and Piven, the Cloward and Piven strategy, it's what they're doing. They're collapsing the system and replace it with a system of guaranteed annual income for all the workers! Workers of the world unite!"

Beck, like Skousen, also sounds the alarm on "world governments" and the "new order." On November 17, Beck hosted Damon Vickers -- a regular on the wildly conspiratorial Alex Jones Show -- and wholeheartedly embraced Vickers' theories on the coming emergence of a global currency, the "global world government," and a "new world order." On November 13, Beck claimed that Obama's invitation of labor leaders to the White House for a jobs summit was merely a cover, and their real purpose in meeting is "designing a global order." Beck's evidence for this claim was that SEIU president Andy Stern had visited the White House 22 times by that point, and that Stern once said "workers of the world unite." According to Beck: "They're not creating jobs, they're creating a new order. They are transforming our society." On October 27, Beck insisted that U.S. participation in the 2009 United Nations climate change conference in Copenhagen "could mean the end of U.S. sovereignty."

It's this sort of apocalyptic rhetoric that Hofstadter pegged as emblematic of the paranoid style -- the evil of the conspiracy isn't localized, it's widespread and persistent: "The paranoid spokesman sees the fate of conspiracy in apocalyptic terms -- he traffics in the birth and death of whole worlds, whole political orders, whole systems of human values. He is always manning the barricades of civilization." Beck frequently warns his listeners and viewers that "time is running out" and that it may be "too late." Beck also predicts the deaths of entire nations, value systems, and societies. On November 24, he issued this warning: "The final chapters, if we don't wake up, America, are being written about us right now."

Beck's America is one that is beset on all sides and constantly on the verge of collapse. On November 19, he proclaimed that health reform legislation would mean "the end of America, as you know it." On October 28, he said that high government spending will result in "a system that doesn't really look a lot like America as you know it." On May 15, he warned that if the press doesn't report on alleged collusion between NBC and the Obama administration, "it's the end of America as we know it" (accessed from Nexis).

As such, Beck frequently touts his own importance, casting himself the reluctant hero who sees the conspiracy where no one else can and warning America against the evil onslaught, most memorably when he said that his fight against health care reform was akin to preventing the 9-11 terrorist attacks. On that same show, Beck announced: "In the 1990s, I was on the radio warning people about Osama bin Laden, not because I was some super-smart genius. I just listened to the man's words. I really believed him." If it seems unlikely that Beck, who was still a morning zoo DJ in the '90s, was warning America about Osama bin Laden, that's because it is. Beck's own website features a recording of Beck's WABC debut in 1998, in which he reads a threatening statement from Osama bin Laden and responds by mocking the Al Qaeda leader's name before joking that his turban is too tight.

On October 5, Beck laid it on thick, telling people how proud he is that his show makes people feel "uncomfortable" because it's "good to ask honest questions that make you uncomfortable. It makes you think out of the box." He continued: "You can call me names. You can make fun of me -- whatever. I'm doing what I believe is right. I am doing a job as a private citizen right now. I'd love to have The New York Times, The Washington Post, a duo like Woodward and Bernstein, even if they would just go for the Pulitzer, even if they didn't believe it, just go for the Pulitzer, would you? I'd love for them to look into these things so, quite frankly, I didn't have to." Beck's message, in case it wasn't clear, is that he isn't just doing the job of the rest of the media -- he's doing it better than they can, and he's doing it on his own.

Beck's sense of self-importance can be unsettling at times, particularly when he muses on his own violent death as a consequence of standing up to the conspiracy. On September 8, Beck announced that the "biggest names, the most powerful people on the planet on the left" were lining up against him and asked his listeners to "keep me in your prayers, keep my staff in your prayers, for safety, for wisdom, please." Later in the show he got even more explicit: "You can try to put the lid on this group of people, but you will never silence us. You will never -- you can shoot me in the head, you can shoot the next guy in the head, but there will be 10 others that line up."

All the elements of Beck's paranoid ethos converged recently as he announced his intention to move beyond the realm of political commentary and take an activist role in the political process. During a rally at a Florida retirement community, Beck told his gathered audience that "what we're experiencing now is really a ticking time bomb that they designed about a hundred years ago at the beginning of the progressive movement," the purpose of which was to use both the Republican and Democratic parties to create a "socialist utopia." Beck's prescribed antidote was a plan to "bring us back to an America that our founders would understand" by developing "a 100-year plan" in the mold of the Chinese -- the rationale being: "Two can play at that game." Of course, at the center of the "100-year plan" is Beck -- or as he referred to himself, America's "Constitution czar." All the facets of the paranoid style are there -- an improbably wicked conspiracy to undermine the country perpetrated by the nation's powerful elite, a gauzy plan of action to take back America that emulates the tactics of the enemy and is crudely wrapped in the trappings of patriotism, and Beck offering himself as the nation's savior.

 Real-world consequences

An easy response to Beck's conspiratorial rhetoric is to dismiss it as a ploy -- he doesn't really believe it, he's just a showman, a self-described "rodeo clown" who is trying to sell books and advertising. And that very well may be true. The only person who really knows if Glenn Beck believes what he says is Glenn Beck.

But that misses the point. What matters is not what Beck believes, but the beliefs he inspires in his followers.

