Coulter: "I do think anyone named B. Hussein Obama should avoid using 'hijack' and 'religion' in the same sentence"

On the June 25 edition of Fox News' Hannity & Colmes, discussing Sen. Barack Obama's (D-IL) June 23 speech at a church in Hartford, Connecticut, co-host Alan Colmes asked right-wing pundit Ann Coulter if "[o]nly Republicans can talk in churches." Coulter responded: "No, but I do think anyone named B. Hussein Obama should avoid using 'hijack' and 'religion' in the same sentence." Colmes replied: "I see. So, in other words, you want to paint him as a terrorist by continuing to highlight that his middle name is Hussein?" Coulter stated: "Just avoid those two together. ... Avoid 'hijack and 'religion.' "

Coulter was apparently referring to Obama's comment in his June 23 speech about the use of religion as a divisive tactic: "But somehow, somewhere along the way, faith stopped being used to bring us together and started being used to drive us apart. It got hijacked."

Coulter is scheduled to appear on MSNBC's Hardball on June 26. As Media Matters for America documented, during her last Hardball appearance on July 27, 2006, Coulter called former Vice President Al Gore a "total fag."

From the June 25 edition of Fox News' Hannity & Colmes:

COLMES: Joining us now is author of Godless, Ann Coulter, and Fox News political analyst and writer at Gather.com, Laura Schwartz. Welcome to you both.

Now, Ann, when you write a book called Godless, about which you're talking -- you're talking about liberals, isn't that divisive?

COULTER: Right. Unlike a guy running for president making that little speech in a church in order to advance his nomination to be the Democrat [sic] presidential nominee.

COLMES: Oh, it's only -- only Republicans can talk in churches, right?

COULTER: No, but I do think anyone named B. Hussein Obama should avoid using "hijack" and "religion" in the same sentence.

COLMES: I see. So, in other words, you want to paint him as a terrorist by continuing to use -- to highlight that his middle name is Hussein?

COULTER: Just avoid those two together.

COLMES: So, in other words, he -- only you can talk like that. Only conservatives. Someone whose middle name is Hussein should not talk like that.

COULTER: Avoid "hijack" and "religion."

COLMES: I see.

It's obvious that Colmes is 100x smarter than this dolt, Coulter.  I'm glad to see someone... even in Colmes' way... to call her, word for word, on her purile nonsense.

Why is this woman(?) back on the playing field? If someone says 'market pressure'... you can stick it. That's bs.

I dunno.  Maybe Colmes is a smart guy, maybe not.  But either way, it seems to me that he's paid by Fox to be a professional straw man.

The smart thing for him to say would have been, "Incidentally, I think people named Coulter should avoid the word f4gg0t.  Or maybe just words in general. You don't seem to use them very well."  Or if he had any integrity, the guy would have cut to the chase and said: "Act like a grown-up or get off my show."

I really hope he's been paid handsomely for the soul he sold to Fox.

She is made entirely of discarded dick mengle cheney body parts and when they wired the brain they were busy counting their Halicheneyburton stocks. I wonder if you were this upset when you learned that Clinton dodged the draft. At least Bush served.

Or like how a guy who signed the death warrants on an amazing number of prisoners shouldn't joke about putting them to death

Ann Richards put quite a few to death in Texas too, and I doubt that bothered you.

More to the point, Ricky Ray Rector had the mentally challenged intellect of a child, and was so far removed from reality that when he was taken to be executed in Arkansas (Bubba signed the death warrant), he asked for his pecan pire to be left where it was so he could have it later. Did Texas execute anyone like that when Bush was the gov?

I wouldn't call what Bush did "serving."

Spin it however you want. My brother has gone to Iraq. Twice. HE served. Bush didn't even come close.

I would argue that Bush's (in)actions in the 60's more closely resemble "dodging the draft" than Clinton's.

I was horrified about Rector. Clinton cared more about looking tough on crime than what was right and what was wrong. I dont know what would constitute 'anyone like that' but yes at least three mentally retarded people were executed while Bush was Governor.  Oliver Cruz,  Terry Washington who was described this way

Mr. Washington's mental retardation was so severe that it was immediately recognized when he entered school, and tests throughout his short life showed an I.Q. ranging from 58 to 69. His reading never advanced beyond the second-grade level. His communication skills were at the level of a 7- year-old and his social skills at that of a 5-year-old.

