Olbermann named Savage "Worst Person" runner-up for saying Senate is "more vicious and more histrionic ... because women have been injected into" it

On the September 14 edition of MSNBC's Countdown, host Keith Olbermann named nationally syndicated radio host Michael Savage the runner-up for his nightly "Worst Person in the World" for claiming, as Media Matters for America noted, the U.S. Senate is "more vicious and more histrionic than ever, specifically because women have been injected into" it. Olbermann then joked, "Bulletin to Mr. Weiner Savage, there have been women in the U.S. Senate since 1922. Not that you'd need to know stuff like that or anything."

Savage, who has been a frequent recipient of Olbermann's "Worst Person in the World" award, most recently received the runner-up spot for claiming that the "American left" are "the Nazis of our time."

From the September 14 edition of MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann:

OLBERMANN: That's next, but time first for Countdown's latest list of nominees for "Worst Person in the World."

Hey listen, last time I checked Amazon, they're selling this for $13.77, all right? I'm going on the Today show in the morning. Demand will go up, prices will go up just like gas. You buy a thousand copies, you could make some serious money -- or not. I'm not [CNBC host] Jim Cramer out here.

The bronze tonight goes to Timothy Kachelmeier of Glenbeulah, Michigan [sic: Wisconsin]. Glenbeulah is my home. A 40-year-old man, his 17-year-old son Alexander wanted to use his cell phone, kid busts into dad's bedroom looking for the phone then tries to go into dad's car looking for the phone, whereupon dad allegedly sprays him in the face with bear repellent.

Wait, Mr. Kachelmeier, your son is a bear?

Our runner-up, Michael Savage. Wagged that cheap wig of his and announced that the U.S. Senate is now, quote, "more vicious and more histrionic then ever, specifically because women have been injected into it." Bulletin to Mr. Weiner Savage, there have been women in the U.S. Senate since 1922. Not that you'd need to know stuff like that or anything.

But, our winner tonight, Morgan Wilkins, hired by the College Republican National Committee to recruit students into its membership. Her plan at the University of Michigan, a tag-like game in which contestants are invited to "catch an illegal immigrant." And another called "fun with guns" in which they're encouraged to test their marksmanship by firing at cardboard cutouts of Hillary Clinton and John Kerry. You call it recruitment, the rest of us would call it inducement to assassination. Morgan Wilkins, today's "Worst Person in the World."

I follow most of MMFA, but (and this is an honest question), why does MMFA post these "Olbermann names ____ worst person in the world..." type posts? Didn't MMFA already have a thread on this same topic? So what point does this serve? Thanks in advance.

You gotta ADMIT it's REDUNDANT. Everyone that wanted to comment on Savage PROBABLY already did.

Makes one WONDER if Olbermann is on MMFA's payroll? OR if Keith comes HERE daily to get his material. [Looks over all the THREADS, picks his favorite]

BUT this is MMFA website so they can do whatever they'd like.

Has Keith EVER named a LIBERAL as Worst Person In The World? Just wondering since everyone's so OBSESSED with Couric's Free Speech Segment having not featured a Liberal yet. Oh wait, Liberals are GOOD, Conservatives are BAD...how'd I forget that ;-)

BTW Did he Keith NAME himself Worst Person for that Nazi salute he gave? LOL.

but I'm guessing Olbermann admits he's a liberal.

All we need is for CBS to call it the "conservative speech" segment and for Fox News to drop the "fair and balanced" slogan. No need to change anyone's content.

I don't ever remember reading OR hearing anywhere that Olbermann ADMITS to being a Liberal. Though IF I were to wager a bet, I'd say that he is. IF & WHEN he admits that he's indeed a Liberal then we should EXPECT Fox to drop it's Fair & Balanced B.S and ADMIT they are a Conservative Network. Don't hold your breath for either ANNOUNCEMENT ;-)

As far as CBS goes, there's been ONLY 8 SEGMENTS. Aside from Limbaugh (Hard-Core Right) and Rudy (Lukewarm Conservative)...NONE of the OTHER guests have come on and REPRESENTED any ideology. CBS appears, thus far, to have FOCUSED on particular topics for their guests to speak on. NOT what party OR ideology they are. IF after a FEW more segments, NO Liberal/Progressive appears then you've got a REASON to be suspicious.

I did hear him admit it on ESPN radio a couple days ago. But if his show is being presented as play-it-straight news, then you win the argument that he needs to name prominent liberals Worst Person every now and then.

(Though it might be one of those "I'll stop it when O'Reilly stops it" type deals.)

Maybe you can help me think of who could have won it in the past few weeks. Liberals aren't perfect, but it starts to look that way when conservative accusations always fall apart on inspection.

Burger, the one caught stealing documents from the National Archives, complained to ABC about his portrayal in their 9-11 movie, like he was just some honest citizen.

This whole "worst in the world" seems childish to me anyway, like a kid complaining he has the worst parents in the world because they won't do something (give him ice cream, a cell phone, whatever).

Believe it or not, one time Olbermann named worst in the world the person who accidently took his luggage from the carrousel after a plane flight. Talk about being childish and self-centered... I want to joke about him complaining about someone in a check-out line in front of him with 7 items where there is a 6-item limit, but I am afraid he may actually have complained about that!

Took PHOTOCOPIES of documents from the National Archives, not the documents themselves. I know this and i'm not even a yank!! Maybe if you went and found out the true story instead of just believing the talking points put out by right wing liars on tv and radio you would stop youself making comments that are false and probably defametory.

                    Just an idea!! :-)

I watched Bill Maher's show the other night. He said he had been contacted for CBS' free speech segment but he told them he wanted to choose the topic. Apparently they agreed to this until he told them he wanted to speak about religion in America, he said that was apparently a deal breaker and they no longer wanted him for the segment.

Didn't we already have the same question asked 150 times by other right-wingers on 150 other threads? As these wingers are so fond of lecturing (but not actually practicing), 'if you don't like it, don't read it.'

Many rightwingers try to blow off relevant topics of discussion by saying that Media Matters should not be covering that particular topic.

They say that it's inappropriate for a number of reasons.

I have seen numerous Media Matters supporters trash those arguments like Dave did above.

MMFA web traffic is now about half of what it was at its peak around January of this year:

        [link to www.alexa.com]

Game shows in decline typically start having celebrity contestants in an attempt for more viewers.

MMFA is shifting toward celebrities (Olbermann, Coulter, O'Reilly, etc.) rather than straight news stories, such as in newspapers.

Also, Brock from MMFA regularly appears on Olbermann's show, and I think this is a case of one hand washing the other. They are trying to boost each others ratings/traffic.

I suppose they might want to show that someone in the media is on their side, but it's not really their stated mission or goal. Whatever. Cheers.
