Reproductive Rights Researcher

Media Matters for America — is a progressive, Washington, D.C-based, nonprofit research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media. The Media Matters Reproductive Rights Research team provides original research and analysis concerning conservative media misinformation about women’s reproductive health and rights as it relates to policy, legal, and cultural developments at the local, state, and federal levels of government.  The Reproductive Rights Researcher works directly with the Reproductive Rights Program Director in producing content and research.

 Responsibilities:

  • Content Generation:  The Reproductive Rights Researcher is responsible for providing quick response blogs and research items debunking emerging and recurring conservative misinformation in the media, in addition to reinforcing progressive messaging on women’s reproductive health and rights pursuant to direction from the Reproductive Rights Program Director. Additionally, the position assists the Reproductive Rights Program Director with designing and implementing long-term projects that that analyze media coverage of abortion-related issues.

  • Research: The Reproductive Rights Researcher is responsible for identifying and preparing for emerging reproductive health related stories. This includes keeping up to date with anti-choice legislation at both the state and federal levels, legal attacks on law and precedent that protect reproductive rights, and the contours of advocacy groups relevant to the project. While the general Research staff provides support, the Reproductive Rights Researcher is responsible for having a deeper understanding and greater awareness of past and current issues that affect women’s reproductive health and rights.
     

  • Monitoring: The Reproductive Rights Researcher is responsible for reviewing targeted programming/reporting outside the typical monitoring profile of the general Research staff. This could include national and local cable and broadcast programming  as well as certain print and online media outlets.
     

  • General Staff Support: Because the position requires a deep understanding of relating to women’s reproductive health and rights and how to present them to reach a wider audience, the Reproductive Rights Researcher provides support to the general Research staff on content related to this program area. Duties include assisting Researchers regarding the nuances of particular misinformation on these issues.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 1-3 years conducting research or analysis pertaining to to women’s reproductive health and rights.

  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree in political science, public policy, or social science field related to women’s reproductive health and rights.

  • Deep understanding of the current and projected policy, legal, advocacy, and cultural landscape affecting reproductive rights and access to abortion.

  • Deep understanding of the role of the media and anti-abortion groups in spreading misinformation about women’s reproductive health and rights and its cultural effect.

  • Experience working on multiple tasks under tight deadlines. Preferred experience in producing deadline oriented web content.
