CNN's Lawrence again suggested Tester is "a get-your-hands-dirty kind of guy," unlike other "urban, elite Democrats"

During CNN's special November 7 coverage of the midterm elections, CNN correspondent Christopher Lawrence again suggested that Montana Democratic Senate candidate Jon Tester is "a different kind of Democrat" because Tester is "a farmer; he's a get-your-hands-dirty kind of guy," unlike "urban, elite Democrats." As Media Matters for America noted, on the November 6 edition of CNN's The Situation Room, Lawrence similarly stated that Tester is "not your typical Democrat," because he is a "third-generation farmer" and "runs a butcher shop," suggesting that few Democrats hold similar occupations.

From the 12 p.m. ET hour of CNN's America Votes 2006:

TONY HARRIS (anchor): And Chris, what is -- there are two things here. You may not want to vote for Conrad Burns, but you have to vote for something. So if you're voting for Jon Tester, what has been his appeal in the state?

LAWRENCE: Well, he's talked about one thing: He's talked about the culture of corruption in Washington, and he's really hit Burns hard on being out of touch with Montana. He's said he's been in office 18 years, he's gone Washington on us, he's not in touch with the people of Montana. And really, Tester is a different kind of Democrat. He's a farmer; he's a get-your-hands-dirty kind of guy -- not more of the urban, elite Democrats. So he's trying to appeal to a lot of those rural and conservative voters that other Democrats may have just written off in the past.

That makes sense. No one seems to be better at getting their hands dirty than this current crop of Republicans.

are always portrayed as elitist snobs. how about when barbara bush said the people who were in the superdome because of katrina were fortunate because that was better than the circumstances they came from. as if living in filth and death was an upgrade.

That's a pretty f'ed-up thing to say. Those "slums" and "shacks" were their homes. I doubt there was a single person in that stadium who wouldn't rather have been back in his/her "shack."

That is the most racist, disgusting thing I have read on MMFA. These were not shacks, these people lost houses. How dare you smear these victims of Katrina.

who said anything about race? I said "poor people" but for you to call it racist means you must automatically apply a certain color to the term "poor people." Why do you stereotype?:-*

You know as well as any person with a TV that well over 95% of the people in the SuperDome were black.

              Stereotype, my left foot.

The all purpose "strawman" Democrat doesn't exist except in the minds of right wingers. It's a shame when these ridiculous memes sink into the heads of "journalists".

Of the politician on both sides of the aisle could be described as "elitist", it's just that the Republicans have managed to hijack that term for their own purposes and have APPLIED it to ONLY Democrats, or MORE specifically Liberals.

For the most part they are ALL [both parties] affluent "elitist" snobs.

Don't forget that Bush once told a *Republican* audience at a fundraiser:

"This is an impressive crowd, the haves, and the have-mores. Some people call you the elite, I call you my base."

"get your hands dirty" because he hasn't been exposed to the DC culture yet. Elites abound in both parties, stay in DC long enough and it is bound to happen. TERM LIMITS, if we can't do it by law, lets do it by ballot.

Several terms were limited just yesterday.

But to be fair to Barbara Bush, she was referring to the poor people after they had been moved to the Houston Astrodome.

I still find it funny that Bush attacks the "elitist left" when here you have a guy who comes from an old money family, got into Yale because of family ties, got into Harvard because of his family, owned a baseball team, was CEO of several companies, and got to be President of the USA because of where he came from, and who he was related to. If that's not elite, I'm not sure what is.
