Olbermann named O'Reilly "Worst Person in the World" for claiming "no far-right person" would appear on cover of Time

May 26, 2006 1:23 pm ET

Keith Olbermann named Fox News host Bill O'Reilly the winner of his nightly "Worst Person in the World" award for O'Reilly's false claim that "no far-right person in this country" is "going to get on the cover of Time magazine." As Media Matters for America noted, Time has featured a number of right-wing pundits including Ann Coulter, whom O'Reilly explicitly compared to Dixie Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines: "[I]f you were going to make an example of somebody who takes rhetoric to the extreme, Ann Coulter would be probably your best right-wing shot."

On the May 26 edition of MSNBC's Countdown, host Keith Olbermann named Fox News host Bill O'Reilly the winner of his nightly "Worst Person in the World" award for O'Reilly's false claim that "no far-right person in this country" is "going to get on the cover of Time magazine," a claim O'Reilly made on the May 22 edition of The Radio Factor. O'Reilly's comment came in response to Time's May 29 edition, which featured the country music trio the Dixie Chicks on its cover -- a band O'Reilly described as "far left." As Media Matters for America noted, Time has featured a number of right-wing pundits, including Ann Coulter, whom O'Reilly explicitly compared to Dixie Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines during the same edition of the Factor, saying: "[I]f you were going to make an example of somebody who takes rhetoric to the extreme, Ann Coulter would be probably your best right-wing shot."

Olbermann stated: "Uh, Bill, what about when Ann Coulter was on the cover of Time magazine? Unless that was just some guy who looked like Ann Coulter." O'Reilly, whom Olbermann frequently names "Worst Person in the World," most recently received the award on May 22 after O'Reilly threatened a boycott of Mexico.

From the May 26 edition of MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann:

OLBERMANN: But the winner -- what a streak. This is like Cal Ripken now. After unsuccessfully trying to kiss the butt of Natalie Maines and Dixie Chicks, Bill O is back on the warpath against them, ranting that the band is "far left" and, quote, "No far-right person in this country is going to get the cover of Time magazine, as the Dixie Chicks are this week. There's not a far-right person in this country going to get on the cover of Time magazine, not going to happen."

Uh, Bill, what about when Ann Coulter was on the cover of Time magazine? Unless that was just some guy who looked like Ann Coulter.

Bill O'Reilly, today's "Worst Person in the World."

You can't finesse the fact that Coulter was on the cover. I remember all the far-left types canceled their subscriptions over that one in a show of solidarity. It really crushed Time Warner. Bill must have had a senior moment there.

He'll probably blame the "far-left smear merchant websites" for disorting him.

The World's leading far-right person has been on the cover of Time Magazine 5 times.

Osama Bin Laden has been on the cover of Time Magazine 5 times. You can look it up.

Jerry Falwell has been on the cover of Time Magazine. So has Pat Robertson. You can look that up, too.

2004: Bush (6 times), Ronald Reagan, Condeleeza Rice.

2003: Bush (5 times), Cheney, Dennis Hastert, Ronald Reagan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Donald Rumsfeld, a collage that features Kark Rove and John Ashcroft.

        Jesus Christ was far right?

I really don't think so. We know he wasn't political, but it's hard for me to think of him as a staunch conservative.

Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

include Graham, Arnold, Lieberman, or McCain among the far right, either.

But he is another person that O'Really would never expect to see on the cover of Time.

Should Olbermann the hatemonger name himself "Worst Person in the World"?

Olbermann, Blog Falsely Smear Matt Drudge Posted by Dave Pierre on May 25, 2006 - 14:06. On May 22, 2006, Matt Drudge posted an item that said, "Burn: Gore & entourage took 5 cars to travel the 500 yards from hotel to screening of pic in Cannes ..." Keith Olbermann and blog Think Progress jumped on Drudge, claiming that the story was false. Olbermann went as far as to say that Drudge is a "long-time schmuck" and was again "making stuff up" (via Expose the Left).

As it turns out, according to this Reuters "Notebook" report about Gore/Cannes, it appears Drudge's original claim was well founded. From Reuters :

Gore and his team were seen driving the 500 metres or so from a hotel to the Cannes festival headquarters in several cars. The representative said that arriving at events like photocalls and news conferences in cars was normal practice in Cannes. And Gore walked the shorter distance from another hotel to the festival for the movie's screening.

Although they may not have walked to the screening, it appears that Gore and company did in fact take cars to the Cannes festival headquarters. The difference is minimal. The problem is that Olbermann and Think Progress left their audience with the false impression that Drudge made up the story out of whole cloth.

The Reuters report shows that Drudge has solid support for his post.

If he were a true progressive, why doesnt he name Imus Worst Person in the World for saying that Senator Clinton is worse than Osama bin Laden?

      That is hateful.

Olbermann is a corporate shmuck , helping out MSNBC .

It seems to me that Falafel Bill is on quite a streak of despicability. He's received practically every "Worst Person" award the past two weeks. In fact, on Wednesday, KO got Stewie (from Family Guy) to add a little P.S. to O'Reilly's nomination that night.

Coulter's head was put onto someone else's body. And Pete: John McCain and Jesus Christ are FAR right??? No. None of the people you mention are far right. Some are right, yes, but not FAR-right. And you missed Jerry Falwell, who is definitely far-right. And John McCain and Arnold Schwarzenegger are both all over the map, sometimes left, sometimes right, and sometimes out there in a totally different direction altogether.

for Bull OhReally? this week. Olderman appears either to be so obsessed with BullyBoy that he is blind to what is happening or as I pose before, it is merely a conspiracy between the two of them to drive up ratings.

When Olberman expressed his doubts about Drudge's report (like Drudge hasn't been wrong before) you say:

      "Olbermann lied"

Then when it becomes obvious the actual account is debatable either way, you equivocate and say:

      "The difference is minimal"

If Olberman was lying then so are you.

      It wouldn't work.

In order to know when Bill O'Reilly is telling a whopper, the audience needs to be reasonably informed. To be reasonably informed, one must pay attention.

So, if one were to down a drink every time BillO lied, one would be drunk halfway through his program. One cannot remain reasonably informed if drunk.

It wouldn't work. It would only serve to make progressives as ignorant and sloppy as the rightwing, drunk and stupid.

The audience would be drunk before O'Reilly finished his first paragraph.