Hofstadter wrote of his own time: "In recent years we have seen angry minds at work mainly among extreme right-wingers, who have now demonstrated in the Goldwater movement how much political leverage can be got out of the animosities and passions of a small minority." Beck is hugely popular among the tea partiers, who themselves hold the attentions of more than one Republican member of Congress. Minnesota Republican Michele Bachmann has been their most vocal champion, and several Republican congressmen appeared at her November 5 tea party rally outside the Capitol, missing a vote on the Patriot Act as a result. Several protesters at Bachmann's rally carried signs comparing health care reform to the Holocaust, comparing the president to Mao Zedong and other communist bête-noirs, and questioning the president's citizenship.

Such hateful expressions are self-disqualifying and offensive. They also reflect a desire among the tea partiers that is unrealistic and unattainable -- preventing Barack Obama from exercising any authority as president, to the point of removing him from office. By pandering to the Beck-inspired tea party ethos, Bachmann and her congressional colleagues are only strengthening the delusion. Meanwhile, as Beck and his cohorts spin their wild conspiracy theories, the self-identified Republicans in the country move themselves more and more to the paranoid fringe. After months of Beck bashing ACORN and casting doubt on the legitimacy of Obama's election, polling shows that more than half of the nation's Republicans believe (in complete absence of evidence) that ACORN stole the 2008 election for Obama.

Beyond the political realm, Beck's promulgation of conspiracy theories about President Obama and the cataclysmic evils of "big government" has a more frightening effect. A recently released report by the Anti-Defamation League noted the media's role in the rise of anti-government anger among "people who believe that the Obama administration is illegitimate or even fascistic." They specifically chide Beck for "[going] so far as to make comparisons between Hitler and Obama and to promote the idea that the president is dangerous." The ADL concludes that Beck's rhetoric plays "an important role in drawing people further out of the mainstream, making them more receptive to the more extreme notions and conspiracy theories."

On the far edge of the extreme right is the so-called militia movement, which rose and fell during the Clinton presidency and is now, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, enjoying a resurgence fueled by the faltering economy and the election of the first black president. The movement is characterized by extreme anti-government conspiracy theories which, the SPLC notes, have been promulgated by media figures like Beck: "Fox News host Glenn Beck, who has called Obama a fascist, a Nazi and a Marxist, even re-floated militia conspiracy theories of the 1990s alleging a secret network of government-run concentration camps."

 The divide

Hofstadter wrote that the paranoid style is a "state of mind," not an ideology, and can hardly be considered an exclusive characteristic of the right. The left-wing also has its conspiratorial cranks who are as stubborn in their beliefs as they are ill-informed. However, this style and the attendant sense of victimization it engenders have become so tightly woven into the fabric of mainstream conservatism as to make the two near-indistinguishable. As the Washington Monthly's Steve Benen wrote, "[T]here's a clear and impermeable line between the progressive mainstream and the left fringe. The line between the Republican Party/conservative movement and the far-right fringe barely exists."

Consider the recent special election in NY-23, in which conservative candidate Doug Hoffman, after receiving the endorsements of several national-level Republicans and conservatives, forced the moderate GOP candidate out of the race and eventually lost, handing the traditionally Republican district over to the Democrats. Hoffman originally conceded the race to Democrat Bill Owens, but after some prodding from Beck, "un-conceded" -- after Owens had already been sworn in. His reasoning was that "ACORN, the unions and the Democratic Party" tampered with the results to deny him victory.

Sarah Palin, one of the national conservative stars who made Hoffman's candidacy possible, alleges in her new book that ever since she was tapped to be Sen. John McCain's running mate, she has been the victim of a conspiracy perpetrated in equal parts by the media, the McCain campaign, and the Democratic Party, all with the singular goal of trashing her and her family. In Congress, several prominent Republicans have called for an investigation into whether the Council on American-Islamic Relations has infiltrated key national security committees with intern "spies." Rush Limbaugh, the on-again, off-again head of the GOP, has alleged that the president personally conspired to deny him ownership of the St. Louis Rams. Fox News' Sean Hannity still peddles the long-since discredited theory that Obama's memoir, Dreams from My Father, was ghost-written by Bill Ayers. The number of instances of rank conspiracy-mongering from the right in Obama's first year alone is staggering.

Even Obama's recent trip to Asia, during which he shook hands with and bowed to the Japanese emperor, was taken as an indication of nefarious intent. Limbaugh theorized that it conveyed Obama's desire to one day be a monarch himself. There's an argument to be made that Obama's bow was a minor diplomatic snafu, but, as Hofstadter wrote, "if for every error and every act of incompetence one can substitute an act of treason, many points of fascinating interpretation are open to the paranoid imagination."

It's that "paranoid imagination" that is consuming conservatism in America, transforming it into a movement defined by its eccentricities. And the most colorful "paranoid imagination" belongs to Beck, who is emerging as the most prominent voice of the movement, and leading his followers further and further down the rabbit hole.

Hofstadter won the Pulitzer Prize in 1964 for his book Anti-Intellectualism in American Life.

Though it obviously doesn't address what's been going on in the last half century it does show the current situation really isn't new but is just the latest edition of a pitched battle that's been fought since the inception of this country.

It should be required reading for anyone who wants a deeper understanding of the roots of Palin, Beck et al.

If this is not the proverbial proof that Glenn Beck has completely lost it, I do not know what else is!!

This whole situation with Glenn reminds me of the scene in Ace Ventura Pet Detective after Ace was in 'Ray Finkles' room (or was it in the storage room at the mental hospital?) and said "Phew... Obsessed much!"

Great, illuminating article, Simon Maloy. Thank you.

And here I thought Glenn Beck was just using pschotropic drugs ;-) Oh and wow, the idea that Beck compares himself to John Forbes Nash is extremely telling in so many ways.

