AIM's Kincaid called for "Quit Gay Sex" campaign

December 14, 2005 8:11 pm ET

Accuracy in Media (AIM) editor Cliff Kincaid called for news organizations to engage in a "Quit Gay Sex" campaign against "the dangerous and addictive homosexual lifestyle," given that "[l]ife-threatening sexually transmitted diseases among homosexuals are on the increase."

Accuracy in Media (AIM) editor Cliff Kincaid argued in a December 14 commentary posted to the right-wing media watchdog website that news organizations should engage in a "Quit Gay Sex" campaign against "the dangerous and addictive homosexual lifestyle," using as justification for his argument the November "Quit to Live" anti-smoking campaign launched by ABC News after veteran journalist Peter Jennings died of lung cancer. Kincaid argued that news organizations should take up similar campaigns against homosexuality, given that "[l]ife-threatening sexually transmitted diseases among homosexuals are on the increase."

Kincaid wrote, "As if it wasn't bad enough that the homosexual men are HIV-positive, they simply cannot stop having sex with other men. ... They think this is 'responsible' sex. But they are increasing their risk of acquiring other sexually transmitted infections, including new resistant strains of HIV."

Jennings, who was the anchor and senior editor of ABC's World News Tonight for more than 20 years, was diagnosed with lung cancer in April and died August 7. In November, ABC News launched its "Quit to Live" campaign in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Cancer Institute, and the North American Quit Line Consortium. The campaign included a series of documentaries on the dangers of smoking, methods to quit smoking, and lung cancer research and prevention.

Media Matters for America has documented a series of statements about homosexuality published by Kincaid through the AIM website, including:

  • "[Howard Dean's] success will depend on concealing the facts about Dean's homosexual experiment [which purportedly "implemented the homosexual agenda" in Vermont] -- and how he has used young people as sexual guinea pigs." [12/10/03]
  • "The problem with the [Tucker] Carlson show [on MSNBC] is the format, which places too much emphasis on his guests, including a regular named Rachel Maddow, a radio host on Air America who is described as the first out-of-the-closet lesbian to be named a Rhodes Scholar. She is a lesbian with hair so short that she looks like a man." [8/1/05]
  • "The Washington Post is emerging as a virtual house organ of the homosexual-rights movement." [7/20/03]

From Kincaid's December 14 "Media Monitor" column at Accuracy in Media:

Have you noticed that many news organizations, in honor of former ABC News anchorman Peter Jennings, have embarked on a quit smoking campaign? So why don't our media launch a campaign advising people to quit engaging in the dangerous and addictive homosexual lifestyle? Life-threatening sexually transmitted diseases among homosexuals are on the increase.

[...]

That's performing a good public service. But let's take this humanitarian impulse one step further. We would suggest that ABC News take on another dangerous practice--homosexuality. The latest reports indicate a rising pattern of sexually transmitted diseases nationwide. The 2005 estimate for syphilis cases is the highest in a decade, and the number of gonorrhea cases will exceed any other year's count since 1993. Federal officials attribute the increases mostly to HIV-positive homosexual men having sex with one another. The practice is called "serosorting."

The practice shows the dangerous and addictive nature of the homosexual lifestyle. As if it wasn't bad enough that the homosexual men are HIV-positive, they simply cannot stop having sex with other men. So they are still having sex, this time with other HIV-positive men. They think this is "responsible" sex. But they are increasing their risk of acquiring other sexually transmitted infections, including new resistant strains of HIV.

It appears that the homosexual lifestyle is as addictive as smoking.

It seems as though Cliff Kinkaid spends a lot of his time thinking about homosexual issues. Maybe he has a fixation with gay men, or better yet, maybe he is gay himself! Remember the Jeff Gannon fiasco... such a scandal is not unheard of among right-wing demagogues!

"It appears that the homosexual lifestyle is as addictive as smoking." - Kincaid

ANYONE, and I mean ANYONE, who smokes enough cigarettes will become addicted. Same thing with drugs and alchohol. Is Kincaid also saying that if he himself engages in enough gay sex, he will become addicted to it? The only reason that he is not addicted to it is because he doesn't do it? Do other Republicans believe this? I know liberals don't.

