On the November 28 edition of his nationally syndicated radio show The Savage Nation, host Michael Savage compared reports that incoming Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) "won't swear to uphold the oath of office on the Bible, but on the Quran instead" to "[a] witch get[ting] elected" and saying "she's gonna only be sworn in with her hand over a pentagram." Savage called Ellison's reported decision to be sworn in with a Quran "the tyranny of the psycho, whacked-out minority."

It in unclear what Ellison was referring to when he said, as reported in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, that he would "take the oath of office in Washington on the Qur'an." As the weblog Think Progress reported, "neither the Christian Bible, nor any other religious text, ha[s] ever been used in an official capacity during the ceremony," although "[o]ccasionally, Members pose for symbolic photo-ops with their hand on a Bible." And Article VI of the Constitution states that "no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States." Think Progress was responding to a November 28 Townhall.com column in which radio host Dennis Prager argued that Ellison "should not be allowed to" swear on the Quran "because the act undermines American civilization."

From the November 28 edition of Talk Radio Network's The Savage Nation:

SAVAGE: Keith Ellison won't swear to uphold the oath of office on the Bible, but on the Quran instead. This is unbelievable to me. So what's next? A witch gets elected, and she says she's gonna only be sworn in with her hand over a pentagram? Where does this end? Tell me when this ends, the tyranny of the psycho, whacked-out minority. Tell me when it ends.

That's exactly what I think every time I hear Little Wiener go off on one of his nonsensical rants . . .

P.S - Hey Little Wiener, can you explain to me how can a "psycho, whacked-out" MINORITY have enough power to be a TYRANNY?

What's the point of Keith Ellison, or anyone, taking an oath on a book that means nothing to him?

" What's the point of ......, taking an oath on a book that means nothing to him? "

Isn't that the same arguement made by atheists to prevent themselves from putting their hands on the Bible while being sworn in at a court hearing? What other method do you advocate to provide some sort of belief that the person is telling the truth?

I didn't know that muslims believe that their God is different than the Christian God, so why can't they swear in on the Bible? It IS the God they are swearing to, and not the book, right?? Or, are you saying they can use a copy of 'green eggs and ham' to get sworn in on, if they "choose" to? (that's my favorite book) lol

Allah is the God of the Bible. You miscast the question. Since it is a question about the free expression of religion. Even IF congressmen did swear oaths on the bible, why SHOULDNT a Muslim be able to swear on the Koran instead in keeping with the free expression of HIS religion? What exactly is the rationale for telling him to do so represents some kind of tyranny as the dumb as dirt Hannity suggests. How is it tyrranous for HIM to freely express HIS religion? THAT is the point. Since he isnt demanding EVERYONE swear on the Koran Hannity makes no sense whatsoever.

If the bible contains the new testament, do Jews who swear on it only have to uphold half their oath?

All of congress could swear on a copy of the May 1973 Penthouse, and it would have the same effect as swearing on the bible. Really wanna know when it ends? It ends when the superstitious quit thinking that holding their hand on a book somehow makes their oath sacrosanct. Of course, those of Weiner's ilk are far too intellectually vacuuous to ever recognize that. Apparently, reality is "unbelievable" to him.

How does swearing the oath of office on a religion you don't believe in somehow better than swearing the oath on one you do believe in? Wouldn't doing the former call into question your ethics?

How does this make republicans the big tent party? They don't want gays, they don't want any religion other than theirs, they don't want non republicans in office, they don't want anyone who's skin color is different in a position of authority, etc. etc. etc. There must be a lot of wind blowing in that big tent....

The more books in the room the better. The bible is a pretty good book. But then so are "The Grapes of Wrath" and "The Art of War". These books contain many truths as well as some soothing passages and dire warnings. Take what you will from them.

I'm sure that the Quran is also a good read although I haven't read it, yet. I'd suggest that you get to know a few liberals, Leather. You'd be surprised that we're not all Satan worshippers who crawl around on our bellies.

I would love for you to answer this honestly: was your above post a true representation of your opinion, or are you intentionally saying something outlandish to rile everyone up for your own pleasure.

I ask because your statement is just plain stupid. I have never heard a liberal here or elsewhere complain about Christians swearing on the bible, but we are talking here about a conservative complaining about non-Christians swearing on their appropriate book of worship. It is for that reason that your post is the opposite of reality and farcical.

