Media Matters for America -- a progressive, Washington, D.C-based, nonprofit research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media -- seeks an Assistant Editor. The Assistant Editor will work with the Editorial Department to provide critical style and content editing for every department at Media Matters.
Editing and Fact-Checking: The Assistant Editor provides critical style and content editing for every department at Media Matters, including but not limited to research items and reports for the MMfA website, press releases, promotional and donor materials, and member communication. Accordingly, this role ensures that pieces are readable and accessible to a broad audience, factual and well-sourced, grammatically correct, timely, and that they contribute to MMfA’s mission.
Monitoring the Media Landscape: The Assistant Editor is responsible for staying up-to-date and informed on relevant media narratives and major stories of the day by tracking internal emails, reading news websites and blogs as well as all MMfA content, and monitoring various social media outlets to identify ways MMfA interacts with an online audience, including allies, colleagues, and potential sources, to identify what resonates with readers.
Collaboration: The Assistant Editor communicates with members of all MMfA departments in a collaborative way to ensure effective content and consistent writing style that meets MMfA’s standards for publication. This position reports to the Editor and Editorial Director yet works with various employees, teams, and departments within MMfA.
Minimum of 2 years of experience in writing and/or editing
Background in journalism or communications recommended
Knowledge of AP style extremely helpful
Interest in media and understanding of the effects conservative misinformation has on our public debate
Demonstrated understanding of progressive issues
Knowledge of web-based platforms and/or content management systems helpful
Knowledge of best practices for Search Engine Optimization helpful
Ability to work as part of a team yet independently most of the time
Ability to work under pressure and with a quick turnaround
