Anti-Semite Andy Martin in NewsMax: "Free Obama's White Grandmother"

March 29, 2007 5:39 pm ET

In a March 28 column for NewsMax.com titled "Free Obama's White Grandmother," "Internet journalist" Andy Martin wrote that Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL), whom he called "one of the most racist politicians in America today," has "locked the grandmother who actually raised him away in a closet," adding: "[T]he 'segregation' of Madelyn Dunham, Obama's white grandmother, and only real grandmother, has to be one of the cruelest and most mendacious political kidnappings this nation has ever seen." Martin wrote that Dunham "is the 'Prisoner of Obama,' and of Obama's racist myth that he is 'Black' and not 'Black and White.' "

Martin offered no evidence for any of his allegations, other than quoting from a March 27 Chicago Tribune article, which reported that "the Obama campaign declined to make Madelyn Dunham, 84, available" for an interview and referring to a New York Times article in which, according to Martin, "Dunham told the New York Times she was not well enough to speak." That Times article, published on March 17, reported that "Obama still visits his maternal grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, who lives in the same high-rise apartment where Mr. Obama spent much of his childhood. 'I'm not well,' she said on the telephone, explaining her refusal to meet for an interview."

Apparently based on these two reports, Martin arrived at the conclusion that Obama, whom he called a "media witch doctor," has "locked his granny away and refused to allow her to be seen" in order to "pretend he has no white relatives." Martin concluded that "locking Madelyn away is going to hurt Obama more with African-Americans than with whites," because "[w]hites delight in drinking Obama's Kool-Aid." He went on to explain that "blacks," however, "are a lot smarter than whites when it comes to slights, because they have experienced racial slights all their lives," and because "[d]uring the decade when crack devastated the African-American community it was the 'Black Grannies' who were and are the backbone of the community."

As Media Matters for America noted, Martin was author Catherine Moy's purported source for claiming that Obama "flat-out lied" about his upbringing, and that the school Obama attended as a child in Indonesia was "not a madrassa, but that they did teach the Quran, and they did teach that Jews are pigs. So that it -- you know, those kind of things that the Quran teaches, all of those things in the Quran that offend so many, he was taught." The claim that Obama attended a madrassa as a child -- originating in InsightMag.com -- has been thoroughly debunked. Before Obama's February 10 announcement that he would run for president, Martin wrote: "During Obama Week leading up to February 10th, we will release our CIA-style psychological profile on him; that analysis will cast more light on Barack's supple psyche and his ability to seamlessly deny objective reality."

Media Matters also noted that, according to a February 10, 2006 Chicago Tribune article, Martin "referred to a federal bankruptcy judge as a 'crooked, slimy Jew, who has a history of lying and thieving common to members of his race,'" and expressed "understand[ing] for how the Holocaust took place." Several news articles have reported that Martin's Selective Service file described him as having a "moderately-severe character defect manifested by well documented ideation with a paranoid flavor and a grandiose character."

Martin's March 28 NewsMax.com column is reproduced below in its entirety:

If anyone else running for president locked his granny away and refused to allow her to be seen, would the media complain? You betcha.

But America's media have supinely allowed Barry Obama to pretend he has no white relatives. He has paraded his step-grandmother in Kenya, who never saw him until the 1980s, as his "granny," and locked the grandmother who actually raised him away in a closet.

Now, the Chicago Tribune reports "the Obama campaign declined to make [his white grandmother] available."

Is she sick? Not apparently. Bedridden? Hospitalized? Not apparently. She is the "Prisoner of Obama," and of Obama's racist myth that he is "Black" and not "Black and White."

What a disgrace.

And like whimpering puppies the media do not protest, complain or demand access.

Free Granny Madelyn Dunham [Obama]!

Barack Obama is one of the most racist politicians in America today. And we let him get away with it. We are afraid to confront Obama's reality, so we pretend that reality is not there, even though it is staring us in the face. Anyone remember "Miss Lillian?" Or Barbara Bush? Or Bill Clinton's mom, drinking, gambling card-playing gal that she was?

Noone else but Obama could get away with pretending that his paternal grandfather's second or third or fourth wife was his "granny" when she wasn't.

Maybe that's the core of the antipathy between grandson and grandmother. Maybe that's why Obama's white grandmother is locked in purdah. She is offended that Obambi shamelessly highlights his black relatives in Kenya and, equally shamelessly, pretends his white relatives in Hawaii who actually raised him do not exist. It would hurt me.

No one could get away with pretending his white grandmother didn't exist except a media witch doctor such as Obama.

I have been attacking Obama for months because of his racist exclusion of his white relatives from the campaign trail.

We finally smoked out a picture of Obama's sister in the Chicago Tribune. She had said she was his "adviser" but refused to be photographed. Did she plan to enter the White house with a paper sack over her head?

But the "segregation" of Madelyn Dunham, Obama's white grandmother, and only real grandmother, has to be one of the cruelest and most mendacious political kidnappings this nation has ever seen.

Mrs. Dunham lives alone in the same apartment where she has lived for many years. Thus, it is reasonable to assume she is not incapacitated or an invalid.