Scared, paranoid reactionaries aren't pretty to watch, but watch them we must. As much as I loathe all the Glenn Beck articles here, I do see the need to document his insanity.

It makes me wonder if the more moderate conservative voices see what's happening with this self marginalization in real time, or if they're just not courageous enough to stand up to the loonies, even while their existence is doomed because of demographics and the self evident need for progress?

Beck and Limbaugh would falter fast in a conversation with anyone on Obama's administration. These idiots are so far from truth and reality it isn't funny. That's why Beck only invites confederate friends and demigods on the show.
Beck and Limbaugh are afraid to converse with someone on the other end of the Spectrum.
Apparently they have no confidence in their wicked views and message.
The reason why Obama won't sit down with these knuckleheads is simple; they have shown themselves to be bias and immature.
Most of what they talk about over the airwaves is nonsense and stupid and easy to debunk, but they don't welcome opposing views to debate the issues, they only want people to co-sign their madness.

What "facts" are you refering to? The numbers dont lie, the nation is polorized. I listen to the right wing nutz and the left wing nutz. There all nutz. I sort though the BS do my own fact checking and make my own conclusions. If everyone did that McCain and Obama probably wouldnt have been the canidates. Anyway, the Becks and the Obermans of the country have strong biases and you obviously have yours. I love your knee-jerk reaction that Im "caught in Beck's conspiracy theory".That tells me alot about you. Personally I dont think we had much of a choice last election but I think we elected sparkle over substance. Unlike some (getting fewer by the day mind you), Im not going to blindly support incompetence on either side. Its blindingly obvious he was not ready for this job. Most people see this so Im in the majority here. I dont need Beck to tell me this, its in plain site. Hell, hes kind off annoying and hard to watch anyway.

Keep drinking the koolaid close minded ones.

How many people had to leave the white house because of Beck's lies? I like the broad stroke "lies"... exactly what LIES? name them. Beck sights sources, audio, video and/or text, and the Obama administration has not responded to any of them... oh wait, there were a few people that had to leave in the dark of the night

if anyone is a knucklehead it's the usual cast of political hacks on both sides of the aisle who make the talk show rounds... i don't blame beck or limbaugh for not wasting time with clowns from the opposition... but i seriously doubt either would pass up the chance to clean the clock's of a cabinet member and certainly the president himself...

Really. Beck or Limbaugh would "clean the clock's [sic]" of a Cabinet member or the president. The Cabinet that's stuffed with some of the smartest people in the world. The president who's not only a Harvard grad, but was editor of the Harvard Law Review, a position generally filled by the student considered the best and brightest of his class. Beck and Limbaugh would clean their clocks. These are the people that you think a one-semester college dropout or a drug-addicted sociopath would have a good showing against. You're kind of reality-challenged, I think.

They don't 'waste time' with the opposition because they're cowards. Limbaugh has said the opposition can't beat him on ideas - but when was the last time Limbaugh actually debated anybody from the Left? Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, Ed Schultz, Joe Lyles...any of them would rip Beck or Limbaugh limb-from-limb in a debate.

Aahhhhh, Politico, the once intellectual juggernaut of serious political discussion---missing, yes, missing their once great opportunity to illuminate the mysteries of capital hill. Instead, they have become so like the others-- feasting--yes, feasting on Beck's tea party misery.

So when they “Drudge” up long forgotten stories about Monica and Bill and Brett replacing Britt, just know they have learned from Beck that there’s big money in throwing red meat to “Redstates” in dem deh hills.

Thank you for the plug for "The Paranoid Style" I actually bought the book earlier this year after reading Thomas Frank's "The Wrecking Crew". I haven't gotten to it yet, but it is on my nightstand. It is very rare that such a fringe element has had this much power and easy access to media. Glenn Beck is dangerous and someday, someone will get hurt. Let us hope Glenn falls from power before that happens, but please keep up the watchdog work, MMFA, so we can keep an eye on him. We need to be prepared. By the way, I am still planning on going to his "The Plan" unveiling in August.

Thank You for putting these two books "out here"!! I've got a Gift Cert for Amazon & was trying to decide what to get. "Wrecking Crew is on my wish list, (along with about 50 other books), and being physically challenged, and often house-bound for weeks at a time, I tend to read, a LOT!! ;) "The Paranoid Style" will be my second book. I JUST finished "Republican Gamorrah" and have actually had nightmares!! I dream a LOT-very visual dreams, and have certainly had some doozies. Despite the fact that Max Blumenthal finished the book before Beck began his extremely outlandish conspiracy theories and likely because I literally HAVE to watch Beck on my late-shift dialysis days, (as a patient in the only unit transport will take me to, in a VERY conservative area), that psychotic goon has weaseled his way into some of my worst nightmares. My kids say I should write my OWN book... lol ;) I highly recommend "Gamorrah" for the background of this extremist movement-which SHOULD scare the Hell out of ALL of us!! I think I may just paint this weekend; probably something Peaceful and Beautiful, (like our coming snowstorm). Perhaps it will wipe some of the smelly filth and ugliness of these people....?

It's not so much Beck that is shocking. What's shocking is how so many fall for this huckster and the garbled henny penny sky is falling stuff that has been around forever.
If not Beck, then someone else would be the Elmer Gantry for the gullible and ignorant who readily drink from the paranoia kool aid.
What I find so funny is hearing it from average people, earnestly spewing the silliness of 45 year old nonsense that was even too crazy for the far right of that era. But, obviously is not too far fetched for today.

