Fox News on-screen graphic: "RUDY GIULIANI + 9/11 = THE WHITE HOUSE??"

October 18, 2007 10:54 am ET

On the October 17 edition of Fox News' Studio B with Shepard Smith, during a segment on Fox News host Sean Hannity's interview with Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani and his wife, Judith, an on-screen graphic read: "RUDY GIULIANI + 9/11 = THE WHITE HOUSE??" Smith prefaced his discussion with Republican strategist Margaret Hoover and Democratic strategist Malia Lazu by asserting, "Judy Giuliani has been very quiet for the past few months, maybe by campaign design, but last night she and her husband sat down with Sean Hannity -- in obviously very friendly territory -- and one of the first topics: 9-11, the day Rudy Giuliani became a worldwide, household name." After airing a video clip of the interview, Smith said: "Judy Giuliani, speaking out, and on the record with her husband, a place we've not seen her for a long time -- in the public eye. Why now? Why that venue? And why this topic?"

While the segment did not include any additional discussion of Giuliani's response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the same on-screen graphic was shown repeatedly throughout the rest of the segment:

As Media Matters for America has repeatedly documented (here, here, here, here, and here), the media have frequently lauded Giuliani as a 9-11 hero while omitting criticisms of his performance as mayor before, during, and after September 11.

Further, at no point during the segment did Smith mention Hoover's reported ties to Giuliani's campaign. According to an April 9 New York magazine article, Hoover joined Giuliani's campaign in September 2006 "to help direct fund-raising operations." The article went on to report: "Hoover, 29, says she's departing to pursue the ever-popular 'other opportunities,' adding that she's 'still supporting Rudy for president.' "

From the October 17 edition of Fox News' Studio B with Shepard Smith:

SMITH: Presidential candidates drag their husbands and wives out on the campaign trail all the time. I don't know about "drag" -- a lot of spouses really like to do it and some spouses are more vocal than others. Judy Giuliani has been very quiet for the past few months, maybe by campaign design, but last night she and her husband sat down with Sean Hannity -- in obviously very friendly territory -- and one of the first topics: 9-11, the day Rudy Giuliani became a worldwide, household name.

[begin video clip]

JUDITH GIULIANI: Well, September 11th was the most horrific day of my entire life. One of the things that many people don't realize, Sean, is that Rudy was trapped in the basement of 75 Barclay Street for some time that morning. So I could have lost Rudy on that day.

[...]

JUDITH GIULIANI: We lost loved ones, we lost friends, and Rudy, of course, being Rudy, put me to work, and I was able --

[end video clip]

SMITH: Judy Giuliani, speaking out, and on the record, and with her husband, a place we've not seen her for a long time -- in the public eye. Why now? Why that venue? And why this topic? Margaret Hoover is with us, she's a Republican strategist. Malia Lazu is a Democratic strategist and joins us live now from California. I guess let's start with Republicans. And, Margaret, why now? Why not before? And why Sean Hannity?

Well I think it is now clear. FOX is endorsing Rudy Giuliani for President. I think we will begin to see the propaganda machine in full force now.

I predict that it will be extremely ugly this time around. Assuming that it's Giuliani vs. Clinton, we'll get to relive the 90s all over again, plus endless references to Giuliani's "heroism" on 9/11. By the time their professional liars are done, they'll dig up eye witnesses who saw Rudy catching babies falling out of the World Trade Center. You think they've puffed up Reagan? Wait til you see what they do with SuperRudy!

NO. The point here is that banner poses the question and presents the connection without any actual content about it in the programming.  It runs continuously while they banter off that particular topic. I wonder do these talking heads sometime just ad lib it?  Are theses shows taped and the chryon added later, or did the bobbleheads wander?

Rudy is a sideshow. He is not getting that nomination. For those Dune fans out there, He is the hand that hides the knife. They don't want to show what they're going to beat Hillary with so they dance around with this loud clown.

But they know they can't keep their coalition of the weird together for the general election with cross-dressing Rudy as the nominee. He's just got too much...personality. Too messy. What he will provide is the backdrop for the emergence of their new star empty suit. They need a haircut to recite the dangers we face and pretend to be Ronald Reagan. Someone the religious folks could get behind. Count on it being Romney. They'll get over the mormon thing better than the cross-dressing videos and affairs and divorces.

I don't think it is an endorsement.  The two question marks, to me, symbolize the complete absurdity in the equation.

Maybe the press finally understands that occupying a mayoral position during a pivotal time in our nation's history does not a president make.

Actually, I applied a little elementary algebra, and discovered something startling:

        9/11 = White House - Rudy Giuliani

Indicating that had Rudy been president, 9/11 would not have happened!

Even as startling as THAT is, after further evaluation of the original equation, I made an even more astonishing discovery:

        Rudy Giuliani = White House - 9/11

indicating that without 9/11, Rudy would have had his whole house painted.  Unfortunately, he was interrupted by the events that day, and didn't finish his painting, leading us to the equation:

        9/11 = (White + Brown) House + Rudy Giuliani

Yes.  Rudy lives in a partially white and partially brown house.  And his HOA is having a fit.