            And Charles Boyd.

WHY, Ann? The only reason you give is his NAME. Apparently, B. Huessein Obama as just a NAME means he must avoid certain words. Together. WHY, Ann?

Perhaps a Rightwinger could help explain this "joke"? Why is it funny? Why won't she own up to explaining WHY she thinks it's funny, and why OTHERS should join her in the mirth?

His parents gave him a name at birth, and today it is SIMILAR to the names of some Moslems, A VERY FEW of whom have turned out to be terrorists. So because the names are similar, he should avoid "certain words together" ... because he's not allowed? Because it will cause panic? Because it will target him for unreasoning hatred? WHY, Ann?

[Or perhaps a Rightwinger could show up and tell me I have "no sense of humor" because I don't understand what's funny about saying nationally that someone's NAME ALONE brands them as a "terrorist" who must be careful what he says. I GET the "joke" ... it's just not funny in the least.]

Only in the Mind of Coulter

Some weeks ago someone on these boards (please wave if it was you!) pointed out a fact about Coulter, in that she cannot control herself from saying something if she thinks it's clever; I think it was from the "They shot the wrong Lincoln" babblefest.  A comment comes to her that is 1 percent clever and 99 percent mean-spirited, illogical gibberish, and she grabs onto the 1 percent and runs with it.  Indeed, in the discussion with Alan Colmes, it's clear she had nothing else to say.  Let's look at the exchange again:

COULTER: No, but I do think anyone named B. Hussein Obama should avoid using "hijack" and "religion" in the same sentence.

COLMES: I see. So, in other words, you want to paint him as a terrorist by continuing to use -- to highlight that his middle name is Hussein?

COULTER: Just avoid those two together.

COLMES: So, in other words, he -- only you can talk like that. Only conservatives. Someone whose middle name is Hussein should not talk like that.

        COULTER: Avoid "hijack" and "religion."

In addition to getting some pretty basic facts wrong (Obama said "faith," not religion, and that and "hijacked" were in different sentences), and twisting Obama's name to make it look as 'bad' as possible (he doesn't go by "B. Hussein"), she seemed genuinely bewildered by the fact that the others in the studio weren't doubled over with laughter at her superbly clever wit.  Instead, Colmes challenged her on it, and she kept repeating it.  It was clearly the only card in her deck.  Moreover, she thought it was the ace of spades, and it was only the two of clubs.

She wrote a book titled "How to Talk to a Liberal (If You Must)"; so how did she talk to Colmes?  She presented a lame joke, got called on it, and presented it a second time and a third time, and didn't answer anything.  If that's the tactic she recommends, I'm glad I didn't waste my time or money on such a publication.

The humor, Tex, is clearly in her own mind, and of those with like mind.  I praise God that we aren't in that number.

      This is Anne's humor.

Not funny? Well let's just say her shtick has gotten predictable. Now you can all fret & moan and call her names if it makes you feel better.

I just shrug, cause Anne Coulter & her humor, shtick, smears-- whatever label you want to tag them as are, like the lady herself, really quite irrelevant in the larger scheme of things.

Here's what I mean: Folks know her. They love her or hate her or... just chuckle, shrug or roll their eyes. Nothing she says or writes will turn those that love her against her. Nothing she says or writes will convince those that hate her to love her. And those like myself that take her for what she is [purposely controversial] are not influenced one way or the other by her.

This play on Obama's middle name is lame. It's already been done to death...before Coulter.

Actually, Max, what threads like this do is give us practice in shooting down Coulter's insane statements, and arm us in our next political/media debates with our friends and relatives.

As Jeter correctly pointed out just a couple of steps above, "Nothing she says or writes will convince those that hate her to love her."  If I may extrapolate a bit:  Nothing she says or writes will convince anyone to buy her books who wasn't already likely to do so.  If you are likely to buy her books, then you were likely to do so before you came here.  If you weren't likely to buy her books, then surely the articles posted here aren't going to change anything.

