Coulter: If Republicans run Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele for president, Democrats could "start burning crosses"

On the November 4 edition of Fox News' Hannity & Colmes, right-wing pundit Ann Coulter said she "think[s] everyone watching this program needs to contribute to Michael Steele, because I think if we run him on our presidential ticket, we could get the Democrats to actually start burning crosses." Coulter, appearing with Fox News analyst Susan Estrich, was discussing Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele's initial dismissal of controversy surrounding a fund-raiser held in July by Maryland Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., with whom Steele ran successfully in 2002, at the Elkridge Club, a country club in Baltimore that has no African-American members. Steele, who is black and a Republican, recently announced his bid for a U.S. Senate seat in 2006.

From the November 4 edition of Fox News' Hannity & Colmes:

ALAN COLMES (co-host): Let me ask you this, Ann. Let me ask you this: One of the problems here is that Steele, Steele supported the governor going to a whites-only club, and that was one of the reasons some people are speaking out about him. And should he not have denounced it?

ESTRICH: And that's a pretty bad thing to do.

COLMES: Yeah. And he didn't denounce him.

COULTER: I just -- I think everyone --

ESTRICH: You know, I mean, what are you supposed to do when he does that?

COLMES: Ann, go ahead.

COULTER: I think everyone watching this program needs to contribute to Michael Steele, because I think if we run him on our presidential ticket, we could get the Democrats to actually start burning crosses. They're losing their minds, and this is how they are.

ESTRICH: Well, I think that's a ridiculous thing to say. I mean, I think it's really ridiculous, Ann.

      Ann Coulter says the stupidest things I have ever heard. they have no connection to what is being discussed and make no sense whatsoever. This is a perfect example. What a complete and total idiot she is.

        Exactly correct on Coulter - which is further evidence of why her attention and headline grabbing antics are not worthy of mention on this site.

        To do so only inflates her relevance - she is a cartoon.

      Wow, Steele really sold out when he let his supporters give him a fundraiser at an all-white club. I bet that his act of selling-out will convince many African American voters and liberals to vote for his opponent in the upcoming election.

      No labels. Happy?

      Why do you feel it so necassary to label people at all? A sellout, an Uncle Tom? Whatever? If you have a disagreement with a position of his, fine....but to put some inflammatory label on him does nothing except make the person dispensing that label look desperate and foolish.

      I acknowledge that I use the term "liberal", which is a label, granted. A fault of mine, I admit it, but I am trying to steer clear of them in the future and elevate the discussion.

      by tommy -------------------------------------------------

      1. There is nothing wrong with using rhetorical devices in writing.

      2. If you yourself have used 'labels' in the past and present, as you admit, your resolution to 'steer clear of them in the future' is revealed as only a primitive tactic to disarm your opponent from using counterlabels.

      3. An Uncle Tom, like Benedict Arnold, is a rhetorical device known as an eponym. One could also, less poetically, use the term 'traitor' but the eponym is more evocative and apropos in this case. Of course no traitor likes to be called one and thus considers the term 'inflammatory'.

      4. Any black leader who participates in a country club that excludes his own race and winks at the injustice of white racism is an Uncle Tom period. Any white who considers the Tom eponym for this behavior 'racist' reveals himself as an enemy of black people.

        I am proud to be called a liberal, keep trying to pretend it is perjorative, I will never see it that way so to conflate it with uncle Tom is ludicrous. This is a weak attempt to take away a perfectly legitimate rhetorical ploy. Its like saying we shouldnt call a politician a liar even if he IS IN FACT A LIAR. Labels that are justified have legitimacy.

        heru,

        You can throw around labels all you like, call it rhetorical writing, whatever. The point is when one uses them it is for one reason > to label is to marginalize therefore you can dismiss any argument of theirs you disagree with as a "consider the source" deflection. This is done so you can automatically reduce their argument by hanging it on the label you have just given them. It is a tactic used all the time by people whose faith in their own arguments are shaky at best - lessen the other person's credibility so as to shore up your own.

        Go ahead and label if you'd like, but if you can't or won't see the transparency and weakness of doing so - then that's too bad.