Granny Dunham told the New York Times she was not well enough to speak, but in reality the Obama campaign maintains Stalinist "control" over potential interviewees. Obama's minions tried to control access to Obama's friend who was recently released from prison. Since he became a candidate for U.S. Senator, Obama has locked his white relative away in his racist closet.

Madelyn Dunham raised Barry Obama. It was probably her money that got him admitted to the prestigious Punahou School in Hawaii and paid his fees. Her efforts were formative, perhaps even more so than those of Obama's mother Ann, Madelyn's daughter. And yet Madelyn is being hidden away.

All because she is white and Barry Obama is a "black" candidate for president.

What a lie. What hypocrisy. What cowardice. And this man wants to sit in the Oval Office?

Ironically, locking Madelyn away is going to hurt Obama more with African-Americans than with whites. Whites delight in drinking Obama's Kool-Aid. Reason and reality will only gradually descend on them.

But blacks are a lot smarter than whites when it comes to slights, because they have experienced racial slights all their lives. Blacks know who Obama is, and they know how he is trying to "pass" and ignore his past.

During the decade when crack devastated the African-American community it was the "Black Grannies" who were and are the backbone of the community. These grandmothers helped stabilize disintegrating families ravaged by drugs. Black grannies will not like the fact that their white counterpart is being treated badly by Obama.

Black and white grandmothers? My guess is they will stick together on this one. They will be offended by the way Obama is treating the woman who really raised him and was the stabilizing factor in his life, Madelyn Dunham.

I repeat: Free Granny Madelyn Dunham [Obama]!

For instance crack has indeed devistated poor AA neigborhoods, it isn't global; so contrary to the stories these guys advance in their right wing cirlces the overwhelming majority of AAs are hard working non-crack heads and the vast majority of AA children are raised by at least one non-crack head parent. I wish we could lock these baiters up until after the election, yuk they are so creepy.

Are they seen as the truth tellers of the conservative way?

I should have said why are there som many of these people on the right, it seems as if they're in process of completely overrunning the conservative media. The only person on the left I can think of that might come close to these crazies is Mike Malloy and it’s that reason that I don't like his show. I can’t think of any liberal print media personality that approaches this. I think these nuts are doing more damage to conservatism than anyone on the left could ever do. I am sure there are some middle of the roaders asking the same question I'm asking 'why are there so many crazies in the conservative media?'

Very good questions - and I think much of it is market driven.  Many of these shockapundits have decided the best way to get attention, a radio show, a cable TV booking, an internet column, whatever - feel like they must be offensive, hurtful, absolutely politically incorrect as hell, and say outrageous things to make a living.  They see Coulter and the $$ she makes, and they want on that gravy train too.......and Limbaugh and the rest.

Sadly, there is a market among some conservatives for this type of trash, there is no denying that.  But eventually it will oversaturate itself and burn out, one can only hope.  All this vitriolic spewing talk will sicken enough people and turn decent them off and it will wane......one day.

I think Tiger Woods said it best when he said that calling him an "African American" is offensive because it is a denial of his mother, who is part Asian and part white.  I think Obama should take the same stance: calling him "African American" is offensive because it is a denial of his mother, who is white.

Well, thank goodness I'm 100% Irish-American, no complications.

          But wait!

My grandmother and some of my uncles, aunts and cousins are so dark-eyed, dark-haired and olive-complected we think a sailor from the Spanish Armada climbed into the family tree.  So, I'm Spanish-Irish-American?

          But wait!

In Ireland, when some people hear my name, they growl at me and call me a Norman.  So I'm French-Spanish-Irish-American?

          But wait!

"Norman" comes from "Norseman", and in 1066 the Normans were still as more Viking than French.  So-o, I'm Norse-French-Spanish-Irish-American?

          But wait!

My ancestors were actually Flemish (oh, no, possibility of Saxon contamination) Normans, who'd intermarried with the Welsh before coming to Ireland.  So-o-o, I'm  Norse-French-Flemish-Welsh-Spanish-Irish-American?

          But wait!

Geneticists have discovered that all Asians, Europeans and Amerindians are descended from a guy who had a Y chromosome marker that showed up 30,000 years ago in Central Asia.  So-o-o-o, I'm Kazakh-Norse-French-Flemish-Welsh-Spanish-Irish-American?

          But wait!

That guy was clearly descended from folks who'd left Africa 50,000 years ago.  So-o-o-o-o, I'm actually African-Kazakh-Norse-French-Flemish-Welsh-Spanish-Irish-American?

      IntObserver,

Perhaps the paternal grandmother is deceased or not around . . . but I fail to see how she is any less "real" a grandmother than Ms. Dunham . . .

This is like saying Obama has only one "real" parent . . . or perhaps that's what Raggedy Andy is trying to subtly hint; that only the "white" side of Barack Obama can considered "virtuous" : ever since Obama declared his candidacy, every rightwingnut yattering head has tried to make an issue of his race - usually by trying to emphasize the white side of his family to deemphsize his blackness {"He's 'halfrican' "- Morgan and Limbaugh . . . "He's 'colorless' " - Beck}, or when his blackness is mentioned, always in a negative connotation {"He attends a separatist, racist church" - Hannity} . . .

