Olbermann named Coulter "Worst Person" for remarks on Medved program about Jews

During the October 17 edition of MSNBC's Countdown, host Keith Olbermann named right-wing pundit Ann Coulter the "winner" in his nightly "Worst Person in the World" segment following her October 15 appearance on The Michael Medved Show, which Media Matters for America noted. Olbermann characterized her remarks as "clarifying" the comments about "perfecting the Jews" that she made on the October 8 edition of CNBC's The Big Idea. Olbermann stated: "Now, it's Michael Medved making the mistake of having put her on the air, where she says, quote, 'Jews don't accept the New Testament, so, you know, as long as we're playing this new sport of "he who is offended first wins," if anyone's going to be offended by anyone else's religion, the Jews believe that my savior, a Jew, was a raving lunatic, and you don't see me sniffling and crying.' " Olbermann continued: " 'The Jews believe that my savior was a raving lunatic,' she says. And bonus points for saying, 'and you don't see me sniffling and crying.' All we see you doing is sniffling and crying."

Additionally, during the October 16 edition of Countdown, Olbermann awarded Fox News host Bill O'Reilly the "bronze" in his "Worst Person" segment for claiming not to care about Coulter's comments about "perfect[ing]" Jews, as Media Matters also noted. Olbermann said: "After Ann Coulter's anti-Semitic remarks, a Fox Noise executive told the LA Times his network would 'not rule out having her on as a guest again,' but if she did appear, 'she would be pressed about her statements.' " Olbermann continued: "Fixed News first appearance, Bill-O, about the perfecting the Jews remarks: 'I don't even care, to tell you the truth.' Coultergeist: 'Either do I. You brought it up, and I'm not explaining myself.' Bill-O: 'No, I had to bring it up because of other things.' "

Also during the October 16 program, Olbermann named syndicated radio host Rush Limbaugh the "runner-up" for claiming that "he once threatened a reporter," as Media Matters documented.

From the October 17 edition MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann:

OLBERMANN: But our winner, Coultergeist, actually clarifying her anti-Semitic remarks about perfecting the Jews, as in making it even more clear that she is an anti-Semite. Now, it's Michael Medved making the mistake of having put her on the air, where she says, quote, "Jews don't accept the New Testament, so, you know, as long as we're playing this new sport of 'he who is offended first wins,' if anyone's going to be offended by anyone else's religion, the Jews believe that my savior, a Jew, was a raving lunatic, and you don't see me sniffling and crying."

"The Jews believe that my savior was a raving lunatic," she says. And bonus points for saying, "and you don't see me sniffling and crying." All we see you doing is sniffling and crying. Coultergeist -- today's Worst Person in the World.

From the October 16 edition Countdown with Keith Olbermann:

OLBERMANN: The bronze to Bill-O: After Ann Coulter's anti-Semitic remarks, a Fox Noise executive told the LA Times his network would "not rule out having her on as a guest again," but if she did appear, "she would be pressed about her statements." Fixed appearance -- Fixed News first appearance, Bill-O, about the perfecting the Jews remarks: "I don't even care, to tell you the truth." Coultergeist: "Either do I. You brought it up, and I'm not explaining myself."

Bill-O: "No, I had to bring it up because of other things."

Ooh, somebody made Bill-O eat broccoli -- and nice job of pressing her too, Bill.

Our runner-up: comedian Rush Limbaugh, who has now merrily explained to the sheep the disturbing story of how he once threatened a reporter who was writing what was apparently going to be a negative profile of him for a magazine; "We found out who was writing it and made a couple of phone calls to the person writing it. And we said, 'You know what? We're going to find out where your kids go to school. We're going to find out who you knocked up in high school. We're going to find out what drugs you used. We're going to find out where you go to drink and do. We're going to find out how you paid for your house. We're going to do -- we're going to do exact -- we're going to say that, you know what? You are no different than Al Goldstein. You both masturbate."

Sheez, another Bill-O reference -- and wait, "We're going to find out what drugs he used"? Looking for mutual areas of interest, Rush?

If Coulter, O'Reilly & Co. didn't have some distortion, lie, or insult weekly, then your tired eyes wouldn't have to endure the severe trauma of seeing them made "Worse Persons".

        Write to them.

The lies and distortions of the right-wingers won't fit in a single thread. That's why there are 10,000 threads like that on this site.

Don't trouble yourself. Keep avoiding the topic like the mindless right-wing robot, and look over there and change the subject. Discuss how bad Olbermann's ratings allegedly are. It's all you've got.

Even better yet and more accepted, lets talk about claims of WMD's in Iraq, about spying on US citizens and about how our attackers in Iraq are from AQI and about the political hiring and firing of U.S. prosecutors.  There is an endless supply of such topics thanks to this current corrupt, lying administation.

Global warming is an actual debate.  All the above refer to well proven lies, distortions and insults.

Seriously Dave - if you think coming to this website and whining about news coverage is going to change anything you are sadly mistaken.  MMFA is a mere fly on the butt of a donkey. (I am not insulting you fellow posters here).

Ratings are not partisan - they tell the story of whos listening. If you don't like whats being broadcast do like most others are doing - change the channel.

I'd disagree because these shows have targeted audiences. By definition, if you are targeting say the right wing, the show's ratings would be a representation of the success of that partisan targeting. That's why (as you pointed out) they have small audiences. Limbaugh may look good in the ratings, but realistically he only draws a few million listeners, less than 2% of the entire population of the US.

But I do agree, if you don't like it, change the channel. I do.