In short, Max, you're flat-out wrong.  I have a feeling it won't be the last time.

Snoopy....thank you for the link to the Think Progress article.

However; I was saddned-sickened by the pro-Coulter...anti-Edwards discourse in the comment section below the article. Much was crude, and hateful, not unlike the spewings of their idol Ann Coulter.

So then I read this comment, and comments of others, and I see the comments here are once again dropping to the crudeness levels of the Coulter fan club.

Coulter sold her soul a long time ago, but couldn't we raise the bar up just a bit more when we discuss these Coulter articles?

JS.....I don't think you quite got the gist of my comment.

Your rather crude title doesn't work because her book was titled "Godless" refering to Democrats.

When they put it on the screen, instead of saying "Ann Coulter, author of the book Godless"...they wrote "Godless author Ann Coulter".

Now THAT is funny.....as would be "Brainless author Ann Coulter" had her book been titled "Brainless". Now do you get it?

Val..... I often love reading your posts but I don't need  "lightening up". You didn't get the gist of my comment either.

Her title Godless refers to Democrats, and the IRONY was that the way they worded it on the screen.

The way it reads, Coulter is a Godless authur. It was unintended, but the title used before her name is wonderful irony.

So, any other title would have to fit the caption line "_______ author Ann Coulter", and be her title of a book about a Democrat or Liberal, etc.. Her title backfired on her when someone wrote this caption, and the irony is great!

I never intended to get your hackles up, and I didn't ask you to appologise for anything. Now you call me "the fricken content police".

Don't give me this "we on the left" bit. I am a die hard Democrat....the first born in a family of die hard Republicans. I also married into family of die hard Republicans. I have read MMFA since day one. I left one of the first posts. I only recently started posting again. I have enjoyed reading your comments until now.

I had already told Valentinian in a post hours before your last comments, that I stand corrected. I reread the post, and understood what Val meant when Val said how Dickless could work.

I jumped to the conclusion that you didn't get what I was saying because of your title suggestion. In all honesty, I thought it was just another chance to make another gender joke, and frankly that is getting old. I'm not the first to mis-read someone's thoughts in a few words, nor I will be the last. Hardly a day goes by that someone on this site isn't appologising to another because their words/thoughts were mis-understood.

Ann always plays with her hair during interviews.  It's a nervous tick.  Ask anyone who studies face and body language.  They will probably agree that Coulter is nervous about being interviewed.

That being said, I hope she's nervous all the time.  Just because I'm a liberal doesn't mean I have to be fair about people like Coulter.  I'm as unapologetic in my disrespect for Right-wing conservatives - as they don't deserve the respect they feel they require.  So here goes:  Ann, I truly believe the best part of you trickled down your mother's leg - and I refuse to apologize for saying it.  Just because I'm on the Left doesn't mean I have to be fair and balanced.

Who cares if people say I'm just as bad as she is.  I don't care.  Judge me all you want.  I'm sick and tired of sitting back and taking this bull from her and others like her.  Why should I have to put up with it?  Why should YOU have to put up with it?

Ignoring her doesn't help.  This worthless piece of skin is still on television.  It's time to take action against this nonsense.  People like Coulter don't add to the political discourse in this nation.  Why is she considered entertainment?  Is this where entertainment has brought us?  I say throw her off television.  Let her try to hawk her books another way.

The other day the AP was spelling his name 'Usama', as if to further assist the disappearance of a fictional character to begin with.

Note how Colmes uses the expression, "..only you can talk like that. Only conservatives", it's a direct example of language rights enforcement; and unfortunately something mediamatters (the host of this comment board) has chosen over the Freedom of Expression.

If you 'don't post often enough' you get canned, becuase it's a safer way of saying mm doesn't like you or your freedom to elect personal ambivalence, the dissent to remain affixed and conforming to banal rigamorole while segwaying to the more pressing, demanding and substantive--even if you don't use a single swear word (profanity). They know that abstracting from issues or news events to fill in the gaps surrounding stiffly planned and regulated media agendas, deriving similar themes on which to expound undermines tight control of content, which Washington corruption has become solely dependent on. This is why letters to the paper have been overrun with inane local comic artists running their own drawing and caption contests as well as the word limit being tightened on public comment whereas editorials blather carte blanche. The public is disliked because it may have inappropriate views for corporate anal retentiveness, even 501c3 n.f.p's.

