Olbermann named Limbaugh "Worst Person" for claiming Dems are interested in Darfur for electoral reasons

August 27, 2007 2:31 pm ET

Keith Olbermann named Rush Limbaugh the "winner" of his nightly "Worst Person in the World" segment for claiming that Democratic opponents of the Iraq war have focused on the genocide in Darfur in order to secure a percentage of the black "voting bloc." Olbermann also named Bill O'Reilly the "runner-up" for telling "his cable audience, quote, 'We know that journalists, most journalists, give money to Democrats.' " Olbermann asserted: "Not really, no. The report said that most journalists who do give money to political groups give that money to Democrats. But the report only found 127 American journalists who had given money to Democrats out of about 100,000."

During the August 26 special Sunday edition of Countdown on NBC, host Keith Olbermann named syndicated radio host Rush Limbaugh the "winner" of his nightly "Worst Person in the World" segment for claiming that Democratic opponents of the Iraq war have focused on the genocide in Darfur in order to secure a percentage of the black "voting bloc," as Media Matters for America documented. Olbermann stated: "[O]ur winner, in an upset, comedian Rush Limbaugh, explaining that Americans who want to see their sons and daughters, and friends and neighbors, brought home from Iraq alive are actually racists." Olbermann quoted Limbaugh's comments from the August 21 broadcast of the nationally syndicated Rush Limbaugh Show on the purported "reasons" why Democrats "want to get us out of Iraq but can't wait to get us into Darfur." Limbaugh said on that program, "What color is the skin of the people in Darfur? It's black. And who do the Democrats really need to keep voting for them? If they lose a significant percentage of this voting bloc, they're in trouble. ... So you go into Darfur and you go into South Africa, you get rid of the white government there. You put sanctions on them. You stand behind Nelson Mandela."

Limbaugh frequently appears on Olbermann's "Worst Person" list, as Media Matters has noted (here, here, here, here, here, and here). On August 2, Olbermann awarded Limbaugh the "bronze" for claiming that "Democrats have, quote, 'aligned themselves with the enemy. The enemy kills more soldiers, their spokesmen here in America are the Democrats. When we kill more of the enemy, the Democrats are silent and they say nothing. But when you have reports of, you know, another IED or a picture of a car on fire, then the Democrats assume the role of media PR spokespeople for Al Qaeda.' "

On the August 27 show, Olbermann also named Fox News host Bill O'Reilly the "runner-up" for, as Media Matters also noted, asserting that "most journalists give money to Democrats," apparently referring to an MSNBC report on journalists' political donations. After reading O'Reilly's claim, Olbermann responded: "Not really, no. The report said that most journalists who do give money to political groups give that money to Democrats. But the report only found 127 American journalists who had given money to Democrats out of about 100,000. That would be approximately one one-tenth of one percent, Billy, as opposed to, say, most."

On July 18, Olbermann named O'Reilly the "winner" of the "Worst Person" segment for defending his earlier comparison of the blog Daily Kos to the Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan. As Media Matters has documented (here, here, here, and here), Olbermann also frequently names O'Reilly in his "Worst Person" segment.

From the August 26 special edition of Countdown with Keith Olbermann on NBC:

OLBERMANN: Our runner-up, good ol' Bill-O. Bill O'Reilly of Fixed News, citing a recent investigative report from, of all places, MSNBC.com. He told his cable audience, quote, "We know that journalists, most journalists, give money to Democrats." Not really, no. The report said that most journalists who do give money to political groups give that money to Democrats. But the report only found 127 American journalists who had given money to Democrats out of about 100,000. That would be approximately one one-tenth of one percent, Billy, as opposed to, say, most.

But our winner, in an upset, comedian Rush Limbaugh explaining that Americans who want to see their sons and daughters, and friends and neighbors, brought home from Iraq alive are actually racists. "They want to get us out of Iraq but they can't wait to get us into Darfur," comedian explained. "What color is the skin of the people in Darfur," he asked rhetorically. "It's black. And who do the Democrats really need to continue voting for them, if they lose a significant percentage of this voting bloc they're in trouble." Wait, I haven't gotten to the best part yet. "So you go into Darfur," comedian added, "and you go into South Africa, you get rid of the white government there. You put sanctions on them. You stand behind Nelson Mandela."

