Noting that Beck was "making fun of blind people," Carlson handed Beck "award" for "maybe the most outrageous thing said recently on TV"

On the August 28 edition of MSNBC's Tucker, host Tucker Carlson noted that nationally syndicated radio host Glenn Beck was recently "making fun of blind people," as Media Matters for America documented on August 25. On the August 24 edition of his CNN Headline News program, Beck waved his hands about, presumably to mimic the actions of a frustrated blind person, and then said, "Just to piss them [blind people] off, I'm going to put in Braille on the coffee pot. ... 'Pot is hot.' " Carlson said Beck "gets the award today for maybe the most outrageous thing said recently on TV."

As Media Matters has documented, Beck has previously claimed that one reason different races are "afraid to hang out with each other" is that "we're afraid ... somebody's gonna sic the NAACP on us, or somebody's gonna sic an attorney on us." He has also mocked the names of Egyptians students, used mock commercials to make fun of Mexican immigrants, and asked if "anybody really care[s]" if Shanghai were flooded by seawater because of global warming.

From the August 28 edition of MSNBC's Tucker:

CARLSON: And, finally, Glenn Beck, over on CNN Headline News, who gets the award today for maybe the most outrageous thing said recently on TV. Listen for yourself.

BECK [video clip]: I work at Radio City in midtown Manhattan, and up by the doors, you know, like where the -- you know -- the office kitchen is, in Braille, on the wall, it says "kitchen." You'd have to -- a blind person would have to be feeling all of the walls to find "kitchen." Just to [expletive deleted] them off, I'm going to put in Braille on the coffee pot -- I'm going to put, "Pot is hot."

CARLSON: Yes, he is making fun of blind people. Amazing.

      Keith Olbermann's "mini-me"?

He's giving out Awards now too?

Well, copycatting Olbermann's Award giving idea or not, Beck DESERVES this award.

Glenn Beck is a jerk but Tucker Carlson is a moron. I cant take anything this jerk says seriously. MMFA should be ashamed to even remotely support someone who spews hate on almost a daily basis toward Senator Clinton.

On another thread today, you suggested that because Krugman agreed with Buchanan that Media Matters should not point out a distortion from him.

Here you say that even though Tucker Carlson made a very valid point, Media Matters can't acknowledge it because you dislike Carlson?

        It doesn't work that way.

An Ad Hominem Argument is a logical fallacy. It is about WHAT is said not WHO is saying it. The fact Carleson is right about this doesnt make him right about everything nor is it in some way glorifying him. Most of us knew he might be right once in a while. This is the kind of black/white thinking I keep criticising the rightwing for. I understand you are not a rightwinger but its still that kind of thinking. Just because someone says something right once doesnt make him right about everything nor does the fact he is wrong often make him wrong about everything. That is the way of the world

It's sad. Not too long ago, if a person said something bigoted, hateful, imflammatory, or offensive on television, it would be the end of their career. The networks would terminate them because they did not want to be associated with such hate. Now, it is perfectly acceptable.

Instead of becoming more tolerant of other people, it appears that our society prefers to be more tolerant of hate. Under our current leaders, we are regressing back to the bad-old-days when hate, bigotry, and intolerance were accepted, promoted, and encouraged.

People who strive to be "politically correct", ie POLITE TO THOSE DIFFERENT THAN US, are now considered to be wussified wacky leftists. Being "politically incorrect" is part of the Conservative agenda. Do conservatives now teach their kids to make fun of fat or ugly kids to their faces? How far will they take their "anti-political correctness"? Kudos to Carlson. He does sometimes criticize the right, as does Scarborough. Good for them.

        =====

I consider Carlson a lightweight in the world of political commentators/hosts , BUT at least the guy [who as far as I know is STILL a Republican/Conservative] doesn't just cough up GOP talking points. IF he agrees with Republicans on an issue he says so, IF not, he's apparently got the balls to OPPOSE them.

So I guess you could say this guy STANDS on his OWN two feet.

But seriously, I ran into Tucker recently (friend of a friend-type deal) and he seemed like a nice guy. He actually sung part of a Fall Out Boy song at one point. No, I'm not kidding. Yes, I did laugh. I told him he was an "emo ***" and he took it well.

