Olbermann named O'Reilly "Worst Person in the World" for threatening a boycott on Mexico

May 23, 2006 3:28 pm ET

Keith Olbermann named Bill O'Reilly the winner of his daily "Worst Person in the World" award for warning Mexico's foreign secretary, Luis Ernesto Derbez, "If the Mexican government files one lawsuit in the U.S.A., one, pertaining to the National Guard, I will call for a total boycott of Mexican goods and no travel to your country." O'Reilly also suggested that Derbez "give the French ambassador a call" so he could "fill" Derbez "in" on the effects of an O'Reilly-sponsored boycott.

On the May 22 edition of MSNBC's Countdown, host Keith Olbermann named Fox News host Bill O'Reilly the winner of his daily "Worst Person in the World" award for comments O'Reilly made on the May 17 edition of The O'Reilly Factor. As Media Matters for America noted, O'Reilly threatened a boycott of Mexico if the country's foreign secretary, Luis Ernesto Derbez, makes good on a promise to sue the United States if evidence emerges that the National Guard is directly helping to detain Mexican citizens trying to enter the United States illegally. O'Reilly warned Derbez, "If the Mexican government files one lawsuit in the U.S.A., one, pertaining to the National Guard, I will call for a total boycott of Mexican goods and no travel to your country." Continuing, O'Reilly suggested that Derbez "give the French ambassador a call" so he could "fill" Derbez "in" on the effects of an O'Reilly-sponsored boycott. As Media Matters also noted, O'Reilly has often overstated the impact of his alleged boycott on French goods, claiming that it has caused the French economy to lose "billions of dollars," even citing the "Paris Business Review" -- the existence of which Media Matters has yet to find evidence -- as a source to back up his claim.

Olbermann mocked the idea that O'Reilly had any such impact on the French economy by imitating what the French ambassador might have to say in response to O'Reilly: 'Allô, Monsieur Ambassadeur? O'Reilly? Mais oui, it is called a delusion of grandeur. Monsieur O'Reilly is, how you say, the 'Worst Person in the World.' "

Olbermann said of the award, "It's for you, Stewie" -- a reference to a character from the animated TV show Family Guy who, during an introduction to a segment earlier in the program, asked, "[W]hy the deuce doesn't he just do more stories about that bastard Bill O'Reilly?"

O'Reilly who is a frequent recipient of Olbermann's "Worst Person in the World" award, most recently received the award on May 17 after claiming that The New York Times and "many far-left thinkers believe the white power structure that controls America is bad, so a drastic change is needed."

From the May 23 edition of MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann:

OLBERMANN: But speaking of which, the winner -- he's on quite a run. It's for you, Stewie. You may remember when he claimed his boycott of France had cost the French economy billions of dollars and quoted his source, the "Paris Business Review," even though there isn't a "Paris Business Review"? Well, now it's Mexico. Threatening it with O'Reilly double-secret probation. If Mexico files one lawsuit over the National Guard troops assigned to the border, Bill O says, quote, "I will call for a total boycott of Mexican goods and no travel to your country. And if you think it doesn't matter, Mr. Secretary, why don't you give the French ambassador a call, he'll fill you in," unquote. 'Allô, Monsieur Ambassadeur? O'Reilly? Mais oui, it is called a delusion of grandeur. Monsieur O'Reilly is, how you say, the "Worst Person in the World."

I just booked a mini vacation for my family and I to go to Ensenada, Mexico. I can't wait. LIving in SoCal, I have been there numerous times. Especially between the ages of 18 and 21, wink wink. I have always had a great experience going there for over twenty years now. The people have been nothing but courteous to me. As in our case, blame the government, not the people. IMO, Americans should learn Spanish. It is one of the three major languages in the world. It is THE language of the western hemishpere. Look at a map. Only two of the countires in this hemesphere speak english.

As for O'Reilly, what is there to say???

I agree. If I go to Mexico or any of the other countries in the southern hemisphere it would be very beneficial to speak Spanish. But at the same time, if someone from one of those countries comes to the USA to live and work, they should take the time to learn English!

        Tell that to Ludacris.

Please don't forget to mention the Paris Business Review in any or all responses.

Ludacris is not a sovereign nation with thirty two billion dollars in exports anually, Furthermore , the average age of "Factor viewers" is past sixty. I doubt if anyone in that age group follows rap music anyway. Let's try to compare apples to apples. It makes for a more enlightened dialogue.

Ludacris is not a sovereign nation with thirty two billion dollars in exports anually,

True but nevertheless the boycott worked on Ludacris. I personally don't think a boycott is even necessary with France. Unemployment among young people in the country is at 25% (higher than the average during the U.S. great depression) so they seem not to need any help in destroying their economy.

Furthermore , the average age of "Factor viewers" is past sixty. I doubt if anyone in that age group follows rap music anyway.

One can form an opinion after hearing the lyrics of Ludacris without following rap music so that is completely irrelevant. Commentator shows like O'Reilly's ALL consist of older audiences as does the network news. O'Reilly is beating his cable competition in all age demographics and by far. I know, I know high ratings don't mean quality unless the media outlet in question is pushing our own agenda.

I just wanted to mention how I'm sure the White House appreciates that Bill is taking international economic and political relations into his own hands. If he's not an ambassador, maybe they'll make him one.

But seriously, how does it sound sane to address foreign government officials (much less ones from important trading partners right on the border) as if they are is inferiors?

It's too bad that BO's ratings are actually dropping. Other than that, it was a great theory.

It's too bad that BO's ratings are actually dropping. Other than that, it was a great theory.

Trouble is KO's ratings are dropping too after his recent spurt (in April he dropped to #20 from #17.) Yes BO is down from his all time highs but that doesn't mean much. BO would still have to lose an audience the size of KO's entire audience before he could even tie with the second place show (Hannity and Colmes.) [link to www.mediabistro.com]

And I know ratings don't mean quality (unless they're poor ratings from a show that supports are agenda.)

      ---"free publicity"---

Pointing out O'Reilly's lies is not "publicity". Anyone who enjoys immersing themselves in an hour of falsehoods, smears, and hypocricy already knows about O'Reilly's program. Furthermore, the "publicity" certainly isn't helping O'Reilly's (increasingly diminishing) ratings.

The alternative to not casting sunshine on O'Reilly's behavior is doing nothing and letting him get off scot-free, as he did for years. That is no longer an option.

        --"Hate speech isnt working"--

On the contrary, by citing O'Reilly and Hannity as #1 and #2, you've shown that hate talk --their specialties-- does draw in the right-wing viewers who wallow in that sort of entertainment.

Kudos to Olbermann for fighting the good fight.

I know, O'Reilly really wanted terrorists to attack SF.

,,,when all Olbermann does is correct O'Reilly when he's wrong, expose his ridiculous logic, and point out his pompous generalizations?

Can you think of a method with more 'class to beat O'Reilly'? And do you think that rating numbers, taken out of context, really reflect anything about what anyone says, or doesn't say, about O'Reilly?

If you were really impartial, you probably wouldn't call him "Olby", so you should be direct about it instead of throwing out a lot of irrelevant ratings.
