Fox News guest Simmons claimed stadium terror hoax is "the perfect example" of "how vital" the detainee bill and warrantless domestic spying program are

Moments after host Neil Cavuto noted that the FBI had officially determined that a purported terrorist plot to attack seven NFL stadiums was a "hoax," former CIA agent Wayne Simmons cited the fake plot as "the perfect example of the president's Military Commissions Act of 2006 and the NSA [National Security Agency] terrorist eavesdropping program, how vital they are." Simmons's comment came on the October 19 edition of Fox News' Your World, where he appeared with Frank Gaffney, founder and president of the conservative Center for Security Policy. Gaffney responded to Simmons's statement by saying that he "hope[d]" the fake plot would convince Americans that terrorists are "gunning for us not just in a place like Iraq, but truly worldwide," while Cavuto agreed that "[w]e dodged a bullet here, or presumably a hoaxed bullet."

As the Associated Press reported on October 19, "The threat, dated Oct. 12, appeared on a Web site, The Friend Society, that links to various online forums and off-color cartoons. Its author, identified in the message as 'javness,' said trucks would deliver radiological bombs Sunday to stadiums in New York, Miami, Atlanta, Seattle, Houston, Cleveland and Oakland, Calif., and that Osama bin Laden would claim responsibility."

From the October 19 edition of Fox News' Your World with Neil Cavuto:

CAVUTO: The FBI confirming that football-stadium threat, apparently a hoax. The agency making that determination after questioning a young man connected to the Web threat, which warned of a dirty-bomb attack on seven U.S. stadiums this weekend. Intelligence officials never giving it any credibility, but it does raise this question: Is this the kind of target that Al Qaeda will opt for next time -- Main Street instead of Wall Street? Reaction now from Frank Gaffney, the president Center for Security Policy, and former CIA operative Wayne Simmons. Frank, what do you think, that this kind of thing is where they want to go?

GAFFNEY: I think that the people that we're really concerned about, and evidently that wasn't the case with this individual, but the people we're really concerned about -- I call them Islamofascists -- people who adhere to this ideology who believe they need to triumph politically, not just in a theological sense, are determined to kill as many of us as they can. They' re trying to do it wholesale through weapons of mass destruction, seemingly. But, a feature of the World Trade Center attack was not only an attack on Wall Street, but it, theoretically, could have killed as many as 50,000 people in those towers.

CAVUTO: Well, let me ask you about that, Wayne, that maybe because we had our sights set on financial centers or economic centers, we're missing a greater point here, this hoax not withstanding. What you make of that?

SIMMONS: All right, listen. I think Frank's absolutely right. And I think the big story here is, quite frankly, Neil, is that this is the, and I mean the perfect example of the president's Military Commissions Act of 2006 and the NSA terrorist eavesdropping program -- how vital they are. Without them, we cannot, as the president wants us to do, pre-emptively strike the terrorists. Now, had these threats proven to be credible, I would suggest to you that it would have been probably using these tools and others. So it just doesn't get any more clear of how perfect an example those programs are.

CAVUTO: You're nodding, Frank. You're nodding.

GAFFNEY: Well, I am. This is a clear case where the kind of enemy we're dealing with requires tools that enable you to try to get inside what are basically fairly disciplined and secretive cells in any way you can. The ideal way is human beings -- very hard to do. The next best thing, especially since we have largely dismantled that capability in the past decade or so -- the next best thing is to use these kinds of electronic surveillance tools and the like --

SIMMONS: Absolutely, absolutely.

GAFFNEY: -- that enable us at least to get indicators --

CAVUTO: Yeah.

GAFFNEY: -- and enable you to go after it. But, Neil, I've just got to tell you, one of the things that I hope Americans take away from this is not only that they're gunning for us, not just in a place like Iraq, but truly worldwide. But there are things that we as Americans can do to gun back to fight back --

SIMMONS: Absolutely.

GAFFNEY: -- and one of them I call "divest terror," and I think it's a very powerful tool.

CAVUTO: Wayne, real quickly. We dodged a bullet here, or presumably a hoaxed bullet, but still. Are we going to be lucky In the future?

SIMMONS: Listen, we're going to stay diligent. This is, again -- so many points here. Stay diligent, stay vigilant, work with authorities, pay attention. And hopefully, hopefully we can continue to be successful in taking these terrorists down.