I love the way you have connected the dots here.

Without paint the house will rot.  The number between 9/11 is ten.  Thus:

rot + ten + Rudy = rotten Rudy

By that same token, if you can somehow link how a horrendous catastrophe -during the time the safety of his city was his responsibility- translates in Fox' addled and gov't propagandist minds to -literally- a "+" -a positive plus- you'll have a story that will surely run on Fox News and WorldNetDaily.

(Check that: stories like that already have run on those two outlets.)

Your "legitimate question" is particularly interesting in light of the mixed reaction, controversy and anger over Giuliani's response or lack thereof to that tragedy.

And-particularly in light of how the only thing mentioned about 9/11 during this Smith segment was that "Rudy was trapped in the basement."

Sorry, but Rudy + stuck in the basement does not = Presidential Timber.

SMITH: .... Judy Giuliani has been very quiet for the past few months, maybe by campaign design, but last night she and her husband sat down with Sean Hannity...

Can Smith really be this stupid?

If it's not an appearance approved by Giuliani's handlers and just another way to conflate Giuliani with 9/11 much in the same way Saddam was tied to 9/11 I'd like to know what he thinks it is.

Fox News doesn't even feel the need to be subtle about sellling the idea to the American public.

Based on the minimal discussion of Giuliani's response on 9/11 in Smith's story, I have this Legitimate Question:

Rudy + "Trapped in the basement on 9/11" = Rudy trapped in the presidential candidate cellar??

      Memories of Gen. Patton?

I'm waiting for FOX to create graphics of Giuliani on 9/11 firing ivory-gripped pistols at the hijacked airplanes before they crashed into the Twin Towers. And didn't Giuliani rush into the rubble to finish off Mohamed Atta with a bullet to the head?  ;>)

No, Giuliani stood in front of the rubble scratching his head wondering, "Dude, where'd my Crisis Command Center go?"

One question mark is "I'm just sayin'", but two show complete incredulity.

The graphic is declaring its disgust for Giuliani's one-note candidacy, and its dismay that voters might be dumb enough to buy it.

It translates roughly:  "What the hell?  You really think you can be president by just saying 9/11 over and over?"

Giuliani needs to call Fox News at once and complain about its liberal bias.

If you want to read what Fox News executive Roger Ailes thinks of the American public all you have to do is read the Selling of the President

          [link to www.amazon.com]

This is Ailes at his best and in the intervening 40 years he's made an art form out of what he was doing back then.

There was a 'Rudy" on the scene on 9/11 but his last name wasn't Giuliani it was Washington.

Rudy Washington. [Source: Congress of Racial Equality]After being caught in the dust plume when the WTC’s South Tower collapses at 9:59, Rudy Washington, who is one of Rudy Giuliani’s deputy mayors, heads to City Hall, where he coordinates the city’s emergency response to the attacks. He is in contact with New York Governor George Pataki, high-ranking New York Police Department officers, and Navy Admiral Robert Natter, the commander of the US Atlantic Fleet (see (Shortly After 9:59 a.m.) September 11, 2001). He orders the closing of bridges. (Though, according to some accounts, the New York Port Authority ordered all bridges to be closed earlier on, at 9:21 (see 9:21 a.m. September 11, 2001).) As New York Daily News columnist Stanley Crouch later describes, Washington also finds “heavy machinery to get downtown for the cleanup and got the Navy to guard against a seaborne attack. He evacuated City Hall, which shook like crazy when the second tower fell. He gathered people who could give medical help, gave the order to find lights that could be used at Ground Zero and worked out new phone communications, since power was being lost. Accompanied by city engineers, he went into the streets around the fallen towers, testing the ground to make sure it would hold when the heavy equipment came in.” Washington’s efforts at developing an emergency strategy are reportedly aided by what he learned at an anti-terrorist training session chaired by counterterrorism “tsar” Richard Clarke and held at the WTC, in preparation for the millennium celebration (see (Late 1999)). Stanley Crouch later credits Rudy Washington with having “ran New York for the first few hours after the attack during a period when Giuliani was thought to have been killed inside the first building that went down.” [[link to www.nydailynews.com] color="#0000ff">New York Daily News, 5/20/2004] During the initial hours following the attacks, between around 9:50 a.m. and midday, Mayor Giuliani is moving around between a series of temporary command posts.

Thank you Pearl...I appreciate the education about this person.  So Mr. 9/ll was roaming while this guy was directing, eh?

I do give Guilliani credit for having a calming "face" in front of the cameras that day.  But the back story is really even more important.

Mary when you look at all the things this guy did and yet I've never heard Rudy mention his name one time. He acts like he did everything when actually he did nothing in the first few hours. Is this what we can expect if another 9/11 happens? Will we have a repeat of 'My Pet Goat?'

"Judy Giuliani has been very quiet for the past few months, maybe by campaign design, but last night she and her husband sat down with Sean Hannity -- in obviously very friendly territory -- "

Obviously.  No embarassing questions about how they met or if she knew he was still married to his second wife at the time.  Sean is much too high class to ask such personal questions...of a Republican.
