On the January 12 edition of MSNBC's Countdown, host Keith Olbermann named Weekly Standard editor and part-time columnist for Time magazine Bill Kristol the winner of that day's "Worst Person in the World" award for saying that President Bush's prime-time address on Iraq should have contained "a little more about winning the war and a little less about helping the Iraqis," as Media Matters for America noted. Also, on the January 15 edition of Countdown, Olbermann awarded syndicated radio host Rush Limbaugh "[t]he silver" in his "Worst Person" segment for, as Media Matters documented, "accus[ing] Senator Barbara Boxer [D-CA] of hitting below the ovaries and trying to, quote, lynch Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice because Boxer mentioned, since her own children were too old, her grandchildren too young, and that Rice had no children, neither of them would ever pay a personal price for Iraq." Olbermann then said: "I am assuming comedian [Limbaugh] was equally outraged when first lady Laura Bush said Secretary Rice would never be elected president because she was not married. He wasn't? Shocked. I'm shocked." Olbermann appears to be referring to a reported People magazine interview with first lady Laura Bush to which Nitya Venkataraman referred on Jake Tapper's ABC News blog Political Punch.

From the January 12 edition of MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann:

OLBERMANN: But the winner: Bill Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard on, where else, Fox, complaining about the president's speech. Quoting, "I wish there were a little more about winning the war and a little less about helping the Iraqis." Well, sure, because after all, it's not like Mr. Bush dragged us in there to liberate the people or establish democracy in Iraq or -- oh, yeah, he did. Bill Kristol, today's Worst Person in the World.

From the January 15 edition of MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann:

OLBERMANN: The silver to comedian Rush Limbaugh. Continuing to work off his GOP talking points, he accused Senator Barbara Boxer of hitting below the ovaries and trying to, quote, lynch Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice because Boxer mentioned, since her own children were too old, her grandchildren too young, and that Rice had no children, neither of them would ever pay a personal price for Iraq. I am assuming comedian was equally outraged when first lady Laura Bush said Secretary Rice would never be elected president because she was not married. He wasn't? Shocked. I'm shocked.

The trolls are copying the Tommy strategy....(1) Post first if possible, (2) question why the material is relevant, (3) continue the relevancy "discussion" with obtuse comments as long as possible until a reader has to go to at least the third page of comments to find anything related to the topic.

So cunning that it appears to demonstrate a low intelligence, but it's actually more like a parrot imitating speech.

This is relevant because it's a follow-up on 2 items that MMFA has reported previously.

Please provide the URL of your website, so we can all go there and tell you how to run it.

Do you have anything useful to say?

Who does Olbermann give the award to on the many many days that MMFA doesn't post it?

I could care less if Media Matters pays royalities to Olbermann or vice versa.

Why do you care? No one else does.

I'm a big fan of MMFA , but from time to time it eschews its watchdog function in favor of cheerleading, particularly where Olbermann is concerned.

"Media Matters for America is a Web-based, not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) progressive research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media."

By the way, while I disagree with their opinions, neither Kristol nor Limbaugh were misinforming anybody. They were expressing idiotic opinions.

We need a couple of cheerleaders.

As I'm sure you've noticed, the vast majority of the cheerleaders on the corporate cable channels are right-wingers.

        I'm shocked. Really, I'm shocked.

Used to annoy me, but then again so did Olbermann. BUT since tuning into MSNBC on election night [instead of Fox as I normally would] I have a new respect for Keith & have been watching him at 8 instead of O'Reilly. While I do still think these threads are a bit redundant [seeing we've already discussed this topic] I'm less inclined to voice an objection. AND I actually enjoy Keith's Worst Person In The World Awards ;-)

Especially when Bill Kristol is the recipient.

Here's something to take a look at [oh and pay very close attention to the fact that Kristol uses the term SURGE before the elections...anyone wanna bet that's where Bush got the idea?]

Sept 27th, 2006 exchange between Kristol & Shep Smith

BILL KRISTOL: ... I think President Bush wants to do the right thing and I think he knows there's a problem. He can't probably do anything until election day. I very much hope after election day he takes a fresh look at Iraq, sends enough troops, surges the...goes on the offensive there and plays for victory because. ...

      SMITH: Bill..

KRISTOL: it's just too important to just, you know...

SMITH: It's horrifying that you just said he can't do anything until after the election. We've got men and women over there who are dying every day and you just said that the man who you support can't do anything even though you believe he knows it's wrong.

      More excerpts from the transcript:

SMITH: We're still losing ground in city after city [in Iraq] every day...

KRISTOL: I agree we should move more, but I think Bush has done...at least he has held his own ...ummm... I don't know...it's going back and forth there right now... I agree we could hit a crisis in two, three, four months unless we surge troops after the election. I thinks its hard to ask Bush to do something in the middle of this election season. We've seen how poisonous this political debate has gotten and I think... I just hope... I think he's right to hang tough and I hope he does the right thing after election day.

SMITH: That's a disgusting and repulsive reality, Bill. You have to admit that. That we can't do anything about something that is not working and where people are dying until after our elections are over...

KRISTOL: Well, we could do something... we should do something...but I'm just telling you that....

I've heard a couple of you guys use it. Is that the latest? By the way, utopia is not a bad word. It may not exist. But, it's not a bad word. Just so you know. Look it up.

Dont we want our leaders to take us toward a grand ideal? Whether or not it is attainable is not the question would you prefer we head in the opposite direction? A mans reach SHOULD exceed his gasp if he doesnt reach for the stars how will he know if he can get there. Isnt this what we WANT from our leaders? Thoreau said "If you are one that builds sandcastles in the sky, good, that is where they belong, now put their foundations under them" THAT is what I want from our leaders. Vision, taking us in the RIGHT direction it isnt important that a Utopia is unattainable its STILL the direction we should be moving.

I too have been wondering about the word "utopians" I have seen gathering steam in the right wing lexicon. Here's the result of a very brief google search (sorry for the cut and paste, I still can't navigate my way around this particular comment board).

The recent rise of the term “utopian” in the rightwing lexicon is a reaction to the criticism of 6 years of rightwing policies.

By colorizing the left as reaching for an unattainable goal, utopia, they hope to gain traction for the continuation of laissez-faire government…except of course tax breaks for the rich and rich corporations like ExxonMobil, and bailouts for the airlines, S&Ls, and so on, because the rightwing mind views any monies redistributed to the poor as part of “an unrealistic scheme (Utopianism)” whereas redistributions of wealth UPWARD are “for the good of the economy”.

If you leave criminals to define their crimes, there would be no crime, just “incidents”.

Thanks for the link, I just read it..............................okay did you read the responses to the article?

There were hard to read, not because I disagreed with them (which I do). But they were so poorly typed and well read for yourself... "dipped toe in the water" "We have encouraged him to find profession that will challenge both sides andjust last week"

I have a 5 year old cousin, in comparison she would win the noble prize in literature. But that's just the leftist, english speaking, utopian in me.