Lefty owns several bibles. I could probably put one in almost every room. I inherited a couple from my Mom when she died and we already had several. I often give Bibles to relatives as Christmas gifts, I particularly like giving them as first bibles to the young people in my family and I'll buy large print bibles for my love ones when they grow old. I said all this to say shut up and as usual you don't know what you're talking about. Oh yeah and I fully support the congressman's right to swear on the Quran if he chooses to.

..think the image they decided to include with the Townhall.com article is a bit, well.. let me put it this way..

"A liberal Democratic Muslim wants to swear on the Qur'an. Oh, and here's a picture of a woman in a near burqua holding the Qur'an at a Hamas rally against Israeli troops."

Imagine if you will that this hooplah was not about a Muslim, but a Jew; the book the Torah, not the Qur'an. Do you think it would go over well with folks at the ADL if they included this image and included a caption like: "A 19-year old Swedish human rights worker had her cheekbone broken by a Jewish extremist in Hebron today. Earlier the same day at least five Palestinians, including a 3-year-old child, were injured by the settler-supporting extremists, who rampaged through Tel Rumeida hurling stones and bottles at local residents. Palestinian schoolchildren on their way home were also attacked. The Israeli army, which was intensively deployed in the area, did not intervene to stop the attacks."

The intention of the article is quite clear. It's not just about "American values", it's about scaring people.

The same day that Michael talks about something very thought provoking, MM manages to pick out a little clip from the other day which in my opinion was a legitimate observation. I'll bet MM won't post anything Michael talked about today dealing with the supernatural. He put out a question asking if anyone had had a religious/supernatural experience at any time of their lives that changed their lives forever. He said he is not afraid to talk about these particular topics because he's had them and talked about it. Do you think tonight or tomorrow MM will put any of that up? I think not.

The Declaration of Independence and The Constitution. Along with that read the Federalist Papers. I think if you read the Federalists papers specifically that as a the poster before you stated that this government was set up to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority.

You really need to take some history lessons if you think protecting the rights of minorities in this country is a new, liberal thing just to annoy you.

      Have all missed it.

When they do the actual swearing in, nobody, repeat, nobody puts their hand on a Bible, a Quaran, a Torah, or anything else for that matter. They all stand in the House chamber, and all take the oath of office together. Later, they do a photo op with maybe the Speaker or their party leaders with their hand on some sort of religious text, but the real oath, not taken with Bible or other book in hand at all.

I did hear this talked about on all the usual suspects yesterday though. Boortz, Savage, Rush, et all. Everyone is so incensed that he is taking his oath on a Quran. What a bunch of bully this all is.

As Rusty said, methinks you'd be surprised indeed if you "went after liberals" like you say you want to. Methinks someone would come up really short, as most liberals I know, although not violent people, can kick some serious arse when called upon. Hell, the 2 guys I know that are Delta are registered democrats, and think Bush is probably the biggest idiot they have ever seen. And since most conservatives making all the noise these days (Savage included) are all about talking about fighting, and talking a very good game, hardly any of them have served in combat, and never would because they're chickenhawks. Hell, Bush was a cheerleader. Not sure how much less "manly" someone can be, and unfortunately, he's been trying to make up for that ever since.

You guys all talk a good game, but most of you are cheap, lowlife punks.

Most of the conservatives I've known sat on their asses, while, the liberals went off to war.

Take your medication like a good little boy. I see that round shiny thing scared you so you are back in your mommys basement giving in to those delusions of adequacy. If you want to be a troll that actually LASTS you have to do better. This kind of mind boggling ignorance will only get you banned. We are enjoying the amusement caused by your monumental inanity so try to stick around. Better start saving those pennies though because eventually someone as dumb as you will have to hire someone to remind you to breathe.

After all, that's his base ;-)

Jowever, he deserves,oh, maybe half a point for ruminating avout the hypothetical election of a witch without following it up with a cheap shot at Hillary Rodham Clinton or his own Representative, Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Same book, same lies, same idiots defending the lies. Yeah, sure, I'm offending all these 'world religions', institutions of lies. Mankind has never gotten any proof about the existence of God, let alone that there be only one... deal with it please, and stop trying to convert us, wonderers. Take a few lessons from Buddhism, which is NOT a religion, mkay?

who was Japanese, gave me a subscription to a Budhist periodical that I followed with interest for about a year, some fifteen or twenty years back. It noted the distinction between ancient Budhist beliefs and those of the newer Western form, which is pretty much a secular philophy, much like Unitarianism. The old form was complete with good spirits, bad spirits, devils and angels and had striking comparisons to what we find when we actually read the Old Testament. There's a lot about this on the web, google it in and you'll see.