It's this comment; "Sam, I have to tell you, when I was growing up, the John Birch Society, I thought they were a bunch of nuts, however, you guys are starting to make more and more sense to me." that proves that Beck is getting crazier and crazier.
It's very frightening to me, though, that he has so many people that believe what he says when he can't produce any more evidence than two people using the same word. Really? This is proof of some huge conspiracy against America? I've used the word transform as well, does that mean that I'm affecting policy in the Obama administration?

The imminent demise or collapse of our country has been standard extreme right doom-shaped rhetoric for decades. Right-wing extremists occupy a doom-shaped environment which only they claim to understand.

I provide some examples below for historical context:

      (1) Salt Lake City Deseret News, 12/11/61 article “Reds Gaining Rapidly, Medic Claims” quotes Fred Schwarz [Christian Anti-Communism Crusade] as stating: “At the present rate of progress, communism will have conquered us in 10 years.”

      (2) Pedro A. del Valle an omnipresent figure in extreme right circles from the 1940's-1960's wrote a 12/19/49 letter to Conde McGinley (editor of anti-semitic Common Sense newspaper):

“If the Truman welfare state triumphs we shall lose our republic and emerge a very sad socialist oligarchy which will shortly be overthrown by a communist dictatorship.”

      (3) Later, the January 1955 newsletter [Task Force] of Del Valle's organization, Defenders of the American Constitution (DAC), observed:

"In January 1955, Task Force revealed conclusive proof of the conspirators’ master plan for world domination in the form of a map. DAC vice president Colonel Eugene Pomeroy said that on a 1954 trip to London he had been given the map from a brave British woman patriot who had infiltrated the September 1952 London conference of the World Association of Parliamentarians for World Government (also known as the United World Federalists). The map, which divided up the world into a series of zones and regions with longitude and latitude lines duly noted, was the World Parliamentarians attempt to envision a rationally organized globe and not one split along preexisting national political lines.

The DAC, however, saw the map as the blueprint for One World domination that would commence once the UN began changing its Charter. The map split the U.S. into four zones, leading Pomeroy to warn that 'a Mau Mau Chief' could rule the South 'as Commissar' while the states from 'the Atlantic to the Rockies quite likely would be under the dictatorship of Huk Filipinos while the Pacific Coast states in all likelihood could expect a Red Chinese as their overlord.' Because the conspirators desired the standard of living throughout the world to be uniform, they further planned to reduce the average American to 'somewhere on a level of an Australian Bushman, and practically all American surplus production would be exported.' The One World economy would be built on 'a deforested desert of America'. "

"The blueprint for One World will not tolerate control of immigration. The United States can expect that its West Coast will be inundated by hordes of Red Chinese coolies. The East and the rest of the country can expect to be overrun by millions from the Levant, India, Malaya, East Indies, Africa. The American branch of the white race will be another 'lost race' and would take its place in history along with the Aztecs.

Of course to operate this global scheme, force, overwhelming force, is essential. This has been foreseen and every national unit as now existing must contribute recruits for an International Police. We can look forward to being policed by Turks, Hindus, African Tribesmen and Red Chinese distributed throughout the four regions."

Pomeroy concluded his article with the prediction that “by 1960, the United States as we know it, Constitution and all, will disappear from the Earth.”

      (4) Christian Anti-Communism Crusade, Strategies and Tactics For World Conquest, 1960

“In 1953 Mao-Tse-Tung and Joseph Stalin according to reliable reports, in their last conference, expressed the belief that it would take two 5-year plans to consolidate their strength in the Far East and two more 5-year plans to encircle and degenerate the United States, resulting in their surrender without an Atomic Hydrogen War, making the tentative date for World Conquest about the year 1973.”

      (5) 7/19/57 letter from Harry Everingham of We, The People! To J. Edgar Hoover:

“Recently Richard Arens, Director of the Un-American Activities Committee and General Wedemeyer have both been quoted as saying that we have scarely five years more before the communists take over the U.S. unless we can get the American people awakened and actively resisting this threat…Any current quote that you can give us of a startling nature will be deeply appreciated.”

      (6) FBI 7/26/58 memo from file on Rev. Wesley Swift:

“Bufiles reflect Swift has been prophesying a Russian invasion of the United States since 1948.”

      (7) From Church League of America newsletter, News and Views, 2/5/44, p3 = “Smear Tactics Used To Destroy Opposition”

“Not in the memory of man has there been so much political bitterness in this county as is now coming to the boiling point after several years of intensive flame fanning. It comes in the main from militant aggressiveness of new forces that have, during the last few years, become dominant and arrogant. This condition is intensified by the approaching election in which two ideologies are clashing head-on in an effort to gain control of the American way of life.”

“On the one hand we have those who believe in Constitutional traditions that decentralize the power of government – dividing it into three balanced departments and leaving State’s rights as a further check against centralized autocratic supremacy.”
“Against this we have the new political and economic philosophy – some call it ‘New Deal’- in which an attempt is being made to centralize Federal power under the Executive Branch of government and make it all powerful. This is the very danger against which all our earlier statesmen warned. It is the open road to political tyranny—for the simple reason that it removes the only restraints that guard the liberties of the ‘common man’. The issue here does not concern an individual – it deals with a principles – a principle that is vital to the preservation of our American way of life.”

Pg 4: “It is out of the welter of this growing conflict and the fight these new forces are making to gain and keep control that the ‘smear’ technique of fighting has been polished and perfected. Those individuals who stand out as any consequential opposition to the ‘new order’ forces are sprayed mercilessly with invective, innuendo and falsehood, by those now in the saddle, in an effort to frighten them into silence and acquiescence.”