        You apparently are very articulate in your posts, seems to me you shouldn't have to reduce yourself or your arguements to the lowest common denominator by using a label

          Actually it is used to conflate an action with a historica or well known like action. I know its very convienient for your present attempt to give cover for bad actions to say we shouldnt call someone who lies a liar or someone who appologizes for his white boss holding a fundraiser at an all white country club but its really an attempt to take an arrow out of our quiver. Its legitimate to call this man an Uncle Tom for THIS behaviour if you think it isnt that can be argued but to just say its NEVER justified is not going to work. Actions have consequences and even though you often try to seperate the actions and the consequences, like when you say we should just ignore Coulter, its not going to work. If Steele doesnt like being called an Uncle Tom I make the suprising suggestion he stop behaving in Uncle Tom like fashion

            *******************************

            What the hell does that mean?

            solon, Don't divert the argument by saying I am trying to excuse bad behavior - that's ridiculous. You can judge Steele's behavior any way you'd like - call him on it on the merits of what he did, the actions he took and why they are wrong. But to call him an inflammatory, racially charged name is childish - no matter how you package it. You can drum up all the rationalizations you want - but your credibility suffers as a result.

            By the same token, he could call you another name and you could call him one back and it never ends - let alone it does nothing to address the real issue or further the debate.

            You are not dense, you know all this.......don't sink to the level of some here.

              No I am not dense and I still disagree, no you are NOT trying to excuse bad behavior, I havent seen you do that very often. What you ARE doing is trying to protect them from one of the consequences of bad behavior. As for what kind of behavior it is to call him on his Uncle Tom like behavior thats your opinion I disagree. Again if he doesnt like being called Uncle Tom perhaps he ought to stop acting like an Uncle Tom

      "That is the reason the political pendulum swings back and forth so much, nothing anyone can really hold on to as truth from most elected officials these days."

      The reason it swings back and forth is because the American people are wiser than people give them credit for. They know that having one party control all three branches of government is bad news. When this tendency went against us (Democrats) in the past, I understood the need for balance. For instance, when the House went Republican in 1994. Gridlock actually can be a good thing. However, I didn't anticipate that the power drunk Republicans would run the country so firmly into the ground when they got their shot at hegemony. They've taken dirty politics and made it into an art form. I can't imagine biparisanship occurring in a real way in the forseeable future as a result.

        One in the same. Here is a link to a recent article about him in our local AA newspaper. [link to www.afro.com]

        It appears the RNC has gone on the offensive in attacking Black Democrats as racist because they don't support this very conservative LT gov. I think this is their strategy for Steele’s upcoming 2006 US Senate race. He's already thrown in his hat. I guess we’re supposed to feel sorry for the persecuted Black conservative and vote for him. Everyone I've talked to about this sees right through this scheme. Neocon manipulations don't work very well in the AA community and I think they are beginning to falter period.

      Someone please get a big butterfly net and bag this nutty woman(?). How will running a black man for president under the auspices of the Republican “big tent” make Democrats burn crosses? All the Dixiecrats, the ones who loathed the civil rights movement, who hated MLK, who despised RFK, became Republicans. I’d love to see all those easily race-baited white Republicans from the South casting their primary/caucus votes for a black candidate. On that day, pigs will fly and the sky will rain chocolates and teddy bears.

        Maybe she's envisioning some sort of reverse Southern Strategy in which those Dixiecrats abandon the Republican party for just long enough to make Democrats look bad.

        There's no way to bar anyone from joining the party, is there? To cut down on the number of Rethug plants, I propose that we turn away anyone who says they want to join the Democrat party. Most Ex-Dixiecrats I see on television would burst into flame before they'd pronounce the party name correctly.

      Of course, Ann Coulter wouldn't answer the question about whether or not it was OK for Steele to defend Erlich's holding a fundraiser at an ALL-WHITE country club. I'd like to see a link to a Maryland newspaper that covered the Lt. Gov. Steele being "pelted with Oreos". Sounds to me like a fabricated ReThuglican myth that appeared in the DC Moonie rag and was picked up unchecked by numerous rightwing blogs. While it's not necessarily a debate-worthy tactic to call him an Uncle Tom, if it's other black folks doing the name-calling, it hardly fits the definition of racist.

            Race is a term we use to describe the artificial divisions that have been placed between us by our forefathers. Modern science acknowledges that the concept of race breaks down at the genetic level.

            Did you know that there is less genetic variation between a caucasian person and an Asian then between someone with ancestors in Western Africa and one from Southern Africa? In reality, there is a continuum of variation that defies demarcation.

              1. Racial discrimination may have been an artificial psuedoscientific European social-political-legal-economic-anthropological construction but it is (or has been made) very real over the past 500 years.

              2. "Our" forefathers didn't create race, European forefathers did. My African forefathers, who were enslaved because of it, certainly didn't.

              3. Race does not completely break down at the genetic level, thus scientists were able, for example, to recently discover a new medicine for heart disease, I believe, that works for blacks, not whites.