Even though mm boasts itself a 501c3 not for profit, it is asking the public for donations, a good question would be whether that gives them the liberty to enact a list of contrived club-house rules for curtailing speech in new and bizarre ways that exclude people based on loosely defined junk jargon such as 'trolling'--whatever that was supposed to mean. Weren't trolls the ones who menaced the bridges to access, depriving others of crossing the conduits to something? The misnomer, double think web buzzword actually describes the Orwellian thought police's behavior of excluding message board posters for esoteric qualifications of not remaining rigidly infatuated with mm's quite obvious preference for soft, non-issue personality wars, as is anything involving Ann Coulter, hard nosed and gay labeling as a vicious little school girl though she may be. Her antics rank her among the more iconoclastic examples of 'not ready for prime time'..then to add..in any season. This article focuses on speech and language rights, who's important enough to use words in public...and this post is a timely chagrined reflection on policy crackdowns at mediamatters involving the very same issue that surpasses any question of decency and the use of profanity in public. You can be clean and salient but just not up to the standards of thought/speech control. Only Ann Coulter can talk like that. A forgone conclusion from the start, that's why I never inserted mm's link into my webpage, they demonstrate a pseudo liberal receptivity that breaks down to the same bad habits eventually, banning protected speech as any republicans in media have been conditioned and well rehearsed to quash. Don't you make the mistake of 'not posting enough', if you know...wink, wink...what I mean. The wimps who are unfit for leadership or government or political capacities don't like it when people just say the darndest things which don't pay homage to or mind their priorities. Too weak to sustain criticism or divergent interpretations on all the media, all its stories simultaneously, to formulate the hidden links in and between the sphere of current events American and world experience, and too coquettish with the obvious cult of corruption to qualify its 501c3 and solicit donations....where do I complain about them to the proper authorities? [..hey you've got some loons at mediamatters trying to play thought-police and they're ripping off the 501c3 clause while asking for donations and advertising jobs..]

I'd really love to engage you in a meaningful dialog, but I'm not sure how, since I have absolutely no idea what you're trying to talk about.

Where to begin?  First, "Usama" is a perfectly acceptable transliteration from Arabic.  Would you rather refer to Osama bin Laden as أسامة بن محمد بن عوض بن لادن?  And how is any of this relevant?

As for "language rights enforcement": I can't make heads or tails of how you're using this phrase in this context.  Colmes' comment had nothing to do with rights.  He was responding to the proposition that Obama's speech in a church was extraordinarily politically utilitarian.  He was implying that Coulter was prejudiced against any liberal candidate's invocation of religion: a reasonable topic for discussion, since this is precisely the subject of Coulter's book, Godless.  What does this have to do with the enforcement of anyone's rights?

You then address MMFA's own policies concerning speech regulation on its discussion boards.  You claim that MMFA has privileged "language rights enforcement" over the "Freedom of Speech"... but you fail to adequately explain why you hold this position.  If you are angry that public speech is regulated by MMFA, then you misunderstand  fundamentally what constitutes public speech.  An unregulated public is a contradiction in terms: at the very least, publics regulate themselves; and there is nothing anti-public about instituting and enforcing terms of use for a discussion forum.  (Please feel free to check out some of these works by Jurgen Habermas, Walter Lippman, John Dewey, and Michael Warner for several thorough discussions of publics.)  In the legal tradition of the United States, it is in fact private speech that is most stridently protected from state regulation.  Speaking in public requires that one agree to the terms of public speech, whatever that public may be.

Please do take the time to clarify yourself -- what you have to say sounds really interesting.

If she was outraged, she has every right to debate Ann without John's approval, permission, or guidance.  John was not hiding behind his wife's skirts.  The fact YOU put it in this way says a lot about YOU in my eyes - and nothing favorable.