      (8) “The Last Chance To Save Our Country” by C.C. Crow in the 2/15/44 issue of “Crow’s Pacific Coast Lumber Digest”

“It is entirely possible that the coming election may be the last free one that the United States of America will see. Certainly, if there are to be four more years of blind spending and the further broadening of a deficit which already has us on the very brink of financial disaster, will that not mean ruination for every man, woman and child within our borders, carrying down banks, life insurance companies, securities of all kinds and result in the eventual confiscation of all private property…The mob will even ake the capital assets of industry and individuals. Nothing will be safe and the goal of Communism will have been reached. There will be no more free elecetions, no congress, and no courts of justice, as we formerly knew them. Our great factories will be in control of such men as Earl Browder, Harry Bridges, Leon Henderson and John Lewis…When this day arrives it is not impossible that Mrs. Roosevelt will be traveling around the country compelling white peple to do washing for negroes so as to eliminate all traces of racial inequality…Roosevelt will stoop to anything this year to get re-elected. We are on the very threshold of Communism. Whether we are dragged through for a return to paganism and Christianity’s greatest setback of all time depends entirely upon the individual effort that is put into this, our last chance, by patriotic citizens who still revere the Stars and Stripes.”

      (9) AP report in 6/20/44 Chicago Tribune, page 6, “Senator Warns of Dictatorship By Reds in U.S." quotes Sen. James Eastland:

“We are much closer to a dictatorship by the Communist-CIO than the people of this country realize.” Eastland described Sidney Hillman as “just as much a Communist as Stalin himself.” Eastland opposed a $500,000 appropriation for creation of the FEPC (Fair Employment Practices Commission) and he said that Congressional approval would mean that “we no longer have a constitutional government but a dictatorship in name and in fact.”

      (10) John Birch Society speaker, David Gumaer, in Norfolk VA 12/11/70:

Gumaer quoted in Norfolk VA newspaper as stating that “a dictatorship will be in control of the United States by 1972.”
He is then quoted as predicting:

“Rioting will start on campuses and ghettoes. Communications will be cut off and the stock market will go broke. The people will call for law and order in the streets, Martial law will be declared and we will have a dictatorship. The wave of assassinations and kidnappings will begin before that.” Furthermore: “The Conspiracy is ahead of schedule. By 1973 it will take over unless we can expose the full scope of it before then.”

      (11) John Birch Society speaker David Gumaer, 2/22/71 Nevada State Journal

Gumaer “blew into the city room of this newspaper Sunday night and announced, among other things, that the Communist ‘takeover of the United States will occur by 1973.’”

      (12) John Birch Society National Council member Revilo Oliver, 2/12/64 Washington Post:

Revilo Oliver article on JFK assassination proposed that JFK was killed because he was falling behind in the Communist timetable for takeover of the U.S. Oliver claimed that “some competent observers” had concluded that the Communists had set 1963 as the date for the “effective capture of the United States” and JFK had fallen behind.

      (13) John Birch Society National Council member Tom Anderson as reported in 9/23/63 Chicago Sun Times article, “Group Warned Russians Will Get U.S. By ‘73” reports that at speech to 9th National Constitution Day convention sponsored by We, The People, Anderson “predicted that the Soviet Union will takeover the United States by 1973.”.

      (14) John Birch Society Coordinator, Santa Barbara CA, 1961:

Chet Merriam, JBS Coordinator for Santa Barbara area “told the assembled students that within one year Mexico would be in Communist hands, and that in two years the U.S. would be under the domination of the Kremlin. Furthermore, he declared two of California’s highest officials were pro-Communist and the University of California was heavily infiltrated. In addition, Merriam told Arnold that the Birchers had an underground organization, fully equipped, prepared for any emergency, and headed by former intelligence officers."

      (15) John Birch Society member Betty J. Travnick, letter to editor, Stockton CA Record, 10/16/70:

“A segment of black, brown and white trash is joining together which do not represent that vast decent majority of the Negro, Mexican and white citizens. They represent only one-half of one percent of the ones who have vowed to overthrow the U.S. government by 1972.”

      (16) John Birch Society Coordinator, retired Brig. Gen. William L. Lee, as reported in Clovis NM News-Journal, 6/2/61

Texas-New Mexico JBS Coordinator (Brig. Gen. William L. Lee) speech at Hotel Clovis referred to “coming Communist domination of the United States”. “He predicted by the end of this year the Philippine Islands will turn to Communism…” Lee observed that Communists control Eastern Europe and “They could takeover Western Europe by telephone if they wished.”

      Lee lamented:

"I used to worry about my grandchildren coming under Communism but now I worry about myself and I’m only 58." Lee described both the State Department and CIA as “Communist” and “traitor” controlled.

Lee: “Some of you people here may be living like the people in Red China before long. You’ll be put in compounds with your wives and children sent to separate compounds.”

“The recent Cuban invasion was bungled on purpose by the CIA which did not notify the Cuban patriots of the invasion attempt but did notify Castro, Lee said”

Lee: “The State Dept and the CIA have had traitors in them as far back as World War I and those same traitors are still there. They put Castro into Cuba. And Christian Herter is the biggest traitor of them all.”

      (17) John Birch Society member Gary Allen, 1972 book, None Dare Call It Conspiracy:

“Remember, seeds planted in 1972 will pay off not only in this year, but in 1974 and 1976. If we do not build a large counter-revolutionary base in 1972, the ball game will be lost by 1976.”