                That's immaterial. Of course genetic diversity exists, but that doesn't mean there are clear demarcations between the races genetically. As stated previously, there is actually more diversity AMONGST the African population then there is between the different ethnicities.

      Anybody here seen the movie "they live" by John Carpenter? Pretty entertaining movie with some amusing social commentary. Essentially, aliens have taken over most of society and are brainwashing people with subliminal messages as they complete their domination. Some humans know about the conspiracy but go along with it against their own people as the aliens promise a good life for them. Steele's story reminded me of this movie for some reason....

      First of all, I really wish MediaMatters would just ignore Ann Coulter altogether, cos she is an ass and irrelevant to the serious debate on important issues.

      Secondly, as a Maryland resident who follows the local political scene here, the story of Lt. Gov Steele being "pelted with Oreo cookies", is false. The author of the article where this falsehood came from wrote that Oreo cookies were distributed among the audience that was present during Steele's appearance at Morgan State University in Baltimore. A radio host here in maryland on one of the rightie stations claimed Steele was pelted with Oreo cookies, but that is again FALSE.

      Needless to say, the fact that Steele is being labeled an Uncle Tom by some in the black communities in Maryland is retarded and inexcusable, however I prefer we debate on the facts. Steele was not pelted with Oreo cookies.

      I posted this as a reply to another poster. I am hoping by putting it here it won't get deleted in a string.

      +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

      Competing Conservative and Liberal philosophies are nothing new to the AA community and it predates the modern Republican and Democratic Parties. There were two dueling schools of thought between Booker T. Washington and WEB Dubois the founder of the NAACP. Washington thought that Blacks shouldn’t actively petition government for equal rights and for protection of rights. He thought Blacks should keep a low profile and demonstrate industriousness and lived upstanding lives and that Whites would eventually take notice and decide that we were indeed worthy of a modicum of government protection. He also championed the status quo of segregation and asserted that we could indeed have separate but equal societies. Booker T. Washington was the darling of the ruling White elite class. He was entertained at the White House and spoke often before White Business leaders. Those White leaders also made large donations to the trade schools Washington ran that trained Blacks to be proper servants and domestics and good representatives for "negro industriousness".

      Jeter guess which school of thought prevail in the AA community? I can only guess where we would be if Booker T. Washington's vision had reached fruition.

Ann like many Whites are unaware that Black political philosphy developed independent of mainstream American poltics and these kind of metaphors here do nothing to help her cause. AAs were presented with dueling schools of thought from their 19th and 20th century leaders and the vast majority adopted one over the other. It had nothing to do with White polticians and to think otherwise is just WRONG.

        While I think it's too bad to still be hearing a term like "Uncle Tom" used in this day and age, it certainly is understandable seeing that Michael Steele blew off any criticism of Maryland Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. 's plans to hold a fundraiser at an all white country club.

        Steele should have blasted Ehrlich. His lack of criticism is obviously demeaning to other Blacks. So while I don't like the term Uncle Tom, or throwing oreo cookies (if this actually took place), Michael Steele deserves to be lambasted for calling the Governor's choice of venue "a bunch of nothing".

        I'm not surprised if Blacks are angry with him.

        HEAR NO EVIL SEE NO EVIL SPEAK NO EVIL

        Maybe by ignoring them or having them erased by the overzealous moderators here, the ideas will cease to exist.

      I am really sick of this line of though pushed by the repubs lately that dems should support every black politician or else they are racist. Believe it or not, dems are capable of seeing past one's race and making decisions based on political position. What makes it even worse is when black repub politicians (the two or three that are out there) allow this exploitation to continue. I lived in MD when Governor Erlich and Steele were running, and many marylanders who were not in touch with current event didn't even know that Steele was Black. That is because his picture wasn't on any campaign posters except those in the inner city and PG county bordering DC. He certainly wasn't flaunted in the rural areas where racism is abundant, and I knew of no racists that were going to vote democratic. They either voted repub, or if they didn't like the candidate (i.e. because he is black) they wouldn't vote. So the party that courts racists and bigots is calling the other party racist because they don't like their candidate? That's just stupid.

      re: Coulter: If Republicans run Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele for president, Democrats could "start burning crosses"

      It should be noted that when Susan Estrich asked Ann Coulter if she was against 'Whites Only' clubs and organizations, she refused to answer. After what seemed to have been an eternity of silence, Hannity answered for her. You know you're a disgrace when Hannity is embarrassed by you...

      =============================================================

      Assuming Hannity really WAS embarassed by Liar Ann Coulter. They're 2 right wing racist scum from the same toxic cloth!