I suppose these neonutjobs will say ANYTHING, no matter how false or absolutely ridiculous it is, to smear Barack Obama . . . but hey, being false or absolutely ridiculous never stopped them before . . .

Can you imagine what the conservatives would say if Obama were to introduce his granny at a press conference or a fund-raiser?   How they would revile him for subjecting her to this public scrutiny and accuse him of trotting her out to woo the white vote? And if she were frail, in wheelchair or walker?  Scream about his not caring for her welfare?

And has anyone considered that he may be respecting her desire for privacy, just as candidates respect the privacy of their children?

Kudos to both Obama and his grandmother, or either, if they choose not to exploit her for his campaign.

And kudos to her for having raised a decent, intelligent, well-educated grandson who has real class.

This kinda crap is as likely instigated and promoted by Obama's competition in his own Democratic Party, and/or a mass media that has to fill space with SOMETHING; get serious.  You just WISH it all came from "conservatives"(whatever that means).

Oops, forgot.  Progressives are sanctified, and incapable of doing anything dirty.

          LEMOC,

That is just satire, right?  You have to be kidding, no one would claim that NewsMax is a progressive website, would they?  Are you saying that someone on the left who doesn't like Obama called up a right-wing "news" website and called one of its columnists and said write a hit-piece to benefit my campaign???  That makes as much sense as invading a country that didn't attack you and saying its part of the same war. Oh, wait.......

"This kinda crap is as likely instigated and promoted by Obama's competition in his own Democratic Party, and/or a mass media that has to fill space with SOMETHING; get serious."

You make a charge that the subject at hand (charges made by Andy Martin at the righty website NewsMax) are likely coming from someone in the Democratic Party "and/or" the media (if it's "or" then I guess Obama's Democratic competitors are off the hook) and you tell us to "get serious"?

"You just WISH it all came from "conservatives" (whatever that means)."

If I had a wish, I wouldn't waste it wishing for something that is already a reality. Of course criticism will come toward him from other Democrats. That's the political system we live in, but stories such as the Obama/Madrassa smear came from conservative sources such as Insight Magazine who then tried to get a bank-shot out of it by unconvincingly attributing it to unnamed sources in Hillary's campaign. Most of the Obama stories are coming from conservatives (like the story in this thread), and I share your puzzlement as to what "conservative" means these days.

"Oops, forgot.  Progressives are sanctified, and incapable of doing anything dirty."

I don't think that you'll find too many on this site who would claim this, but this character Andy Martin is clearly a rightwinger and it is his story under discussion.

Irrespectful of Andy Martin and who he may be, and what he may pull out of a hat, etc., what I'm saying is politics is a dirty game and has a long history (both sides) of pulling crap on each other in the early pre-primary stages as well as the duration of the contest.

Looking at the bigger picture, here--not just Andy Martin.

Does Newmax even count as a news source these days? Or, well, ever for that matter? They're tabloid journalism, at best, and that might be talking bad about tabloids.

      JUST IN****NEWSDRUDGEFOX FLASHMAXBUZZ.nuts**********

It has been discovered that Andy Martin NEVER had a grandmother.

That's right, NEVER. Upon further scientific study, his only connection to the human race is a tiny piece of sh*t that fell from the mouth of a fly and hit the ground. It was ingested by a slug which inturn, redeposited it to the earth and hence an ANDY MARTIN was created.

Guess he would be called a double piece of sh*t.

If he did ever have a grandmother, would she be proud of him?

He is looking for money from the CONS and as mentioned above, he will probably join the circuit on Fox.  Look out Annie, someone is "FUNNIER" than you.

No, the existence of Andy martin would be an argument for de-evolution.

Pardon if my ignorance is showing, but don't most African-Americans have white ancestry due to the legacy of slavery?  So is the fact that they identify as black a denial of their heritage as well?  Or does this only apply to Obama, whose father was African?

        I forgive your ignorance...

Legacy? only IF the lineage rooted from a slave mother who was impregnated (usually raped) by her slaveowner(s). It could also be from a male slave impregnating a female slave owner (daughter or wife of the original slave owner). Then that would be true.

In this case, it is irrelevant what nationality Obama's father was. This is about his white mother's family line, which apparently owned slaves in the past. Thats it.

You know, maybe his grandmother isn't talking to the media because she'd be subjected to the exact kind of baseless attacks we're seeing right now.

It's pretty clear that the dude is a twisted, psycopathic liar.  As such, it's no surprise that he is published by the right wing, read by the right wing, and very much "of" the right wing.

But take heart, dear friends.  Remember Dorian Gray?  Well, welcome to the Republican attic! The patina of patriotism is wearing off the neo-conservative facade and thanks to NewsMax and authors like this fool, it's real face is being revealed.  The more of this ugliness is revealed, the less the American voter is going to lean rightward.