      (18) Robert H. Williams 1950 booklet, Know Your Enemy – page 34

“If Lehman’s Crusade for Freedom is not broken up it could sweep the world like a hurricane, adding the final triumph of the world revolution, through a ‘United Nations world government’, a dictatorship by a handful of men responsible to no one. This Crusade is promoting the naïve, power-minded Eisenhower, who evidently is marked to become the first dictator, or figurehead.”

Robert H. Williams 1950 booklet, Know Your Enemy – page 51

“A few months ago I had reason to believe that the Communist-Zionist combine inside our borders planned violent seizure of power within two years. The method would not be new: a score or a hundred ot the nation’s leading anti-Communists, including perhaps some governors, senators, generals and influential commentators, would be killed in a single night. The revolutionaries would tell the President they had saved him and the nation from a fascist plot to establish a military dictatorship’ they would declare an emergency in the name of the President, take over the radio networks, and put on an endless barrage of propaganda to make the public believe they had saved the President and ‘democracy’ from the non-existent plot.”

      (19) Robert H. Williams, 1951 flyer entitled “Red Plan For Seizing”

“The campaign for 1952 is not just routine; it is going to be the last one if we do not win. The enemy is playing for big stakes; win all or lose all, next year. It may well be that he will have Communist agents create hysteria before the conventions, by sabotaging some of our cities…They will then have Dictator Eisenhower transfer the Civil Defense Agency to the Marxist Mrs. Anna Rosenberg, Assistant Secretary of Defense in charge of manpower. She will make the dangerously infiltrated agency in to a secret police bypassing FBI and courts, remove any police chief who protests, clamp censorship on press and radio, and arrest anti-Communist leaders as ‘anti-Semitic’ and disrupting the ‘war effort’. You will not be able to communicate with your Congressman…Congress will be so smeared and harassed that it will be completely futile. The Communist revolution will then be complete, all but the mopping up. Red revolutions are won by pushing Red Jewish agents and projects forward, then condemning any who oppose them as anti-Semitic.”

      (20) Robert H. Williams, 2/24/51 letter to editor, Santa Ana CA Register:

“I agree with Senator Joseph McCarthy that if Communist progress is not slowed down, millions of Americans will be in slave labor camps within five years.”

“As of today there is about a fifty-fifty chance that Adlai Stevenson will be elected President. If Stevenson wins we must expect a Communist type dictatorship or a bloody civil war or both.”

      (21) Robert Mathews, Arizona Sons of Liberty, 1972 flyer captioned: “Patriots To Arms For The Second Call To Freedom”:

“The time is critical. We will retain our freedom, only if you as an individual act now. For the Final battle is not far away.”

      (22) Robert Mathews, from 1973 Arizona Sons of Liberty flyer captioned “General Notes For The Patriot Soldier”:

“This year and next are probably going to be the most critical years in our nation’s history. Everything is going fine for the masterminds of the Conspiracy, and they have only a few more steps before their conquest of the entire world is final. The last few steps that the masterminds plan to enact involve a depression, a famine, and some type of world-wide political shake-up with one of the end results being occupation of this once grand land by forces of the United Nations…Those who are in control of the Conspiracy plan to bring utter desolation and chaos to the cities of America, so that the people will cry for security and order and the Federal Government and the United Nations will be more than happy to give them security and order---dictatorship style.”

      (23) Billy James Hargis, 6/18/65 article entitled “The Most Terrifying Report I’ve Ever Read”:

“An Air Force contract (No. AF 49 (638-1411) dated April 1965 with North American Aviation, Inc. has been called to my attention. It contains a diabolical projected plan to disarm the United States and abolish our sovereignty by 1976. This plan is a self-styled scenario of gradual surrender to world government with Communist Russia, going as far as the listing of the wars that are to be fought between now and 1976, the world leaders to be assassinated, the governments to be overthrown, and listing the actual year for each event. For instance, this ‘projected’ blueprint of surrender says that (1) the communist dictators of China will commit suicide in 1965; (2) Castro will be denied aid by Russia in 1965 and his government overthrown with the apparent approval of Russia in 1966; (3) Berlin will be ‘internationalized’ in 1965; (4) a nuclear-free zone will be set up in Central Europe in 1965; (5) the U.S. and the Soviet Union will publicly agree for destruction of obsolete bomber aircraft in 1965 and the ‘destruction of bombers completed’ by 1966; (6) Communist China will be admitted to the United Nations early in 1966; (7) and in 1976 a ‘completion of execution of final phase disarmament treaty’…Christians and Constitution-loving Americans must oppose this Satanic plan with the same patriotic zeal we opposed Hitler.

This plan raises serious questions: (1) are the liberals and internationalist minded politicians that are a majority influence in both political parties, mere ACTORS in a world DRAMA that will ultimately mean the capitulation of the United States, and if so, who is the script writer for this hellish and traitorous sell-out?

Thanks for this illuminating article. Tarryl Clark has an editorial in the Star Tribune in which she tries to point out the fact that Bachmann is not a populist. It appears that Bachmann suffers from the type of paranoia described in your article. Ms. Clark uses Bachmann's vote against financial reform to illustrate this. She includes all of the benefits to citizens of the legislation, but if the comments are any indication, her supporters don't care about protecting themselves from the financiers as long as Bachmann is re-elected to Congress. After reading your article, I can see why the Fuchs Noose viewers reject any/all attempts to educate them about the issues: they have been infected by the paranoia virus which prevents logical thought processes.