I've never understood why the supposed "Moral Majority" would be so fearful of a group of people that make up (if you believe the Conservatives) only about 3% of the population.

Its funny....when the issue is "gay rights" its thrown around that why should "we" (the moral majority) have to bend (over) to this small group of "sub-humans"?

But, I'd say they (the Moral Majority) spend 95% of their time and energy complaining about how this "small group of sub-humanoids" are destroying the entire fabric of civilization!

      How can that be?

Sounds like someone is a) a little too obsessed with the sex lives of gay men to be considered straight, b) NOT ACCURATE in offering his tired, stereotypical opinions on gays. Kincaid, who should know better but doesn't, offers logical fallacies and stereotypes as "facts". Someone who is that busy peddling logical fallacies as facts, is hardly in a position to point out "accuracy" in media.

Being gay is NOT a choice, and being gay does not result in some sort of automatic addictive behaviors. Just because I am gay, does not mean I'm a) a sex addict, b) a drug addict, c) HIV +, d) interested in catching HIV.

It seems to me like this Kincaid guy has some addictive behaviors of his own however, given his ludicrous statements; he appears to be addicted to worrying obsessively/compulsively about the sex lives of gay men.

How can anyone take a person seriously if they believe homosexuality is an addiction?

Cliff is a sad little man.

Yet another simplistic "solution" from the rightwing, who claim the Democrats have "no ideas".

Parallelling Nancy Reagan's "JUST SAY NO" approach to drug use -- another perfect Rightwing "solution" in that it costs the rightwinger nothing but judgmentalism and lip service.

So, Kincaid believes homosexuals should "JUST SAY NO" to sex.

Using his "logic", of course, America should "JUST SAY NO" to driving on America's roads, since the "behavior" of driving leads to tens of thousands of deaths yearly. Because driving is dangerous, and is proven to cost lives, then we should just say NO to it. Right, Kincaid?

Actually, this Rightwing meltdown is fun to watch. Covers are being blown, hysteria is taking its place. It's all coming apart for our NeoCon friends who HAD IT ALL, and blew it by being themselves.

Simplistic "solutions" only reveal the mindset of the proposer, the biases, the bigotries, the hatred. I for one am happy that the Rightwing, in their current panic, are letting us glimpse into their true goals.

Many of our citizens are homosexual. As a group, why would they be any more likely to heed a call to cease having sex than redheads or orientals?

Yeah, you used quotation marks, but it still made me laugh. ;-)

I guess he's using the same analytical process that leads him to connect pot smoking with violent murder.

His powers of deduction amaze me. I'd go light a joint and have some gay sex now, but I might get addicted or kill someone.

        Thus quoth TEX.

But then again, about the only media outlets as would seriously be willing to take Mr. Kincaid's offer seriously are more than likely those with obvious religiopolitically conservative views, among them:

      • FamilyNet/Liberty Broadcasting;
      • CBN;
      • American Family Radio; and
      • Salem Radio Networks.
      • All of whom have known connexions to homophobic causes, sects, and their articles of faith.

Howbeit such based on flawed or otherwise faulty logic, a/k/a "doublethink" and its equally-ignorant cousin, "blackwhite."

(N.B. "Blackwhite," in Orwellian Doublethink, is "the willingness to accept the exact opposite of obvious facts--e.g., accepting that black is white, and vice versa--if and when required to do so for the sake of Party loyalty.")

He uses the HIV epidemic as proof that homosexual sex is dangerous, but Lesbians have an extremely low HIV prevalence, so I guess he is just anti male homosexuality; although he seems to have a problem with women with short hair. Wonder what did he think about Halle Berry, until recently she wore her hair extremely short and she is a glamorous heterosexual femme fatale.

That's not going to fly. What gay man would want to be celibate forever just to please a bunch of right wingers?

How about we substitute "Make a Promise to Be Faithful to Just One Partner."

Oh wait. That'd be gay marriage, wouldn't it. My bad.
