Imus to Gov. Richardson: "Besa mi culo"

February 01, 2007 7:30 pm ET

On the February 1 edition of MSNBC's Imus in the Morning, host Don Imus offered a message to New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson (D-NM): "Besa mi culo," which loosely translates as "kiss my ass" in Spanish. Imus was talking about his frustration with officials in New Mexico, and particularly in the governor's office, over a project that he described as "renovating a school in ... Ribera, New Mexico, to provide a community center for a devastated part of New Mexico." After calling Richardson "that fat governor," Imus said, "How 'bout if I whip your fat ass, Bill?" before an unidentified voice said "Besa mi culo," which Imus echoed. Later in the program, Imus referred to Richardson as "Gordo," which is Spanish for "fat one." Richardson's mother is Mexican.

As Media Matters for America noted, a January 22 Associated Press article reporting on Richardson's decision to form an exploratory committee to run for president in 2008 appeared in the New York Post under the headline: "N.M. Gov Throws Sombrero Into Ring."

As Media Matters also noted, last year Imus referred to the "Jewish management" of CBS Radio as "money-grubbing bastards."

From the February 1 edition of MSNBC's Imus in the Morning:

IMUS: This is not something I want. It's not about me.

UNIDENTIFIED: Call me around 7:15 p.m. I'll be free.

IMUS: About renovating a school in -- in -- Ribera, New Mexico, to provide a community center for a devastated part of New Mexico.

CHARLES McCORD (co-host): I'll be expecting his call --

IMUS: You know, and they jerked her around and never called her. And now they're all calling her the past few days. And then that fat governor wants me to apologize? How 'bout if I whip your fat ass, Bill? How does that sound?

UNIDENTIFIED: Besa mi culo.

IMUS: Yeah, besa mi culo, Richardson.

[...]

IMUS: So Governor Richardson -- this may not be all his fault, by the way -- but he is in charge. If he wants to run for president, he's got to get his act together and stop being a fat baby about all of this.

[...]

IMUS: And then, I had some little snivelly little weenie on the -- Phil -- Paul Shipley, who is Governor Richardson's communications director. I mean, this is unbelievable. He actually calls me and leaves a message that he wants me to -- wants me -- me -- to call him, some little pipsqueak yuppie on Governor Richardson's incompetent phony staff in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and discuss this. And then another one of these little pinheads says to Julie that they're demanding an apology.

Here's my apology: Besa mi culo! How is that?

UNIDENTIFIED: Gordo.

IMUS: Gordo. Governor Richardson better get on the phone and apologize, one, to me, and then apologize to Gloria Gonzalez and the people of Ribera.

Imus is insensitive.  Tell us something we don't know.  No misinformation here.  If you'd continue with the transcript you'd also see that Imus calls Richardson a friend and Gov Richardson has been on the Imus show many times.

Not sure where you're going with the Post article about throwing a Sombrero in the ring either.  It is a HAT after all.  One throws one's hat/sombrero/fedora into the ring.

Gov. Richardson has made no bones about his Latino heritage and has been able to parlay that into a nice political career for himself.  Having lived in a border town for several years, this is a non-issue in the southwest.

Only an issue for race-baiting web sites.

They specifically said "sombrero" in an obvious jab at the fact that Richardson is part Mexican. Why didn't they just say "hat"? The phrase is "throw his hat into the ring." Why say "sombrero" unless you're deliberately trying to draw needless attention to the fact that his ancestry is Mexican? It's not a secret; why treat it like one?

It's the same mentality that allows the conservative media to say "Barack HUSSEIN Obama" but not "Hillary DIANE Clinton" or "Pat JOSEPH Buchannan".

Why point one out but not the others?

Oh, I know. It's called bigotry. It's obvious. And it's repulsive.

Sombrero is not a jab. It's not racist.

It is humorous play on throwing one's hat into a ring. Sombreros are not racist. If Bill Richardson wins the presidential race, and at his election party they all wear sombreros, will you call them a bunch of racists?  Is it worse than saying Latino to Run for President? Do you think that is racist to mention his Latino heritage?

I find Imus to be insensitve but to say he is is the voice of the Republican Party is outrageous. I listented to him this morning when he called The Vice President (who happens to be a Republican) a war criminal, a fat war criminal and a coward to Paul Begala (not a Republican) and a regular on the Imus show.