Rush, I hate to break this to you but, most of American divestment in South Africa came while Ronald Reagan -- you might remember him -- while he was the president. And while the first George Bush was the president, they let Mandela out of jail and made the African National Congress legal again. And also, you're nuts.

Comedian Rush Limbaugh, today's Worst Person in the World.

      He's baaaaack!

Someone mentioned on another thread that Keith had been on vacation. Just one question since I don't watch Keith, doesn't whoever fills in for him do the WPITW awards? If they do, why didn't MMFA give them a thread?

Me thinks Brock & Olbermann have a little deal going on here ;-)

I already posted on the original Darfur/Limbaugh thread. I have nothing new to add to that opinion.

Nothing new here other than MMFA giving their errand boy a shout out for awarding Limbaugh.

      Yawn.

Yet, this endless cheerleading and repetition of the same issue is a transparent charade by mmfa into their political pandering soul...and better said by another poster...mmfa is just feeding red meat to the zealots that come here...with the main intent of venting their anger.

MMfH is simply cheering on someone else who highlights conservative misinformation, purely for entertainment purposes.  None of the stories on KO evoke rage from the left, but they do draw out a lot of smiles from those happy to know that SOMEone out there in the "MSM" is battling the propaganda.

Absolutely agree with that Wesley. And every blue moon there has been a Keith thread like that.

I just don't get the point of doing re-runs of threads already featured & discussed just because Keith gave it an award. Seems pointless to me.

It must be really upsetting to the political right that the net has the power to give everyone a voice.

The right wing has long enjoyed an ownership juggernaut of talk radio where equally bloodthirsty righties call in and vent their anger to a host who agrees with everything they say in front of an audience of millions.

Just guessing here, but it could just be a "tip of the hat" to a kindred spirit. Since Kieth is one of the few openly "liberal" cable TV talking heads, maybe MMFA wants to give him a plug whenever possible. If you think of all the liberal talkers, radio or TV, I'm thinking that Kieth is the most well known, though I haven't seen the stats, and could be all wet.

I would imagine that conservative blogs mention Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity pretty often, as well.

Jeter, I'll take a stab at speculating as to MMFA' motives.(-:  If their mission is to debunk the conservative agenda/misinformation thingy and to provide the tools to others to do like wise (this is my quick poaraphrase of the about us. Feel free to read verbatim to get better understanding about their mission) then it would follow that they would promote items that do the same and promote items that show their efforts to provide the tools to debunk is effective.  KO seems to be a perfect example of someone who is debunking misinformation and conservative agenda thingy and using the tools MMFA provides.  Perhaps it is positive reinforcement for others to follow suit. Nerzog & LostLogic,

This might be hard to believe but MMFA's arch-enemy Chris Matthews occasionally covers a story that was featured here & slaps the media for the way they MIS-informed the public& promoted a Conservative/GOP agenda.

Yet MMFA never gives Chris a pat on the head the way they do Keith. And I'm sure if one did some research there would be other examples out there on other programs. If MMFA wants to pat the media on the head when they've done *good*, maybe they should introduce a sidebar column here called *Tip of the Hat* [borrowed that from Nerzog]and feature the examples there.

I still say Brock & Olberman have a *deal*

            Oh well.

You could be right. I agree that Matthews sometimes takes jabs at both sides. He's frustrating to watch, because sometimes he acts like a real journalist, and sometimes he acts like an errand boy.

My favorite anecdote along these lines is when Chris blasted Michelle Malkin about the Swift Boat ads. I was really proud of him...he virtually tore her a new one. Then, a few days later, he was interviewing Zell Miller at the Republican Convention and Zell slapped him down for the way he had treated Malkin. That's when Zell challenged him to a duel, right after his famous "spitball" speech. Sadly, Chris just rolled over and played dead.

It may be important that the type of beer come into play here. Domestic or Imported. And one should never say things out of line concerning women.

Personally, I remember the last word I said to my ex-wife...She asked what was on TV last last night and I answered...DUST. So be careful what you say.

My wife asked me if I wanted her to make me a drink.  I said "Sure, that would be great."