      Ol' Liar Ann refused to answer the question because she KNOWS her answer is indefensible, because being the right wing white conservative racist hate hag that Coulter is, she FAVORS all white clubs and organizations. She dreams of seeing Pleesy reinstated, and has fantasies about murdering people of color.

      As "The Black Eagle" Joe Madison said, Ol' Liar Ann is "talkin' lies and syaing nothing." Madison's said the same thing about Hannity and the rest of the lying con-artist-servatives.

      Smelly Red Herring

      Ever notice how neocons faced with evidence of their own indefensible ridiculous speech (eg., Ann Coulter relishing the KKK idea of cross burning) inevitably seek to divert attention by resorting to the imposition of logical fallacies as debate strategy (eg., creating a black straw man to throw Oreo cookies at Michael Sellout Steele)? So ignorant so sad LOL

      by heru

      =============================================================

      I've noticed that, Heru. Many a time I've noticed that from the racist right wing white conservatives.

      Having a right wing racist hate hag like Ann Coulter praising an anti-black black conservative self-hating racist like Micheal Steele, and Ann Coulter's "praise" of Steele is itself RACIST, as Ann's "compliment" is a back door way of expressing Coulter's racist hatred of black people and her racist "liking" of Steele because Steele harbors even stronger racist sentiments against his own race, is yet another personal indictment against Steele.

      It also illustrates one of Coulter's MANY personal indictments. Coulter's filth ridden racist hateful violent columns are carried by some white supremacist sites, and Coulter herself believes in white supremacy, and sadly, so does Micheal Steele.

      African-Americans have historically voted against black politicians who command praise and respect and support from thier racist enemies like Coulter, like Drugbaugh, etc.

      Also, on the national black talk radio network, on XM 169/THE POWER, on black talk radio host Mark Thompson's show yesterday, Thompson and all of his black callers were BLASTING Steele, and all of the black callers said that Steele DESERVED to be called the names and subject to the attacks that he's received. Thompson and the callers also said that Steele and the Republicans were playing the race card, which they were. Having black talk radio come out 100% AGAINST Steele is yet ANOTHER personal indictment against him.

      Concluding this post, the neo-cons that you speak of sound like this neo-con racist that sent an e-mail to Thompson and the rest of the black talk radio hosts at THE POWER where this unnamed ignorant racist fool attacked them for going after THE BUSH CABAL and other conservatives, attacked them for speaking against white supremacy, among other ignorant racist toxic ooze.

      In my opinion, the Black Republican has roots, in some cases, it is physical, while in other cases it is in ideology only. You can trace the Black Republican form of compliant thinking to "Uncle Tom's Cabin." It is a sad under-researched dynamic spawned from slavery as some slaves took many measures to stop some of the physical and separation abuse imposed on them as a means to control them.

      To cope with the many beatings associated with plantation life, Blacks were forced into compliance. You need only to go to a land where you don't understand the language; add to this someone beating the skin off your back for words you can't seem to understand. By the principles described in conditional learning alone, Blacks understood a basic rule to survive, and not get beat, was to comply. Doing what they thought the masters wanted them to do was quickly learned and passed on as a survival technique.

      The house slave is a direct product of compliance to avoid beatings. As those who understood this concept most became trusted and delegated to instruct other slaves who did not know the rules and language, thus, the Uncle Tom was born.

      From the very beginning, the Uncle Tom thought he was better than the others because he could speak like the whites, dress like the whites, and if given the chance, he could even criticise like the whites. There was only one glaring problem to Uncle's Tom's status: he was still black.

      Throughout the years, the Uncle Tom's need to demonstrate this extreme form of compliance has evolved to the now Black Republican, complete with his so called "just like Whites" conditioning, but now he's joined a political Party that seems to give his status deceptions a true sense of belonging and that was the Republican Party..

      Coulter's basically saying that blacks are stupid. They vote in massive majorities for Democrats, even though Democrats are the REAL racist party in America.

      All the while ignoring that neo-nazis and KKK members are much more likely to identify with Republicans than Democrats, if they are not part of a fringe political party, and that Republicans employed the "Southern Strategy" to great effect for the last 40 years. And she'll point to Byrd, while ignoring Thurmond, Helms and Lott.

      Yeah, Democrats are the racist party. Tell me another bedtime story. Maybe something out of the Bible, about a nine-hundred year old man, or a woman who turned to salt. I'm SURE those really happened, too.