MMFA is right to highlight the insensitive remarks but the bigger issue is how MSNBC allows it and Ketih Olbermann who is the "voice" of proper behavior on the airwaves has never named is fellow MSNBCer the "Worst Person in the World" even after Imus calls Hillary "Satan". Imus is a problem but he is a reflection of how phony MSNBC is and Olbermann.

Nice point Dorisrussell on KO, who I think is the best in prime time cable and has been raging against the machine and the radical wing-nut Republican led executive branch and Congress while the rest of the so called journalists literally stuck their heads in the sand.

Now that we have something resembling "checks and balances' again, there's a little more questioning by the corporate controlled mainstream media and a little more reporting on the news of the day without ignoring or re framing it.

That said since the posts here are intended to be related to Imus. Well to say the man is a loose cannon would be an understatement. He's obnoxious, crude, and yes downright racist at times. Though he "claims" he's not racist, and  pols like Richardson are "his friends?. That just adds insult to injury.

He should be regulated to Howard Stern land, his rantings are getting less and less entertaining and many times he stops mid sentence, goes off in some direction that makes no sense.

But his rant and insults against Richardson should get him yanked off at least the viewing part that MSNBC broadcasts his radio show each day.

Your not entirely right about Keith not calling out other broadcasts on MSNBC. I know he has, as far as the "worst Person of the World" his excellent segment on the absurdities and outrageous comments and commentary, I don't know if he has specifically signaled out idiotic comments like Imus made. He may have in his sound bites of the day. I'm sure he has some constraints like every network employee does in not dissing his colleagues, but KO seems to have more freedom than most as well. So watch him and you just may be surprised.

As far as Imus... nothing to see there.

I think the problem this forum has with him is that he slams the Clinton's on a regular basis.  If it wasn't for that, I doubt you'd ever see his ugly mug grace this site.

He is an equal opportunity basher. He does call Bush and Cheney Morons and War Criminals. The problem I have with Imus is his insensitive remarks and how his mouth does not come into MSNBC attention in regards to Olbermann , yet Olbermann can name someone "worst Person in the World" for saying 1/2 as bad as Imus does.

Tex if you actually watched the show, you'd know that Imus is a Rep. in name only.  He has stated on his show he hasn't voted for a Rep. in something like thirty years for POTUS.

I don't pretend to know how he actually pulls the lever, but as far as his show goes, his support is all over the board.  He supported Kerry in fact in '04.  Harold Ford Jr. was another of his candidates.  Lots of Dems have had great publicity off his show.

I've posted this here before and it's worth repeating.  MMfA and yourself may not like Imus and his message, but DC insiders fall all over themselves to get on that show.  If it didn't resonate on some level, I doubt they'd subject themselves to that kind of abuse.

At the top of these several comments, the guy was called a "walking corpse", which is as accurate a way as any to describe the guy's appearance...

...if imus attended a convention of undertakers, they'd at least consider him to be their next customer, if not already overdue for embalming.

Then his hat was mentioned... and for sure, I know he wears the thing to cover up and distract from his cadaver appearance (that, and whatever oversized jacket  he also always wears... what, they don't heat the studio where he works?).

And TEX mentioned the addage about overplaying your style card when it comes to choosing your lid (that's how I think of it anyway).

All of which are true and accurate observations, of how this bum imus (who has obviously been scraped from the bottom of the hack barrel) distracts as best he can from his appearance (which still has the residue from being scraped from the bottom of the barrel).

The first thing I noticed in the transcription of the bum, is that he pretends to say what he said (about Mr. Richardson)... he pretends to say it to Mr. Richardson's face...

IMUS: How 'bout if I whip your fat ass, Bill? How does that sound? ...besa mi culo, Richardson.

Does the FCC really allow that, for bums on the radio to broadcast personal messages and greetings to people not there, in person in the studio?

Would that bum have said what he said, had Mr. Richardson been sitting right there, in front of the cadaver?

              I doubt it.

Bums are never as threatening as they make out to be, once you confront them, up close and personal...

...the same thing can be said of a rotting cadaver, whether it walks or lies or simply stinks the joint up.

Imus is just another media "personality" w validates my position. To hold such a JOB one's IQ must be equal to ones belt size. However, Imus takes it one steo further. I suspect that this is how he talks to his family. Being a sanctimonious jerk hardly seems to be another qualification, and this will include O'Lielly, IMUS, Tucker, Tweety Matthews, Lou Dobbs, et al. How much lower can the media stoop!