After about 15 minutes it appeared that she forgot about it, so I asked her how she was coming along with that drink she was making.

She snapped; "I've only got 2 hands.  It sure would be nice if someone would wait on me!"  I answered; "I've been waiting on you and that drink for 15 minutes!"

I never did get that drink.

I, too, meet the occasional sexist, and frankly, I find them archaic and - due to the absurdity of their attitude - funny.

Nothing signals the collapse of an antiquated custom as much as when it's personification becomes humor.  By not recognizing how ridiculous a misogynistic state-of-mind is nowadays, I think you're actually helping delay its extinction.  Righteous indignation is only truly effective for the oppressed.  Once that oppression is marginalized, righteous indignation becomes fodder for it's targets.

              FAIR:

As a young broadcaster in the 1970s, Limbaugh once told a black caller: "Take that bone out of your nose and call me back." A decade ago, after becoming nationally syndicated, he mused on the air: "Have you ever noticed how all composite pictures of wanted criminals resemble Jesse Jackson?"

Ah, but if you actually read the Snopes piece, you will see that RL regrets having said it.

So, for consistency, if you accept Senator Byrd's regrets that he was a grand whatzit in the KKK, you also should put RL's (literally) regrettable comment from the 70's in perspective also.

RL says something racist...Lefties accuse RL of being "racist" and slander RL's audience as being a bunch of morons... yawn.

Furthermore, 'morons' was your terminology, not mine.  If you want to equate being a mindless follower of Rush Limbaugh (i.e. someone who lets Rush make up their mind for them) with being a moron, you go right ahead.

Surely no one is surprised at Rush's comments.  His racism has been showing for years.  When I used to belong to the Republican Party, I was always totally embarassed by his racist remarks and then to add to my discomfort, to hear all the Republicans make nice about his comments.

Limbaugh is either totally devoid of conscience in order to make those disgusting anti-women and racial comments or he is so stupid that he thinks those sorts of comments add to the enlightened conversation.  If that is the case, one must wonder about his value system.  Actually I did not make up the rules about how we must treat our brothers.  God did.  All this palaver about the "Christian right" and then they put up and deify such a hateful person.  Does not fit with their constant drum beating about the moral majority.

If one was to search their soul and find RL to be a person worth defending, I seriously wonder about their moral compass. That goes double for Savage. These are mean spirited liars and dissemblers.

I got the "Media Matters" email, with the "Rush Limbaugh's Latest Race-Based Rant..."

So I came to see just what the ruckus was about.

The only thing, I can see, that make his statements RACE related is your assertion that it's a race related statement.

We need more people like you to get those moron Liberals that can't think or read to rally against ....(what? oh yes) anything that seems to be middle of the road or conservative.

      You go boy/girl? A.I.

Ermmm...how about the whole claiming the Dems only want to intervene in the whole Darfur genocide situation because they're afraid of losing the 'black vote' comment that sparked off this thread?

        Just a suggestion...

If you are a reverend, it's a sad state of the clergy to begin a post here with the term "moron liberals."   Sets a tone of disrespect immediately.

Limbaugh has a history of bringing up race at odd moments, when others aren't,..he charges a political calculation that is very cynical and frankly; in my opinion, a projection, because that is how he thinks.

I actually listen to Rush once or twice a week just so I can shake my head at what a damn fool he is.  There is no way on Gods green earth that Rush is a good person.  He is hateful and thinks afro-americans are inferior.  Thats a fact.  Twist it anyway you want but its true.  How do "christians" defend this man.  Forget being from the left or right.  Any descent, warm hearted person should see this man is down right hateful.

I personaly think rush hit the nail on the head. The dems dont care about Darfur. Just like they dont care for the enviroment. Well I cant actually say they all dont. but look at Edwards remarks about americans giving up there SUV's, and then he was asked about his what is it 28,000 sqft house he said he earned the right after years of hard work. Edwards is right of course he does deserve to have that house if he wants it, but darn it I want my SUV too. Back to Darfur though, Its like Iraq. People dont like the war in Iraq but what makes the people of Darfur more deservent of our help than the people of Iraq. Didn't Saddam kill millions of People there too. But you'll never get a Dem to say we needed to free those people. So we'll abandon them and go to Darfur, yeah right.