I no longer read their tripe and frankly, question the intelligence of anyone who does read it for pleasure. Of course Aryan was joking. Isn't that always the reich-wing defense? The Republicans have tied themselves to the most extreme elements to hammer together their base. The radical evangelicals were recently referred to as "whacko" by a high ranking repub. Aryan is a comic; not an amusing one, but definitely a joke. I can imagine her in 25 years plying her trade in Branson, MO. Or maybe Kansas. I bet they would really dig her

      Are you saying the Conservative pundits are hate mongers or racist?

      =============================================================

      They're BOTH hate mongers AND racists! Add to that, they're advocates of white supremacy! White supremacy as in keeping the rich white corporate elites like themselves!

      =============================================================

      Why do Liberals always accuse Conservsatives as hate mongers?

      =============================================================

      Because they ARE hate mongers! VIOLENT hate mongers!

      Add to that, 2 days ago, on the national black talk radio station on satellite radio, XM 169/THE POWER, one of your fellow hate mongering uneducated racist conservative lemmings sent a racist spelling error filled e-mail to all of the excellent black talk radio hosts of THE POWER where he made racist slams against the hosts and THE POWER's majority black audience. Was that YOU, or somebody you know?

      =============================================================

      Why don't you just look at your post if you want see a hate monger.

      And by the way, Ann's comment is a joke. Something you don't understand.

      =============================================================

      Cons are such big liars. You're a foolish racist white supremacist scum, just like Ann Coulter is. Ann Coulter's a violent, evil, hate mongering racist, as are you and the rest of the people who like scum like her! Echoing the words said by THE POWER's black talk radio host Mark Thompson 2 days ago on "Make It Plain", you and the rest of the foolish whites think that white supremacist elites like Coulter speak for you, when in reality, she and her conservative ilk don't care about you at all!

      ============================================================

      One more thing, have you heard about Al Franken? Seems like Franken just might not like black people. Out of 112 employees he hired only 1 black person. Yes, I would say that is evidence that Al Franken does not like black people.

      =============================================================

      How many NON RIGHT WING RACIST BLACKS has William Bennett hired? We KNOW that Bennett hates black people! YOU hate black people! Franken's NOT a racist, but YOU, Coulter, and other con-artist-servative racists are!

      Furthermore, Newsmuck.com and Newsbusters.org are both LYING web sites that tell RIGHT WING LIES on a 24-7-365 basis!

      =============================================================

      Ask Howard Dean how many blacks he had working for him as Governor. Also ask Kerry and Kennedy the same question.

      =============================================================

      What does that have to do with racist Ann Coulter's LATEST racist rantings, other than nothing? And since you are a racist yourself, spare us your pretend outrage.

      How many NON-RIGHT WING RACIST BLACK PEOPLE has Racist Bush hired? NONE!

      =============================================================

      And finally, what about Robert Byrd of West Virgina. He was in the KKK. Did you know that?

      =============================================================

      Since you are a racist that's a likely member of the same KKK and/or some other white supremacist organization yourself, spare us your pretend outrage.

      Racist Republican House Rep. Dana Rohrabacher accepts campaign contributions from the white supremacist Pioneer Fund. Racist Republican U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions called a white civil rights lawyer in his state a race traitor.

      Also, many anti-black black conservative racists have political alliances with white supremacists. Anti-black black conservative racist Walter Williams is a friend and political ally of right wing white supremacist Jared Taylor. Anti-black black conservative racist Jesse Lee Peterson is a friend and political ally of right wing white supremacist Glenn Spencer and Spencer's white supremacist group, the National Alliance.

      Have Racist Ann go on XM 169/THE POWER or any other black talk radio station in this country and have her repeat her racist "jokes" TO THE FACES of black people. I know that THE POWER's Joe Madison, Bernie McCain, Mark Thompson, Barbara Reynolds, and Dr. Wilmer Leon, and all of their black callers will LOVE to rip racist Ann had her racist supporters and fans to verbal shreds. But I know that right wing racists like Ann NEVER make racist comments about blacks to their faces!

      Also, racist navyseals, Racist Republican U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama called a white lawyer in his state a race traitor in 2002.

      Add to that, many of the anti-black black conservative racists have politicial allaicnes with present-day white supremacists. Anti-black black conservative racist Walter Williams is a friend and politcial ally of the Aryan Nation's Jared Taylor, anti-black black conservative racist Jesse Lee Peterson is a friend and political ally of white supremacist Glenn Spencer and Spencer's racist organization, The National Alliance. Anti-black black conservative racist Ken Hamblin is one of the KNOWN infamous black members of the racist Council of Conservative Citizens.