This was a very interesting article and very well researched. Glen Beck is considered a polarizing figure, I think all people would agree on that. Some hate him, some love him. Here's what I would like to know... His personality and delivery can be criticized. That's certainly valid. However, I try to see all sides of the story and I must say, I think he has opened a lot of people's eyes to different ideas that no one else speaks of. Is it because he's crazy? Is it because the other media is also biased like Fox? It's probably both.

The point is, aside from the conspiracy theories about Obama and "the left"... I have made an effort to research the various topics that are brought up about the role of government, the economy, job creation etc... I know the point of the column is that the implied ignorant masses will be swayed by his every last word. To some extent, that is true. However, being a person who questions everything for myself, I must tell you, there are valid points of concern. For example, the economy (deficit, its role, the Fed etc.) is seriously out of control and it should not be complacently accepted that it's okay if Obama does it, but not when it was Bush. This type of logic makes no sense. The real argument here should not be over personality types... it should be over the theoretical and practical applications of government, economy, social issues etc... just my opinion.

Those claims are all code for racism. Canada has socialized medicine and it's popular with 80% of the population. The govt. (yes, the govt. to fear?) knows when you turn 65 yrs. At that time you get a letter telling you that the govt. will cover the cost of ALL your prescription drugs (except for the dispensing fee $6 - $15 per prescription).

The most telling thing about the wild paranoid fantasies these people have is how little respect they have for America. The Constitution has survived war, civil war, civil disobedience and civil unrest and has almost always become stronger for it, yet these people have no faith or confidence in it. The President will authorize these death factories or whatever, Congress will blithely go along with it (while unable to pass anything of importance), the Supreme Court will sanction it and the press will ignore it. The Repubicans are the very best at covering things up, yet they couldn't hide a burglary, Iran-Contra , torture or any of their many affairs. The Democrats couldn't cover up Monica Lewinsky or anything else, yet we have to be afraid. Very afraid. What a joke.

The simple truth is that it's easier to lead when one has an enemy. Hitler, Mao, Stalin, heck even GW (invading Iraq) created enemies to control the dialog.

I can remember how the Ayatollah Khomeini blamed his nation's plight on the US – although he wasn’t incorrect, the blame game never fixes anything.

They never have a workable plan. Creating an enemy allows them to shift the focus away from fixing anything.

Somehow, we all keep falling for it.

The 'useful idiots' are out in full force with this playful article. Maybe if they utilized this abundant energy to actually investigate who runs the country, we'd all be better off. For all the self-professed intellectuals out there in Media Matters land, please do me a favor and read up on the creation of the CFR and the privatized Federal Reserve. I'm sure John D. Rockefeller, Paul Warburg, Colonel House, Nelson Aldrich and the rest of the robber barons had our best interests in mind, when they concocted this system of oppression close to a 100 years ago.

people are getting confused what liberal & conservative mean's.
maybe they should read the book's from the age of enlightment period after the french revolution, John Locke's version of liberal
would make a conservative feel more liberal and a liberal feel more conservative. but please if you ever add an ism after a liberal or a conservative you should watch the movie Ferris Buehler's Day off. Matthew Broderick's character was right and not wrong about the left. nor left of the right to be left.

A normal person would examine their apparently faulty premise (that Soros was funding this site) when they see data (asking for donations) that does not support the premise. You may or may not be paranoid. What is evident is that you are not rational.

if you want to operate under the technicality that soros has never, ever given money directly to media matters, while his other orgs such as moveon have, that's fine... why he doesn't i don't know and if he did i wouldn't care... i'm just sorry the faulty premise of my innocuous comment has rendered the joke ineffective for your reading experience, and i apologize most humbly and profusely...

In a few years you loony leftists / MMFA will awaken one day, scratch your heads, and say to your significant other something “like” this: Dang, what has happened to America? Employment is down to 60% and those that do work have to give 75% of what they make to those that don’t. We can hardly make it anymore now that our electric bill is $1,000.00 a month, gas is $15 a gallon, and food in the markets is 5X what it was in 2009 because of the governments requirement that half of crops must be used for ethanol.

I wish we could go see a doctor for your cancer dear but as you know the waiting list is over a year. But what's the point, last time we were lucky enough to actually see a Dr he only gave you pain pills anyways. And isn’t it a bummer, of those that have survived so far, our kids and grandkids owe $200,000.00 each against our $50 Trillion of national debt. Speaking of our kids, I sure miss Tommy, Susie, and their kids since we lost the whole family in that Islamic nuclear terrorist attack last March in Dallas, don’t you dear? What a shame they were cut down so young. Well dear, it could be worse. We are only down to seventh place in our economy. It’s a downer that North Korea and Iran are now wealthier then us though.

Nonetheless, I do feel fortunate dear. We sure are proud we elected the first half-black president into office back in 2008. And we know how important skin color is as opposed to substance, huh sweetie?

Goodnight dear; lets hope we aren’t robbed and you aren’t raped again tonight since we can’t have any weapons to defend ourselves (remember last week Obama outlawed all water buckets since they cause more accidental deaths than guns).

Oh, I almost forgot, we forgot to pray! Lets bow our heads: “Our Heavenly President Obama, we thank you for your five terms as president and are so grateful you were able to get the unlimited terms in office for a democrat passed through Congress. Thank you for allowing us to report in daily to the folks at ACORN so we are required to be community organizers after we work 12 hours a day at our government job as dog catchers to get by. Thank you, oh Obama, for dismantling all our nuclear weapons and eliminating 85% of our military. And, dear Obama, we are so proud of you finally helping your brother in Africa who was living on less then $20 a year in 2009 in a 9 x 9 hut by giving him a whole $100.00 – enough for five years! Your kindness is unlimited. We say these things in the name of Barrack Hussein Obama, All Hail Allah.

