In a segment on recent protests against proposed immigration restrictions, nationally syndicated radio host Glenn Beck stated that Mexico "has been overtaken by lawbreakers from the bottom to the top," adding, "And now what you're protesting for is to have lawbreakers come here." Beck, who was recently hired to host a new program on CNN Headline News, made his remarks during the March 27 edition of Premiere Radio Networks' The Glenn Beck Program. During the past week, thousands of people in Los Angeles -- including hundreds of high school students -- marched in the streets to protest a federal immigration bill that would criminalize the provision of aid to undocumented immigrants and make it a felony to cross the border illegally.

Earlier in the same program, Beck also lambasted three members of the Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) who were rescued in Iraq last week in a British-led military operation. He asked, "[I]s there any way we can get the Marines to recapture them [the activists], kidnap them, and bring them back to their captors that they love so much?" He also claimed that the activists were "quick to blame the coalition forces for their kidnapping." As Media Matters for America previously noted, on March 23, the CPT organization, whose mission, according to its website, is to reduce violence by "getting in the way," appended an addendum to a press release on the rescue, stating: "We have been so overwhelmed and overjoyed to have [kidnapped activists] Jim [Loney], Harmeet [Singh Sooden] and Norman [Kember] freed, that we have not adequately thanked the people involved with freeing them, nor remembered those still in captivity ... We are grateful to the soldiers who risked their lives to free Jim, Norman and Harmeet."

Media Matters for America has urged its readers to contact CNN and call for the news channel to stop providing a platform for Beck's conservative misinformation and offensive statements.

From the March 27 broadcast of Premiere Radio Networks' The Glenn Beck Program:

BECK: They wasted absolutely no time on their website praising thanks upon the U.S. military who went in and rescued them, uh, they also on the website had strong words for their captors -- no hang on. I'm sorry, no -- I have that reversed. Actually the ex-hostages were quick to blame the coalition forces for their kidnapping. On their website they offered words of goodwill toward their captors. Remember, one in the four had been beheaded by the kidnappers. The U.S. Marines--they were not, they didn't, they were not released, the U.S. Marines went in and rescued them. And I thought to myself, is there any way we can get the Marines to recapture them, kidnap them, and bring them back to their captors that they love so much? Why are we wasting our time rescuing people like this, who don't have any worth. You had your friend and your, you, your cohort beheaded, the U.S. military risks their life to go save you, and you bash them? You know what, put them back on a plane, send them back there.

[...]

BECK: First of all, you are, you are, protesting -- and I appreciate the fact that it was peaceful -- but you are protesting for something that is illegal. You are protesting for others to stay here who are here illegally. And I don't understand that. I don't understand that for a couple of reasons. You want to leave Mexico for a reason, and that reason is that it is so riddled with corruption that you cannot have a job and make money there. It is so riddled with drugs and corruption and mob that you cannot raise a family. It is a country that has been overtaken by lawbreakers from the bottom to the top. And now, what you're protesting for is to have lawbreakers come here. And you might say: "Well they're just trying to get here, that's only one law." It's a law.

Glenn must be against Bush's illegal wiretapping program - because it is illegal.

      Right?

I used to feel that MMFA's coverage of O'Reilly was excessive and worthy of review...

O'Reilly looks like a legitimate newscaster compared to this guy. The Mormons must be proud to call Beck one of their own.

Most of the comments I have seen cited as reasons Glenn Beck is unfit for the airwaves have been taken completely out of context. His show is very heavy on sarcasm. You can't take it too seriously.

Glenn Beck freely admits (quite often on his show) that he is a recovering alcoholic ex-deejay, ex-scumbag. He also freely admits his biases. Everyone knows where he is coming from. On the other hand, network newscasters with very obvious biases never admit to them and claim to be fair and balanced.

I really don't see what the fuss is about here. If his show is entertaining and people watch it, it will live. If not, it will die. Everyone if free to choose whether to watch or not. If you don't like the show, simply turn the channel. Isn't that the way it should be?

