Fox's Cameron: NY Times "essentially hoping to demoralize Republicans" to reduce their turnout

On the October 17 edition of Fox News Live, Fox News chief political correspondent Carl Cameron asserted that an October 16 New York Times report, indicating that Republican party officials have said they "are moving to reduce financial support" for Sen. Mike DeWine's (R-OH) re-election campaign in order to "divert party money to other embattled Republican senators," demonstrates that "The New York Times and Democrats are essentially hoping to demoralize Republicans and take away the energy for the base that Republicans think will protect their majorities."

As Media Matters for America has documented, Fox News hosts and guests have frequently attacked The New York Times over its news reporting.

From the October 17 edition of Fox News Live:

BILL HEMMER (anchor): Ohio is a key state in this crucial election, but The New York Times claims the Republican Party has written off that state as a hopeless cause, leaving the incumbent senator, Mike DeWine, to twist in the wind. But Republicans say that's not the case, the story is not true, and now Senator DeWine sets the record straight. From Ohio, Carl Cameron is back in the Buckeye state, live in Dayton. What do you say, Carl?

CAMERON: Well, Bill, there's just an awful lot of buzz going on in Ohio, as well as across the country, about what exactly the Republican strategy is to maintain the Senate majority. Here in Ohio, the Democratic challenger, Congressman Sherrod Brown from Cleveland, who's been in the Congress for 14 years, has jumped out to a significant lead. The latest Quinnipiac poll says that he is up a dozen points; and a CBS News/New York Times poll that is set to come out later this evening is said, according to folks on the campaigns, to show that Mr. Brown is up 14 points.

All of this in the wake of an article on the front page of The New York Times yesterday that suggested that the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the group of Senate Republicans who amass their money to try to elect Republicans to the U.S. Senate, had pulled the plug on advertising and support for Mr. DeWine in Ohio, effectively throwing him overboard, thinking that his race was a lost cause to Mr. Brown. That prompted tremendous denials from Republicans, who moved aggressively yesterday, holding teleconference calls and reaching out to reporters to say, "Not true, not true." And this morning when we talked to Senator DeWine, the incumbent Republican, a two-termer, who's in this tough, tough race, he was adamant, saying that the Republican Party is behind him and ultimately he believes he's going to win.

[...]

CAMERON: And the ground game for Republicans could salvage their protection of both the Senate majority, and potentially in the House as well. It's going to take a tremendous amount of money and work -- that's what the Republicans are gearing up for right now, while The New York Times and Democrats are essentially hoping to demoralize Republicans and take away the energy for the base that Republicans think will protect their majorities.

The real causes for demoralization this election are runaway spending, open borders, the Iraq War mess............among others. Don't blame the NY Times or anyone else. The Republicans and Bush own this one.

You missed a few things though including stagnant wages, runaway healthcare costs, energy independence and energy costs, global warming and pollution, environmental degradation, domestic spying, corruption, privatizing Social Security and I am sure a few other things I have forgot to list.

Many Americans finally have woken up to the tactics of the right.

        Lie about your successes.

        Lie about your opponents' foibles.

        Lie about your opponents' successes.

Lie about your failures and shortcomings.

Many Americans are seeing the light. They reject the lies and distortions, and when you look, fairly, at the two parties, there is only one choice that can be made. That choice would be to support the Democrats and reject the Republicans.

They did it to themselves, and I could hardly be happier. But, I could be happier if they had straightened out their act so that our nation would not have been so divided and bitter. I could only be happier if they were willing to do what they could to fix Iraq now, instead of having to wait until after the election because it might hurt them politically. I could only be happier if they would stop blaming others unfairly.

This waste of human flesh was suspended in 2004 for putting a story out on John Kerry that had fake quotes of Kerry talking about his manicure and his cuticles. He was suspended for that. FOX NEWS probably did not even want to suspend him--they probably congratulated him for doing that. He was also caught on camera joking with Bush in 2000 and talking about his wife worked for Bush and how she loved it and liked Bush as well.

Actually, Cameron wasn't suspended for his little Kerry-stunt. Fox News said he was reprimanded, but didn't specify exactly what the reprimand entailed. He's since been actually promoted. Employees at Fox News get away with things that would get most people fired at any reputable news organization. Could you imagine if any of the anchors at the big three networks were as opinionated as Brit Hume is?

I don't see the NYT as some wholesome and trusty news source at times (eg Judith Miller et al) but to think that one newspaper holds that much importance that it can turn an election...

I take it "New York Times" is another neo-con code word?

I hear you Tommy - not that it matters but even though we are often times at odds with issues discussed on here I'd never call you a troll - Hell, I know from some of my past posts doing some bomb throwing i'd probably fall in that category anyway.

Repugs like to use the New York Times as shorthand for the "Liberal Media" myth which they have carefully fabricated over the past 25 years or so. What they don't acknowledge is that all of the "Liberal" newspapers put together don't have a tenth of the impact that Conservative talk radio does.

A troll or not to troll, that's the question right? Actually, my biggest problem is engaging the few people on this site that do call me that. I need to stop doing that for it is just a waste of time.

There are plenty of thoughtful people who don't share my opinions, like yourself, that I respect, to discuss issues with - and leaving the other's behind. Gotta work on that!

...starting to spread. I just hear an audio clip online where Hannity basically was imploring his listeners to take matters in their own hands and they have no one to blame but themselves if the Republicans lose control of the house.

Yes, kids the fear is palpable and spreading among the right wingers. It will get worse as we get closer to Nov 7th...judgement day for Bush and the Republican party.

If cons stay away from the polls in mass, it will be because of their disgust for the anti-American, fascist turn their party has made over the last six years. The NY Times will have nothing to do with it.

He can't imagine reporting on a story for nonidealogical purposes. His stories are all part of a larger Republican spin, done for the purpose of frightening & cajoling people into supporting the neocon agenda. That journalists might report something just because it's true is beyond him.

Wow Fox is expert at playing the Republican shell game. Turn an embarassment like DeWine absolutely blowing this election and folding up like and accordian (or like the Arizon Cardinals have done a million times) and instead divert attention away from the real story to attack the NYT. Notice Cameron arrangement of NYT and Democrats right next to each other in the sentence. Wow he's devilish. Botoom line though, DeWine is getting pummeled in a former red state. Ouch!.

I've never been called a Nazi before, but I guess there's a first time for everything. A troll can have many different definitions. It is usually someone who posts opposing views on a website, views that go against a lot or most of the people there, and they may even cause trouble as well. Many times, they post things that are stupid, dishonest, or just dont make any sense at all. Tommy does that often, although lately he seems to have been disgusted with the criminal Bush regime as well, so I give him credit for that, if it is true. Tommy, I would not all mind discussing in a conversation with you, even if much or all of what you say is not true and desperate.

      THANK YOU. njguy93@yahoo.com

As long as my disguist with Bush continues, then I will be warmly welcomed and shed the troll label. However, if I begin to show sides of wavering and don't tow the leftist line that 99% of posters here do, well, then the troll label quickly returns.

        Wow, I am so scared.

are coming out of the woodwork. You can all write and discuss the implosion of the Republican Party on a daily basis. But you must the real cause of this mystery demoralization is the fault of President Bill Clinton. It is so simple. Mr. Clinton and his fellow Democrats who control the White House and Congress have developed this conspiracy....wait a minute----Clinton isn't the President and the Dems have no control....SORRY, must be an internal Repub problem.
