During the October 22 edition of MSNBC's Countdown, host Keith Olbermann awarded syndicated radio host and CNN Headline News host Glenn Beck the "bronze" in his nightly "Worst Person in the World" segment for, as Media Matters for America documented, saying on the October 22 edition of his radio program, "I think there is a handful of people who hate America. Unfortunately for them, a lot of them are losing their homes in a forest fire today." Forest fires ravaged parts of Southern California, leaving one person dead and four firefighters wounded, according to The New York Times. Subsequent to Beck's comments, the Times reported that "[a] total of 250,000 people were evacuated, including inmates from one jail and patients from one hospital in the fires' path."

As Olbermann noted, Beck's comment immediately followed his statement that "we're all one America" and "just because I disagree with you doesn't mean you hate America, and I love America. We all love America. We just disagree on how we should function." Beck had been distinguishing his views from those of California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R), who, according to the Financial Times, "has urged Republican presidential candidates to capture the political centre ground ahead of next year's election by focusing on healthcare reform and education."

As Media Matters has documented (here, here, here, here, here, and here), Olbermann has frequently named Beck during his "Worst Person" segment. Olbermann also named a CNN executive "Worst Person" for hiring Beck to host his CNN Headline News show.

From the October 22 edition of MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann:

OLBERMANN: That's ahead, but first, time for Countdown's "Worst Persons in the World."

The bronze: CNN's Glenn Beck. He says, quote, "We're all one America. Just because I disagree with you doesn't mean you hate America, and I love America. We all love America. We just disagree on how we should function, what we should do, big government, small government. It doesn't mean you hate America." Next sentence: "I think there's a handful of people who hate America. Unfortunately for them, a lot of them are losing their homes in a forest fire today."

Nice. Make fun of the California wildfires. How would you like to have to defend this guy at a sanity hearing?

Becks comments are insensitive and disgusting. Good for Olbermann for calling him out.  I still want to know when CNN will stop airing Beck and his insensitive hate?

I think Olbermann got it wrong here. Beck deserved the Gold for his asinine comment.

I would have given Beck the 'gold' as well. He really is scum for his comments. You don't 'mock' people in times of catastrophe and need like this. Never.

        Nuff said.

I just received word that the "America-hating" CFO of my employer and his wife had to pack up what  little they could from their San Diego home and temporarily relocate to the home of a welcoming CEO.

I guess that's the only way to "fire" a CEO.

OK, I'll go sit in the corner now...

I didn't see the program, but I can only imagine that Keath Boreman was pointing his thumbs at himself when he uttered "this guy", right?

That was almost as clever as one of Mark Levin's nicknames.  In fact, Levin refers to Keith Olbermann as "Keith Overbite", which makes no sense since there's nothing wrong with Keith's tooth alignment.

Yet everything's wrong with Mark Levin's brain alignment.

Speaking of Levin... I wish MM would monitor him more. He really is a major-league nutcase. Maybe he's *too* nutty for MM, I dunno.

This is just another example of a Right Wing pundit saying something she/he knows will cause an uproar just to get publicity. Ann Coulter does it on a regular basis and so does Glenn Beck. Maybe we should just IGNORE them if we can't get them fired or taken off the air. All this uproar, justifiable though it may be, just gives them more visibility.

Since when did one news commentator slaming another matter? Olbermann naming someone the "bronze" "Worst Person" makes a difference in the world?

Has Keith ever nominated Osama Bin Laden, Hugo Chavez or Fidel Castro as the 'Worst Person in the World'. NO. He should change his bit to 'The Worst Conservative in the World'.