      ****TO ALL WHITE PEOPLE HERE****

You guys are clueless.  You CAN'T get offended for a group of people over something said if that particular group isn't outraged themselves.  For example, when Arnold called some mexican woman spicey, hispanics didn't give a crap and white liberals were the ones who got mad about it.

I am hispanic (it blows my cover as col campbell i know) and this mmfa posting is a joke.  Mexicans make fun of eachother all the time and they really don't cry about someone making a little remark like some other groups out there who shall remain nameless.  This is funny, Imus is funny, no one is offended, therefore you being offended just makes y'all look over the top, over sensitive, and trying to over compensate for your white guilt that Bill Clinton so eloquently pointed out.

Col., I don't care what your ethnicity is. You aren't able to speak for everyone that shares your race any more than I can.

State your opinion, but leave it up to others to share theirs.

yeaaah i dont agree with that at all.  if black people can have jesse jackson speak for them then i can speak for mine.  honestly this is just MMFA playing the "GOTCHA IMUS!" but the only difference is no one but mmfa and mmfa posters care.  hispanics dont care.  gov richardson doesnt care.  that makes this posting all the more irrelevant.

        Colonel Roy,

Ok I'll give you the benefit of the doubt when you claim: I am hispanic (it blows my cover as col campbell i know)

Trust me when I tell you that 95% of the other posters here won't believe you. Or won't care.

Respecting others really should have little to do with White Guilt, though I'll agree some do suffer from that malady and are often more distressed than the group that has allegedly been insulted.

I have NO White Guilt. My family arrived here from Italy in the early 1900's. We didn't own plantations, or hold anyone in servitude. And as far as I know, none of my family [present or past] were ever involved in racist activity. That doesn't mean I don't feel empathy for what others have had to deal with & go through.

While I believe it's more important to hear from minorities about what they consider to be slurs, slights, & bigoted behavior than what White folks say should offend them....I simply follow the Golden Rule...you know...Do unto others etc.

"COL. ROY" admonishes us to "GET A LIFE".

      Excellent idea.

Let us all strive to get a life that is free of rightwing bigots, rid of NeoCon warmongers, shed of Republican elitists, and bereft of any "conservative" in any position of power.

THAT ... will be a life worth living. And after the 2006 elections, we're well on our way. Sadly, even the Col. will benefit from America's improving fortunes.

          "just get a life"

And what are the consequences if we don't get a life (or should I say, the kind of life you think we should get)??

What? Bad things will happen?? Like losing the House and Senate?

Thanks, "colonel", for the sage advice.

Liberals secretly like it when the right-wing blowhards say these things.  After all, it then gives the liberals a free pass to also say these things as an example of how ridiculous it is to say these things.

So right. Yes, us liberals secretly enjoyed the segregated schools, drinking fountains, and lunch counters. We just loved to TALK about how ridiculous they were, not do anything about them.

Very true.  I can't argue with that one.  I was born in 1965 so fortunately didn't have to live through any of that.  Segregation was a deplorable part of our history.  Republicans were on the wrong side of that.

It's easy to look back on past generations and see where they failed and how we have progressed to be a better society.  Hopefully we continue to learn from our mistakes.

My guess is that you are pro-choice.  I hope you realize that future generations (who knows how far out) will likely see your viewpoint as unbelievably barbaric as medical advances will eliminate the need for abortions.  People will wonder in the future how we as a society condoned killing the unborn merely for convenience.  My point being that not all liberal viewpoints will withstand the test of time.  This is, of course, just MHO.

Republicans saw to it that the 1967 Civil Rights Act got passed.  Plenty of Democrats voted against it--wouldn't have passed w/o Republican votes.

The "unidentified" voice belongs to none other than professed racist and closet gay, Bernard McGuirk.

This show is about nothing more than a "dry drunk" and his ass-licking sycophants sitting around calling everybody Jews, gays, blacks and liberals, because they know they can't get away with calling them what they'd really like to call them.

It makes me sick that any of the great members of the political reporting community (David Gregory, Brian Williams, Tom Brokaw, etc.) would even bother to phone in and talk with such a broken-down, shattered egomaniac.

They're really only a step down from the profanity and vulgarities spewed by the nonsensical racist Michael Savage (undoubtedly a hero of McGuirk's).

The whole show should be jettisoned from MSNBC.  Let them spew their drivel on the radio if they want; just get 'em off the air.  The whole thing is, to quote Imus, "God-awful."