CAVUTO: All right. Wayne Simmons, final word on the subject. Frank Gaffney, thank you very much.

Really it is easy to "take terrorists down" when they weren't there in the first place.

You can give me the job of taking terrorists that don't exist down I am very highly qualified for that.

      Hilarious.

That kind of logic would have sent us into a Fascist state long ago with the Cold War.

Seriously. It's like we are becoming more like facists (or terrorists) to fight them.

This attack was a hoax! And they are praising the president already for stopping this. The Military Comissions Act has nothing to do with this.

The fascist state DID start with the Cold War. The secrecy, the torture, the support for murderous regimes, CIA war crimes....it all began then.

And when the Soviet Union disappeared it became "narcoterrorism" and the War on Drugs. But that wasn't selling the fear enough. So now we got "Islamofascism" and the War on Terror.

They've been pulling this crap on us for the last 60 years.

First off:"But, Neil, I've just got to tell you, one of the things that I hope Americans take away from this is not only that they're gunning for us, not just in a place like Iraq, but truly worldwide."

Yes, idiot, I think we've known that since approximately 1993 (and yes, probably earlier), with a little reminder in 2001. And I hope rumors of Tom Cruise's homosexuality let people know that there are such things as homosexuals.

Secondly:I just love the reasoning of these guys.

"Dad, I need a rocket launcher."

      "What?"

"A couple seniors told me they were going to shoot me today, so I need to pre-emptively bomb their houses"

Later:"OK OK they didn't really threaten me, but it still shows why I need a rocket launcher, because it shows that could happen! I dodged a bullet here...sort of!"

The moral of the story is that even if it is true, there are conventional, legal ways of dealing with the threat. But the fact that we're using a hoax as evidence of anything is just beyond hilarious. This is one of the most bizarre conversations I've ever seen on television.

LOL They got the threat from a web site? And they're claiming it's proof that we need the military commisions act?

I can see it now... the president declares a PC an "enemy combatant", the CIA takes it to a black prison and waterboards it until it opens the web page with the threat posted.

If I hear the next threat was found on a porn site, I'll know the administration has completely lost its mind.

"The threat, dated Oct. 12, appeared on a Web site, The Friend Society, that links to various online forums and off-color cartoons".

Last time I looked, a search warrent was not needed to access web sites on the internet. Anyone can find this stuff at any time. So someone needs to explain why these right wing spinners think that the Military Commissions Act of 2006 and the NSA terrorist eavesdropping program was so vital in uncovering this "serious" threat to our safety.

The question we should be asking is: Did they get a search and/or arrest warrent before they picked up this pathetic jerk for his rendering session? Does anyone know?

"gunning for us not just in a place like Iraq, but truly worldwide,"

Now I'm confused. I thought the Iraq disaster was at least keeping us safe over here. I mean, the terrorists can't fight in two places at once, can they? You mean Iraq hasn't made us safer?

      Now I'm really scared!

In fact, I found this little nugget from Frank Gaffney:"In fact, were America actually to heed the siren's call ... and retreat from the Iraqi front in that war, it would simply assure that we will be fighting these enemies far closer to home and, indeed, in all likelihood here." [Syndicated columnist Frank Gaffney, Jr., Jan. 31]

        [link to redstaterebel.blogspot.com]

Same guy, it appears, although referred to as Frank Gaffney often. So earlier, he tells us we need to stay in Iraq so that we're not fighting these enemies here. But, a hoax should send the message that they're gunning for us here, as we still are fighting in Iraq. In other words, this man claims that the existence of a hoax flatly disproves his argument for the war.

"This may well be the stupidest man on the face of the earth..."

of running gun battles with Islamic terrorists in the streets of New York and Baltimore is hilarious. I know it works on people like Tommy, but it only takes a brief moment of "gray thinking" to realize just how ridiculous it is. Sure, they can commit isolated crimes like 9/11, but that was done with a handful of people. They do not have the wherewithal to invade us in force.

What is even more ridiculous is the notion that the fighting in Iraq is stopping any terrorists from coming over here and pulling off another 9/11. Are terrorists that stupid? I wish some Bush apologist would come on here and explain exactly how that works.

Yes, trashing the Bill of Rights has definitely made an impact on preventing American deaths due to hoaxes and practical jokes.

The only problem is that the rabid Fox follower will believe this. I guess there's nothing we can do about it since they'll apparently believe anything Fox says, no matter how absurd it is.