You know what's really ironic about clowns like you? You claim to love America, you claim to believe that this is the best, most powerful, most efficacious nation in the history of mankind. You soil my flag, the flag that me and men like me actually planted on foriegn soil and defended, with the cheap, bloodless rhetoric of fear and cowardice. And then you claim that we'll do socialized medicine less effectively than do the Canadians, the Swiss, the Brits and the French. See, those folks live longer, are sick less, and love their healthcare systems. If we're really the greatest nation on earth, wouldn't that mean that we'll do medicine, socialized or not, better than anyone? Cuz, right now, our babies die more often, we live shorter, more brutish lives, and we're quite a bit less happy with our healthcare than any other industrialized nation on earth.
Can you explain that to me? Cuz I'm just a dumb veteran with heavy metal poisoning from depleted uranium exposure and a persistent case of PTSD that has me reaching for a weapon at the most inappropriate times. I'd really love it if you could tell me why high infant mortality rates and a shortened lifespan and incredible incidence of chronic illness are to be desired and defended at all costs, even if that cost is the ever-expanding premiums offered by that intrepid defender of virtue, the healthcare industry.

Not that facts and data would ever persuade a liberal to change his mind, but just in case: 1) The Countries who have socialized health care do not "love their healthcare system". Unless you somehow spin waiting and being denied attention to their ills as appreciative. In fact, those who can afford it come to the good ole USA to get treatment. Look it up. 2). Polls prove most Americans like our current healthcare system and do NOT want it changed to Obama care. In fact over 60% are fine with what we have. 3). You: "I'd really love it if you could tell me why high infant mortality rates and a shortened lifespan and incredible incidence of chronic illness are to be desired and defended at all costs, even if that cost is the ever-expanding premiums offered by that intrepid defender of virtue, the healthcare industry." My answer: Because what you say in your post is garbage. It is not true.

And finally, if you are a veteran, thanks for your service. I also served in VN, well before PTSD was invented. Somehow I and 100's of thousands of other VN vets got past the PTSD or whatever it is called. BTW: What do you think about the current push for Pre TSD?

I didn't see any facts with which you tried to persuade me to change my mind. I saw a lot of opinion, including that incredibly stupid gem about PTSD.
How's about I show you how it's done:

Infant Mortality Rate: The US ranks 30th out of 31 industrialized nations.

Life Expectancy: US ranks 50th, behind every other industrialized nation.
Overall Health: The US ranks number 1 in health expenditures, but ranked 24th in overall health, WAY behind all of the nations with so-called socialized medicine.

As for health system customer satisfaction, boy howdy, you're way off base. First, you conflated HCR opinion polls with customer satisfaction - you're stupid. Then you asserted that 60% of Americans don't want HCR, which is so far wrong that, you're stupid. Then you ignored the dozens and dozens of polls that have proved Americans wanted a public option, want health care reform, and they want it right now. You're stupid.

In case the them eluded you, you being stupid, and all, I'm not trying to change your mind. The overwhelming evidence of the health care industry's continuous and enduring perfidy, the decades of proof that our health care system is broken, the obnoxious disdain you have for facts and logic, all of these conspire to convince me that you're stupid. Changing your mind isn't possible. You didn't use it to arrive at your ridiculous conclusions.

Well, there's really no point in engaging a dialogue with someone to whom facts are anathema. He's not interested in fairness, decency or what's best for this country. He just wants to win points for his outmoded, unpopular, inhuman ideological schema. So calling him stupid, while surely beyond the pale in most frames of civil debate, was really, really satisfying on a personal level, and will probably prove just as effective in engaging his intellect as the slew of facts I provided that he'll ignore when he composes his stupid response.
So, you're welcome, and it was my pleasure.

My goodness. Several posts from the Left. Lets all gather around and sing Kum-by-ya, shall we? Or, I could post my own reference data that disputes nestea’s "data". But debating a leftist is pointless. I've tried countless times but you people just don't have normal brain functions. What say you focus on your "persistent case of PTSD that has me reaching for a weapon at the most inappropriate times" wimp.

Sorry, this is a bogus article, written by an Obama rump swab. Beck makes more sense than any other public speaker, or politician. Paranoid? Thats not proven in the opinion piece above. Here, try this on for size: Beck represents the MAJORITY in this country, as the independents are moving back to the right, and leaving the party trying to bankrupt the nation. Paranoid? Hardly. Absurdly correct? Probably.

I grew up and became acutely aware of politics in the late 1950s and 1960s when the John Birch Society became rampant. Sensibility forced this radical and paranoid political group into the shadows. I cannot believe they are back! At the time I was not fond of William F. Buckley, that sensible and articulate conservative. But now Oh how I wish he was here!!

This article is an opinion piece. A liberal opinion, not very accurate, but well written nonetheless. It has all the liberal minded people who tune into this site for backslapping, highfiving each other. Problem is its a minority opinion.(Nationally speaking) Read that and worry people, because the independent voters are moving back to the right.
I didn't notice any mention of the ratings for Mr Beck's show? Anyone? Thats right. Now how about the ratings for the terribly left slanted "news" stations? ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC....tanking. Address the facts in your foaming responses please (knowing full well this is impossible.)
