Matthews gushes over Lott: "[A] great, old-fashioned conservative" who "just want[s] peace and America to prevail"

On the July 19 edition of MSNBC's Hardball, host Chris Matthews offered to "shine ... up" Sen. Trent Lott (R-MS), calling him "a great, old-fashioned conservative" who doesn't have "any special angles" on the current conflict in the Middle East, but "just want[s] peace and America to prevail." Matthews's solo interview of Lott focused on the current clash between Israel and Hezbollah forces in Lebanon. Matthews did not conduct a solo interview of a liberal on the program.

As Media Matters for America noted, on the June 6 edition of Hardball, Matthews also told Lott: "I'm getting to like you too much." Matthews has used similarly effusive language to praise other Republicans, such as President Bush (here, here, here, here, and here), Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) (here, here, and here), former Bush administration Commerce Secretary Donald L. Evans, House Majority Leader John Boehner (R-OH), Rep. Brian Bilbray (R-CA), and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R).

From the July 19 edition of MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews:

MATTHEWS: Welcome back to Hardball. Will the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah stop within one more week? Can Lebanon crack down on Hezbollah units within its borders? And can George Bush, the president, help broker the peace?

Here to dig into it, especially the politics, globally and locally, Mississippi Senator Trent Lott. Senator Trent, let me shine you up first. You are a great, old-fashioned conservative. You don't have any special angles in these regions, you just want peace and America to prevail. What can he do? Is he doing the right thing or are we holding back too much over there, the president?

would that be the good old fashioned party of segregation? Strom and Trent, cut from the same cloth.

Matthews needs to rename his show as it resembles more of a Republican lovefest than hardnosed journalism.

Actually Tweedy's nose is hard and brown. When I was in school we used the term "sycophant"

Noun 1. sycophant - a person who tries to please someone in order to gain a personal advantage crawler, toady, lackey apple polisher, ass-kisser, bootlicker, fawner, groveler, groveller, truckler - someone who humbles himself as a sign of respect; who behaves as if he had no self-respect adulator, flatterer - a person who uses flattery goody-goody - a person who behaves extremely well in order to please a superior

Chris certainly fills the order here!

Trent Lott is, in fact, an old-fashioned conservative... or at least as close to one as you'll find nowadays. But it does annoy the hell out of me the way Matthews fawns over him.

Matthews is a tortured soul -- it's written all over his face. He's got a Daddy complex or something, but whatever it is, he migt as well fellate his GOP guests on air instead of boring his audience with his unseemly and distasteful gushing.

As to his fawning over Trent Lott, I agree with an earlier poster -- these day's Trent's sort of what's left of the genuine Conservatives in the GOP. Lott's not especially bright, perhaps, but I don't believe he's much of a hater. Of course, he may have learned something about humility after Bush and Frist dirty-dealt him.

Just listening to MSNBC on satrad so I'm not sure there is video to accompany the discussion. Chris Jensen is talking to Chris Matthews. Matthews repeatedly calls Bush "frat boy" because of something they've both just seen. He refers to Bush making unscripted comments at a meal, talking with his mouth open and referring to PM Blair as just Blair. Sounded as though the rosy-tint is wearing off Matthews glasses. He also talked about running the clip

Chris "the stuff they use to fertilize the cotton fields with" Matthews' show should be renamed "Cottonball." Hard hitting questions certainly are not his forte. I think his agenda is, he wants to be the next Republican Presidential Press Secratary.

As far as Trent Lott is concerned, his KKK robes are in his closet ready to go, either to the next KKK meeting or the next lynching party. He's already confirmed that. Maybe he should consider running for the next Grand Dragon of the KKK if he doesn't get re-elected.

Yeah, that's going to be some porch party. I bet Brownie isn't invited.

I live in Mississppi, and I'm no fan of Trent Lott, but I do feel very bad for him about his house. I saw the destruction in that area and it's heartbreaking. That house had been in his family for years, too, and he's not particularly wealthy like a lot of senators are.

Amusingly for a guy from the anti-trial lawyer, pro-"tort reform" party, Trent's suing his insurance company about covering the hurricane damage. His attorney? Mississippi uber-trial lawyer (and fellow Ole Miss alum) "Dickie" Scruggs, who made a fortune suing tobacco companies. Adding to the irony: Dickie is Trent's brother-in-law. Small state.

I like the old houses along the shore. Whenever one gets torn down or washed away, it's usually replaced by something with very little character. I'm not a fan of Trent's either, but always feel for anyone who loses a home. I don't even mind that my flood insurance premium has gone up to help pay for the homes lost in last summers hurricanes.

In an above post someone said Hutchinson should run for pres. She was also a former cheerleader. I am seeing a pattern here.

I guess the reason I never became a politicion is that I was always on the field. I should have been a cheerleader. I guess it is the perfect launching pad for warmongers in general.

I suppose the game doesn't look so hard or rough from the sidelines.

Not possible, Chris was born on the other side of Mason-Dixon. Besides he's Catholic from Philadelphia and attended Holy Cross which hardly fits the NeoCon template. You "really" have to be a "good ole boy" to fit the mold. He would do well with the current administration as another "Uncle Tom" like Colin Powell and Condi Rice. GW would say "we have no racial agenda here", "look, we have our token African Americans and token Catholics."

Bush is the guy who doesn't approve of murder. He's also the guy who, when he was governor of Texa,s cut the time in half, that the governor usually set aside to reconsider capital punishment sentences. I think the former governors would spend one hour weighing the life of a condemned person, but Georgie Boy cut it down to a half hour. What a humanitarian!

That is me in a nutshell. I actually have "Southern Conservative Republican" tattooed on my chest, right above the Rebel flag.

No, see, the joke was, it would be funny if Helen Thomas thanked Tony Snow for the "Klan view" because the Klan is a terrorist group that is associated with his heritage (Southern), and Snow had dickishly thanked Thomas for the "Hezbollah view," which cleverly (in his mind, probably) linked his nemesis with a terrorist group that is associated with her heritage (Lebanese). Do you see how I was oh-so-subtly calling Snow a jerk for the "Hezbollah view" comment?

I've got to make my jokes more obvious.

divided between Union and the Confederacy. Just because KFC features a kindly, old man in a white suit and string tie doesn't make Kentucky the South.

So Snow ain't exclusively ours you "Northerns" or whatever get to claim him too. I have enough heritage issues being a Southern I don't need "Agent Snowjob". Where he went to college was certainly in the South but colleges in every state turn out cretins every graduating class.

Actually, I have in recent years started to miss the Trent Lott conservative. At least they stood for something that had the veneer of a rational civilization to it. Not like the NeoCon crowd. All pundits, all screaming, all war all the time. When I turn on my TV I feel like I am in the movie version of "1984" with John Hurt in it. Huddling off to the side of the big screen hoping someone does not catch me thinking. Because to paraphrase Douglas Adams, in some place in the universe that is a capital offense.

You are right, however Lincoln declared Kentucky as a slave state. Check your history books.

There is a paradox here in that Berea, Kentucky was a marshalling point for African Americans who wanted to fight for the Union. Lincoln likje Washington before him did not want African Americans in the Union Army. Unfortunately Lee was kicking ass on the Union Armies. Lincoln again like Washington had to do a turn about and let African Americans fight for Union. This was one of the major pivotal points for Union in the Civil War.

Another interesting fact that Berea, Kentucky was one of way points in the Underground Rail Road.
