O'Reilly on Media Matters "morons" and Islamic fascists in Detroit

May 17, 2005 3:18 pm ET

Fox News host Bill O'Reilly seemed to be referring to Media Matters for America when he attacked "a left-wing website" that he's previously "pointed out." O'Reilly continued: "All these morons do all day long is listen to people like me, they tape the show, and then they throw out misinformation about the show."

Also, while commenting on Newsweek magazine's claim that U.S. investigators found evidence that interrogators at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, flushed a Quran down a toilet (Newsweek has since retracted the report), O'Reilly explained how "anti-American news" reaches its audience: through "anti-U.S. clerics [who] run into mosques and start to scream and yell, 'All Americans are flushing the Quran down the toilet,'" and "Islamic fascists sitting in places like Detroit, monitoring anything that happens in the United States, and bang, it goes out to their brother in Kabul instantaneously."

From the May 13 broadcast of Westwood One's The Radio Factor with Bill O'Reilly:

O'REILLY: Anyway, this flushed-the-Quran-down-the-toilet line, which, by the way, the military denies. They deny it. So it's a he-said, she-said. Sources tell Newsweek -- they don't say who the sources are -- and the military says, "Bunk." So, you know, Newsweek doesn't know, nobody knows whether it is true or not.

They get this, and they get it over to Afghanistan. And the anti-U.S. clerics run into the Mosques and start to scream and yell, "All Americans are flushing the Quran down the toilet. Kill all Americans." And then they run out and riot in four cities and seven are dead, and hundreds are hurt, and there's a big thing. Got it?

So this is unique -- this has never been done before or seen before in the world. What you have now is a bunch of guys who sit around on the Internet, OK? We have them in America all day long. And they listen and they read everything, and as soon as they see something, they spit it out on the Internet to their worldwide organization. So you've got a bunch of Islamic fascists sitting in places like Detroit, monitoring anything that happens in the United States, and bang, it goes out to their brother in Kabul instantaneously. You see what I mean?

Now, this happens all the time, 24/7, all over this country in a variety of ways. As I pointed out to you, there's a left-wing website. All these morons do all day long is listen to people like me, they tape the show, and then they throw out misinformation about the show. That's all they do. OK? And you have it on the right, too. You know, the right-wing bloggers are looking for anything they can find, and they throw it out. But that's not life or death. This is life or death.

O'Reilly has previously referred to Media Matters as "a far left website" that produces "propaganda." He has also likened Media Matters to Mao Zedong, the Ku Klux Klan, and Fidel Castro. In addition, he has called Media Matters "the most vile, despicable human beings in the country," a "far left, deceitful, disgusting website," "character assassins," and "despicable weasels."