My take on Tucker is that he is not very bright, and he is conservative but has some integrity. He called Bush on mimicing the woman death row inmate (Karla Faye Tucker) begging for her life at a time when he was himself a Bush supporter because he was appalled. He will take his own to task when HE thinks they deserve it.

...However, I don't think Carlson is very bright and, honestly, after seeing/hearing how the game works... it appears to me to be a half-hearted exclamation point on another lame 'outrageous' claim made by Beck...by a fellow 'conservative'. Not only does it underscore Beck's original lame statement, it's a second-hand underscore for Carlson (who gets to retell it...)

Perhaps, that's too harsh. And, I'm sure one can make the same claim about MMFA or Olberman. But, then again... MMFA's and Olberman's self-proclaimed job is to expose/denegrate right-wing media bias. I don't believe Carlson's words are even close to that.

Tucker Carlson is basically hedging his bets. He was a total conservative whore up until maybe 2004, when he opportunistically disavowed himself from the Iraq War. He, like Joe Scarborough, is trying to slither out of his wrongdoing in supporting George Bush by now criticizing George Bush and other conservatives and Republicans at least occasionally, if not regularly. He is sad. Don't trust him or Scarborough or any of the other opportunists who are now distancing themselves from the disaster known as George Bush. They are at least partially responsible for George Bush being President and for the mess we are in today because of George Bush. He also copies Keith Olbermann. He can't even come up with something original. And he's a dork.

Those who live glass houses shouldn't throw stones. I'm waiting for Glenn Beck to make fun of people with cerebral palsy. He should bring his daughter on the air and make fun of her. I wouldn't be surprised if he did that. You would think that someone with a daughter who has cerebral palsy would be more sensitive. Glenn Beck loves to talk about his daughter with cerebral palsy every five minutes and cry on the air. Then he also likes to make fun of people and make mean-spirited comments on the air. He makes racially controversial comments, calls people affected by Hurricane Katrina "scumbags", makes fun of blind people, calls Jimmy Carter "a waste of skin", says that he is "thinking about killing Michael Moore", and, of course, as usual and as always, continues to make his outrageously false whoring statements for George Bush and the Republican Party and consvervatives. He even whored--and of course lied--for George Bush after Bush vetoed the stem cell bill a few weeks ago. Media Matters for America pointed this out. This coming from a man whose daughter has a severe medical condition. He tries to put on a bad-ass persona and a loving father persona practically at the same time. He tries to have it both ways. He is obviously a fraud.

Gee, what a shock. Being crude, patronizing, self important, cold blooded, and a general smartass dick is what Beck does best. I guess that’s typically what passes for clever with the righties and CNN brass . To put it in very simple media cultural terms this country went from being the Fonz, a guy everyone wanted to be like to Biff Tannen, the blond asshole bully in “Back To The Future”. Come to think of it Beck even looks kinda like that creep.

I find it amazing (ok, not amazing...what's the word I'm looking for....Oh Yea, "expected") that you people can not see the point Beck was making. Tucker surprised me too on this. The point being that the braille plate that was supposed to help the blind find the kitchen was not very blind friendly. It would have been difficult for a blind person to find. The comment about the braille on the coffee pot was making the point that puting the message in the worst possible place for blind people would fit right in with the way these braille signs are place at times...like the one he was talking about for the kitchen. You people must be a lot of fun at parties.

The braille plates are put in a standard position so they can be found easily. The coffeepot comment was cruel. He said he would put in braille on a coffeepot pot HOT: OW, the ludicrous point being that blind people would be so stupid they would read braille on a hot coffeepot as if they couldnt feel the heat. No DICE. Beck was being an insensative CLOD. Cruel and ignorant are his specialities.

to look like he's a tolerant person who wouldn't even think of insulting blind people. Tell me another one.

Watch this clip from a year and a half ago on CNN where he is speaking to a member of the Canadian Parliament where all he does is insult Canada left and right just for the sake of insulting Canada and trying to have fun at Carolyn Parrish's expense. I'm glad she talked back to him and kept her cool. You can tell from the tone of Carlson's voice that he has no respect for Canadians and for Parrish.