It also tells you who likes to get their news with some 'spin' on it.  Die-hard right-wingers watch Fox News religiously because it validates many of the opinions that wouldn't be touched on by large news (often due to political correctness)

Left-wingers often prefer the facts without any slant, and will therefore opt to watch local news over somebody like Olbermann.

Just because Fox News has higher ratings doesn't mean their message is any better or more accurate.  It just means they can sell news, which often is tied to sensationalism and fear-mongering ("What you're eating for dinner could kill you, film at 11!")

Micsha's post was actually probably pretty accurate, and very concise.

The only thing I'd add is the "groupthink" mentality that is much more attractive to conservatives. ( as demonstrated here by the constant references to ratings as a rebuttal to criticisms of quality and credibility).

The Kieth Oberman gimmick ("worserest person in the woild") is designed to get ratings and notoriety for his low rated cable program.  However, just like how the smear campaign against Limbaugh has only made Rush more popular, the Obberman "award" has really become a badge of honor for conservatives.Honestly, it's hard for me to respect any conservative who has not received the award.  I mean, if I hear of a well know and respected conservative in the media and find out that he has not been smeared by Keeth, I have to wonder what is wrong with that conservative. Finally, I have to give Rush Limbaugh credit for using the smear-letter signed by the crazies in Washington DC as a means of raising money for a great charity.  The smear-letter is going well over $100,000 and Rush, being the great man he truly is, is going to match the final bid dollar for dollar. No doubt, this charity auction on EBay will probably gain Rush another smear attack from Keyth because of RL's support for the troops, but so be it!

It's a great charity -   you got to hand it to RL to turn this whole thing around so that it promotes something good. MARINE CORP-LAW ENFORCEMENT FOUNDATION The recent war in Iraq has certainly illuminated America’s commitment to freedom. We are reminded that freedom is not free. The price is great. No one knows that better than the left-behind sons and daughters of America’s fallen heroes.Through the continuous support of our donors, we have distributed aid with a value of more than $29,000,000.00 to eligible children. This assistance was primarily rendered to children of Marines or Federal law enforcement personnel who were killed on duty or died under extraordinary circumstances while serving our country at home or abroad. These funds enable us to provide these children with scholarships for their higher education. When a child of a United States Marine is afflicted with a physical or mental disability and requires special medical equipment or tutoring, our Foundation may grant financial assistance to that family if their personal insurance does not cover the complete cost of treatment for this child. In addition to the regular program, our Foundation decided to support all American Forces and also Coalition Forces in the invasion of Iraq and taking of Baghdad from 3 March 2003 to 16 July 2003. In the past, the Foundation also included in our program the children who lost a parent from all agencies killed in the murderous attack on the Pentagon. We also decided to go back and give our bonds to children who lost a parent on the USS Cole; the children of the Air Force personnel killed at Khobar Towers; and, with great honor, the twelve children who lost their parent on the space shuttle Columbia disaster. This assistance has had a positive, life-changing effect on many, many children. We are thankful for the commitment and support of our many members and volunteers. Because of their dedication, no administrative costs of any type are charged to our Foundation. One hundred percent of the donations received is used to fund programs for the children we serve. The Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation is certified as one of America's Best Charities by Independent Charities of America.

Butt, the reason righties defend Rush in this case is that Waxman, Reid and the Democrats are using their offices in the Government to persecute Rush because of that Rush's political views. Even though most here disagree with Rush, I would think all the liberals would stand up in opposition to this unwarranted and unconstitutional abuse of governmental power by the Democrats in Congress - simply on principle.

In case you missed it in your quest for equivalence, the condemnation by the Republican Senators was in reference to an ad calling a four star general, a traitor. That ad rightfully deserved condemnation.

The Democrats attack on Rush is an attack on a U.S. citizen by purposely misrepresenting what he said and hoping that people will think there is some truth. (Of which there is none.)  These attacks on Rush by Democrats ranks right up there with  McCarthyism.

He should sell all his prescription drugs on the street and donate the money to the soldiers.  That would probably generate more than $100k, what with all the different doctors he's visited.

Limbaugh got himself into a bit of trouble with his "phony soldiers" comment. It obviously hurt him because he went into non-stop damage control. His P.R. people most likely told him he needed some gimmick to show how devoted he was to the troops. So they find an appropriate charity for Limbaugh and make a big deal pout of what a humanitarian Limbaugh is. Gimme a break...Limbaugh doesn't have a kind bone in his body. This is all a stunt to rehabilitate his image.

What's the deal with the ratings queens?

            Good question, HBL.

Did you notice RINO's non-response?  "It simply doesn't matter what what he says on his show if nobody watches him anyway."  In other words, RINO bases his reason for ignoring Olbermann's comments (it doesn't matter what he says) on something that's both flagrantly untrue (nobody watches him) and irrelevant.  But hey, this is par for the course for RINO ("I think Sean Hannity is pretty thoughtful and pretty mainstream") Hunter.

If the ratings queens want to ignore Olbermann, that's fine.  If they want to quibble about what he actually says, that's also fine, provided they get some facts to back up their assertions.  But if they want to dismiss Olbermann out of hand because they're convinced that popularity = truth (a position no Christian should hold, of course!), then they've just fallen off the logic truck and are totally out of their depth when it comes to debating that particular thread.

Especially if we think about the actual number of people watching any show , as compared to the total population, the difference in numbers is pretty insignificant, and less so considering the less desirable demographic that goes for the conservative source.

I just find it a fascinating mind set. The "comfort in numbers" thing is easy to understand, I think that's wired into us, and everybody reacts to it in some way, at least subconsciously.

It seems a strange way to assert ones opinions, though.Especially in the face of that "popular" source being documented as unreliable and inferior.