"It is so riddled with drugs and corruption and mob that you cannot raise a family." So, by denying people the right to flee this corruption are we to assume Beck is pro-drugs and corruption, while being anti-family? Man that is a tough sell, Beck, but you stick by those guns. Hopefully, you'll finally manage to shoot yourself in the the foot fatally.

I don't think anyone, Republican or Democrat, are AGAINST Legal Immigration. So yeah a lot of people are missing something here. I don't care IF it's Mexicans, Chinese, Irish, Russian etc--IF you want to RESIDE in this country --get in line and come HERE legally. No exceptions.

And IF you don't want to play by OUR rules&law then YOU are a felon and should be deported. And any business that hires YOU should be fined and anyone that hides/helps you BREAK THE LAW should also be considered a FELON....Period.

Guest worker programs are fine--IF you abide by the rules...and NO it should NOT be a short-cut to citizenship. YOU go home when your "Work time" is finished and APPLY (if you want to become a "citizen") like anyone else would be expected to. Simple.

Guest worker programs are wrong. We shouldn't use these people for labor and expect them to gain no fruit from their endeavor except a artifically low wage. We might as well just ship the jobs directly to Mexico and eliminate the middle man. The only reason the Bushies are for the guest worker program is because it legalizes businesses exploitation of illegal immigration while retaining the benefit of cheap labor. The old adage always applies. Follow the money.

I don't even want a Guest Worker Program, BUT I think the politicians will include it in ANY Bill they eventually pass. I'd rather they either come here legally or stay put.

HOWEVER, if it's included I still believe it should ONLY be for a temporary stay in this country. Seasonal work if you will. Should they want to make it permanent...they can APPLY for citizenship the old fashion way--LEGALLY.

You should listen to Glenn Beck more. There are plenty of things that he says that you could be writing about here. Media Matters could put up pages and pages of comments about what Glenn says on his radio show.

Then, when I am too busy to catch his show, I can tune in here and not only be entertained by what witty things Glenn has to say, I can also be entertained by how the editors at Media Matters are so adept at taking things out of context.

Do you seriously think that Glenn wants to send those members of the Christian Peacemaker Teams that were rescued (Not "freed" but RESCUED) from their captors? Of course not. And neither do I. However, when those ingrates who don't support those who risked their lives to save their sorry hides, the military troops that God gave the strength and courage to save them, well... compared to those ingrates, why are you condemning Glenn for using sarchasm to make a good point?

This guy is supposed to be given a free pass because that is sarcasm? Not at all, that is unfiltered hate speech.

First of all, the late Christian peacekeeper was shot to death, not beheaded. And if you paid any attention to the aims of their organization, you would know that they are pacifists, so it makes perfect sense for them to correctly blame the US for starting the war in the first place.

Next, the racist line against mexico is so dripping with hatred it is beneath anyone's dignity to comment. But, let me say, that the eastern bloc's immigrants have been welcomed with open arms to participate in the american dream, and I think we all would say that they came from politically corrupt countries.

        ....is simply lazy.

I know that it may fit more neatly into your window on the world, but its just plain wrong.

I oppose illegal immigration, simply because it is illegal. We have an obligation as a nation to pick and choose who gets in and who doesn't based on our needs. It is our sovereign right. LBJ understood this when he pushed Congress to pass the Immigration Act of 1965, which replaced the horribly racist immigration bills of the 1920s.

There is a solution here. But crying racism when somebody diagrees with you is as disgusting as Democrats being labeled "Un American" a few years ago.

Hmmm, yeah, nice straw man. Who said simply having an opposing view point on the matter makes you racist? The racism comes in where he paints all Mexicans as corrupt and criminals. This is not simple opposition.

"But crying racism when somebody diagrees with you is as disgusting as Democrats being labeled "Un American" a few years ago."

      .... for once.

Mexico is one of the more corrupt countries in the hemisphere, so much so that many of its citizens will break our nations laws to try to make a decent life for themselves. Hmmm. I wonder if all the energy that is currently being expended on the behalf of illegal immigrants on this side of the Rio Grande would be spent on the Mexican side if there wouldn't be meaningful reform in Mexico? When is the last time that half a million Mexicans protested their own government and its practices? Oh, right. Never. Because that's how people disappear in Mexico.
